  • I am in Krakow, Poland continuing my travels and on the search for Holocaust history. I make my way to the former house of Amon Goeth who was the Commandant of the Krakow Plaszow Concentration Camp. He lived at this house for a number of years which is by the former Plaszow Concentration Camp. Its still a residence being used to this day and hasn't been turned into a museum. I then make my way to the former Plaszow Concentration Camp which today is a memorial site to those that suffered and died here. The walk into the camp gives you an eery feel as the events that occurred here from 1942-1944 are beyond comprehension. The camp has no entry fee and it is free to walk around but respect should be shown. There are a number of information boards that show and describe what happened at Plaszow and the history behind it. Much of the camp was destroyed when the camp was torn down, but there are some things that remain and a walk around it gives you an idea of the scale of what happened here. Popularised in the film Schindler's List, the former Krakow Ghetto is also close by and is worth a visit as there are remnants that still exist to this day. The camp was built on a Jewish Cemetery and you can still see the remains of the cemetery and one grave in particular is intact. So come and join Nomadic Jas as I venture into one of the darkest periods of history and continue my journey after visiting Auschwitz-Birneknau and show you the Jewish history of Krakow.

Jas, the building you couldn’t identify was originally the accommodation for the German SS guards. The Ukrainian guard barracks were situated across the road from the grey house where the modern apartment blocks are. I broke the rules and entered in March 24 and there’s remains of washrooms and toilets inside. It was my 2nd visit after visiting twice in January. It meant more to me than the Aushwitz visit. I noticed in March that the building works I saw in January had really progressed. There’s more paths and a lot more signage as the area is being converted into a museum. Great video thanks for highlighting such an important historical site. Tom ( Solihull UK).

To me, it seems messed up that the house was just renovated and a family moved into it like nothing had ever happened there.

Good video - Does it take long to get here from the city centre? Did you take a bus?

I walked from the city centre as it’s pretty much a straight walk and took about 45 mins. But there is a metro and it’s about 2 stops away

Are the roads built out of Jewish gravestones still there or taken out?

So Goeth's house didn't overlook the whole camp, and he never shot people from his balcony (but God knows he shot hundreds). Filmaker's licence I guess.

The original camp is behind his house and there are a few videos available that show the original balcony.
