One small detail that I still like is that, when Jesper's father comes to retrieve him, he notices that his son is looking sad, he sits down in front of him before leaving and inquires what the situation is. His father genuinely cares and is attentive and I like that.

Yeah!! It’s really nice to have confirmation that his dad’s only true concern wasn’t to punish Jesper or get him out of the way, but to push him toward finally achieving some sort of self-actualization (he probably didn’t expect his tactic to be as successful as it ended up being though lol)

@@juliebogen1797 You could say it was a bit of a punishment to go to Smeerensberg, but yeah, he probably expected it to be a humbling defeat. Instead it was a victory and growing experience for Jesper, which is also good. He just didn't expect the way Jesper would develop and how could he, but he didn't seem like he was against it either.

Honestly, I think they missed an opportunity there to have a good reconciliation between the father and the son and to kind of close the emotional arc that was established in the beginning of the movie for Jesper. It was something that they sacrificed in order to have the fake departure followed by the reveal that he stayed behind, but I can't shake the feeling that they could have figured out a way to work that in instead of just having him talk about it after the fact. You lose that emotional anchor.

Hello! Just a little technical clarification. I am the person who supervised the lighting in Klaus and we never used machine learning to do it, it is actually a team of 30 artists who made it by hand with the help of a tracking system from an in-house software. If you are curious to see how it is actually made go check the youtube channel of The SPA Studios, we released bunch of timelapse videos with me voicing over them to explain the process.
Thank you and glad lots of you love Klaus ! Merry Christmas !

My favorite part about this movie is how each detail of todays Christmas is slowly revealed. The wagon is pulled by a horse until they need something stronger and we get reindeer, the wagon breaks and we get the sleigh, a child sees them making a huge jump and suddenly the reindeer can fly, it’s just such a great explanation for everything.

And overall, i love that theres this relationship between the post and santa. Like a human element, the way parents and older family give kids gifts, and play santa, that even national post offices do this magical thing to maintain this beautiful white lie for children and foster belief. (Where the rising ape meets the falling angel). That theres a necessity for not just children to believe, but the everyday adult. We say the words and step into them. It really feels like a spiritual extension/precursor of the hogfather (then a ball of gas would take the place of the sun, we need to believe the little lies, to believe the big ones- justice, hope, etc). The postman is this go between of the mystical and those who believe, they lend weight to the lie, and in doing so, make it true. Especially in this day and age, they really are the people who deliver the gifts, and its Klaus who gets the credit. Its not a selfless act on their part. They are just trying to do their job. But they deserve proper appreciation, wages, breaks, treatment, all of it, even admidst the christmas season.

What I also love about the montage is that the parents start to do nice things because of the kids. The kids don't see the difference between the two groups and don't understand why they hate each other. And by doing good deeds they show the adults that their near sighted few may be not the right way to live life. We can all learn something from a kids view on this world. Alva had initially been planning to leave the town for years, and was generally apathetic about her job, only to change her tune when the illiterate children ask her to help them to write their names. Honestly, her arc kinda gets me. Here's someone who tried to do the same thing as Jesper, except she came in with genuinely good intentions and it all got beaten out of her by the nature of the island. Then this whiny, stuck-up prick shows up and stumbles his way into success. Except, it's not just success for him. He drives the kids her way, too. It takes a minute, but the kids start to learn. They whet their appetites for knowledge and become driven to seek out more. Jesper's accidental good deed changed her life, so, in return, she shows him the purpose and neighborly love he inspired throughout the whole community, eventually changing his for the better.

My favorite scene is when the kids go to school for the first time and Alva thinks that if she just teaches them one thing they’ll leave her alone, but then they actually get really excited and inspired at the idea of learning more. Jesus is a major figure in Islam to the degree that he’s called the Messiah and is said to be coming back on judgment day much like in Christianity. Instead, Jesus is recognized and highly respected as a prophet of God who did hugely profound and important things in his life, but that's pretty much it, more or less. Islam also forbids idolatry, so a Muslim celebrating the birth of a man who is supposed to represent The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost (and has been visually depicted with varying degrees of accuracy more times than most people) would probably be looked down upon, to say the least lol.

My animation thesis advisor actually worked with Klaus’s director, Sergio Pablos, during their time at Disney, and he introduced me to this film way back around 2016-2017 when all that was out was a concept trailer. At the time, it was mindblowing to me that 2D animation could finally achieve this stage of polish, and I knew that a full film of this would be the start of something amazing. I’m so happy to see that it’s become a holiday must-watch for so many people ❤

    • @netherworlde

I remember the concept trailer as well! It feels strange to have watched the first steps of what would later become a highly renowned film. Like being one of the first to see a lightsaber before the creation of Star Wars. I had my eye on the project because Pablos was the animator for Treasure Planet's Dr. Doppler, another film I revere. His character animation style is very recognizable in Jesper.

The music in the frog scene always gets me within seconds and I think that's mostly due to its timing: it doesn't properly start when the toy is revealed, because it's not about the toy. Like the boy it's hesitant at first, then it's filled with surprise and amusement and only when the boy actually gives in to the joy of the moment, the music goes big while the camera takes us from the kid to Klaus. The music is not about what a great present the frog is but about how great the kid's joy is and how THAT is the gift that Klaus needed.

Klaus is personally my favorite Christmas Movie, and might also be the only Christmas Movie I like. I love the story, of how someone so selfish can bring so much joy, and eventually even enjoy spreading it. How kindness spreads just like hate, and how sometimes all you need is to be kind to make the world a better place. The animation as well is just, top notch. I genuinely didn't know this was 2D until a year or so ago, the shading & lighting is immaculate. And most of all, I appreciate how grounded it feels. It has its moments of magical whimsy, but they're subtle, and could be easily seen as interpretations. The building of the myth, how this wonderful man probably became a Saint, Saint Klaus if you will. The Sami people and their colorful clothes being the origins of his iconic red suit. There's so much I love about this movie, I watch it every Christmas.

Jesper when he is watching Margu on her boat/sled. He doesn't say anything, he just smiles and his eyes widen and light up, and you can see in that moment he realizes what Klaus saw when he gave the little boy his toy frog. I am a science teacher, during my first job I tried to tell how interesting science could be to 6th grade students, so I told them cool facts about sponge bob or finding nemo, even capitan america and how some seeds can be frozen and then come again to life, one boy looked at me and said "wow teacher, could you teach us more?" and I thought "well, this is my life purpose". When I heard that like in Klaus I almost cried, to be able to put that spark in someone else, gives you a feeling of fullfilment I wish everyone could feel. Such a beautiful movie indeed.

I cannot believe I missed this upload! Klaus is not just one of my all time favorite Christmas movies, it's one of my favorites films of all time, period! It's perhaps the first film I watched as an adult, that genuinely made me feel like a kid again! The song that plays when Margu gets her toy "Invisible", makes me cry every single time ❤
And as an amateur animator, this movie continues to BLOW my mind away! I've always had a huge soft spot for 2D, and it's been heartbreaking to see companies like Disney and Dreamworks completely drop the medium over the past 10+ years.. Klaus and the people at SPA Studios _revolutionized_ 2D animation for the first time in a decade! I'm genuinely upset that this movie didn't get more recognition, and that the studio hasn't produced a hand-drawn animation since. Though their current project "Ember", which was cancelled by Netflix, was gonna be similar in style to "Klaus" 🤞

I've been watching this every Christmas since this came out. Such a beautiful movie. The artwork, the story, the humour - everything is just perfect.

We discovered this movie last Christmas season and it quickly became a favorite of ours. Glad you two loved it. Its warming, beautiful, and just a great way to think of the Christmas/Santa spirit. Had no idea it was all hand drawn.

Something odd that i see on your faces. You both have such strong laugh lines. It shows a life lived. It weirdly makes me adore you both more. You guys are my hero's because you guys are so empathetic and good natured on here. Of course we dont see all of you on here but what we do see brings me such joy.

I once heard kindness is something that has to grow but anyone can do it. This whole movie just felt like a Christmas miracle reminding me of that everytime I watch it with my family. It has been a long time since my family and I loved a holiday movie this much! Over dramatic I know but it's true. Thanks for looking it over you guys are AWESOME! Sorry your having to do 6 in a row 😅

Yay so happy! This has become one of our favorite Christmas movies-well earning its spot on our “must watch every year!” (Alongside Home Alone 1&2, Muppet Christmas Carol, Elf, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe)

I just love the one-upping of kind deeds the adults are doing, not even really realising that they're not perpetuating the cycle of rivalry anymore but are still keeping the attitude while doing it like if they keep the act then they're still rivals even if they're doing nice for each other

Another Netflix hidden gem with creative animation is Nimona! It's a wonderful story of gleeful chaos, healing from betrayal, and self-acceptance in a society that views you as a monster.

Literally just watched this movie (for my annual watch, not the first time) last night, so i love that this dropped today
And yes! This movie is basically Kuzco and Pacha as Jesper and Klaus. It's almost like they dropped those characters into this setting and made a movie about it

I saw the art style and was immediately drawn in. But it was the scene where he first arrives in the town that had me sold. There was the creepy little kids staring at him while stabbing a snowman with carrots and I was like, "oh yeah, I'm gonna like this movie."

The do-gooding montage in this awesome film is one of the best montages EVER!
And within that, the little sequence of the two neighbors swapping berry-based gifts SO SPITEFULLY is hilarious!!! How do you show someone do something nice out of spite?!? 😂😂😂

if you want recs, i think you'll enjoy nimona! it deals with themes of found family and prejudice. nimona is a chaotic lil bean and i love her so much.
but focusing more on klaus, i watched it the year it came out and was enteanced with the art. it's so pretty. klaus' arc of coming to terms with his loss got me real good. he's lived a life colored hy grief and it was so relieving to see him find joy again. it's amazing how this christmas movie really doesn't feel that cristmasy at all, except it really does.

Great movie. I was hoping to see a response to the scene where they make and deliver the sled for Margu. To me that is the scene where you really see the change and result in Jesper where he realized the joy he can help bring to people. And where he really begins to selflessly try to.

This movie was a balm to my hearing heart back in 2020 - what a rough, challenging year. That being said, there was opportunity and the potential for good that year, too. I watched Klaus then and fell in love with the animation, character development, beautiful principles, and message about kindness, human connection, and love!!! This story is INCREDIBLE and should be an all-time holiday classic!
