    I was recently talking with a friend about why there are so many mutes, and she had the idea that maybe a lot of people having living situations in IRL where them talking would be disruptive to their household, or apartment neighbors or something. That really makes sense to me

      this can apply to all online gaming really, I don't use voice chat functions much because I know I can be heard outside my room if I talk loud enough for the mic to clearly pick up what i'm saying and would rather not annoy family during night time or bring unnecessary attention to myself regarding certain topics my younger siblings shouldn't hear about.

      that is true and theres a lot more reasons aswellm some people like me just physically cant speak or cant speak properly anymore. my reason was because i had a stroke and i have a rare type of aphasia. sometimes its due to brain damage or trauma or damage to the vocal cords or people just not feeling comfortable to talk at all, or as the guy said in the video some people just feel more comfortable to talk through body language. some people may be trans and dont want people judging them or missgendering them, ect ect theres so many reasons why people could be mute yet no one ever thinks that way. most people think everyone who is a mute is a trap, which is completely and utterly stupid, yes some people are like that but that doesnt mean everyone is.

    To be honest, I'm mute because I'm shy and I have experienced people making fun of me. So, I figured I would just stay quiet, and nobody would say or do anything to me. If I'm quiet I'm like invisible to everyone. They barely notice me which makes me able to not get into an argument that I'm obviously not going to win. (I'm afraid of losing and dealing with the embarrassment and guilt plus with everyone around watching me, its humiliating)

      me too, i have a disorder that kept me isolated for most of my life and now that im an adult, navigating social situations is hard, i cant do it. being mute in vrchat and any vc game is typical for me, even though i am not a true mute. i can talk, but its harder to try to communicate with people. i try to fill the loneliness by staying around people and interacting when possible, and overhearing people having a good time. im planning to learn sign language because i wish i could communicate better

The feel of people interacting with me and just letting me play with them in silence is something that is a huge comfort. But there are tons of people who complain at you for not talking which sucks.l

    I remember the one time I decided to be mute for a few minutes,this one person decided to go off on me for being a "mute", he then goes and ends his little mean spirited rant by telling me to unalive myself, like, bruh. So imagine his reaction when he learns that I'm actually not a mute! I told him off, he tried to apologize to me and tried to friend me, but, no! After he said all those terrible things to me, why would I want to be friends with him? I bet he was waiting to say that to an actual mute and bask in his assholery for giving an actual mute person a terrible day that day or something.

    I was selective mute for the first couple weeks in VRC. I was simply overwhelmed with this whole new universe, and the unique social rules. I felt really awkward, but I was determined to push through until I understand why also mature people enjoyed this space. In time I started occasionally speaking to people who were being friendly and kind. Fast forward a year and a half and I’m super comfortable and have lots of friends.

      I too am trans, and I totally understand the "be perceived as a guy" thing. What I actually learned is that friends I have will not judge me on what I sound like, or who I am. Just need to find those who accept you for these things. if you ever want someone to talk with, and if you can catch me on (i have an odd schedule) just look me up, at * ~JadeVR~ *

  • @ChickenSoup141
    @ChickenSoup141 2 ปีที่แล้ว +84

    I was mute for a very long time because i'm trans. what went through my head was that if i put on my avatar and didn't talk nobody would try to clock or misgender me. right? of course nobody would they are just going off of appearances. i just wanted people to see me as a guy and do nothing but that and my voice gave me away. my voice makes me different from other guys and the last thing i wanted was to be different. now something that i learned was that i was just around the wrong people. people who no matter what i tried so desperately to do would never see me the way i wanted to be seen. thus i decided since i like genshin maybe i would meet some like minded people and i did! i talk so much more when in genshin worlds than any other place in vrchat. i urge other trans folk on vrchat, if you feel like the people who you have surrounded yourself with don't treat you the way you deserve then they aren't your friends. friends don't go around making your identity a joke for others. they don't parade you around like some freak. friends are people who at least try and make the effort to understand you. don't settle for transphobic e-boys just because you thinks its all you've got. trust me there are people who are just like you. you just have to find them.

    • @jadevr
      @jadevr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You're 100% right on that. I'm a trans-female, and my voice isn't as feminine as others, due to going thru voice training and such, but the people I know like me for who I am, and those that don't or want to make light of me, oh well, they'll be blocked and muted instantly. There's always going to be haters and trolls causing issues, but the friends I know, stick up for me more than I could ever hope anyone would.

    • @GhostlyCanine
      @GhostlyCanine ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm exactly the same, I met a few people I am comfortable talking around but refuse too in public worlds. When I used too it would be nothing but misgendering or people swarming because I sounded like a woman (pre-testosterone), also it's kinda more fun to have to be expressive and use body language to talk :3

    • @jadevr
      @jadevr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GhostlyCanine I've gotten to the point of not caring what people have to say about me. 8 out of 10 people that might have been questionable about me at first, usually end up either just accepting it, or actually becoming friends with me after a short period, because they actually get to know me. That's the thing with a platform such as VRChat. You have to take a risk, put yourself out there, to get to know people, and vice-versa.
      Not always as easy to say or do, I know that. But as I see it, the ones that mock and act out, they're a small handful of immature teens/young adults, or kids/pre-teens, who think they're so funny and awesome, but will find out how harsh it can be, when they themselves meet up with someone that ridicules them. Karma has a bad way of running over one's' Dogma.
      To be honest, I get more people, of both genders, flirting with me and wanting to befriend me now, after my transitioning, than I did before! Don't be afraid to take a chance, you never know who you'll find. 😻

    • @JFresh25

      @Jade VR wanna life hack, download clownfish if you're on pc and raise your pitch. I'm sure you speak in a feminine way so now all u gotta do is raise your pitch to nail it. Which you can do with clownfish

    • @jadevr
      @jadevr ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JFresh25 I appreciate the information, thank you for that. ❤
      But, as for me, I want to be honest with people. I don't want to use a voice changing software to *enhance* my voice, as that not really me then. while I get the idea of changing the pitch with it, it's not how I sound for real, you know?
      Truly, the people I'm best friends with, the ones that are at my side, no matter what, we've grown to know one another thru complete honesty, and we speak off VRC. We're even discussing plans for meet-ups, real life.
      While the thought is very much appreciated, again, I just would rather be who I truly am, keep my voice as it is, and those that don't like it, well, they can move along. But to be honest with you? More times than not, when I tell people I'm trans, many of them are like, "Wait, you're trans? I thought you were a woman. I had no idea."
      So, apparently, some do realize that not all females have high-pitch voices. Which, if people could understand that, things could probably be a little better. But even if not, I'm still better than those that try and ridicule me, as I'm accepting of people in whatever they choose to be in their lives.

    A true mute is someone who will not speak at all, but they are willing to text chat or ASL with you. I have met many who are willing to text chat and teach me some sign-language. The ones who just "mute themselves" are normally called: Semi-mute. They can speak and have no trouble doing it, but choose not to until they are comfortable around the people they are with. I have met 2 honest to God mutes who have had serious illnesses take their voices away and the only sounds they can muster are hums and grunts. They are extremely sweet people too and they care so much about everyone.

  • @Kalrisi_Rei

    I'm personally only mute when I am alone world hopping or in huge group events because I am a generally shy person and social interaction without a directive (EX. Customer service at work which I am great at VS meeting random people at a bar and starting convo) can be pretty difficult, I tend to use my whole body language to express myself and also use the typing feature in the game thats been added if my avi doesn't have a marker.. also keeps me from sitting down just like your friend said in the video. I however am usually not mute when I am with a friend group where there are people I know. I'm the kind of person that tends to have to think what they say before they say it or I end up saying really out-of-pocket stuff which is fine around friends, but can get weird around new people due to my lack of a filter, and I choose not to use my customer service skills to talk to new people as it feels disingenuous as any food/service-worker will tell you it isn't really "real". Other than that the only other reasons you may find me mute is me either playing music through voicemeeter which refuses to let me talk and play music at the same time... or maybe.. just maybe I lost track of how much w33d I smoked when I do and then I need 20-30min of mute time because my brain can't process much else.
    I should also mention mental health side of things as a person with a pretty severe diagnosis of ADHD that causes derealization (a state of feeling like everything around you isn't quite real, almost like you are in a dream when you are awake) pretty often my brain is either constantly on overdrive or completely blank with a couple moments of clarity in between so from my experience that definitely has something to do with it as with sensory overload, For me my brain just goes to complete nothingness, can hit along with being shy. Having to process spoken language along with expressive body language can also overwork my brain. But in the end I still do try to communicate in as many other ways as possible if I can't bring myself to speak around new people! The trapping stereotype does get brought up a lot though, but I'd say a majority of mutes (Not Physical Mutes) have reasons ranging from Social Anxiety all the way to just being more introverted people who wanna break out of their shell in a way thats more comfortable to them. There's even a few psychological mutes I know who have had traumatic experiences or other mental effects such as more severe social autism that cause them to not be able to pronounce words properly or even speak at all, every mute has their reasons for sure. As a personal example going back to sensory overload, it puts me into a state of what could be called "psychological mutism" due to my brain literally going completely blank as I said before; Others with Mild-to-severe ADHD and even people with Autism and other various disorders that can effect social interaction can probably relate to that. To describe it best I can, your body physically will not listen to your brain, you may not even be able to process your own thoughts let alone what others say, you might not even be able to bring yourself to move at all. You can definitely look for signs! If you see a mute and they are fiddling with their hands up to their chest or stomach area, or way too still (but not in a sleeping position) or maybe they might have some sort of other tick you notice like with their feet or shuffling side to side, chances are they are anxious/nervous or overloaded themselves so the best thing you can do is approach in a none-overbearing way.
    And since I have heard it a lot as well, for those that say things along the line of "this is a social game where you are supposed to talk" and "why would you even play it.." C'mon now, its a proven fact that loneliness can kill, every person, even the most shy or anxious people want some sort of social interaction whether they admit to it or not, its only human ^~^ Not everybody's IRL living situations can allow for comfortable social interaction.

    i'm a mute, i've been playing on off for the past 2-3 years now (i'm user raking now). There are really two main reasons why i don't talk, the first is that, well i'm a younger trans woman, and i kinda used vrc as an escape from gender dysphoria. however, in more recent times, after doing some-ish voice training i have a passable voice. But, then we have the second problem of me not being out in my household, and i don't what to risk something like that. so yeah, that why i'm mute, it has affected my enjoyment of the game at times but i always come back. plus i also make words an stuff so that always fun.

    I just got my Oculus recently and im mute in VRChat too due to experiences I made irl. Im having a hard time engaging people ,starting to talk to them etc.
    Even irl I dont start conversations very often. Im pretty confident in my English talking skills ´n stuff, but what I experienced in my past caused by people made It hard for me to take action myself.
    im severely disabled irl and my experience just makes it hard to just start talking casually to people. I sometimes feel like I would love to talk but here starts my problem again, so Im pretty much mute all the time If Im walking around solo in VRChat.

    I think also part of the reason people are mutes is that they can be anyone they want. It's like a form of act where you act as your fictional character. When you reveal your voice that doesn't match who you're acting as it's kinda weird. It's almost like you're starting to dislike your own voice because it doesn't represent who you want to be

    I was a mute way back in 2019 when I started on VRC. I didn't play much, until April of 2022. That's when I really got into the game, and started making my own avatars. I met my 2 closest friends to this day in that same month. We play games outside of VRC almost every single day. Regardless, I was a mute all the way up until October of that year. I was (and still am) very insecure about my voice. I only started speaking because nobody could spare a few seconds to read a chat message, read body language, or learn ASL. I was fed up with how impatient and careless people are. If you ever meet a mute, don't just blow them off. Listen to them, they're just people- like you. They may end up being your all time best friend. The day I met my 2 best friends I mentioned earlier, I was still mute. The difference between them and everyone else was that they gave me a chance to show who I am, instead of just saying it. They were shocked and happy to finally hear me reveal my voice to them almost a year later. We are all each other's best friends, even over everyone in our own real lives. I could never have asked for better friends. Thank you Ash & Hog for giving me a chance.

    As someone who was a mute [a drunk mute at that] I do agree that being a mute definitely meant being able to communicate more via body language and overall just act more crazy. I ended up getting trusted within 150 hours as a mute and met almost all of my friends as a mute as well [even though I now talk] after 6 months of being a mute then stopping I do find myself starring at a mirror in 11pt fbt and just talking lol no more jumping around and overexaggerated body expressions. I do kind of miss that, but I'm still glad I'm not a mute anymore.

    I've always been voiceless on the internet to be honest. VRC in extension. In real life I am a introverts worst nightmare. I will approach random people and start a conversation because, why not? I have absolutely no perception of what people see me as because I work for my local council and occasionally just go to public places in cosplay. (I am surprised with how chill the council is about it XD)
    I guess the appeal for being mute to be, personally, is the fact that I get to sit back and watch instead of being so active and starting conversations. Its really good to have a version of myself where I can listen. I know NZSL (Learning ASL so I can communicate better in VRC) and often use the chat-box when asked a question. Its surprisingly fun being mute (to me at least), and a change that I need.
    Life story, over!

    Me being mute in game is 1. My voice.. I once was playing and decided to speak. I then was made fun of by these 2 guys (most likely around 16) and told me I sounded like a 4 year old. 2. I have social anxiety and social awkwardness. 3. I overthink. I think I’m talking too much and I’m annoying so I stay silent. And finally, 4. Because I’m spaced out talking to myself.

    I am a selective mute person, i have lateral cricoarytenoid Paralysis which makes my voice very weak and it makes me very anxious and lonely, So i became mute, I found it easy to make friends on Vrchat Because most people Didn't criticize me for using the chat instead of my voice.

    I keep myself mute now because my social anxiety has scared me into being unable to speak in public vr spaces. My first experience playing vr wasnt the best one, ill say, and i was really afraid of speaking or even going onto the game. Im still warming up to it, ive been traveling around and one of my irl friends owns the game and such (as a veteran actually LMAO) and showed me around for an official "first time". Hopefully ill be able to chat with others sooner or later, im getting there and trying really hard to, but its still really hard and scary lol

    easiest way to be mute when not being mute is probably to just say what youre thinking while acting it out while being very self contained
    anyway,
    after being stuck with text chat for so many years and programming my brain for text chat and never actually talking to people, switching to voice chat is very abrupt

    I'm always mute because I just like to watch, VRChat is a wild social experiment in my eyes and seeing people just simply -be- is so fascinating. I do break my silence if someone makes a serious attempt to engage with me but I always limit it to just text in one-on-one scenarios. I don't really know why its so interesting to observe like this; hard to put it into words. Kind of like going on a wildlife expedition in another country?
    There's always so much to learn, and I know one day I'll mic up and join the party - maybe even get VR as a whole. Just not now. I'm comfortable here.

    Some mutes can technically used their voices, but most people have vocal chord issues. Like no matter how much you pay the highest price for a mic just so you can have people hear you better, but with your vocal chords that small, people won't be able to hear you either way.
    Like my own experience as well, ever since I have VR with me, I got so excited to greet people. Sure people can hear me, but there are those who can't hear me. I've done my settings in-game and other software to make me sound better, it only goes for a sucession of 5%. Slowly it just felt like I rather approach to people that's actually more approachable with my vocals being genuinely small. I wanna have a higher volume in my lungs, but there is pain that prevents me doing that high. The more I used it as often, the worse that it get that I almost lost my voice. So there have been moments where I just wanna be a mute or not.

    I used to be a mute because I was embarrassed that my family members could overhear me talking (I lived with my family at the time) but now that I am in college, I am more open to talking. However, I do still share a 1-bedroom apartment with a roommate as of now, so I still self-censor sometimes.

    Honestly, I became a mute because one time I wasn't careful with my words, and then I ended up losing lots of my good friends, I also became shy at the same time too so I decided not to talk because I just always think that if I talk, something tragic will happen, that's probably my social anxiety, when chatboxes were introduced, that made it easier for me talk while not actually talking, of course some of my friends don't want me to be a mute, saying that they feel like they're talking to themselves, also saying that chatboxes aren't enough for them either, they also see mutes as detached people who just dive deep into despair when they try to get attention this way, but still I just prefer not to talk since as I mentioned I'm shy and also I did something bad back in the day.

    selective mutism is a big part of it, some of us physically cant talk to strangers because of psychological reasons, others its physical mutism where they are mute irl due to vocal cord issues
    I can speak, i know some asl, but i shut down around strangers...i have severe social anxiety so psychologically i cannot speak until i feel comfortable, it feels like my vocal cords are paralyzed and the wave of anxiety i get trying to speak is awful...eventually I can finally talk but it takes a while though i prefer to be mute because im socially inept...im attempting a autism diagnosis and a proper selective mutism diagnosis

    I'm mute purely because while my brain is good at conversing, my mouth refuses to do anything with it. Idk if that's considered non-verbal. Like I can talk and do daily. But if I can avoid it comfortably I will. If I could be mute in my real life without people getting worried or thinking there's something wrong with me, I absolutely would. It also gave me more drive to learn sign which I also prefer to actual speaking. I wish I had that extrovert power of being able to speak my mind but most of the time, I just don't :(

I just dont know how to join a convesation in a meaninful way so i usually just stand around people talking and do the usual mute body language stuff to express my oppinions and reactions to what they are talking about. If im directly talked to then I might talk too, but a lot of the time if they just ask a simple question, I just answer with body language. Also im not a native speaker so i ha e a thick accent and a lot of people strugle to understand me anyways

    In IRL I would still talk to people and get eye contact or interaction with a person, maybe cause if I don't talk back it would be rude. But in VRCHAT I really can't get myself to talk even tho people are trying to talk to me so I just became a mute and honestly I kinda like being a mute, not because I'm shy, I just don't know what to say and I find my actions are better than my words in VRCHAT. And I'm a mute just to make someone's day better by simple body "hands" movement interaction with others.

    Im a VRchat mute, my avatar makes sounds that I can communicate my feelings with for what people say to me or jump and give pats to people I meet. Im basicly like this because I see myself as a small creature who just tries to spread love in an wholesome way. I listen to people, people have found me to be a person who they can share their thoughts with, they talk about their sadness and loneliness. Even tough I dont talk, Im helping people and Im happy to make people happy. And im a little bunny who only want cuddles.

And i like being mute because people get to know me for me and i dont say anything back i just use hand gestures to comunicate. I used to speak alot on vr chat but i got bullied for sounding like a 12 year old so i just stop talking and became a mute. Also when you are mute people like to fill that silence with their own thoughts and opinions so you get to hear others point of views genuinely more often cause they feel like they cant be talked back to or judged...I also am not good at making conversation, but those other two things are my main reasons. lol Also LOVE being a goof and doing silly dances and being super expressive since I feel like I cant irl

    I started vrchat as a mute after watching twitch and thinking “I could do that, that could be a fun little adventure”
    Literally no experience and no idea what im doing besides from what I saw on twitch. Went and used covid money to get full body and index controllers.
    Turns out I did pretty good cuz someone that worked with the people that I was watching just so happened to have found me on my first day and thought my account was an alt for a streamer or something lol
    Almost 4 years now and im still mostly a mute.
    Talk to some friends in discord but I’ve had some twists and turns on how I do things, ai voice was a thing for a while but I think it made me lazy and I don’t have as much body moment, and now that im taking that off I do feel like I can be “me” even if it’s less of me you’re getting if that makes sense.
    Also used speech to text as a replacement for pens when that released, still use that when I absolute have to actually communicate with someone and hold a conversation but if I can help it and can just vibe and not say a word, that’s where I feel like I’m truly “being a good mute”, whatever that means.
    Talking just makes me more socially awkward and I feel like my perception of myself from others or myself just doesn’t cut it like that.
