    I absolutely ADORE your videos. That neighborhood reminds me of when I took a stroll in Ikebukuro and ended up in a 7-Eleven buying jelly desserts. The street looked a lot like that one, maybe with slightly taller buildings. Melon pan was my favorite. I tried it the first time at a Lawsons I think, and loved how buttery and soft it was. Luckily I've found a couple bakeries in a neighboring city that sell it, as it's one of my favorite japanese baked goods. I also remember a condensed milk and cream bread loaf I bought at a 7-Eleven in front of Osaka castle, it was DELICIOUS!

    Manage to get those milk pan at my first visit to Tokyo in 2018 and it's a frickin food sent from heaven, the cream is akin to a twinkie but taste actually better and the bread is filled to the brim with it.

    I understand that 7-Eleven tailors its products to the tastes of each nation in which it does business. You showed us 10 different savory and sweet breads available in Japan, Shinichi--lots of interesting variety. And entrees, there, are generally pretty fresh and healthy. The foods offered in U.S. 7-Elevens make me a bit sad about what we Americans have been indoctrinated to accept as "food." 😬😅

    • @meira574
      @meira574 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And who eats the foods at 7 eleven in the U.S.? Nasty old hotdogs and pizza. Ugh, no thank you. At least the coffee is decent usually.

      7-eleven in japan isnt actually 7-Eleven tho. Its Seven and i holdings, a separate group made to wrestle some control of the japanese market back to the person who brought it to Japan.
      Its quite an interesting story actually. Theres a documentary of it somewhere but i just cant seem to find it atm.

    I was a bit thrown off by the bread that said "Sugar and Shortening." Like it was using actual crisco as a topping on the bread. Granted, you can use vegetable shortening to make a cream filling, it's the main ingredient in oreos.

    • @deeashford2456
      @deeashford2456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shortening is used in lots of icings as well

    • @angeltt4390
      @angeltt4390 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Youre basically right, its shortening, most likely either some milk powder or flavoring and sugar (granulated and powdered) whipped (the whipping makes it whiter - kind of like how egg whites go when beaten) to make a "mock" cream, its more stable (doesnt deflate) than dairy cream and usually doesnt need refrigerating.

    I really like Melon Pan, but I've never been to Japan. Not yet anyway. There's a small shop and restaurant nearby run by a Japanese family though, so I'm lucky enough to have tried things like yakisoba pan before. I'd love to try curry pan, and the pizza-egg pan looked really good too.

    I'd love to try the melon bread for sure and the cinnamon roll looked delicious; I don't have much of a sweet tooth, so less sugar would be perfect for me.
    Actually, I'd try them all, but corn and mayonnaise would be a challenge for me to eat. I'm sure it's not as bad as it sounds to me though. I've never liked mayonnaise but after watching numerous videos that showcased Kewpie Mayo, I bought some and I found it rich, creamy and delicious.

    My friend and I visited Nagano shrine on a very cold day. On the walk back to the station, we bought fresh melon pan from a bakery. It was warm, crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside. So much better than conbini melon bread! Another memorable snack was hot senbei from a street vendor in Kamakura. The breads in conbinis are good if you don't want to eat real Japanese food, but there's usually a bakery near major train stations and their bread is better. Still, I wish that Japanese conbinis existed in Australia! We have 711 but it's rubbish. :(

    I don't like the smell of cinnamon, that makes me dizzy, but I love the taste! Always extra cinnamon in my homemade apple pie.
    Never really been a big fan of the sweet breads in Japan. I don't have that much of a sweet tooth, except for plain melon pan. I used to eat at least a day as a student. Nowadays most are too sweet for me hahaha. I would try the okonomiyaki pan for sure (though still not sure if it is bread; looks more like a pancake to me), but indeed eat it with chopsticks.

    I LOVE cinnamon, the smell and taste. It is warm and comforting and makes me think of cool fall days, favorite foods and drinks (e.g., apple cider, snickerdoodle cookies, cinnamon rolls, spiced apples). The white sugar and shortening bread is a turnoff to me, and I suspect most Americans. Besides the major negative media attention given to shortening and other trans-fat products, the mention and inclusion of shortening as a major ingredient (in the filling, I suspect) just sounds gross.

    I love how 7/11 has put English translation on their packages. Wish it had been like that the first time I visited Japan. Even if the translation doesn't sound appetizing or rough, they are trying. 👍 Also, you are being too critical. It's convenience store food, not a mom and pop bakery where everything is fresh daily. Everything you tried is mass produced.
