Turkish Shepherd Starts Protection Training

  • Here we have a first time test of Barön being used in a personal protection drill. He has had no training nor have we put him in this situation before. As you can see, his natural instinct is to warm of intruders from getting any closer before leaching out to fend off from a possible attack to handler. Although he is seen here giving it some effort, this is only a small fraction of what our boy Barön is capable of. The intruder is a close friend and has been around Barön since he was a small pup, he had recognised him behind the mask hence why he wasn't giving it 100%. We did this to insure everyone's safety, as had Barön somehow managed to escape, our friend would simply remove his mask and we would all be quick to calm the situation.

I can’t consider this protection training nor do I think Kangals should be trained to protect. Their guarding instincts are 5000 years old. This was playtime for this big guy. Look how he breaks his focus on the‘assailant’ whose scent he clearly recognizes. If he thought the threat was viable, he would not break off . The handler had to coerce him to stay focused on the task because the dog knew from all kinds of cues including the handlers body language that there was no threat.

they still need to know how to take orders which is the point of this training. So that they dont attack when they feel like it only when told to do so. Youre a smart one i see.

Totally agree. I have a Mastin Español mix who I have extremely socialized. He's always off leash and because of it, and his socialization in general, he's very confident and balanced. He's great with people (especially kids) and animals. Still, he is always on guard as it's in his nature. He will act appropriately if he notices something suspicious. Meaning he'll warn if that suffices but if need be he'd take more severe measures but only in case of actual danger. Again, proportionally. He's prevented theft, break-ins and protected me, and other dogs simply by warning, all without any protection training or whatsoever. Imo this kind of "protection work" is completely unnecessary, actually counter-productive, and potentially very dangerous. There's a reason schutzhund training starts with obedience and only if the dog passes the obedience tests it can start protection work. That's simply something LSG's aren't bred for as they're much more independent.

@@williamdavis9562 some dogs will surprise you. Years ago I had a lab/Shepherd mix that looked and generally acted pure lab. She was just happy and loved retrieving. One day I was walking her and some rather scary looking guy behind me laughed at her and said "that isn't much of a guard dog." He kept coming closer. He was literally only a few feet behind us. She bristled up, bared her teeth and turned towards him growling loudly. That was the first aggressive thing she had ever done in the year I had owned her. The fear in his eyes was priceless. He quietly took off in another direction. But she only acted aggressive if she thought something was a problem. Otherwise she was a sweetheart to everyone. Your dog may be like that. When it senses what it thinks is a real threat to it's family you may see a different dog.

She's a companion dog first and foremost and a very good one at that.
I just find it funny how terrified this girl is of everything. If I buy a new car, it takes a week to get her comfortable enough with it just to get in. hehe
Just like humans some dogs just have odd personality traits. Overall though she is a fantastic dog and I'm basically with her 24 hours a day and take her everywhere with me. Very well behaved dog especially in public.

Notice his tail wagging? He’s not worried about that guy at all, nor does he think he’s a threat, he’s playing. When Kangals sense a threat their tails go straight back and don’t wag at all. If he thought he was a threat he would have ripped that leash out of that guys hand and shredded that guy. I have two Kangals for livestock protection dogs, I had one on a leash once and he heard a coyote and took off and I had not the slightest chance of holding him back. He killed the coyote and came back covered in the coyotes blood…

Depends on its family, has a herd protection instinct and family protection instinct It is aggressive towards strangers, does not escape like other dogs, bites from arm or shoulder, causes serious injuries. It kills the wolf If Kangal's number is 3 or 4, he can even attack a bear. Male 80 kg His tongue is 65 kilos usually If you do sports, it is a well-trained and fast dog. Shouting at the Kangal dog angrily scolding him annoys him and I recommend that you approach him calmly

Kangal is not a personal protection dog but it has evolved as Sheep Dog. It looks not much interested in the attacker but instinctly looking around in a typical Kangal fashion as these dogs have to consistently look around for predators. Secondly Kangal is not a dog that will blindly follow your order like GS or malinois as these dogs are independent thinkers. These dogs analyze the dangers and make decisions on their own. So every dog breed has a specific mentality and to train every dog in a single fashion may not be a good idea.

I hate to be the mom in the comments but this is a bad idea. This dog isn't meant for this type of thing, and you two are doing it wrong. Don't train them for this sort of thing, get a Malinois, Dutch or German Shepherd. These majestic beasts are not meant for "protection" work. With that being said, that's a nice-looking pup, you should get him doing work that will enrich his life. Don't do things to agitate him like that. They are super smart dogs and are prone to make their own decision. All this is going to do is make him more likely to maul someone in some Adidas trainers.
Also if he was looking to harm that guy, he would have. He was just doing what he does best and barking at the dude for being suspect. Those tight pants are a dead giveaway. LOL

This testing is completely wrong, before you start any form of k9 sercurity, protection, police or military training the dog has to undergo a temperament test, I'd be very interested in seeing how he does, I'm not saying he isn't capable of the training but having someone come up to your dog in that manner he will react in some way. Please research properly before attempting this work it's dangerous, look for a professional to help, if that's the standard your putting the bar to before high level obedience training someone is going to get killed and kangals are amazing, we don't want to add them to the banned list because someone got killed by a poorly trained dog.

It might not be wise to train a Kangal or other Turkish livestock guardian dogs like the Malakli or Boz as a personal protection dog! They are very smart but extremely independent with a mind of their own! If they perceive a threat to their family, they will react without any training anyways. With personal protection training, you will have a powerhouse of dog on high alert and on the edge! Furthermore, recall doesn't work with them like it does with PP dogs, so you'll have a killing machine on the loose!
