I've loved this incidental music for a long time. In some ways, it is atypical Sibelius, and, to me, he's not entirely convincing with the orientalism of the first movement BUT somehow the whole suite works...and it's still among my favourites of the composer's. Great performance by the NZSO....
The version I first heard had different tempos. The Processsion was a little faster and more compelling. I hope there is a more complete score out there waiting to be discovered.
There is a selection of ten pieces available in other recordings, such as Segerstam's with the Turku Philharmonic (also on Naxos). I think that's about as complete a version as there is.
