That delicious and rare moment when, as soon as you've listened to a piece of work for the first time, you already know that it will become one of your favorites.
It's based upon a poem by the Swedish poet Viktor Rydberg, "Skogsrået" ("The Wood Nymph"), about a young, strong and handsome man, who one moonlit and windy autumn night, walks through the wood, on his way to a celebration. Forest spirits make him loose his way, and lead him deeper and deeper into the unknown, where he is bewitched and seduced by the Wood Nymph. Afterwards he never more can find joy in life, he becomes endlessly depressed and prematurely aged, always thinking about that enchanted meeting, deep in the dark wood.
I was there! Hearing it live was better than any recording, and I loved the tempo the conductor took it at. An absolutely wonderful piece, I hadn’t heard it before then, I went for the planets, but I’m hooked now.
From Alan, This is sibelius at always his best, But why is it not included amongst the other tone poems on box sets, The wood nymph is a Masterpiece, Bye for now.

I've listened to this piece way more times than Sibelius ever did!! No joke :)
I arrived here thanks to TwoSetViolin and their shenanigans. Beautiful piece!!!
Me too!
Me too!
Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant..........only Sibelius
I am a Drum n Bass producer and arrived here after listening to 'Dom n Roland's' - Tone Poem. Completely different genres yet both master composers.

Just watched a televised performance of this delightful rarity conducted by Sakari Oramo from the 2024 Proms.
Me too! Wow, never heard it before.

Why im listening to this beautiful piece of a Finnish man at 3 am?. i have class tomorrow
This is so underrated
Totally agree with that
I really don't know why this piece isn't played more. There's so few recordings.
That's because it's not rated at all. It's tragically ignored.
16:01 Beatlesy mixolydean pattern on the harp...
Truly astounding piece of music.
Why is this hardly ever played in concert halls?
From about 2:00 - 8:00, it's almost like a template for a kind of minimalism......only far better.
I like minimalism and absolutely love 2-8 mins of this piece but the last word in the world I’d use to describe those wonderful measures is minimalist
Composition de Sibelius fort jolie !

Absolutely, like his other early work, Kullervo, a masterpiece from the composer I consider the greatest of them all.
This is early Sibelius. In fact so early that the opening bars could be taken as the signature of the arrival of a new voice.
What do you mean about the first bars?
It's about as long as the entire seventh symphony isn't it? This is a lovely work
A partir de la 11e minute, cette oeurvre est SUBLIME et contient déjà en germe tout le futur Sibelius.
It is a very good piece, but I also do think it 'shoots its wad' in the first nine minutes.
SO, show me what you got.
Pfft! That's an incredible feat! Not only that, it continues on!
