I think one of my earliest experiences of Sibelius (after my 9 or10 year old mind had been "blown" by the Intermezzo from the "Karelia" Suite) was the "Scene With Cranes" (5:10-11:24) which may have been on an LP of my parents. I recall an old encyclopedia that had some stories from the Kalevala (including some of those famous images that crop up from time to time on the covers of Sibelius recordings) which struck a chord in me long before I knew anything about the composer. That one piece, and its title, was, at the time I first heard it, gripping yet beautiful. Even now, listening to the haunting incidental music, some of the composer's best, as a whole, I find myself drawn to it and also now the "Canzonetta", remembering those awakening years.........This is a stunning performance, exquisitely recorded, by the NZSO and Inkinen.
