    Geraldine Chaplin turns and then approaches Sharif as if doing a ballet maneuver. The embrace is so full of warmth and grace. She trained in ballet.

    I particulary love Leans touch of the horse with its foal bringing them to the house, full of hope.

      Prior to becoming a director, David Lean was the editor of British Movietone News.
      He certainly knew the power of film to tell a story.

    I've always loved the scene after they get off the train and Tonya looks around in wonder taking simple pleasure in the beauty around her,says so much about her,though she was born to wealth,she wasn't spoiled by it,her parents were wonderful people who completely took Yuri Zhivago under their wing and loved him,Tonya was so in love and devoted to Yuri she even accepted the relationship he had with Lara though its not shown in the film,you get the impression she suspected but didn't want to trap him...I would have loved to see the not shown scene between Lara and Tonya after Yuri disappeared/kidnapped when they meet for the first time.

    • @nancyhey1012
      @nancyhey1012 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the book, yes she did accept the relationship, although grudgingly, but because she felt that what was most important was for Yuri to be happy. It’s all explained in a letter that Tonya writes to Yuri toward the end of the novel. But she still feels sad because she feels that Yuri no longer loves her. But she thinks that he will be happy with Lara.

      Acting of omar sheriff is the worst. If some other actor had been (with better acting and from eastern europe or russian),it was better and far better film.

      @@sanjivbansal4798 I agree for authenticity it would have been better to have someone from Eastern Europe, however, I don’t think that Omar Sharif’s acting was bad.

    Sad that most of the main characters are now dead, or in their dotage.
    However, films like this preserve them forever in their youth, vigour and splendour.
    The critics panned this film, as they did most of David Leans great films.
    The public were not influenced.
    I formed the opinion, if the critics pan it, its got to be good so go see it.
    If the critics wax lyrical about it, avoid it like the plague!

      I agree. David Lean made beautiful movies. I think the word epic is overused. When I think of a movie that's epic I think of this movie and Lawrence of Arabia. The city, the revolution, the train ride to the country. Beautiful scenery. Lawrence of Arabia and the vast beautiful desert. I love a lot of his films. And Alec Guinness is in several and I enjoy anything he's in. There's a beautiful movie called "Brief Encounter" with Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson that he directed, too.

      The worst film I ever sat through, was one the critics waxed lyrical about; ''The Blair Witch Project''
      It was quite the most abominable film I ever went to.
      The only reason I stayed, was because my 15 year old daughter had taken me as a birthday present.
      Even she didnt like it!
      The sequel bombed!
      Rightly so.

    Not the greatest movie, necessarily, but one of the most memorable. Scenes, lines, and the music have lived in my mind all my life. Exactly the sort of movie that is sadly no longer made and never will be again.

    I love this movie, but never understood where the "country home" in the Urals came into the picture. Did rich people have these far away estates that needed a multi-day train trip to get to ?
    Was this property owned by the wife's family ?

    • @CountArtha

      Yes. His father-in-law owns a town house in Moscow and a country estate in the Urals. He is understandably outraged when the Bolsheviks take them both away.

    • @nancyhey1012
      @nancyhey1012 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's true, it was very similar to the situation that led to the French Revolution.

    • @pixelpatter01

      Both the French Revolution and the Russian Revolution took place when the status of the lower class was improving. Both countries would have been immeasurably better off if the Revolutions had not taken place.

    • @nancyhey1012
      @nancyhey1012 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But even if that is true, how would the peasants have known at the time that revolution was not necessary?

    • @niklar55
      @niklar55 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nancyhey1012 It wasn't the peasants that started the revolution, it was the group known as the ''Illuminati''
      The leaders were trained and financed in the USA.
      The object was to destroy the Tzar and his whole family, as they stood in the way of Rothschild's attempt to bring in the ''League of Nations'' the first step in their attempts to set up a world government.
      The same group were responsible for the French revolution, both world wars, and all the wars since.
      They are still at it.
