wanted a new project for the channel and being a Vw man it had to be a T5 transporter I found it on eBay listed as spares repairs non runner. can I get it running and drive it over 100 miles home.
Loved the vid 👌🏾 i must admit that most of my projects tend to be ones that need TLC in some shape or form especially replacement engines. Its a nice feeling knowing that you have saved a car and brought it back to life 💪🏾

Great video as per usual Nathan. That looks a good van you've got there, it looks tidy for the age. Great that you made the trip back in the van rather than having it recovered. You don't see many early vans with the correct bumpers/lights etc these days. Everyone seems to go for the modern look. I quite like the early vans 👍 I'm sure it will be sweet whatever you do with it.

Hey, nice to see a T5 project on your channel. I started my project about 2 years ago, however that is a 2.0 CR, and looked significantly worse than yours, however it did not have any engine related issues other than a leaking EGR pipe. Mine had a lot of creature comforts inside. What I added is the multifunction steering wheel (from a B7 passat), reverse sensors (it's a must for these as you can do a lot of damage when reversing into something or somebody) cruise control (on the facelift the electronics are different and by default compatible with these stuff). Installed two tinted side windows and actually a 3rd row of seats in the second row, with seatbelts and mounts and everything. Also repaired the drivers seat (mine was torn), repaired the bodywork. Later added a discover media PQ, backup camera. Later on I plan to do a tailgate conversion from the t6 with the led taillights, new style bumper and add a tow bar and a working OPS system that works with the Discover media. Also to upgrade the gateway to communicate with the mentioned discover media. These vans have a lot of possibilties... BTW I bought it to convert it to a camper originally. Ah yeah, forgot to mention the two most expensive plans: 6 speed conversion and a complete repaint and body repair of small dings.
Hey Richard sorry for the delay, it’s surprising what dings and dents can be picked up by some owners at any age I’m really lucky this one is pretty straight. I’ll have to look at the Passat steering wheel that sounds interesting, I agree with parking sensors or rear camera I’ll definitely be doing that. I definitely want to put some windows in I was thinking of doing 2 windows either side as they look really good With them all in. Unsure on how many rear seats to fit, maybe just a second row. I do like the look of the t6 back end and I’ve seen the parts ain’t to expensive so that’s on the list. I’ve read about the later gateway stuff to communicate with the upgrades. I have a jumbo transit that I use for a camper so maybe just a basic fit out in this one to make it more comfy. 6 speed conversion would be nice but I see the bits are abit pricey, this box is really nice and smooth so I’ll stick with it for now. Nice one dobs, love a transporter, getting one to convert very soon! was going for a caddy, but as we want to do weekenders the transporter is next best, cant wait for this build series bud!! I love my pd105 1.9tdi 04 golf, bloody good engines i tell you!
Hey Dave thank you mate appreciate that 👍 yes the caddy is good for a daily but a little small for camping weekends etc so has to be a T5. The pd’s are the best 4 pot engine in my opinion this one has done almost 300k, a quick head gasket replacement and it would be away again 👍
Nice find, it's certainly in better condition than my 2015 T5.1 with 202k. Bought it 3 years ago from my then employer with 192k just before the prices went crazy, I haven't done much to it and I don't use it as often as I'd like to but I love it. I had 17" Devonport wheels, 50mm Vogtland springs & Bilstein B7 shocks fitted when I got it, it looked great and drove really nicely with no scrubbing or clearance issues but a pothole has just destroyed one of the B7s so I'm putting some low mileage standard stuff on for now. I started working at the company when the van had 120k on it and it always knocked from the front suspension. When I bought it I took it to the garage and all they could find was knackered anti roll bar bushes so we changed those and to their credit it did the trick. Since I had the suspension done I had a horrible knock from the front left, took it to the garage several times and they couldn't find the issue. I found the culprit myself a few weeks ago - the jack was loose in the box under the passenger seat!!! One thing my van also suffered from was loose steering, felt like bad track rod ends but they were fine. While it's in getting the suspension changed, I've asked them to go over the whole system for me. They've found the offside front wishbone rear bush has started to fail and there's play in the steering column so I'm having new wishbones, ball joints, steering rack, steering column UJ, struts, springs & top mounts fitted this week, hopefully it'll be sorted after that. Powerflex do uprated suspension bushes so if you've got a press, it's definitely worth looking into. Looking forward to seeing what it turns out like, I prefer them 1 colour personally, preferably red or aubergine but it's certainly a cheap way of updating it's looks. Good luck with it!
Hey Tom thank you for the feedback, I have no idea on what suspension to use but I’ll definitely look into the setup you have, shame about your alloy. The wheels and tyres on this one are really tidy but I’m going to put a slightly bigger set on to fill the arches. Oh man this one sounds really bad over bumps so I reckon everything you mentioned this will need. I’ll lift this one up on the ramp and spend a while looking at everything in the next video. I’ll definitely look into some poly bushes for a few areas as I want it to drive as nice as can be. I agree with you about a single colour I’ve never done a 2 tone paint job before but there’s 2 in my town with it done and they look really nice. Im not decided on colour choice yet just longing some ideas out there. Thank you again for your comment really appreciate that 👍👍

I am so, so excited for this build! Absolutely loved watching your Caddy series whilst I was building mine. Really regret selling mine now though 😔 Paint it red to match the Caddy - will be the ultimate VW van fleet. 100% go with the PD130, they fit straight into these. What's what I put in my Caddy. 👌
Hey Dan thanks mate glad you enjoyed the caddy vids 👍 I did think about the same colour on the t5 they would look good next to each other. I’ve got a pd130 block in the workshop but the oil filter housing is different as it’s from a mk4 so prob have to buy another.
@@YTDTETV I had to use a block from a Fabia VRS in my Caddy as it uses the smaller cooler - not sure if it's the same story with the T5? I don't know much about the T5's but whatever happens, I know you'll make it work 😃
@@mrdanfaulkner yes the early pd 130 have an oil cooler that pokes right out and the later ones have it tucked in closer to the block. The T5 doesn’t have room for the big filter so need to find a later block to go in it.
mate I'm a big fan of the VW, specially the vans and love the caddy's, with your T5 it just proves how well made these engines are, a proper pd like the 130 /150 ASZ / ARL are bomb proof as you well know and even kryptonite has no affect 😂 as you have the eye for the VW i just know you T5 is going to look pucker. 👍

@@YTDTETV I'm very courious what is the reason for coolant loss on yours, if there was no egr cooler on this model is it only rad split or broken pipe?
@@RobertP7884 so I will get to the bottom of the problem even thow I’m changing the engine but Ill give a diagnosis in the next video. The oil coolers are known for failing on these but then the oil mixes with water and it’s definitely not that. It must be something head gasket related as the water bottle pressurises and that’s what’s burst the rad. When I take the old engine out I will remove the head to see for sure.
Hey Shane thank you mate really appreciate that 👍 yes it does flap about. Most people would change belt and tensioner but you must know your stuff as it’s normally the alt pulley as you say.

Decked a few out myself a few times , I’d put 2 windows in the sides like a kombi , leisure battery under passenger single , diesel heater under drivers seat mounting heater under the van, sound deadening insulation , carpet line n you got a sweet van

Wound up driving with me head out the window as there was so much steam from the vents I couldn't see out the windscreen 😂 was great craic at the time, bit older and wiser now (just a bit!)

Nice van that mate, a lot better than my ex refrigerated butchers van, mines on 298k and I drove it to Spain last year 😂 I’ve just got a pd130 engine for mine, might be worth looking for a 6 speed box for it, the 5 speeds don’t take power very well at all
Hey Jim thank you mate I was happy with the condition, cor your mileage is up there to. Trusted it enough to drive that far then 👍, that’s the first thing I’m going to do on this one in the next few weeks is put the PD130 in as that’s the main issue with it. Ill be making a video on it. Ye I’ve read the 5 speeds ain’t that good, what I’ll do is get my remap guy to make the power no punchy but have legs if you know what I mean to save on the gearbox.
Had the same problem, i took it to three different garages and no one but the last guy could work out what was problem was, it turns out it was the auxiliary water pump, that was after a new water pump, two thermostat’s and a new housing, going great now

Lovely T5 would look nice in your caddy van colour also is it the PD 105 if so you should think about putting a PD130 in it strong don't worry about the long videos mate always enjoy watching your videos keep up the good work

Early 5 speed t5s hav gearbox issues and the usual dual mass flywheel issues. Wiring problems on the sliding door and under the seats. I replaced every bush on my 04 t5 with 250k and it drove like new. Good luck pal

Hey bud I’ve read issues with gearbox’s. At the moment this one runs real nice but if it does go I’ll pull the box apart and rebuild it. My friend who came with me to pick the van up has a transit he uses most days and I have a jumbo transit as a camper, I love them but hate welding 😂

Yes the Fabia and similar cars have the slightly later engine and are Ment to be stronger so I will be fitting on of those and I think that’s the most important job getting it to run well so I think that’s first on the list. I drove a Fiat Cinquecento from Andorra to the U.K. with no coolant at all. Took the front grill out to air cool it, should have took radiator out, but it made it.
Hi Billy thanks, you are absolutely right and I was and still am contemplating putting a petrol engine in this as it would make it more desirable for the Ulez system.
Little trick for any engine thats pressurizing, drill a couple of small holes in the top of coolant bottle so steam escapes and just keep it topped up if it starts losing water

Might be worth trying a set of pd150 headbolts for the sake of £20 might just be slight headlift n the radiator leaking won’t help might be worth trying bita rad sealer n see what happens also might have a decent donor pd130 in couple months ifit fails mot if any interest 👌

Not a major point but.. High mileage electric windows. Check out the mechanism thoroughly. Some plasticky bits in there that give up the ghost leaving you with glass at a jaunty angle.
Hey Chris that’s a really good shout it’s high mileage so any grease from factory would be gone by now and I’ve had windows drop at a wonky angle and always as it’s raining 😂 I plan to have the door cards off so will give the plastic wheels a lick of grease. Thank you for the comment 👍

Hey Darren I did think about that but my only concern was k seal blocking the heater matrix up as I’ve seen that happen before, fixed a gasket leak but blowers where crap after.
Thank you appreciate that 👍 I use a cheap truck wash degreaser for cleaning everything then on the engine for abit extra punch I use an alloy wheel cleaner by AUTOSMART. Is pokey stuff 👍
Tidy for its age and mileage. Don't forget it isn't compliant for ULEZ or CAZ zones if you're unlucky enough to live anywhere near one. Don't fit too big a wheels it ruins the ride. 18"s are as big as you wanna go.

@DTE TV I had 20"s on mine, looked great, rode horribly. Put some nice 18"s on it and they transformed it. I read around engine swaps, it's a real hassle to get them re-registered as compliant, but I suppose if you're swapping the engine anyway would be worth looking into. Unfortunately had to get rid due to the CAZ's, so now I have a Japanese import Mercedes Viano (zero rust) with the m112 3.7v6 petrol as its ULEZ/CAZ compliant.
@@BRED510 it’s surprising how much difference in ride quality from dropping just a couple inches, there’s a guy on Facebook that fits tfsi’s in caddy’s all the time and it’s not me to be that hard but I’m unsure. This van will be for sale and there’s alot of T5’s out there so to make it stand out from the crowd and be worth more a petrol engine would do it but I’m in decided I need to do abit more research first. Oh I do like a Vito 👍 they look really good, I like the foot space in the front no gearstick in the way etc. very nice 👌
Looking forward to this ! I recently baught a 07 T5 2.5tdi electrics are going crazy left indicater staying on ,front wipers come on in reverse and horn constantly beeps ,central locking not working either would wrecken BCM ? Van has stood for a few months fine before

Does tours sound tinny aswell if I sit and rev it sounds sweet but while driving sound load lol not sure if it's me or weather cam shaft needs doin I'm not sure how ther ment to sound 🤔
Ah have you checked the water pump?I've had that before the impeller fell off the shaft so wasn't circulation I'd put my house on it and looks like it's boiling because it's not getting around hence the cold heater
@@YTDTETV the mini video was fun to watch I had a few of them nearly 30 years ago gearbox is in the sump bomb proof motor The carb is pure simple su unit damper in the middle lifts up with vacuum lifting the needle just be careful the pipe might be brittle with age

What I added is the multifunction steering wheel (from a B7 passat), reverse sensors (it's a must for these as you can do a lot of damage when reversing into something or somebody) cruise control (on the facelift the electronics are different and by default compatible with these stuff). Installed two tinted side windows and actually a 3rd row of seats in the second row, with seatbelts and mounts and everything. Also repaired the drivers seat (mine was torn), repaired the bodywork. Later added a discover media PQ, backup camera.
Later on I plan to do a tailgate conversion from the t6 with the led taillights, new style bumper and add a tow bar and a working OPS system that works with the Discover media. Also to upgrade the gateway to communicate with the mentioned discover media.
These vans have a lot of possibilties...
BTW I bought it to convert it to a camper originally.
Ah yeah, forgot to mention the two most expensive plans: 6 speed conversion and a complete repaint and body repair of small dings.
Hey Richard sorry for the delay, it’s surprising what dings and dents can be picked up by some owners at any age I’m really lucky this one is pretty straight. I’ll have to look at the Passat steering wheel that sounds interesting, I agree with parking sensors or rear camera I’ll definitely be doing that. I definitely want to put some windows in I was thinking of doing 2 windows either side as they look really good With them all in. Unsure on how many rear seats to fit, maybe just a second row. I do like the look of the t6 back end and I’ve seen the parts ain’t to expensive so that’s on the list. I’ve read about the later gateway stuff to communicate with the upgrades. I have a jumbo transit that I use for a camper so maybe just a basic fit out in this one to make it more comfy. 6 speed conversion would be nice but I see the bits are abit pricey, this box is really nice and smooth so I’ll stick with it for now. Hey Dave thank you mate appreciate that 👍 yes the caddy is good for a daily but a little small for camping weekends etc so has to be a T5. The pd’s are the best 4 pot engine in my opinion this one has done almost 300k, a quick head gasket replacement and it would be away again 👍

Nice find, it's certainly in better condition than my 2015 T5.1 with 202k. Bought it 3 years ago from my then employer with 192k just before the prices went crazy, I haven't done much to it and I don't use it as often as I'd like to but I love it. I had 17" Devonport wheels, 50mm Vogtland springs & Bilstein B7 shocks fitted when I got it, it looked great and drove really nicely with no scrubbing or clearance issues but a pothole has just destroyed one of the B7s so I'm putting some low mileage standard stuff on for now.
I started working at the company when the van had 120k on it and it always knocked from the front suspension. When I bought it I took it to the garage and all they could find was knackered anti roll bar bushes so we changed those and to their credit it did the trick. Since I had the suspension done I had a horrible knock from the front left, took it to the garage several times and they couldn't find the issue. I found the culprit myself a few weeks ago - the jack was loose in the box under the passenger seat!!!
One thing my van also suffered from was loose steering, felt like bad track rod ends but they were fine. While it's in getting the suspension changed, I've asked them to go over the whole system for me. They've found the offside front wishbone rear bush has started to fail and there's play in the steering column so I'm having new wishbones, ball joints, steering rack, steering column UJ, struts, springs & top mounts fitted this week, hopefully it'll be sorted after that. Powerflex do uprated suspension bushes so if you've got a press, it's definitely worth looking into.
Looking forward to seeing what it turns out like, I prefer them 1 colour personally, preferably red or aubergine but it's certainly a cheap way of updating it's looks. Good luck with it!
Hey Tom thank you for the feedback, I have no idea on what suspension to use but I’ll definitely look into the setup you have, shame about your alloy. The wheels and tyres on this one are really tidy but I’m going to put a slightly bigger set on to fill the arches. Oh man this one sounds really bad over bumps so I reckon everything you mentioned this will need. I’ll lift this one up on the ramp and spend a while looking at everything in the next video. I’ll definitely look into some poly bushes for a few areas as I want it to drive as nice as can be. I agree with you about a single colour I’ve never done a 2 tone paint job before but there’s 2 in my town with it done and they look really nice. Paint it red to match the Caddy - will be the ultimate VW van fleet. 100% go with the PD130, they fit straight into these. What's what I put in my Caddy. 👌

@@YTDTETV I had to use a block from a Fabia VRS in my Caddy as it uses the smaller cooler - not sure if it's the same story with the T5? I don't know much about the T5's but whatever happens, I know you'll make it work 😃
@@mrdanfaulkner yes the early pd 130 have an oil cooler that pokes right out and the later ones have it tucked in closer to the block. The T5 doesn’t have room for the big filter so need to find a later block to go in it.

mate I'm a big fan of the VW, specially the vans and love the caddy's, with your T5 it just proves how well made these engines are, a proper pd like the 130 /150 ASZ / ARL are bomb proof as you well know and even kryptonite has no affect 😂 as you have the eye for the VW i just know you T5 is going to look pucker. 👍

@@YTDTETV I'm very courious what is the reason for coolant loss on yours, if there was no egr cooler on this model is it only rad split or broken pipe?
@@RobertP7884 so I will get to the bottom of the problem even thow I’m changing the engine but Ill give a diagnosis in the next video. The oil coolers are known for failing on these but then the oil mixes with water and it’s definitely not that. It must be something head gasket related as the water bottle pressurises and that’s what’s burst the rad. When I take the old engine out I will remove the head to see for sure.

Decked a few out myself a few times , I’d put 2 windows in the sides like a kombi , leisure battery under passenger single , diesel heater under drivers seat mounting heater under the van, sound deadening insulation , carpet line n you got a sweet van

Wound up driving with me head out the window as there was so much steam from the vents I couldn't see out the windscreen 😂 was great craic at the time, bit older and wiser now (just a bit!)

Nice van that mate, a lot better than my ex refrigerated butchers van, mines on 298k and I drove it to Spain last year 😂 I’ve just got a pd130 engine for mine, might be worth looking for a 6 speed box for it, the 5 speeds don’t take power very well at all

Trusted it enough to drive that far then 👍, that’s the first thing I’m going to do on this one in the next few weeks is put the PD130 in as that’s the main issue with it. Ill be making a video on it. Ye I’ve read the 5 speeds ain’t that good, what I’ll do is get my remap guy to make the power no punchy but have legs if you know what I mean to save on the gearbox.

Had the same problem, i took it to three different garages and no one but the last guy could work out what was problem was, it turns out it was the auxiliary water pump, that was after a new water pump, two thermostat’s and a new housing, going great now

Early 5 speed t5s hav gearbox issues and the usual dual mass flywheel issues. Wiring problems on the sliding door and under the seats. I replaced every bush on my 04 t5 with 250k and it drove like new. Good luck pal

I just sold an 09 one of these original van , but had the usual 5th gearbox issue ! Pain in the arse van ! Give me a transit anyday .
Hey bud I’ve read issues with gearbox’s. At the moment this one runs real nice but if it does go I’ll pull the box apart and rebuild it. My friend who came with me to pick the van up has a transit he uses most days and I have a jumbo transit as a camper, I love them but hate welding 😂

Yes the Fabia and similar cars have the slightly later engine and are Ment to be stronger so I will be fitting on of those and I think that’s the most important job getting it to run well so I think that’s first on the list. I drove a Fiat Cinquecento from Andorra to the U.K. with no coolant at all. Took the front grill out to air cool it, should have took radiator out, but it made it.

Little trick for any engine thats pressurizing, drill a couple of small holes in the top of coolant bottle so steam escapes and just keep it topped up if it starts losing water

Might be worth trying a set of pd150 headbolts for the sake of £20 might just be slight headlift n the radiator leaking won’t help might be worth trying bita rad sealer n see what happens also might have a decent donor pd130 in couple months ifit fails mot if any interest 👌

Mines just gone over 700K original clutch,gearbox etc Had 4 waterpumps and a few driveshafts ...otherwise all original. Mines a 174 bhp

Not a major point but.. High mileage electric windows. Check out the mechanism thoroughly. Some plasticky bits in there that give up the ghost leaving you with glass at a jaunty angle.
Hey Chris that’s a really good shout it’s high mileage so any grease from factory would be gone by now and I’ve had windows drop at a wonky angle and always as it’s raining 😂 I plan to have the door cards off so will give the plastic wheels a lick of grease. Thank you for the comment 👍

Don't fit too big a wheels it ruins the ride. 18"s are as big as you wanna go.

I read around engine swaps, it's a real hassle to get them re-registered as compliant, but I suppose if you're swapping the engine anyway would be worth looking into.
Unfortunately had to get rid due to the CAZ's, so now I have a Japanese import Mercedes Viano (zero rust) with the m112 3.7v6 petrol as its ULEZ/CAZ compliant.
@@BRED510 it’s surprising how much difference in ride quality from dropping just a couple inches, there’s a guy on Facebook that fits tfsi’s in caddy’s all the time and it’s not me to be that hard but I’m unsure. This van will be for sale and there’s alot of T5’s out there so to make it stand out from the crowd and be worth more a petrol engine would do it but I’m in decided I need to do abit more research first. Oh I do like a Vito 👍 they look really good, I like the foot space in the front no gearstick in the way etc. very nice 👌
Looking forward to this ! I recently baught a 07 T5 2.5tdi electrics are going crazy left indicater staying on ,front wipers come on in reverse and horn constantly beeps ,central locking not working either would wrecken BCM ? Van has stood for a few months fine before

I can get to bcm under steering wheel I’ll check tmrw for damp also no communication with scantool ! Thanks for reply appreciate it you that’s into youre vw,s said id be cheeky and ask 😅

Hey bud they can sometimes sound abit weak, same engine in a different vehicle sounds different for some reason. Good mileage still plenty life left 👍
Does tours sound tinny aswell if I sit and rev it sounds sweet but while driving sound load lol not sure if it's me or weather cam shaft needs doin I'm not sure how ther ment to sound 🤔
Ah have you checked the water pump?I've had that before the impeller fell off the shaft so wasn't circulation
I'd put my house on it and looks like it's boiling because it's not getting around hence the cold heater

@@YTDTETV the mini video was fun to watch I had a few of them nearly 30 years ago gearbox is in the sump bomb proof motor
The carb is pure simple su unit damper in the middle lifts up with vacuum lifting the needle just be careful the pipe might be brittle with age
