eating less meat is a good place to start but a terrible place stop... the issue is most people have slightly decreased their consumtiom of animals and now have a false sense of justification so they don't feel bad about eating animals for the rest of the week. from an environmental stand point switching to chicken or turkey is a better option than eating less beef. but the best option is just to go vegan.

To name a few, it states that pigs & chicken's don't produce methane, which is incorrect, & they push the misguided & common myth (which is beautifully debunked in a movie you may have heard of, called Cowspiracy) that "grass fed" cows produce less methane than "grain fed" cows; of course the reality is exactly the opposite, by many times over. They also mislead viewers by ignoring the facts that all other animal agriculture also unsustainably uses huge amounts of water & feed, contributes to massive air/water pollution, & benefits huge from corporate welfare. There are many great short videos that explain the realities of animal agriculture, but this sadly isn't one of them.
Good points. However the amount of methane that pigs and chickens produce is practically insignificant compared with ruminants. You produce methane too lol Grass-finished cows do produce more methane than grain-finished ones, but the millions of acres of cropland that would be freed up by converting to grassfed livestock could be used to offset at least 3 times the greenhouse gas emissions of all cattle in the US alone by converting them into biomass plantations. Saying that "All other animal agriculture also unsustainably uses huge amounts of water & feed, contributes to massive air/water pollution, & benefits huge from corporate welfare" is totally misleading. It is true for industrial agriculture but not for regenerative organic practices. Green Goblin i understand why you feel so strongly. what you have to understand is, Americans have been lied to regarding saturated fat. look up the traditional diets of tribal africans, native americans, australian aborigines, pacific islanders, etc. they all ate meat with the fat and had perfect health, no diabetes, no heart disease, low rates of cancer, etc. of course, the meat they were eating was very different than the meat we eat.

now i just want to educate myself more in these matters, that's the best thing young people like us (i'm assuming you're young too) can do. I don't think my conscience could handle being in a profession that had no way to affect the direction our environment is headed. "in the end we will conserve only what we love, love only what we understand, understand only what we are taught."
I do appreciate they in kudos their resources at the end and where to find out more information on the subject. I feel some vegetarian and vegan videos forget to back up their assumptions with actual facts. This is a video I could send my friends without being worried about logical fallacies
In another video they said if you must eat beef grass fed is worse because the cows usually occupy more land per cow and take longer to grow to butchering so emit more methane. Which is true?
And killing them is just cruel:( working at Walmart I see how much gets tossed were killing them for no reason. So glad I went vegan, I hope to see more people do it.
I'm in the University of Helsinki studying Environmental Economics. I recommend you begin studying subjects tangent to this. you get a good grasp of what's going on 'behind the scenes' with regard to these questions, which are by far the most important questions humankind has faced. you get to see the actual obstacles and problems and solutions and players and everything.
Converting from the CAFO production system and global distribution system to a 100% grass fed system within regional distribution systems would free up enough cropland that, if converted to biomass plantations, would offset 3-4X more greenhouse gas emissions than all the cattle produce in the US alone, and that excludes the additional emissions from the distribution system. In other words, by converting to pasture-finished beef we can produce all the beef we currently consume while offsetting all the emissions and free up millions of acres that can be used to offset other greenhouse gas emissions. Industrial agriculture is the problem, not meat.
I only disagreed with you about the "too much grains" because we eat too many refined grains and not enough WHOLE grains, whole rice, whole oats, whole wheat (I can't, Celiac), whole quinoa!
University of Hawaii research found risk of type-2 diabetes grew by 43% in men and 30% in women who ate lots of meat. Those who ate processed meat stood a 57% higher risk in men and 45% in women. A separate study at the same university showed individuals eating lots of processed meats were 67% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer.
Its baffling how almost every good video I manage to find on this topic goes downhill at their conclusion by appeasing meat consumers, compromising because "we don't have to give up meat, just cut down a little bit" since the idea of promoting actual change and effort is apparently unreasonable for people who've just been told we're destroying the planet through our consumption of animal products. Earth will die right under our feet through our choice to accept inaction.
You know what I like this video a lot, because this is not a stupid vegan fact about meat, this is a good argument looking for reduce meat consumption, without telling people that eating meat is an ultra sin, nice video I like it a lot!. :)
A tax would reduce the demand. Many experts already proposed a tax on meat, sooner or later this seems inevitable: www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/dec/11/meat-tax-inevitable-to-beat-climate-and-health-crises-says-report
What you don't realize is that while corn is subsidized it really isn't that much. 82% percent of the FARM bill budget is actually for food regulation and when you consider the amount of farmers there are in the US each farmer only gets around $100 dollars in subsidies
This video was great until the end. We need to completely cut out meat from our diets. It's too late for us to simply cut out animal products once a week. With the human population increasing at tremendous rates, we all either become vegan, or destroy our planet.
+Chris Lowe You're right that lots of heavily processed foods, such as some meat subs, aren't great for the planet. What I should've said is a whole foods, vegan diet. But processed food doesn't even come close to the environmental impact that animal agriculture does. Studies show that animal agriculture is responsible for up to 51% of greenhouse emissions. Compared to transportation (cars, buses, train, boats and planes) make up 13%. And all it takes for half of our greenhouse emissions to practically disappear is to stop consuming animal products.
+Jack Dempsey polarizing views don't really contribute to the cause. We need to advocate and encourage *less* consumption because taking an absolute vegan approach actually annoys people to the point where they consume more out of spite. I used to be one of those annoying people, but now I try to lead by example.
+Randy Plett It didn't annoy me. I was working on organic animal farms. Helping with slaughters, and thought I was doing things right. Then came across new information and that was the end of it. People need to open their minds. The planet is the one who is really getting annoyed and has the ability kick us all out.
+Jack Dempsey that's nice. Of course people need to open their minds, but they won't if this kind of polarization and extremism actually closes their minds. Extremists and alarmists don't have the leadership skills needed to actually change the way the world works because they often lack empathy, which in turn prevents people from realizing there are some good ways to improve their diet. I prefer to take a more positive approach, and appeal to the possibility of better health, more energy, and cost savings. If you just tell them the sky is falling, they will tune you out.
Actually it would, farmers and ranchers use what is called a stocking rate, which is the amount of acres of grass it takes to raise a cow and her calf. In eastern Kansas the average stocking rate is around 10 acres per cow/calf pair. In drier climates it can be as high as 100 acres per cow/calf. So if we went to raising all cattle strictly on grass you can only imagine how much more land area we would have to utilize to raise all of the feeder cattle that we produce.
Thought this video was good till she says stop meat one day a week. What about the other six days?. I've been vegan for 14 years and doing just fine. And part of my taxes goes to subsidizing the meat industry, plus I will have to suffer the effects of what everyone else is doing to this world. The standard american diet causes a huge strain on the health care system. It's like 50 years ago when they knew cigarettes caused cancer and did nothing about it. The facts are there with food now, and look how many people died from smoking. ggrrr
Grass fed beef is a great alternative for those who wish to buy it, however it takes longer for those animals to gain weight and therefore the total carbon foot print of grass fed beef is actually higher, as they're being fed for more days. This also means that their methane production is greater than an animal raised in a feedlot. As you mentioned, beef production employs a lot of people and creates a lot of revenue for the US. A balanced diet is always key, but beef can be in that diet!
There are alot of problems that comes with eating meat, not only Co2 and the immens bodom pollution, but also diseases such as cancer (scientific proof that without a doubt cancer is linkt to eating red meat), heart and vascular diseases, diabetes, etc. I'm vegan for a little over a year now and lost 5 kilo's already. Not much but every kilo helps ;-) . I'm very happy with the choice I've made cause I'm not only feel better healthwise, don't participate on the immens animal abuse and try to leave a small footprint instead of a big one on our planet. This is our home, we have no where else to go.
there you go again. the 1% are out to get us and it is a giant conspiracy to invoke carbon taxes. arghhhhhh. wake up the elites have been hiding and putting out misinformation for years. ExxonMobil cover up goes back to the '70s and some say before that. the Koch brothers are still funding groups that act as deniers and fight any climate change mitigation. you are either a troll, a halfwit or work for a group that is paid for the Koch brothers. I would like to think one of the first two options. wake up and smell the science. and your comments that you were vegan for years is very doubtful, if you were vegan for the ethics you wouldn't revert, if you were vegan for the environment then realistically that is a new phenomenon and so is being vegan for the health benefits and so you wouldn't have been vegan for years. so I've decided. your just a troll.
I just looked up all the Environmental Studies courses in my school and I'll add them during the next registration period. Thanks for the much needed insight. What's your name friend?
Very interesting but to fully comprehend this one needs to look at the money system that drives our economy. Most of our money is created by private banks and loaned to us at interest. This control of the reward system gives those banks a lot of power. They give money to factor farms because they can make big returns even if they trash the planet doing it. People who engage in humane clean farming are less attractive and get less capital for research to improve clean methods
"Improve cleaning cost" good point but I don't think you k ow the whole story. Recently I found out more and more about big companies like Tyson, and Ibp (I'm not sure of the name) for example. Most farmers get into huge debt and contracts with these companies. I suggest watching Food inc. It talks a lot about the problems in the food industry, the USDA and FDA, and families that have been affected.
Honestly, though I don't agree with you completely I do agree on subsidies. As a corn and dairy producer I'm not a fan of the subsidy program. As farmers because we are subsidized no matter how small we are viewed as rich, greedy, uneducated, and people think we have no regard for the animals we care for and the environment that we depend on. Subsidies are pretty much a slap in the face even if i were to get $1000 from the gov. That wouldn't even cover the cost for me to put seed in the ground
Meekseek but animals get their b12 from vegetables. it isnt like it is only in them. it is such a sad excuse. "hi I'm human, i know animals are living beings, i know animals are being mas produced and it is creating pollution and eating food we could give to malnourished people (3 billion people actually) but I just dont want to take supplements. even if i will be healthier."
Meekseek 40% of the planet is B12 deficient. Vegans roughly make 3% of the world population. You don't wanna take pills, you can get injections our sublingual supplement. By the way, B12 is artificially given to cows, wether you want it or not, you're actually getting those pills. So the world's dying now... What are you waiting for?
if the cows weren't fed CORN. They WOULDNT have this problem. Did you not hear when she mentioned a law got passed that involved corn?? The cow is being fed corn, the cow is getting E.coli, the cow is being abused everyday till its death. Then its meat is showered with ammonia.
@@supermario69kraftgami23 But it also frees up all that cropland used to produce their feed. One grain-finished cow requires 1 acre of pasture (where they spend the first 6-9 months of their lives) PLUS another quarter acre to grow the feed. Thus, a grass-finished cow uses 20% LESS agricultural land than a grain finished cow.
@@supermario69kraftgami23 What if going vegan is greenwashing on behalf of the plant based meat industry, including the industrial ag industry? I can make a very compelling _ecological_ argument against veganism.
I'm Indian nd this makes me feel even more superior than before cuz I've never touchd a burger in my life and I am nothin but a strict vegetarian. All u stupid ppl stop eatin meat. U saw how bad it is and it is nothing but cruel and sick.
Sandra Carli I think she mostly said that because some Americans are so unwilling to give up meat. If it did happen it would help but definitely not in the long run, but people that still choose to eat meat nothing we say will change their minds. It's so easy for some people to just drop everything & be vegan. I didn't do a transition period I became vegan after I watched one video for others it doesn't impact them the same way sadly..
Course information. From newborn to pound of packaged meat in a supermarket, 'mass-produced' leaves less a mark than small-farm organic meat. mostly this boils down to the fact that small farms produce small batches of meat, which are generally trucked around. this results in a high footprint per pound compared to mass-produced meats which are also transported in bulk.
My idea is that if they are correct (which they aren't) and the number of animals needs reduced we need to reduce the number of animals that are of least value first. Reduce does not necessarily mean drive into extinction (although there are still species that I would see driven into extinction before the number of livestock is reduced). All of this is predicated on the assertion made in the video that the number of animals producing methane needs reduced.
I brought them up because after you said whales are bad tasting, so I said Japan disagreed, then, ah heck, the conversation brought them up. As for the second half of your comment, I don't think we reduce numbers of any livestock/common food animals (Salmon) before things that are less useful to us.
And yes i totally agree with you, in the grand scope of things this video may get very little done, but isn't that due to the lack of character in people currently? i don't try to pretend to be in anyway knowledgable on these matters but i have done some reading. Overall, I just wish people had more concrete answers to problems that seem very dire to me. Anyway if you are tired of me ranting you can end the conversation. I like hearing people explain their beliefs logically. Thanks for the chat.
You may be right, but I can't verify your information. The video suggests the reason corn is being produced in such quantities today is subsidies. I'm inclined to agree, because corn is now used in gasoline, almost every food product I can think of, and cow feed. A few decades ago this wasn't true. Also, in my opinion even a $100 subsidy for every farmer in the country is too much. Every dollar is taken out of the economy in taxes, unavailable for potentially more efficient investment elsewhere
Great Video! In the past 3 months I've went from eating meat 7 days a week to once every 6 weeks. Feels good to add my grain of sand to a good cause plus the food is more enjoyable! Good self control/will power exercise too!
Kudos for significantly reducing your environmental impact. Many people are becoming "Flexitarian" aka "Reducitarian" for the environment. The most effective version of that besides reducing overall, is to completely boycott beef, and preferably also dairy, since cows have the biggest negative impact and use the most resources like fresh water. However, going fully plant based has the biggest impact.
Can anyone refute any of these compelling reasons to boycott animal products? 1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get the most common chronic, deadly diseases) 2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases 3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen. 4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year! 5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution 6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation 7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions. 8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity 9-Needless killing of innocent, sentient beings cannot be ethically justified. 10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation. 11- Longer lifespan. 12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.) 13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance 14- Vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of dementia later in life 15- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third! 16-A fully plant based diet improves the immune system according to a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health 17-A fully plant based food system would greatly reduce food borne illnesses like salmonella 18-A fully plant based food system would be able to feed millions more people. Our population is growing! 19-A fully plant based food system would save 13,000 lives a year from the air pollution caused by animal agriculture, according to a study 20- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1 trillion in health care and related costs (Oxford Study) Links for some of these are at my channel under "About." If you doubt any of them, I would be glad to cite evidence from credible sources to back them up. TH-cam only allows a certain number of links at my channel. After I made my list, I found this video with his own list which overlaps mine. He cites evidence from credible sources in the description. th-cam.com/video/uc6Mjms1rhM/w-d-xo.html
Wrong. Just...don't make that argument. Yammer all you want about ethics and shit but don't tell me almond or soy milk is better than milk or cheese, tofurkey is better than turkey.
While the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's claim that cattle contribute more to greenhouse gas emissions than transport has come under attack, there is little question that cattle contributions are still significant.
I think the point of that part of the video was that we give cows a lot of needed *clean drinking water*. Sure they piss it back out, but the real issue is that we have little ways of filtering a heavily contaminated water-based liquid
That's what people said about Super Size Me that people would abandon fast food and it hasn't happened, it will take more than a documentary to get many people off this stuff.
Fantastic video! This is the type of information that should be readily available in schools and other educational facilities. Everyone should know the cost of the products they use!
But is stopping feeding corn to cattle a solution? If we went back to feeding cows grass, would the land-area required per pound of beef only increase? Not sure.
Grassfed beef also takes up significantly more land

Thank you for raising awareness about the meat is murder industry!
when asked to care about anything but themselves, most people say "no". this is how the world got to be so effed up.
I eat one like every 2 1/2 months
now i just want to educate myself more in these matters, that's the best thing young people like us (i'm assuming you're young too) can do.

Very well-made video! Definitely sharing!
Grass fed is much much worse for the climate than factory farms per kcal produced. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26486913
Exactly- plants. It can be done and it is waaay healthier if you do it right.
I only disagreed with you about the "too much grains" because we eat too many refined grains and not enough WHOLE grains, whole rice, whole oats, whole wheat (I can't, Celiac), whole quinoa!
CRAZY HAMBURGER
University of Hawaii research found risk of type-2 diabetes grew by 43% in men and 30% in women who ate lots of meat. Those who ate processed meat stood a 57% higher risk in men and 45% in women. A separate study at the same university showed individuals eating lots of processed meats were 67% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer.
Even with one burger per week, it still adds up a lot.
I eat over 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I ain't giving up hamburgers & steaks so some tree hugging, tofu-eating hippie can feel "more at one with the planet". PERIOD!
Right on. We are omnivorous, not meant to be soyboys

Watching this has made me hungry.. I'm off for a Big Mac :P
Ignorant idiot
You know what I like this video a lot, because this is not a stupid vegan fact about meat, this is a good argument looking for reduce meat consumption, without telling people that eating meat is an ultra sin, nice video I like it a lot!. :)
8 years later we see the consequences of animal agriculture first hand 🦠 Covid 19

SO, put a $1.51 tax on burgers, and ... problem solved!
Then you'd be paying $3.02 extra per burger. Adding a tax would not in any way eliminate the healthcare, feed, water, etc.. costs.
+Randy Plett
It didn't annoy me.
+Kathryn Mercier while you may be correct, I think a realistic approach will have a stronger influence than an unrealistic approach.
This a really good video! I love it.
Fuck that. I’m still having my burgers
Crazy Hamburger
I haven't eaten beef or poultry in over 5 years. I only eat fish now. I might even quit eating fish at some point.
You shows have said to not Fckn eat meat AT ALL .
For the "burgers", is it correct to assume that you typically mean "quarter-pounders without cheese"?

Go vegan is to go UN agendist.
there you go again. the 1% are out to get us and it is a giant conspiracy to invoke carbon taxes. arghhhhhh.
wake up the elites have been hiding and putting out misinformation for years.
Perfect example of use of Logos trough vivid imagery in order convey the audience into believing what is being said.
please disprove it
OMG! I'm not eating hamburgers anymore.
there is vegan substitutes for literally everything
No there is not, all vegans are B12 deficent and starving their brains, and it shows.
***** supplements
Tanya Green I don't want to have to take pills in order to get my nutrients.
The only solution I heard from this video was: Let's stop feeding our cows corn. Problem solved.
New idea. Actually blame the cows.
if the cows weren't fed CORN. They WOULDNT have this problem. Did you not hear when she mentioned a law got passed that involved corn?? The cow is being fed corn, the cow is getting E.coli, the cow is being abused everyday till its death. Then its meat is showered with ammonia.
@Crying Underling, grass requires even more land!
@PauliBhoy, IDK if you’re right, but grass-fed might still be worse because it keeps people from going vegan. It’s called greenwashing.
Even eating less meat etc. wouldn't stop the problems we get from the industries. It is better not to eat that stuff at all!
Humans are omnivores, they are meant to eat some meat.
Quespa No
@@throwawaywwwwwww theres nothing natural in meat that we cannot get from plants, ergo we dont need meat.
@@garagexkast if we don't need meat then why do we have canine teeth
Course information. From newborn to pound of packaged meat in a supermarket, 'mass-produced' leaves less a mark than small-farm organic meat. mostly this boils down to the fact that small farms produce small batches of meat, which are generally trucked around. this results in a high footprint per pound compared to mass-produced meats which are also transported in bulk.
WE DO HAVE TO GIVE UP MEAT. A vegan world will save us all.
My idea is that if they are correct (which they aren't) and the number of animals needs reduced we need to reduce the number of animals that are of least value first. Reduce does not necessarily mean drive into extinction (although there are still species that I would see driven into extinction before the number of livestock is reduced).
All of this is predicated on the assertion made in the video that the number of animals producing methane needs reduced.
man this things demotivate me :( , I love hamburgers
bulletman04 Beyond Burgers have a very delicious meaty taste
@@Lilyanna298 exactly bro.
I brought them up because after you said whales are bad tasting, so I said Japan disagreed, then, ah heck, the conversation brought them up.
As for the second half of your comment, I don't think we reduce numbers of any livestock/common food animals (Salmon) before things that are less useful to us.
Meat is murder :(
And yes i totally agree with you, in the grand scope of things this video may get very little done, but isn't that due to the lack of character in people currently? i don't try to pretend to be in anyway knowledgable on these matters but i have done some reading. Overall, I just wish people had more concrete answers to problems that seem very dire to me. Anyway if you are tired of me ranting you can end the conversation. I like hearing people explain their beliefs logically. Thanks for the chat.
With all the cheese, sauce, pineapple, pepper, tomato etc. etc. I put on my hamburger I don't need a meaty one. Veggieburger for me.
pineapple in a burger ugh...you're nasty...
Good Job, You're Saving The Environment.
1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get the most common chronic, deadly diseases)
2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases
3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen.
4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year!
5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution
6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation
7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions.
8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity
9-Needless killing of innocent, sentient beings cannot be ethically justified.
10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation.
11- Longer lifespan.
12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.)
13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance
14- Vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of dementia later in life
15- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third!
16-A fully plant based diet improves the immune system according to a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health
17-A fully plant based food system would greatly reduce food borne illnesses like salmonella
18-A fully plant based food system would be able to feed millions more people. Our population is growing!
19-A fully plant based food system would save 13,000 lives a year from the air pollution caused by animal agriculture, according to a study
20- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1 trillion in health care and related costs (Oxford Study)

While the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's claim that cattle contribute more to greenhouse gas emissions than transport has come under attack, there is little question that cattle contributions are still significant.
You can't scare people with numbers.
Sure cows drink a lot of water, but they pee it back out its not like they keep it forever.
It costs alot to clean that????
This is a very (special interest group) type of video.
Imagine if all that water would go to people in the world who don't even have clean water to drink.
I think the point of that part of the video was that we give cows a lot of needed *clean drinking water*. Sure they piss it back out, but the real issue is that we have little ways of filtering a heavily contaminated water-based liquid
Cows produce a hell lot of methane and they shit all the time everywhere!

Fantastic video! This is the type of information that should be readily available in schools and other educational facilities. Everyone should know the cost of the products they use!
But is stopping feeding corn to cattle a solution? If we went back to feeding cows grass, would the land-area required per pound of beef only increase? Not sure.
