How Americans Are Tricked Into Buying Fake Food

  • The food in your kitchen cabinets may not be what it seems. Fraudsters motivated by economic gain secretly infiltrate the global food market through a variety of means, including counterfeits, dilutions, substitution and mislabeling, according to the Global Food Safety Initiative. This may not only harm consumers’ wallets, but it can also put public health and safety at risk. Some estimates say food fraud affects at least 1% of the global food industry at a cost as high as $40 billion a year, according to the FDA.

    Being an elderly person, my life has passed through the 50's into the many decades that have followed.
    50's -
    Any, every grocery store contained produce that smelled..
    Potatoes, lettuce, beans had aroma that hit you in the face the minute you opened the door .
    That 'scent' is completely gone.
    Even in open outdoor markets where the items might even have been picked that very day.!!
    Then, the explosion of 'products occured. Products and not food.
    Into the 80's the Taste started disappearing. Foods that I purchased over and over suddenly lost their flavors..
    Now, we know that food manufacturers are being geared into openly admitting their 'products' are completely 'man-factured' as a 'Product', instead of actually being a food for human consumption..

  • @petef.4361
    @petef.4361 ปีที่แล้ว +2278

    I used to work in a food production factory here in the US, and we were inspected by the FDA annually. There were two things I always found surprising. #1: I feel like the inspection done by the FDA is not thorough enough, meaning that things swept under the rug by management could easily be overlooked. #2: The hourly employees in my plant, especially those with extensive tenure, saw all the bull$hit that management pulled and corners that were cut. Yet when the FDA came in, there were things that got swept under the rug and the FDA inspectors missed things happening right under their noses. In addition, management followed the inspector around the facility everywhere they went, to make sure us hourly employees remained silent. When an FDA inspector did ask an hourly employee questions, management was right there ready to give us a stern look if we were about to say anything that stepped out of line, even if it was the truth. You can bet your @ss that future employment and promotions within the company were automatically off the table if you spoke up. It makes me wonder if this happens in the place I worked at before, then it must be happening all over the country. We really DON'T know what's going on inside of our food production facilities, and we don't know exactly how our food is handled, or what exactly is put in it. Bottom line, I will never trust the FDA, and if I can't trust the FDA then I don't trust the government either.

    • @theresemalmberg955
      @theresemalmberg955 ปีที่แล้ว +232

      I worked in preclinical pharmaceutical research and I can tell you the same thing happens there. We were ALWAYS briefed before the FDA or other agencies came to inspect. Yes, the inspections were ALWAYS announced beforehand. Management would tell us NOT to talk to the inspectors, and if the inspectors asked us a question we were to refer them to management. I am 100% sure that the FDA and other agencies were aware of this charade; it was only done so that everyone could say that they were in compliance with the law.
      Because of my experience and knowing what goes on behind the scenes I am very conservative as to what I put in my body pharmaceutical-wise. I did not and will not get any of the COVID vaccines for that reason.

      Another scary thing to consider, that kind of employment bullying apparently happens in the medical field too. Roommate worked at a major hospital chain across town for a few years before deciding to go back to the fast food place he'd left prior to the hospital, I'd asked him about it and he said he should've known the after interview application paperwork was the first red flag. To paraphrase him it said 'trying to start or join a union is grounds for immediate termination ontop of a strangely specific NDA', he went on to explain that despite working the 24/7 cafeteria they were only inspected biannually and that management would always shuffle schedules around so their most quiet and loyal employees would be the only ones working that day. I'm no medical professional, but the most concerning detail he brought up to me about why he quit, was that the 'sharps bin' was moved into the kitchen but opposite of the open hallway leading into the kitchen; one of those biohazard boxes to toss bloody tools or contaminated dishware into, was not 15 feet away from the stove tops, yet to put something filthy into it you had to carry it through the active kitchen. I laughed it off until he shown me a snapshot he took while filling in for a graveyard shift, but when I asked him for more he just told me "there's reasons every position below management is a revolving door" and hasn't spoken about it since, at least he's found mundane joy in being a cashier again.

    If you read labels carefully you can sometimes detect fake foods. For example at a lot of dollar stores still have packages of “Parmesan style cheese“ it doesn’t contain any real Parmesan and they say it right in the ingredients less. It’s all in how they word it. For example most cookies and candy labeled “chocolatey” or “fudge”, Likely contain 2% or less actual cocoa or chocolate. I learned that from working on a documentary about the growing harvesting and processing of cacao, the cocoa bean

      Exactly. We have to flip the package over and read the list of ingredients. If I see sugar in any form, I put it back on the shelf. If I see complex scientific names for chemicals, I google it on my phone. I try to shop the perimeter of the store only, quit eating processed foods, and cook everything. There are so many chemicals in our foods. And we need more inspectors for sure.

      Yeah, we have a lot of those in Europe because calling things what they aren't is fraud but saying they're a substitution is legit. So we have natural ingredient "flavour" treats. We have place of of origin "style" foods. They're even talking about changing how the word "milk" is used for anything that doesn't come out of the mammaries of a mammal because almonds and oats don't lactate. So expect "oat based milk style drink" to be a thing. A big news story recently is that the company that makes Toblerone is having to change their packaging because they no longer exclusively manufacture their chocolate in Switzerland so they cannot use the Swiss Alps on their packaging or any other image that might mislead people into thinking it is of Swiss origin.

    I’m 61 years old and I never took what I ate seriously, till I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes 6 months ago. I am now becoming educated on food content, food labels and the fake (even deadly) additives that are in nearly everything. I recently changed deodorant because of the aluminum and other additives in my once chosen brand. It’s incredibly difficult to eat a healthy low carb, low / no sugar diet. The additives, chemicals and overly processed add ins make eating healthy nearly impossible. No wonder diabetes is on the rise as it is.
    In my case I’m responsible for my situation, I took what I ate for granted, steered away from exercise and gained weight. I’m now taking control and am on my way to reversing my Type 2 Diabetes.

So whether it is made from wood pulp (lignin), clove oils (eugenol), or petrochemical sources (guaiacol), the last being what is done today, there is no real difference.
      Vanilla extract just has a variety of other chemicals that give it a slightly more rounded taste in non cooked goods especially.

Granted, even here in Europe there is a big problem with food fraud, but there are at least ways set by the European Union to deal with these issues. It is a good idea to eat less processed food, eventually eliminate them altogether. The trashfood has taken over the globe and now with awareness we can fight back. The way to fight back is by choosing health or work (researching, building relationships, etc.) over convenience.

      @@ianstuart5660 yeah but what do you consider "processed" food? Me and you can have a completely different definition for it. My thought of processed food is heavily processed foods and I semi consider baking anything as heavily processing food, even if you are the one baking regardless if you're using "clean" ingredients. If you mean "stop eating street food and McDonald's" then I'll have you know friend that I have not had a single fast food "food" since 2015 or 16.
      But I do still have cheese, yogurt, sausages, sourdough bread, butter and the like, which as you know are processed foods. So when you say "cut out processed foods", which ones? Also keep in mind that olive oil is processed food and so is any other oil.

    As an Australian who lived in the USA for over a decade, has worked in the food industry for eight years, has specific dietary requirements (gluten intolerance) & just recently received my food handling & safety certificate. I'm aware that "food fraud" happens everywhere, because of the fact that Australia has very strict food standards & regulations compared to the USA. Australia has much less of a problem. In ranking of food quality Australia is eighth place (top non-European country) & the USA is twenty first.

Yet, the number of charges, convictions and penalties imposed are so low that most companies will take their chances. From Scratch cooking helps to avoid the majority of altered food stuffs.
      It also reduces the number of steps between harvest and you, so the less chances of alteration.
      Not a perfect solution, unless you want to grind your own grains and milk your own cows, but better then the labels!

      Sadly, there is such a "hustle" culture in America, that many people do not take the time to make these efforts. Moreover, many Americans are somewhat shamed into asking too many and/or particular questions.
      Domestic workers (who _do_ [make such efforts] and take such tasks/job seriously), AKA stay-at-home humans, are often frowned upon in USA; especially in some cultures/areas. Further, many who wish to be/hold such a position, whose role/duties would include such duties, cannot afford to _and_ live comfortably.
