Sooo underappreciated.... we didn't know what we had in her... The beginning of this joint is pure magic, the tones, the inflection, the control of her voice is of the highest order... Miss her madly...
I will not put any of today's younger singers down, because everyone has some degree of talent. HOWEVER, Ms. Hyman EMBODIED jazz, rhythm&blues, funk, disco, soft rock, and most of all CLASS. Even her whistle had an awesome tone and pitch (i.e. "Living All Alone"). Any opportunity to see live footage of her is an honor since I never had the pleasure of seeing a live performance. Thank you ever so much!!
Granny42able. Amen to that. I truly loved Phyllis, she was a very special lady with a great gift from God and she blessed so many of us with her talent. Phyllis was truly a class act and all that rolled up into one. She inspired many young girls with her voice. The voice of an Angel-gone to soon.
I agree with everything.. except gone too soon. God calls us home when He needs us. And believe me, she's in a better place, we're living a hell on earth.
She was so gifted, she reaches right in and grabsyour soul and never lets go!!I remember her from when I was about 8 or 9,my sister was listening to Old Friend and I just fell in love with her sound.Deep, resonating tones and vibrant, full higher notes, her voice is like vocal chocolate!!!!!!!!!
My mother fell in love with Phyllis Hyman voice and beauty Phyllis Hyman gave my mother a hug and she put a smile on my mother's face I will never forget Nancy Wilson and Phyllis Hyman are the greatest voices of are time.
I remember a late night at Marie Crisis, a Jazz Bar in Manhattan's Greenish Village in early 1980's when Phyllis Hyman showed up with friend singer Angela Bofil after one of her Broadway performances of "Sophisticated Ladies". Together with the musicians on the stage they turned that place into a magical music journey that still embedded in my mind..........Love you Phyllis :-)
Thank God for our Phyllis Hyman what a dear and a sweet heart she was, her sound is the best of all time. Phyllis you are love and remember for all time.
I loved this woman so much! She was so beautiful and extremely talented to me! People just didn't appreciate her talent but I did. R.I.P. Phyllis! I really love and loved you and always will!
I had the opportunity to see PH live # @ a theatre on South Street in Philadelphia, I don't remember year, but never forgot her awesome performance. No one could top her then and now. Mad Love for Phyllis R.I.P. That greatest.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. HYMAN IN MANHATTAN. I WAS WALKING ACROSS 7TH AVE FROM CENTRAL PARK AND I SAW A GUY WEARING HER BLACK JACKET THAT SAID PHYLIS HYMAN, AS SOON AS I DID I REALIZED SHE WAS WALKING WITH HIM. I TALKED WITH HER ALL THE WAY ACROSS 7TH AVE. GOT ACROSS THE STREET AND BEGAN TO FREAK OUT THAT I HAD A CONVERSATION WITH MY IDOL. SHORTLY AFTER THAT I WAS BACK HOME IN SAN DIEGO AND HAD HEARD SHE COMMITED SUICIDE IN MANHATTAN, I WAS AND AM CRUSHED. MY FAVORITE SONG OF HER'S IS " MEET ME ON THE MOON. RIheacen PH.
😮😢 so ❤ heartfelt. We used to go to concerts in the 70s and 80s . I still remember the dress I wore to see her at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion 🎉 Every one was so elegant, but not as elegant as she was on sage, then kicked her shoes off. (size 12😂)💎👑💖🎷🎵❤
Oh you still bring the best magic bullets of all. Thanks for posting. What a great way to move into a Phabulous Phyllis Phryday. The late Daren McGavin; it sounded like he was reading a line from a movie. Seems like Phyllis had a little case of nerves at the beginning, but of course in classic Hyman form, she brought it.
Thank you for posting. I have always loved Phyllis, One year she came to Chicago 4 times and I saw her all four times. I was in awe of her talent and beauty. Miss her much!!!
Classic Phyllis, up close-she had the most velvety skin I had ever seen. The Blue Note is a small Jazz club in New York City, and I went to every one of her shows back in the day.
ANGEL: Now in GOD CHOIR.. Long live our PRINCESS of SOULTRY singers...I MISS YOU and loved you every since I was 14 years (1977) thank you Spike Lee, I'm still "School DAZED" A natural voice of GOD children, She was very CLASSY and BEAUTIFUL........

lowando a impressive collection of good music never falls out of favor...especially if it includes Phyllis Hyman. New things come and go all the time. But a well developed collection is forever.
I met her at my ex girlfriend's birthday party six months before she passed. she sang. no music, just her voice. I had never heard of her, but remember thinking she can sing. she said some things later about nice things happening if you believe in yourself. she said that to a child who was there and hugged her.
OH MY, JUST HEARING HER VOICE BRINGS BACK MEMORIES I THOUGHT BURIED. WHEN YOU HEAR ANY OF HER SONGS, IF YOU EVER WERE IN LOVE, YOU FELT LIKE SHE WAS SINGING TO YOU. SHE EXPRESSED HERSELF THROUGH HER MUSIC. SHE EPITOMIZED THE MEANING "SOULFUL, ENCHANTING, SULTRY BALLADEER". PHYLLIS I MISS YOU, I MISS YOUR MUSIC, I MISS THE WAY YOU GRACED A STAGE, BUT MOST OF ALL I MISS YOU IN THAT SPECIAL PLACE THAT YOU OCCUPIED FOR SO LONG IN MY HEART. I ADMIT THAT WHEN I HEARD THAT YOU HAD LEFT US, I CRIED.
@lowando OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU!! for this clip I have always loved her and her music a very RARE BEAUTY she will always be in my heart she wrote how she felt and sing with that feeling a one of a kind SHE is missed.
Phyllis had such a regal quality about her.It is so terribly sad that she isn't here to bless us with that beautiful voice and face.Someone should have done a biopic about "Goddess of Love"
@Tjmama5 I sure what they say about her going off is true, it must have been behind closed doors cause in interviews and performances she seems to get her point across in the coolest, subtle way. Remember the Ebony/Jet interview where they kept interrupting. LOL.
@akaziaj: i thought i was trippin the 1st time but the 2nd time i knew it wasnt me...homeboy was off a bit but phyllis looked at him a couple times like "get dis rite man!" lol and kept on gettin it like the consummate performer she was
PHYLLIS, THERE NEVER WAS, AND THERE WILL NEVER BE A MORE GORGEOUS, MORE BEAUTIFUL FEMALE SINGER IN MY LIFETIME. HER EARLY DEMISE, NOT ONLY TOOK AWAY ONE OF THE MOST GIFTED, TALENTED PERFORMERS TO EVER GRACE A STAGE, BUT BROKE MY HEART. HER MUSIC HAD A UNIQUE WAY OF TOUCHING YOUR SOUL, AND REMINDING US OF THE DARK SIDE OF LOVE. HER MUSIC WAS BOTH INSPIRATIONAL AND AT THE SAME TIME TRAGIC. DESPITE HER UNTIMELY DEATH, SHE LEFT WITH US, A COLLECTION OF SONGS THAT WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US FOR ETERNITY.
SHE was an excellent jazz vocalist.
