The Mirror "I Am There Inside" Comparison

  • A comparison video of different Phantoms singing the lines, "Look at yourself in the mirror - I am there inside!" This is absolutely one of my favorite moments in the Phantom of the Opera, and I get chills every time I hear this.
    Apologies if I don't have your Phantom here (I probably don't know him or I don't have any audio of him) or if I got a photo wrong (I don't recognize everyone by face.)
    I don't own anything. All rights go to the respectful owners.

    Honestly, Michael Crawford had the best build up imo. He has a subtleness that draws you in, and the crescendo really nails it. Most others rely on vibrato to sell it, where he doesn't really need it to sell it, but he adds it towards the end of the note which I appreciate more than constant vibrato

    Am I wrong for liking Gerard's? There's just something to the way he hits "I am there inside!" that gives me chills every time, it's just so deep and... hollow? I think that's how I'd describe it, very resonant. I seem to gravitate more towards the deeper, older sounding Phantoms and less toward the nasally or younger sounding ones same goes for the ones where they emphasize "there", it just takes away from the fluidity of the lyric. I also like the ones where the organ plays on "I am there inside", it's a very nice touch.

    I've been doing my darnest to figure out who played the Phantom the first time I got to see the play live, it was in San Francisco, I want to say I the mid to lateish 90's, like 96-98, whoever performed the phantom that day was unspeakably the best singer I have ever heard and is one of the many reasons I pursued vocals and kept my deep desire to one day fill that mask more than any dream of performing on stage

    My main problem with Gerard Butler is the fact that he probably had numerous takes to try and get that note. He will also have his vocals smoothed over to ensure it was film worthy. Like props to him for actually singing. But he cannot even begin to be compared to people like Ramin and Colm and JOJ, because he simply would not be in their league if they had a 'sing off'. For me Ramin is my favourite due to the emotional aspect of his performance

    • @IdkIdk-vi5qb
      @IdkIdk-vi5qb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you are just assuming things. and the musical phantoms also went through a lot of training. every phantom to ever existed has. what do you think rehearsals are for? i have been in many musicals and for every single one i had to rehearse a lot. dont make too many assumptions.

    • @Eve.33.H
      @Eve.33.H 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Idk Idk
      I am well aware that there are rehearsals, my point, as I said above is that this is talking about the best vocal and I am saying that GB isn’t the best because of the fact that he had a team if people making his singing ‘film worthy’. He isn’t a bad singer I’ve never said that but again, in terms of a comparison he cannot begin to compare to Ramin or JOJ because they are the best and have TRAINED to be the best compare it to GB who had a recording studio and a team who worked to smooth out his vocals and ensure that they sounded the best it could.

    Michael Crawford is always the best! His higher voice has so much ring and he sings so easily compared to the others. He's also got that creep factor that's simply a must! I like the others, but technique-wise he's 100% the best, and he seems to be the only phantom that doesn't have that darker, boomier lower end

      Robert Casamassa literally one of the weakest voices in this whole compilation... there were like 5 other voices with (WAY) more power AND also had a proper vibrato and technique. Butler sounds so so soooooo undeveloped in his voice.

    • @dargelxd
      @dargelxd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@brandonbenitez9746 I know this comment is from a year ago, but idc...
      I completely agree with you when it comes to Gerard's voice, however, there are some people who like that "untrained, raw" voice that he has...
      Saying that the raw less trained vocals makes him sound more emotional...
      I don't really agree with this pov, but it's a pov many people have, so I figured I'd at least bring it up...

    • @inlonging
      @inlonging 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dargelxd you’re right, but the fact he stands out as one of the only untrained singers isn’t a selling point for most of us 😅 The worst part is due to the movie so many people get exposed and think that’s how it’s supposed to sound, when videos like this show it’s supposed to be singers. How in the world could the character train Christine to be such an excellent singer and love music so much and then sing like that? It’s too out of character.

    Earl Carpenter, Colm Wilkonson, John Owen-Jones, and Ramin Karimloo are all AMAZING in their roles in Les Miserables
    Ramin Karimloo immediately became one of my favorite singers in ANY musical when he preformed the role of Enjolras in the Les Mis 25th Anniversary and he does an AMAZING job as the phantom. He has such a powerful voice that I will always love
    Earl Carpenter became my favorite bishop when he sang in the Les Mis 25th Anniversary at the O2 Center along with Ramin... He then became my second favorite Javert when he sang for the 25th Anniversary with John Owen-Jones and he is a pretty good phantom as well
    Colm Wilkonson was and always will be my favorite Jean ValJean.. and he was and always will be the original Jean ValJean
    However if I’m honest to me he didn’t fit the role of the Phantom as well as he did ValJean
    John Owen-Jones where do I even begin.. he is an amazing singer and he is my second favorite ValJean.. my mom who has never found anyone who has played ValJean that she liked or had something to point out ( other than Colm ) but when she heard John she had nothing bad to say and neither do I.. personally he could fit the role of Phantom and Javert.. and I would of loved to see him preform
    Norm Lewis was MY favorite Javert... he had the look of the role and the voice.. he seems to play a pretty good phantom however out of all these men who I have recognized to play parts in Les Mis.. if I could see any of them I would want to see Ramin
    These are all my personal opinions and I would of LOVED to see all 5 of these men as the Phantom or even as the roles they played in Les Mis
