I lost my best friend in December. He was my little brother. He was Down Syndrome and we'd been joined at the hip for 56 years. This was always my song for him. He loved to play it for me when he played records. I miss him terribly.
If there was a most beautiful mans eyes of all time contest, then ND must surely be the outright winner. Does anyone agree with me? Please vote with a thumbs up if you do.
I'm 60 and my brother is 57 with Crones Disease, and has had about 16 or more surgeries removing his intestines, as long as he lives, I will make sure his bills are all paid ,as he can't work . He's no burden to me, He's my brother. Our parents are gone and he's all I have left of my family here in Ohio. If I have a dollar , then he has 50 cents. This song brings me to tears .I Love You brother........
This song is absolutely perfect. Neil sings it so well that I feel in another world. I lie on my bed with my head on my pillow watching the dream of my life with eyes that brighten up my life thinking of my wonderful brother who gives me so much and cares deeply for me. I am truly blessed as I think of all the things that he has done for me over the years. Greg is the only one left in my family now. I can’t thank TH-cam enough for making me so happy.
I could never sing this song without crying like a baby. Neil Diamond sings it with such confidence and emotional rawness. He is a consumate professional.
It's based upon an actual story, what I understood. About a poor African-American kid who carried his disabled brother to school every day. Upon asked why he did this, he answered: he ain't heavy he's my brother. Always makes you cry, don't it? It does me.
50 years ago, this year, I carried my best friend from the spot where he died to the LZ when the Crew Chief asked me if I needed help. I remembered some years before seeing a poster about Boys Town and so I answered:" No thank you, he ain't heavy, he's my brother." Just think about him every day.
2010 my uncle Lonnie Dimas Jr. Died at the age of 69. He was in the hospital, and he had told me, " he was ready to go. I told him ,it was ok." In the car, this song, "He ant heavy, he's my brother." Started playing, l started crying. Thinking of Jr. I'd heard this song a thousand times but today it had a personal feeling, to me. I didn't go home for 6 hrs. That's when l finely stopped crying. Thanks for all the fine music you've given to all of us. God bless you for sharing your God given talents w/the world & ME..
Wow that’s incredible must have been tough carrying your friend it’s good you were there for him though because although his body was dead his spirit was looking down and watching you I can’t imagine how tough that was

THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF MY FAVORITE NEIL SONGS. my brother was a huge neil diamond fan, so much that when my he passed away at a young age of 54 every song at the funeral was neil diamond. his 2 sons even did the song i am i said,as a tribute to there dad,my brother. almost 2 years have gone by and now i am finaly able to listen to neil again. thank you for posting this.
I've heard many different versions of this song by many different artists. But, I just can't find any that touches me as Neil's does. His timing, heart cry sound in his voice, and the fact that once he sings something, to me, it is finished! I love this version and Neil Diamond. I created an amazing design inspired by this song and copied it for framing to give an old veteren friend of mine. He cried! Thanks Neil!
@@BillSmith-rx9rm i heard their version, and for many years it was the only version. but i can appreciate this one for what it is. he puts his own passion into it.... his voice is perfect for ballads so he might as well sing them.
I lost one of my brothers this morning. I am heartbroken that he's gone and I will miss him so much. Im struggling with my feelings about being glad he isn't suffering anymore. I love you brother.
So sorry for your loss. I hope your anguish is easing somewhat, although I totally understand if not. As they say, "Grief is the price... of love." The more we loved, the more we grieve.
I have heard Neil Diamond virtually all my life. And he literally lives breathes feels each song he has sung! He has that rare raw yet soft tonal quality that can never be copied. OK yes I ama die hard fan and I love his voice! Sheer magic!
What a song and what a man. This song is timeless, especially those who have disabled or sick siblings and those who have suffered loss of their love ones.

Thank you for your kind words. Still hoping and praying that I will one day find my brother. He disappeared in 1971 and had only been out of the Marine Corp for almost a year. I will never give up trying to find out what happen to him. Thanks again for the kind words, it helps to know that there are people out there that care. We as humans should care about each other, that is my prayer..
This song has always been so special for me, especially sung by Neil Diamond. I was 13 when I lost my brother in a traffic accident. Now I’m 56, and he still travels with me. Because “no burden is he to bear, we’ll get there, for I know, he ain’t heavy, he’s my brother”..... that sentence always relates to me so much.
When Neil Diamond went on tour in 2001, he added this song to the concert in tribute to our troops, firemen, police officers, teachers...etc. His version, is imo, the best. It has feeling, and you can feel it.
I played this at my brothers funeral, he was my best friend my strength my joy my all. He gave me a ring and told me that if the time came to sell it to do so but i said i never would. But this year 2012 i had to do the unthinkable and sell the ring. But i no how he felt about material items but it still hurts but we were hungry. I love u so much Sam and the pain of loosing u will never get easy. So much that we did together and this song will always bring me closer to u.
I lost my baby brother a few hours ago. Damn it.!!!!! I love you Joel.. fly high and don't look back!!! I'll be standing on a mountain shouting a cold and broken hallelujah.. Leonard Cohen
I saw him live when I was 15 at our local Elk’s Hall so close I could touch him. He sounds exactly the same in person. What an incredible talent. At 14 I knew I was watching history.
Neil Diamond has more depth and sincerity in interpreting any song....Here he shows justice plus the X Factor of his good looks that is always pleasing up to this point of time.....I love you Neil.....you're such a wonderful guy....
What a captivating performer....no auto-tune, no melodyne, no synths, no loops.....it isn't going to get much better than this. Hope the Today show can get him out to the plaza again this year.
Im 700 this song came out in popularity during the civil rights movement. My uncle arranged its music for his entire marching band of the university of Minnesota to play on the football field at halftime. We always became somber when its message resounding. Actually it refers to the brotherhood of all mankind. Of course it was wartime then, soldiers were carrying their injured fellow soldiers drafted with them in Viet Nam. The word "brother" penetrates in our hearts reaching across race boundaries & differences. Not necessarily a sibling.
Think about it Luclys. He ain't heavy, he's in heaven now, and will LIFT you up to be with him when it is that certain time in the future. You, my dear, will now have to do the heavy lifting, of life, to do the things he did not accomplish in his time here. When your work is done, he will ask God to take you to be with him. Your friends will help you. Your brothers' spirit will help you even more. Trust your spirit and love.
The essence of the song, whoever sings it trancends all that is for the human race to survive. Selfishness, greed. hatred towards whoever that brother is leads to destruction.
God bless you. I lost one of my brothers a few months ago and I was with him like you are with your brother. He was no burden to me. He was a blessing to have. I was like his mother despite the fact I am younger than he was. I miss him so much. Keep helping him. I admire people like you !!! God bless you !!!
Always been my favourite version of this beautiful song. Lately I can't think of a better song for Kevin Sinfield carrying Rob Burrow over the finishing line of the Leeds Marathon. I can't even type this without tears in my eyes.😢
Only Neil's version leaves me in tears! The Hollies are more uplifting whereas Neil slays me emotionally. I imagine him comforting a suffering soul of beauty.
I'm sorry for your loss. I too lost my brother. Unless you've lost a sibling you cannot imagine the grief. they came from the same place you did and your made of the same stuff. no one is closer to you. May both our brothers rest in peace with the knowledge of how much they are loved
My brother passed away 10 years ago this coming May, and he was heavy (weight wise) but there is nothing he wouldn't have done for me, or anyone, he had the biggest heart of anyone, save for maybe my father that I have ever known. I am sorry for the loss of your brother.
wheeling your wheelchair you werent heavy, you were my brother. Love you and miss you bro. Left us 13/10/11 after loosing the battle with cancer. Love you always, Fiona.xxxxx
"He Ain't Heavy" was composed by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. It was introduced to the Hollies in the summer of 1969 while residing in London and the record was released on September 1, 1969. featuring the piano talents of Elton John, and with lead singer Allan Clarke providing a heartfelt rendition of the lyrics. The US release was 3 months later - December 1, 1969... But what the hell... Neil does a wonderful interpretation.
I agree, you guys! A stunner, I know I am 30 years younger than him, I still had/have a crush on him, and would date him. Even still today he is quite beautiful, but but also in a more respectable way. Gotta respect Mr. Diamond. He is a legend!!!
So sorry to hear about the loss of your brothers. David and I were also most like twins, only 16 months apart. We did everything together and I never had much time to know him as an adult. He was 23 years old when he disappeared and had only been out of the Marines for approx. 1 year. Thank you for sending the note to me and may God bless you and your family also. Thanks for caring....
On this day in 1917 {December 12th} Father Edeward J. Flanagan opened Boys Town in a run-down Victorian mansion in downtown Omaha, Nebraska. It was his belief that every child could be a productive citizen if given love, a home, an education, and a trade... Fifty three years and two days later on December 14th, 1969, Neil Diamond's covered version of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother*" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #68; and six weeks later on December 13th, 1970 it peaked at #20 {for 2 weeks} and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100... * In 1943, Boys Town adopted as its image and logo a picture of a boy carrying a younger boy on his back, with the caption "He ain't heavy, Father, he's my brother"...
His exprexion on his face, and does eys, whene he sings this song !!! You feel this song , in combination with his Amazing voice !!!!! Mister Neil Daimond !!!!!!!
The Hollies OWN this song!! Allan Clarke sings it with such emotion and no other group could ever match the gorgeous Hollies harmonies! HOLLIES FOREVER!!
The first concert my brother Leo and I ever went to and this song was special to the both of us because we lost our brother to a intoxicated person while he was on leave from the military Police army sadly this week my brother Leo past away from stage 4 cancer and holding his hand thru it all this song is being played at his funeral in my eulogy. He was a police officer, fireman and then went on to become a machinist...The most wonderful soul and spirit always helping people always tell your loved ones you love them and stand beside them when god calls them home..Love you Leo with all my heart
This man has the most beautiful voice in the world!!!!Not even Frank Sinatra. the sweetest, more honey like,I love you Neil Diamond forever, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I was 12 in 1972 when my brother and I were in a WALKATHON for (the boys home) . I became tired after 16 miles of heat and fatigue. My brother put me on his back and when people asked if he was tired he'd say "He's not heavy he's my brother". Yesterday I carried my brother's coffin to his final resting point as the military buggle played. Someone asked me if I was tired from carrying him and I said "he's not heavy he's my brother".
I lost my brother 4 yrs ago to diabetis, He was heavy and he is still my brother. We both love neil and my daughter did a video of him io this song. I know he is in heaven still listening to Neil. Love you Bro. Love you Neil.
Got to be one of the GREATEST singer/song writers of all time. And the music from that time period was the best. Thank God for youtube where I can still find it.
Saw this giant on stage last year in Munich, he hasnt lost anything of his voice! We had a blast in the audience, thousands went home in deep satisfaction. In this song he is not half the voice of The Hollies but who cares. ;)
whity72 we bought tickets as a birthday present for my mum who seen him the first time he came out in the mid 70's thinking it would be his last tour..unfortunately he announced due to health he wasnt able to do the tour...my mum passed on her live neil to me and have found it so sad to see time catch up with another legend a little too soon..
Recording made at the BBC studio with audience, much nicer environment to sing with feelings, close to your people, rather than a hall with 30 or 40,000 spectators, miles away, just a field of heads! I was there, at the studio. I remember those deep beautiful eyes, telling us a story in that song. At every stage of his life, Neil had a strong, but kind and gentle personality. That is what came through. His children are lucky to have Neil as their dad. Hope life will always treat you well. We are thinking of you. 😉
Our parents are deceased and I'm living with my brother who has a terrible case of Bipolar Disorder which makes him abusive and cruel sometimes. . I'll tell you....HE'S HEAVY....but he's still my brother and I'm going to continue carrying his load and mine. Hopefully he'll go to treatment soon. This song was one of the best things that came out of the 60's.
My brother is in intensive care and in coma as I listen to this song, a victim of a car accident. I only wish I would of have been loser to him, but Lord if he pulls through this, never will he be heavy to me again
Kathleen Dodd How nice of you to reply. I'm so happy to say that our prayers were answered and he is on his way to a miraculous recovery. There is no weight whatsoever on him, he ain't heavy HE'S MY BROTHER. LOL
I am glad your brother recovered. Now try to make up for lost time. It is your chance to be the brother you should be. May GOD bless you both and your relationship.
I've had a picture with the same title hanging on my wall for over 60 years. My brother's funeral in beginning in a few minutes. Every time I see the picture or hear this song I think about him and the love I have for him.
There is a strong rumour that he is back in the studio recording a new album to be followed by a limited tour. Welcome back legend. My middle finger to parkinsons
On this day in 1970 {November 1st} "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by Neil Diamond entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #68; and six weeks later on December 13th, 1970 it peaked at #20 {for 2 weeks} and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #4 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... In the calendar year of 1970 Mr. Diamond had six other records make the Top 100; "Shilo {#24}, "Until It's Time for You to Go" {#53}, "Soolaimon" {#30}, "Solitary Man" {#21}, "Cracklin' Rosie" {#1}, and "Do It" {#36}... Earlier in 1970 on March 15th the Hollies peaked at #7 with their version of the song; in the U.K. it reached #3, but when re-released eighteen years later it peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} on September 24th, 1988...

Because “no burden is he to bear, we’ll get there, for I know, he ain’t heavy, he’s my brother”..... that sentence always relates to me so much.
What a voice, unique.
Noone sings like this amazing, beautiful man
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Vesna💐💐
So sorry for your loss. I know it's been years since you posted this, but your post moved me.
Simplemente fabulosa interpretación. Gracias Neil. Saludos desde Mexico.
The way he sings this song really shows how strong and rich his voice is.
My brother David Wayne Waggoner has been missing for 40 years and when I hear this song I think of him. I love you David wherever you are.
I saw him live when I was 15 at our local Elk’s Hall so close I could touch him. He sounds exactly the same in person. What an incredible talent. At 14 I knew I was watching history.
Surely ,one of d most beautiful human being on earth .....diamond forever.
Eu assisto todos os dias, por muitas horas Amo essa canção, amo essa voz, esses olhos, esse artista ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Played this song at my brother’s funeral. This is exactly how I feel about him. Miss him very much.
Not necessarily a sibling.
his face is so interesting to watch during this just the feelings and emootions that run across it
Think about it Luclys.
He sings with such feeling. So glad I got to see him before he stopped travelling for concerts.
I can't even type this without tears in my eyes.😢
great song for my 3 beloved brothers...
thanks for being there always ...
God bless
Only Neil's version leaves me in tears! The Hollies are more uplifting whereas Neil slays me emotionally. I imagine him comforting a suffering soul of beauty.
It is what Jesus taught us to do and he modeled it for us.
Neil Diamond made this song and the songwriters some REAL money. Come on, give the guy credit he deserves
Neil Diamond is a wonderful singer . God bless Neil always !!!!
13 years later I see your comment and am very sorry for your loss!
wheeling your wheelchair you werent heavy, you were my brother.
Diamond. He is a legend!!!
what a man I can't stop saying this he's soooo beautiful....
His eyes.... his eyes are knocking me down.. omg.. And his voice.. wauw.. just wauw for all.. Neil is amazing !! :D And still is :)
Wonderful version of this great great song in my personal opinion.
OMG! I want to see him in concert again...amazing man.
My Brother took his life at 17 and this song makes me wish he was here so I could carry his pain and help him 😢
I lost my brother 4 yrs ago to diabetis, He was heavy and he is still my brother. We both love neil and my daughter did a video of him io this song. I know he is in heaven still listening to Neil. Love you Bro. Love you Neil.
This voice, this eyes! Love this song - doesn´t matter who wrote it- it´s great from Neil!
Your brother is blessed to have you and you in turn are blessed to have him....
Thank you so much for sharing. Love him so much forever, forever and ever.!!!
I will always love you. My English teacher played you for me. It was the first music I ever heard:)
That's what they do. They show you something to move your heart.
Got to be one of the GREATEST singer/song writers of all time. And the music from that time period was the best. Thank God for youtube where I can still find it.
I felt like some music by Neil Diamond today. That's the simple truth of the matter.
AHHHH THE YODELS AND VOICE CRACKS MAKE ME GO💞💕💗💘💓💖💝
Saw this giant on stage last year in Munich, he hasnt lost anything of his voice! We had a blast in the audience, thousands went home in deep satisfaction. In this song he is not half the voice of The Hollies but who cares. ;)
n
whity72 we bought tickets as a birthday present for my mum who seen him the first time he came out in the mid 70's thinking it would be his last tour..unfortunately he announced due to health he wasnt able to do the tour...my mum passed on her live neil to me and have found it so sad to see time catch up with another legend a little too soon..
This song is what life is about
He ain't heavy. He's my Brother!!! Thank You for sharing.
Absolute genius. Thank you Neil.
Jorge Mario Rodas Thx Jorge your comment is appreciated
So happy prayers were answered. Hope you are still enjoying your 2nd chance together.
I've had a picture with the same title hanging on my wall for over 60 years. My brother's funeral in beginning in a few minutes. Every time I see the picture or hear this song I think about him and the love I have for him.
Another timeless piece !
I miss my brother, too. He went to heaven Oct 13, 2003. RIP, dear Randy!
There is a strong rumour that he is back in the studio recording a new album to be followed by a limited tour. Welcome back legend. My middle finger to parkinsons
