  • The Tracker 44 is a 5 shot .44 Magnum revolver with a compact frame. It has some good features for a wheelie in it's price range but how does it hold up at the Buffalo Range?

Many years ago, a friend of mine bought one of the factory custom jobs Tracker .44 mag with an 8.5' barrel. It was the most accurate revolvers he and I ever shot. There must have been a lot of hand fitting because the tolerances were very tight.

The hang-up is the transfer bar hitting the firing pin base. I polished mine and it went away. To check, point it down and dry fire. You will find that it happens much more often.

    • @strixt

Is that just an issue during DA then?

    • @manderson7173

@@strixt the transfer bar comes into play in both DA and SA

    • @strixt
      @strixt 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@manderson7173 Right but the transfer bar, at least on my Henry, is right alongside the hammer so unless they are built slightly different (which is possible, my Henry is the only transfer bar I own) the bar shouldn't even be close to the firing pin in SA. The question I was actually getting at was essentially "is it a different style where the bar rides below the pin even with the hammer back?"

    • @garyK.45ACP
      @garyK.45ACP 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have no experience with Taurus revolvers. That said. I DO have other guns with transfer bar safeties and the theory is nothing new.
The transfer bar should NOT be in a position between the hammer and firing pin unless the trigger is held to the rear. In that case, the transfer bar would not hang up on anything during cylinder rotation.
For example, on my Colt Trooper MKIII, the transfer bar stays below the firing pin until I pull the trigger. If I manually cock the revolver and hold the hammer while I pull the trigger, the _trigger pull_ lifts the transfer bar to its position behind the firing pin. If I release the trigger at any point, the transfer bar again drops below the firing pin and the hammer would land on the revolver frame. In DA mode, the transfer bar does not rise up until the very last part of the trigger pull, just before the hammer releases.
I no longer have any Ruger revolvers, but the 3 single six revolvers I bought for my sons operated the same.
For a transfer bar to function as a safety it CAN NOT be in position until the trigger is pulled. As such it should have no interference with cylinder rotation.

I have a Heritage Rough Rider SAA 45Colt that from the first day, there was a point, occasionally, where it seemed to hang up when cocking the hammer. It wouldn’t do it with the muzzle pointing up. I completely disassembled the handgun and it seemed the casting was really rough where the hand could occasionally drag on casting burs. I diamond filed the space walls and opening and that helped.

I bought 1 of these in natural stainless steel about 4-5yrs ago for my wife as bear protection. No, it isn't nearly as nice as my S&W Model 629-1 BUT it was less than 1/2 the cost, shoots very well and hasn't had a single issue since it was purchased. Even with the porting this is a very light weight revolver and full power 44 mag ammo is going to kick. However, for my wife a 44 Special loaded with a 255 gr hard cast SWC at 1100fps is plenty good for defense against black bears and recoil is very manageable with the big soft pachmayr grips I put on for her. This is a very small frame for a 44 Magnum so I wouldn't shoot thousands of round of full power bear loads through it as I don't know that the little frame could handle thousands of them and the person doing the shootings hands would be a bit tenderized by doing it.

Had one just like that years ago. I had just picked it up and then went to a shoot by a local gun forum. Using the Tracker right out of the box with the same 240 Winchester ammo I won the 50 ft accuracy match. This was slow fire with any handgun. I was competing against 22lr and up. The tightest 5 shot group won.
This revolver was the softest shooting 4 inch that I ever had. The porting and grip really works.
I mostly shot the Keith and Skeeter 44 Special loads in this revolver. The Keith load went 975 fps and the skeeter load went 850 fps.
Great video. Thanks for making it.

I have one of the newer models with the other grip style. I replaced the front sight with a green fiberoptic style sight for a smith model . Only slight moderate modification to the sight to fit the revolver. Shoots pretty well for the cost . Only got it after you reviewed the Taurus bigger model and it seemed the quality. Had gotten better. Decent one for the money . I got mine i think it was around 450ish

Buffalo, I have had that same hiccup in the trigger pull. What I found was the casings were backing out slightly after each shot, going far enough back after some shots to start binding as the cylinder turns. Making sure there was no lubricant in the shell holes was what fixed it. Maybe there was some lubricant from the factory? Some brake cleaner on a qtip to get any grease out of the cylinder holes made it so the cases weren't backing out anymore.

Comfortable grip, low recoil, always functions smoothly and the rear sight ( fully adjustable ) has never shot loose or lost adjustment ! That hang up/lock up you mentioned happened to me on my Taurus M44. It's the plunger spring. They get something like a crease in them and then the spring gets like a kink in it. I called Taurus and they sent me a new spring for free. It came fast.
Look. I'm pretty sure that kink in the spring came from me riding the hammer and riding the trigger.

The tracker .357 has that lock up feel in the trigger to. There's about a fat 1/32 to 1/16 of meat on the trigger that catches on the sear ever so slightly and in some case does catch and cause lock up. On mine i took 320 grit diamond stone and knocked it down a good bit then finished it off with 1000-2500 grit sand paper. That fixed the issue in there. I also polished all the mating surfaces on the side of the trigger and the hammer to help with the "catchy" feel. Thing runs smooth as silk now.

Buffalo. Always a good video. Great shooting with that relative short barrel .44 Mag. A while back I bought a used Taurus model 44 (not Tracker) with an 8.25" barrel but with the porting is actually a ~7" barrel. My Taurus is a very heavy 6-round gun that is not too bad to shoot. Thanks for sharing I really enjoy your videos. Merry Christmas and take care.

Make it a true 3 OR 4" barrel (no expansion chambers or porting), drop about ten ounces off the overall empty weight, add a sixth round, and chamber it in .44Spl or even .45 Colt's and I'd carry it every day! Failing that, despite my appreciation of Taurus handguns, I'll have to stick with Charter Arms for my concealed carry Big Bore revolvers. And yes, I know, those would be five shot revolvers too. Great video as usual!

I’ve been looking at some lighter weight 44 revolvers. They definitely are more difficult to shoot with hotter loads but the trade off is being able to carry them all day in the woods while also carrying other gear and a rifle. The S&W or even bigger Taurus revolvers weighing 50 oz or so are nice to shoot but I don’t want to lug them around. I was looking at the Tracker as an inexpensive option and the S&W 329pd as a more expensive option but likely much better built…also quite a bit lighter and with better sights.

I got off gunbroker a Taurus 6 shot stainless steel revolver with a 4" ported barrel. The recoil is pretty reasonable, the gun isn't a lightweight model, the balance is pretty good.

Those original Gripper grips are the BEST if you shoot magnums in this gun. I've had one for 20 years now and tried wood grips once, just once. Magnum loads beat my hand so bad. Swapped back to the rubber grips pronto.

I bought a 692 in .357/9mm and it was supposed to come with the original Ribber grips, but i was chagrined to see it show up in a set of Hogue knockoffs that Taurus seems to be moving too. I was so disappointed. But then I found a set of Ribber grips on their website for $10 so I finally got it the way I wanted it. Bought an extra set of grips just in case...

Had the blued version, it shot so high that the sights were useless. I pulled off the irons, and put on a red dot, having to max out the elevation to get on paper at 20 yards.
The gun needed to go back to Taurus twice for timing issues also, the gun would not center the cylinder. On the third repair, they got it fixed and I sold the damn thing.

My model 500 S&W has a 6.5 inch ported barrel with an expansion chamber so it is the same setup. So probably only a 5 inch barrel in actual size. No longer made so mine is a keeper. And it is a semi-lug barrel profile.

The first rounds I shot out of my .44 were those 305 grain buffalo I hurt a lot of friends with those and got myself banned from bringing it around several family shoot outs. I do like the gun but an issue I’ve seen them have is the cylinder will hang after a few rounds. It seems like it shaves a hair off of each round as it’s fired.

This gun has some decent every day carry characteristics for the woods. Being intelligent with your ammo choices is gonna make or break your relationship with this gun. This little piece is not a plug and play. It requires some effort to use to full satisfaction. But what big bore hand gun doesn't?

For what it's worth, I own a taurus 627 tracker (.357 7 shot) and in the year I've had it so far I've put well over 1500 full power rounds through it without a single issue. And it shows no signs of quitting any time soon. I also have a friend with one of their raging hunter models in .44, and his has at least twice the round count mine does and still shoots as well as the day it was new. They make excellent target shooters, are very accurate, and I swear they're the softest recoiling magnum revolvers I've ever experienced.

I've heard some horror stories, so I know there are some bad ones out there, but I am going to say that solely based on the experiences I've had with Taurus revolvers they have performed very good. The one in this video is the only one I've had a problem with and I am not sure if it is a real problem or not (the occasional hitch in the action). I own a 460 Raging hunter and it's been excellent. One of the most accurate revolvers I've shot on this channel was a 627 Tracker (357 magnum). Admittedly my experience with Taurus revolvers is limited so take that with a grain of salt.
