    I love to see you ripping around with these older motors. It's fantastic that you have become so knowledgeable about them too. It's awesome to see how you have tuned and fixed them. Good job

      I really enjoy these motors. The 18 OMCs are awesome. I enjoy all kinds of motors, but most of.the others are more of a novelty. When I want to run a motor and get more serious with my boating, I prefer OMCs, especially the 22c.i. ones. I very much like the RD/Big Twin series as well. They definitely use more fuel than the 18s though. I can get a lot of boating enjoyment out of an 18 on most of my boats and use half the fuel of the larger motors. Thanks for watching!

      It does run nicely. I enjoy running this motor. It still impresses me how well it turned out after bringing it back from the dead. It would be nice to give it a full rebuild of the powerhead, but hard to justify as long as it runs this well. Having a pair of good strong ones on this boat as twins would be super cool, though. Thanks for watching!

    OMC 18's: "The Old Reliables" Thanks for another video, Ben.

      Yes, I love these 18s. I can put one together out of parts and build a trust in it pretty quickly. Not a lot of other motors do I trust as much as one of these. Thanks for watching!

    Nice run again Ben. That one sounds good and runs pretty darn good too! We’re finally getting some much needed rain here! Still way short of what we need but grateful for the light steady rain over the last 3 hours! Yes that one performs pretty well! Mark in Iowa.

      Thank you. This motor turned out very well considering its condition when I got it. I paid $25 for this motor as a parts donor and ended up getting the powerhead unstuck and cleaned up it turned out to be a favorite runner.
      We have been getting some much needed rain as well. I even got wet on a boat ride today from a pop up storm. Thanks for watching, Mark!

    Just got one of these motors for free, just have got it running but I’m going to have replace the impeller. I’ve got a 14ft Jon boat I plan on putting it on hopefully it will push it good, nice video

      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว

      Congratulations on your new motor. It should push your 14ft Jon boat very well. These are strong runners. Thanks for watching!

      The thing turned out amazingly considering where I started with it. It's not as strong as the other one, but it still holds its own and runs very nicely. Thanks for watching!

    Why switch from the quick-rise to the universal magneto? Is the quick-rise as possibly as troublesome as Mercury’s phase maker ignition?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, there are a couple reasons to make this change.
      #1) It keeps the parts common with the majority of the motors in my collection that are regular runners.
      #2) The Low-Tension magneto tends to be considerably more finicky about points timing and things becoming worn in the magneto.
      #3) I don't care for the low-tension magneto simply because there are more parts to it for no real gains. I do not see ANY advantage to that system. The previous system was very reliable and very simple. The low-tension added parts and complexity and I can find no reason for it at all.
      I will save my good low-tension parts to revive the 74-76 9.9/15s that cannot be fitted with the earlier system and are more expensive to fit with the later CD ignition amd retrofit these 22c.i. motors with the universal magneto.
      The low-tension system, while seemingly unnecessary to me, is still superior to the Mercury phase-maker. Those seem to either work or not work. I have never thrown enough money into one to completely rebuild it. I have replaced a few coils on them, but if they need more than that the parts are very pricey. Thanks for watching!

    Hey Jonnyrude- I've got a 73' J25- Trying to figure why will not WOT- so I'm going back under flywheel to re-check points/conds-
    It's got the SET mark which I used last time(recently)- do you recommend getting the pointer tool for timing(I don't have) or do you
    trust the SET mark?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sure whynit won't got WOT. Are you getting full travel out of the magneto plate? The neutral position throttle limiter can sometimes catch on the magneto plate even when it is in forward gear if things are a little put of whack. Check that first.
      As far as setting the points, by far the best way is to use the timing tool. Richardsoutboardtools.com has the tools and Richard is a great guy. The low-tension magneto is very particular about having the points set just right and the way to do it right is with the tool. If the magneto parts are worn, even the tool may not get it just right because there is a little too much movement in the system. Thanks for watching!

    Nice Acceleration.

      The haze is smoke from wildfires in Canada. The fires in Quebec are sending lots of smoke our way.
      This motor does run nice and strong. It is hard to believe how well this one came back to life considering its condition when I got it. Thanks for watching!
