As a new player to DCS (and loving it btw), could you tell me why you use labels? You seem incredibly experienced with this. All the "elitists" tell me "labels are for noobs, turn them off" but I too use them. I just can't pixel hunt very well, or ID plane types in a giant fur ball, so they help. But now I'm curious why you, an experienced player, uses them. Same reasons as me?
Sure, I have a degenerating visual disability that critically affects both my eyes.
This condition renders me legally blind without the usage of specialized hard plastic contacts. The contacts while allowing me to see, do not present me with perfect vision (less than 50% in one eye and around 75% in the other as of my most recent scans).
I do what I can to minimize my usage of labels where they are not needed but the reality is they are there as an aid for people who either want a more relaxed experience or who need the assistance due to various physical limitations.
Play how you want, if anyone tells you to turn them off they are elitist try hard pricks and you should point that out to them. The important part is YOU are enjoying yourself, anyone telling you to play how they want should be told clearly and loudly to fuck off.

Oh, yes, I get those same people calling me a noob (Among other things) for using markers as well. It's refreshing to actually have someone ask me why rather than just tell me I shouldn't because of how it ruins their experience of watching my videos. Thank you.

But your reasons are clear, and make perfect sense. Do whatever you gotta do to get the most out of your sim. These things aren't cheap, so enjoy it the best way you know how to. @GunnDawg lol, you'll actually find comments in this very video related to labels and markers. It's pretty much a standard thing for every video I have ever uploaded on DCS where

"Do whatever you gotta do to get the most out of your sim" - Exactly, I mean look at it this way, If using the markers was not intended for times when heya re wanted or needed why did the developers include markers as an option at all?
There is a strong run of elitism in flight simming, particularly combat flight simming that has a very "my way or the highway" attitude, Don't let them get to you and don't make the mistake of thinking it's the majority, it's a very loud and arrogant minority. What an intense mission
Hey, at the start you did exactly what I've been trying for days. How do you keep the EW on the left DDI when you click the A/A mode? Mine always reverts the left ddi to the weapons systems?
You killed 4 enemy aircraft. I'd say there is really no room for the commanding officer to chew you out about anything. :)
How did you insta lock the SU after firing on the mig then centering on the SU ?
I can do that in the f-14 but for the life of me can't figure out how to do that in the f-18......
I am constantly down trying to find them on radar yet they under 10k so its so slow to slew the TDC etc..............
Id like to bind a key to "lock target in front of me" for lack of better words.....
I use full sim settings btw so if you on game avionics then guess this question is pointless.....

Very rarely does a video game ever match up to my real life, but this was just like I was relating a story from my past! I was aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt from 1986 to 1990 which is when this mission takes place. We were assigned the Mediterranean, Norwegian Sea, the Barents, all the nasty weather water up north. At that time the F18 C/D was the version we had and of course the Tomcats. Nice video! Makes me nostalgic!
DCS is fascinating. I have flow Airbus and Boeing for 30 years in various sims, but DCS makes me feel like a complete idiot. A lot to learn and your video helps a lot!
Any landing you can walk away from is a good one ..... and if you can still use the aircraft afterwards, then it's a GREAT landing. So I've been told.
Can't wait to modify this mission with F-14's.
No need to change it, Just make the F-14's flying the BARCAP to the north playable.
I actually expect that ED may do this themselves turning this mission into a co-op mission.

Loved the video Magz but a bit of clarification. Being a navy vet onboard the USS Harry S. Truman, your ass chewing is coming from the LSO's at the landing debrief in the ready room. The CAG will make jokes at your expense as you got beat up in your victories and weary eyes from your squadronmates as you made it back and your wingman didn't. Backslaps and handshakes all around at your safe return and the bottom of the flight board for your next sortie. LSO's would have prefer you wave off and ditch near the boat so its easier to get you and the helos would have been there in minutes to get you out if this was real life. But loved the video and the top gun fly by was awesome to say the least. Good job

It's the same with me and the Mustang... No HOTAS and head tracking = not many flight hours...
I have not flown this sim yet,but I play BMS with a xbox controller...after learning to fly it with key board and mouse. 😏

just a tip for the next time you need to set her down. uncage or cage the HUD. you flight path vector didn't show the correct flight path. will make it a little easier next time

i think the default keybind is c but just set your own and you can simply toggle between caged and uncaged

At least it's the right class. You could always pretend the 74 is actually 71. Then it might work out.. lol
Wikipedia says: F/A-18C was available in '87 as an upgrade. But not with the engines nor some other systems the DCS version has :)

@@MagzGTV The C model and D model most certainly WERE in existence in 1989! Not lot 20 mind you, but they were there. They used the APG-65 radar instead of the later APG-73 radar of the lot 20 builds.
VFA-34 was still operating the A-6E Intruder in 1989. The livery isn't late 80's accurate either. The roundels and squadron marking we're usually in black rather than grey and the grey the Hornets were painted in was a more grainy blueish hue.

Flaps being down and EW kit being off triggered me like crazy.
I had a landing during one of these campaigns after taking lots of small arms ground fire... I noticed that I had a fuel leak, climbed to 30k+ feet. I actually made an insane carrier landing with about 100-200 pounds of fuel left, was shocked I made it home.

Hey mate this is great to watch but I was hoping for some instructions on what you were pressing and why.
Man I had a similar BDA the first time I did that mission, i just went fuckit, and didn't drop flaps at all, the async lift was too much to trim out for landing. I should check up on how to transfer my fuel next time LOL

I'd love to be a fly in the wall when you spoke to your CAG about that mission... And when you spoke your crew chief...
The crew chief would slap him on the shoulder and congradulate him Four kills! The jet is a killing machine and can be fixed. The pilot is supposed to push it and win. So it will need maintenance. Big woof.
If you have the option as an Alert fighter, you should avoid drop tanks if at all possible. It adds undue parasite drag and you'll have more than enough onboard fuel in the Hornet to dogfight and RTB. Just don't use burner all the time and try to engage with AMRAAMs from MER when possible.
I completed this mission after 4 failures. The problem was, that not only Fulcrums, but also Su-24 Fencers had joined the dogfight and kept firing FOX-2s, in that case R-60s.
Would a flaps up landing not have been a better option given the asymmetric lift and buggered engine? Also no RWR, was that a mission restriction or did you forget it? Otherwise great job man!

I’m new to the dcs videos, what do you mean by you’re flying with the markers on and why?
By markers I am referring to the red name tags on enemy aircraft, DCS is a full sim and as such is designed to not be played with them on.
As for why I do have them on, I'm almost totally blind in my left eye and have a major issues with my right eye that needs the use of specialized contacts to correct, but they don't correct my vision totally.

I am a newbie to this. Having trouble getting past mission 1. My missiles don't seem to hit their targets and I get lit up like a Christmas tree and constantly shot down. I am following all the protocols. can't seem to line up the opposing aircraft because all I am doing is dodging their missiles.What am I doing wrong. Thanks.
Games have moved in a little since playing F18 interceptor on the Amiga late 80s.

I always fly with markers on, I know its not realistic but to me its more fun knowing what I'm shooting at.
There's more about labels (markers). At close range dogfight, they help to find your enemy. Unlike human enemies on multiplayer server, AI-controlled enemies don't need to look around to find you. They are part of game algorithms. They always know where you are. Always.
4:56 the second time you lock onto the MIG, why does it show a square and a cross? I thought that means a friendly?

I see im not the only one with an issue with RWR on this mission, for whatever reason it just wont work and I have to use the dispenser manually and look for launches :S
how far would a carrier have to tilt before the planes started sliding around? they dont look tied down.
They are, all aircraft on deck are tied and blocked down unless being moved for launch or storage.

Magz....probably a stupid question from a fng just starting to tackle this mission. Why is "loft" under the Aim 7 on the HUD? Isn't Loft a bombing procedure?
No, you can loft missiles as well to increase potential maximum range.

Don’t think it’s your centre tank giving you the heavy feel... flaps are still extended to half?
Shouldn't matter if they modeled it correctly , flaps will only be scheduled during half setting when , wow set, in landing config with lef scheduled by aoa and Tef scheduled by air data . He should just get a flaps
Light and fces caution light and a master caution light,these didn't come on when he exceeds 243 knots but the fcs will do what ever it wants with the flaps which it did because they were stream lined when cruising at about 3:19
@@ekkadecker No sir, when you select half flaps, the Hornet doesn't use the "living wing" feature as it does when set to "auto". They'd have been damaged as fast as he was going, and it would've been very noticeable that he was dirty in the real jet. So again, the FCS won't perform flap movement automatically *unless* you're in "auto" mode. Period.

I cant even launch off the carrier right. I can do it in training from cold start but its already started on the carrier and its acting horrible

Try playing with the enemy tags off. You have to use air to air radar then.
Ok, but first if you would like to try flying while being blind in one eye and near blind in the other. I run the markers because I have a visual disability mate.

you do know that in close combat (dog fight) you need always a visual on the enemy? and when playing on a monitor it's like a one pixel on the screen...
why is my RWR not working in this mission? i get shot down with the mig with no wwarning
This happened to me too. MiGs in his mission don't use radar guided missiles, but only infra-red guided R-60 missiles. To lock-on target at short distance, MiG-29 doesn't need any radar, but an infra-red sensor, called EOS. It gives you no warning on RWR. I had to use flare dispenser in "bypass" mode and release one flare per second.
