- The Bougainville Copper Project and the islands towns and villages required power. Here is a story of some of the people and equipment that helped to provide that power. I used to walk over that power station cause it was built under ground next to the beach when I was a young boy. Never seen anything like that anywhere else. Only in Bougainville.. Thanks for the Video.❤
Hi Bob, thank you for the video. I was involved in the construction phase of this project, I worked with a company called World service during my school holidays, fitting the turbines and all steam piping etc. I learned and gain great experience I was only 15years old, probably under age in todays standards but in those early years age wasn't a big issue i guess. But yes great memories being a local from Rorovana, it saddens me, to see it destroyed, the efforts put into it during and after the construction phase is unimaginable.
That's pretty amazing, it must have been a huge shock for you to experience something like that coming from Rorovana. I loved the place and was very sad to see it end up the way it did,
You bring tears to my eyes Bob. I was there from 1973 to 1979 it was the best time of my life. It was good to see some of my old work mates. I saw a shot of me at the panels boy do I look younger. I remember you when you first got there and you help me change the set up the heater level controls the the commissioning engineers were out by a long way as the tripped the turbines on large load swings. We must get in touch next time I get up QLD way. Thanks a lot for the video you did.

Hi Bob, thank you for this video. My dad, a long retired engineer, found and showed this to me recently. He’s never been to Bougainville, but helped design the power station in the late 60s, so he was thrilled to see all the photos.
Nice to hear from you. Well your dad did a good job, I'm sure but for the troubles it would still be working. Over the years there were changes, the addition of the gas turbines etc and towards the end of my time there, the reliable air based controls were replaced with higher tech solutions, I never got to hear how that worked out. I'm retired a few years now.
yes I was up there in the 69/71 crew when old man Moses was collecting money from the boys in camp 10 ,his idea was to buy back the mine for the local people ,we were under Oneil industries working for Beavis and bartell plumbing we had a crew down at the power station site and a crew around the mining buildings

I was there 1970-1971 camp 6 . Only steel beems there then .. Worked for Company Mathew Hall ..
Was there from January 1972 up to June 1975 and knew most of the Powerstation staff.It was a great time with good mates to work with 👍👍

My dad was the last person to turn off the main engine of that power station when the war escalated in the early 90s...
I was there almost to the end, I'd love to know who are you talking about and when they arrived on the island? The problems started around August 88.
Bob Jackson: Spent 15 years of my life there. Lived at Camp 6, Kawerong Haus, Section 4, Section 13 then Section 10.
I was there october 2016 until october 2017. To much sweet Memories at Arawa , loloho,buka and Lae city. Nice beach and natural at bougenville island

I was there in 1972 working at the then power station witch was several stories and the boilers were oil fired, it was a much bigger and was there when the first ship came in 2 pick up the concentrate.
I probably knew a lot of the people you worked with. Joe Dunn, John Dutton, John Black etc.
@@bobjackson4720, I had contact to many of them,Jo Dunn died 2 years ago. Have been in Australia 2011 to see some of them .

@@bobjackson4720, so did I, I met in Australia 2011, Ron Mc Innes, Eric Heeley, John Withers, Alan Wilson, Jimmy Watts, Don Huston, Graham Sharp, Bruce Muffett, Keith Britton, Theo van der Meulen, it was great to see them all👍👍
@@Pedro36523 I knew most of them but some were before my time.
I was there in 1976 - 77. I got malaria and had to be flown back to Sydney for treatment. I worked for Barclay Bros. Built Tunuru service station, a portable school in Arawa, extensions to Morgan Equip. site. Shame to see it all destroyed.
I had a few minor problems but heard it was worse earlier, the mission staff who came there were on average dead within 5 years. (Tropical diseases)
@@bobjackson4720, that is true. I had once a hookworm in my foot, that took some flesh away, only a thin skin was left over the hole.
