  • This is my third video on Bougainville Island. I was a long term resident, I have tried to explain the way things were prior to late 1988 when things started to go very badly for the place. My memories of the place are positive, the years there in many ways were my best years. Many people feel the same. Deals with a range of matters including a visit by somebody very special. If you found this interesting you may care to check out a Bougainville web site that contains dozens of similar images historical and more recent. bobbox25.wixsi...

I was just a kid back then. Loved the weekends at Loloho beach. Christmas parties were the best ever,... no other mining companies in PNG can beat. Loved the trips on the trains, bus trips, boat trips, the merry-go-round. And the fireworks in the evening was always wonderful. What a nice place.

BCL was the best, they were the most caring of mining companies and had a great team of people working there. Their attitude to the community could not be faulted, it's such a shame that radicals destroyed it all.

My husband and I were present when the Queen visited Bougainville. Also when Prince Philip visited at Kieta in the Royal Britannia we met, shook hands (courtsied) and responded to the Duke's questions about our BougAir work...(earlier on I communicated, by radio, with the purser of the Royal Britannia when she came into Kieta harbour... I phoned the District Commissioner's wife asking her to chase up the Radio operator who had not arrived yet.)

That must have been a very memorable experience. People forget, she was a very attractive lady in her earlier years. In the mid fifties myself and hundreds of other school children lined the road of our town, as she drove by.

Cheers John, the aim was to get it on record that life with BCL was good, it seems many there can barely remember the good times.
