- There is a recall out for this kind of repair on some Jeeps, and other Chrysler cars. But if you are out of warranty, then you have to decide to either cut your wire harness up and install an external relay, or to repair the relay in the TIPM. This video shows how i did it, and how the contacts on the old relay looked like. Horrible!
The original relay was replaced by EX1-2U1S
I ordered mine from mouser dot com
(Part Number Kemet 551-EX1-2U1S) The relay is not that expensive, and it is more the work that awaits you, when you try to replace it. Overall the desoldering process is the most annoying step. Therefore the external relay solution seems a good idea, if this kind of defect could happen again in the future.

One more thought on this relay. If it fails, the engine would stall, or it wouldn't start. Imagine you have to get a tow truck to take the car to the next dealer, if not under warranty you would pay for a new TIPM plus installation, and that would cost you more than $1000. The external relay solution is about $100, and this internal relay goes for $5 or less. Best time for this work would be a nice dry warm day with a backup car in the driveway. As for the time needed to do this fix, i was done in less than 2 hours, and i took my time, because i had to record this video for you.
Additional relay options: Mouser part number 551-EX2-2U1S
is a double relay that is used for Wiper, Door Locks, Front/Rear Washer. Just in case you have a TIPM acting on those, make sure you have your parts ordered before you open it. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

Now it makes sense why the dealer won’t fix it the way you did it and they put an external relay instead . I’m still having stalling issues every month or so thanks for the video

Very good video. thank you, i war searching the solution of the same problem more, than four months. In the service they said, that the change of the fuel pump will solve this problem. I accepted not their soution, in this moment my Jeep is starting like new. Thank you once more. Jeep Grand Cherokkee 2011, 120.000 km.

Thank you for the amazing video. Do you have recommendations as to which relays to change if the problem is wiper blades continuously running, headlamps on, and no gauges or interior lights? I changed the two double relay that are closest to the fuel pump single relay. I thought I had fixed the issue, but this morning the problem returned. I have one more double relay left and two that I did not change. One is the farthest away double and the other is the one hiding under the plastic rib. I'd like to get lucky and change the correct one instead of ordering another double and having to do both. Thoughts? Thank you so much for taking the time to make a great video. Sadly, the fuel pump has not been the issue in my case.
Excelente video, muy bien explicado todo, pero le realizo una observacion, segun el retiro de seguridad de la Chrysler omitio un detalle, el cable rosado con banda verde debe ser retirado por completo del conector 40, no debe quedar en el socate, en la misma imagen lo pueden apreciar, para eso se retira la tapa, y se utiliza el la herramienta MILLER 6680-2PA. espero les sirva la observacion.

You replaced the relay with the same exact relay that went bad the first time, even the manufacturer won’t do this under recall, instead they are installing an external relay. This tells me that they are admitting that the original design has flaws. You are only setting yourself up to have the exact same problem happen again .
I bought this original fuse box from a car factory in Baghdad for only $100. It is a very reasonable price

why did you fixed the TIPM or changed the damaged relay when you had the jeep working beeing bypassed with that little connector, that i am assuming you bought?

While this was a very nicely done meticulous repair and the video was pretty good I would argue that and maybe I can't see well enough it's not necessary to take all the fuses and relays off but instead to just separate the top with the relays and fuses and that top board all together and then take the bottom apart and work on it and reassemble without having to do the whole take all the relays out and put them all back thing?
I have a 2007 dodge nitro, how do I know the number of the relay to change it. He is the one who controls the gates. Thank you

I used Mudder 0.6mm Sn99% Ag0.3% Cu0.7% Flux2% lead free. That's what i have laying around and use for my electronics repairs. I assumed they had to use lead free solder in 2013, but not sure about that.
I forgot to say this in the video, but i would paint the solder area with clear finger nail polish to waterproof it.
Is there way to test my TIPM when its out the car?
Do you know if this could have effected my Starter? I recently replaced my starter because of a stalling issue that ultimately killed my starter. It would only happen when I would remote start my vehicle or when I would start it with the push feature. Whenever I inserted the key fob this was never an issue but one morning I remote started it and it stalled and never came back on.
Not sure, but remote start does not work when there is error codes or check engine light on

it still works fine. i read on the recall notices that the original relay fails because of silicone contamination. the new relay should last much longer. the alternative would be the free recall work at Jeep/Chrysler with an external relay.
Would i do anything different now? no, for me soldering the TIPM is less nerve wrecking than messing with the wireharness to splice in an external relay.
This does seem to be the only reasonable fix. The Safety Recall P54 is only for very specific vehicles and this same problem, this very same tipm, this very same relay is the same in many Chrysler vehicles. Unfortunately, the remedy, the bypass kit made by mopar, is reserved ONLY for the Ram and Grand Cherokee of specific years. They will not sell you the bypass kit without a matching VIN listed in the recall. Even if you have a vehicle with matching VIN, they are on back order indefinitely. NHTSA, Chrysler and Mopar are sitting on their hands doing Jack squat to help the rest of us. You could try going to your local junkyards in search of the same vehicle and pull the tipm. I found a 2010 Grand Caravan and paid $36 for the tipm. I have installed it in my 2013 and the van starts, but the radiator fan is not working. Buying a new or used tipm, 100% matching or not, may require you to pay up to $200 to program it if it doesn't work straight away and you can't do the relearn/reset process yourself. Your tipm is already fully compatible from the factory floor when it was made and simply replacing this $5 relay is going to be your best bet. Good luck everyone. File a complaint with NHTSA by calling and they will email you the form to fill out.
Thank you, but I use a fuse link between fuel pump fuse and cigarettes lighter, is it safe? I use it for 2 months ago till now, everything is OK? Can I leave it as is it now?
Sorry, no, a fuse link is not safe. Is your car not under warranty? There was a recall for this issue. THe best way to fix this problem is an external relais.
In case of a car accident with a ruptured fuel line, the fuel pump will not turn off, and will pump all the fuel into the accident scene. That could kill you or others.
I use this temporary bypass method utilizing the cigarette lighter fuse location and it has failed after 6 months. I've replaced my tipm with a same model 3 years older tipm from a junkyard and now the radiator fan doesnt work, but this will get me to work and back until I use this relay replacement solution shown in the video.

Luba Luba there are some videos here on youtube that show how to override the fuel pump relay with a wire. Not sure if that helps in your case?
I have no power to the accessory switches on my JLU, no lockers, sway bar, hill decent, heated seats. Dead fuses at M18,21,23,27,25,35 guessing I have a burned internal relay on the board?.....
Very much possible, hard to say from here. Could also be ground connector, or corrosion on connectors to the TIPM. First. i would check all the fuses, if any of them is burned out. Then open the TIPM and look if there is any corrosion or burn marks.

2014 Town and Country van. What is going on in my van is, the windshield wipers are going, all the lights are on in the dash, it say to check to service the tier pressure system, service the blind spot system. Plus it say the cadlic convert is gone. Getting pretty expensive with all that happening at once. I looked at the fuse box, and a few fuses are missing. Don't know how that happened. Have any idea's???
Could be a ground wire, or corrosion in that TIPM.
Great video I wish I would of saw this before having the dealer do the recall with the external relay , not sure if that’s my problem but my 2012 grand Cherokee overland 5.7 stalls when driving about once a month but starts up every time , when it stalls it’s always when I’m on the parkway or highway and as I’m turning off and exit it stalls all lights and radio stay on I stop put it in park and it starts right up till it happens again in a couple of weeks to a month wondering if you heard of this happening thank you in advance
not sure when you had the relais done, but there was a recall on that recall.
@@mygiguser yes both were done I’m now thinking mabye the throttle body might be dirty ; but when it stalls there’s no codes like nothing happened

How did you remove the old relay? Did you cut it out? I can't get the solder on some of the contacts of the old relay to desolder!
I used a vacuum pump.

Amazing video! Keep up the great work... I have a 2011 grand Cherokee overland that does not start. I have power to it so I don't think it's a battery issue, it just won't crank over. It doesn't have that "try to start, try to start, try to start sound. It has long Tryyyyyyyyyyyyyy sound. Almost like a bomb is about to go off then it stops. The truck did have the external relay recall done before I purchased it and it only has about 52,000 miles. I replaced the external relay but it still won't start. I replaced a broken ground wire that's underneath the right side of the TIPM that gets placed on a nub behind the alternator and still nothing. In your experience can you guess what the problem may be?
That's hard to say without seeing what's happening there. If you have the ext. relay already, your fuel pump should have power. Would be helpful to know, if you have any error codes. Does the motor turn over? Maybe no fuel pressure? Or is it an electrical problem? Maybe the starter? As i said, hard to diagnose through the internet.

Good afternoon... On a 2011 Grand Cherokee overland, Do u know where the camshaft positioning sensor and crankshaft positioning sensor is located in the engine bay? I want to purchase these 2 sensors and replace them. Hopefully that'll solve the problem.
What year Jeep are you working on? I have 2014 GC 5.7 Hemi. It’s having hard starts occasionally when cold.

How can you test the integrated relays on the circuit board and know they are ok or need replacing. I’m looking at my board and it looks pretty good, but still want to test each relay on it.
Not sure, i didn't test mine, because i didn't want to damage the controller that switches those relays. It is probably safer to just order all relays and change them all, if you want to be on the safe side.
@@mygiguser ok thanks that’s also what I was thinking. One is buried under a heat shield of some sort; the other three should be fairly easy to remove and replace. I guess I could also unsolder them; test them like other relays, and resolder them on if needed
Just got another recall letter on the recall where they fixed this by adding an external relay. Looks like that solution doesn't really work too good, and they want to replace that external relay they replaced. Not sure how that will look like, and if it is capable of handling more power? I wonder why one needs a second recall, doesn't boost my confidence in that engineering here...
My 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start on Thursday night. The power is fine, no issues with the battery since I can turn the light on, Radio on, and open the windows normally. Actually, I have to admit that what you have done two years back was brilliant, and I was going to do the same till I read your recent comment about the recall. So do you recommend that to go for the external relay solution?

I read engine compartment heat in the summer was messing with the 1st "fix" Omnicron external relay....I don't know for certain.
I've noticed a big pos.+ wire going from the 2nd recall relay to the jump start post near the firewall on my 2011 JGC.
Scotty Kilmer mentions a voltage drop on a 2010 JGC on one of his posts. If there's a momentary voltage drop to the signal side of the relay, it could cause the relay to open, open the circuit and cause a stalling issue, which mine currently still has on very rare occasions but always restarts quickly.
Would this be the same tipm as a 2016 chrysler T&C? If not where would the relay location be on the pcb? Thanks in advance

Can You explain the very last part of the disassembly (12:00)? I cannot get the tabs on each side to move inward to slide down the tunnel to let the control board out and you didn't show how you did it. Thanks

@@mygiguser I can't push the tab laterally into the channel allowing it to then travel down the channel. There is simply no room. I'm looking through a magnifying glass and the tab is too thick. I appreciate you trying to help and I'll follow up if I succeed.
I finally got the board out by shaving tiny bits of plastic off the 2 tabs. Removing the old relay was a challenge. (Did you break off the old relay and then de-solder the legs?). It's all back together and the car starts properly. Thank you so much for making this fantastic video.
Would a TIPM cause long cranks? Every now and then I get long cranks. Sometime my dodge durango wont start the first time. Thanks in advance.

Mine started long cranking. But i got a p000b code. Looks like timing advane solenoid
HI, mine did the same, sometimes starts, sometimes starts and dies, sometimes long crank no start. Other times it will start and run. The pins connecting in the relay are burned out from arching and the connection is intermittent. Hence the pump does not always work. I fixed it by changing the relay.
It was a difficult job getting the little relay off the board. Got the new one in. Now a new problem . Wipers will not turn off.
could be a coincidence. yesterday i replaced my hood latch assembly, and today i have the battery not charging light on. one has nothing to do with the other.
What i noticed after fixing the relay, is sometimes during hard acceleration you could feel some not so smooth shifting in the transmission. That’s gone now, must have been too low fuel pressure in times of high demand. Who would have thought?
The transmission resets after being without power and has to "re-learn" how you drive and how to play with the rest of the vehicle.

I've got a 2011 Jeep Liberty that has begun having issues starting when hot, seems like lack of fuel, turns over just fine but won't fire. It will fire for about 1 second then it seems like it has no fuel. Was your symptom the same?
Brett Gilbert yes similar. Jeep sells a fuel relay repair kit, if not under warranty, i would try that first.
@@mygiguser It's well out of warranty, I bought a replacement relay and swapped it out a couple of days ago, so far so good. Definitely not an easy assembly to pull apart with all of those stacked layers. I really disliked how they had all those press-fit pins in the circuit board. I went back and soldered all of mine. I've been burned by those before in a digital audio console, the connections became intermittent and would cause the console to lockup intermittently.
I had a bad fuel relay too on my 2013 JEEP wrangler. I sent it to an eBay guy to repair for about $200. Better than $1000+ at the dealer. My Jeep would stall and would not start back unless I keep trying for like 50 times. Also randomly, the Jeep would not start period. No crank etc.

@mygiguser is there a video one can refer to? So many people have been suggesting a few ways to take it out only for the implementation to be very difficult or impossible. I think it might have been easier if I was a seasoned mechanic, but I'm not one at all 🙈
I've already had the recall done. My relays are working. I have power to the fuel pump connection at fuel tank. Got a new driver side fuel pump but wont pump. Anyone know what i could do to get fuel pump going?
What does that mean driver side fuel pump? The car has only one pump in the gas tank? Recall done means you got the external relais? If you manually trigger that relais the pump should run. If not then there is either no power or no ground at the pump, or the new pump is broken. Damaged wire? Broken ground strap (not sure where that is)?
@@mygiguser the pump on the driver side. I've got power to the port where it plugs in at the tank. Just that the pump isn't working with new pump. The connector has 4 prongs can I install a separate ground to test and see if ground is the problem

I've recently run into this issue (2 hours ago lol) and seems to be a sudden case of 'no fuel flowing'. Hopefully the sun will show me whats up. Still under warranty but really don't want to be without my Jeep again after I just got it back for the oil cooler lol

@@mygiguser I see it now after further investigation. Thing is, the layout is different in the 2014 box, though sounds like people are having this infamous issue in the 2018s so more digging to do.
I blame the auto collapse circa 2008 to 2010. Auto companies promised the government to cut costs to get their bailout and they did so by cutting quality. My personal opinion.
Is this relay an upgraded relay from the original?
yes, they claimed the contacts were contaminated with silicone during production if the relay. my replacement relay is still working.
and the Jeep recall that was adding an external relay was repeated with a recall on the initial recall. the external relays didn’t cut it. that makes me wonder how long the internal relay is going to last. but newer model years dont seem to have the issue.

No hacer esa reparación porque les volverá a fallar el relay y es probable que se queme también la placa. Chrysler recomienda instalar un relay externo. Hay un documento emitido por Chrysler donde explica paso a paso. Lleven su auto a la concesionaria la reparación es gratis ya que Chrysler la considera Critica con peligro para la seguridad de los ocupantes del vehiculo. Vehículos con éste Problema: Jeep Gran Cherokee, Dodge Durango 2011,2012 y 2013. Los vehículos desde el 2014 tienen otra placa con el que ya solucionaron el problema.

@@mygiguser Thanks four your video. I have the same issue on my Chrysler Town and Country 2011. I was done many investigations about the Chrysler TIPM. The problem isn´t the relay. The problem is the overheating in the TIPM who burns the relay after sometime. Try to touch the TIPM after drive your vehicule for a while (very carefully). Any IC´s can´t last with that temperature.
Tengo el mismo problema en mi Chrysler Town and Country 2011. Realicé muchas investigaciones sobre el Chrysler TIPM. El problema no es el relé. El problema es el sobrecalentamiento en el TIPM que quema el relé después de algún tiempo. Intente tocar el TIPM después de conducir su vehículo por un tiempo (con mucho cuidado). Cualquier CI no puede durar con esa temperatura.

A recall is a recall. Not sure why it has anything to do with IN or OUT of warranty. Call Chrystler and ask them to refer you to a dealer who will do the recall. Corporate can DEMAND the dealer perform the work for free, if it is a safety RECALL.
It’s not really cost effective to do this unless it’s your own car
..when you can buy one from a salvage yard for 60.00. 2011 liberty and nitro have really weak tipm but I’m not say this is a bad video it’s actually a great one but this is just really time consuming to do

@@mygiguser yeah the 2004 expedition u have to pull the fuse Box down like u did and replace the fuel pump relay it's normally burned on 1 leg of the relay causeing an intermitent no start condition
So a friend call me to spark plugs on his 2013 jeep Grand che 3.6, whenbi got there i rialise that he got no fuel so i check the fuse Box no power or ground to fuel pump fuse ,even when it starts still no power or grounds to fuel po fuse ,so i'm thinking dealer allready done a bypass and the bypass relay is going bad what's your though..
