This is one of the most informative and enlightening treatments of this atrocity I’ve ever heard. Answered many questions for myself, as well, I’m sure, for many others. Thank you for covering this, and thank you, Richard and Barbara, for your talent and hard work! May all whose hearts ache over this tragedy find healing and peace.
Brigham Young condemned all who participated. They were excommmunicated. Mormons were on the jury at the trial of The leader. They all voted guilty. The US Government executed the leader who ordered the deaths. Best to tell the truth.
Brigham Young condemned the act and excommunicated all those that took part. The US Government put the leader on trial. Mormons were on the Jury. The US Government executed the leader.
It's a fact that Brigham Young made sure that all of those evolved were excommunicated from the LDS Church, AND THAT IS ALL THE AUTHORITY BRIGHAM YOUNG HAD AT HIS DISPOSAL. Brigham had already been removed by President Buchanan from the territorial governorship. These murders at the meadows were purely a civil matter. The subsequent execution of John Lee was carried out under federal jurisdiction and authority.
I am now in part 7 of the book and have been moved by the deep investigative telling of this horrific tragedy. Your writing is compelling as is your telling of the story with as little bias as possible. Honestly, I was a bit biased myself starting this book, feeling like an account of this history couldn't be accurately expressed by people associated with the LDS faith. I was wrong in that preconceived notion, but not without some level of justification as you will find in the pages of this book. LDS were often covering for each other telling tall tales and falsifying information regarding this horrific event. So congratulations on your intellectual honesty and your bringing forth this comprehensive work. It should be required reading by every person in Utah. This should be mandatory reading in high school as it is such a comprehensive history of the early days of the Utah territory. I discovered lots of new information and context in your book which sheds light on many aspects of our current day experience. The underlying fear of outsiders, tribalism and downright distrust of outsiders is evident in today's Utah culture and you've connected our history with rigorous scholarship and honesty. Congratulations and thanks for your very important contribution to all of us.
Are you aware of the religious bigotry that preceded this tragic event? Current religious bigotry causes rational fear? tribalism and distrust. The mountain meadows manicure(inexcusable) did not happen in a vacuum. In my Wife's and my Mormon ancestry(back to Palmyra) there are many stories of doing the right thing while being treated wrongly. All we can do is hold ourselves to that standard and fight reasonably when required. Make PEACE by reasonable means.
This is one of the best videos I've seen. Thank you for how clearly you explained it. I am a beller. Beller's stand belonged to my 4th great grandfather William Beller. Minerva Beller Baker, Melissa Beller, and David Beller were my 3rd great grandfather's older siblings.
To suggest that Brigham Young gave the order to have the wagon train wiped-out at Mountain Meadows, is outrageously absurd. If Young wanted to kill folks, he had every opportunity to wipe-out Buchanan's entire invading army, and while they were enroute to Salt Lake. instead he ordered them harassed and hindered, but specifically forbade any killing. Brigham had no wish to start a shooting-war with the United States of America and certainly wouldn't have given them an excuse to start one either. There certainly was no love-lost between the two opposing groups, but to intentionally start shooting (either here or there) would have been a suicidal act for Brigham Young and his whole Church.
I have Mormon friends that I am afraid to ask this simple question so if some of you true Mormons out there can respond to me please do. What did the Angel Moroni say when Joseph Smith asked him "who do say Jesus Christ is?" I looked for this in the Book of Mormon and can't find any reference to this question that should be asked of any spirit we may encounter.
@@TheNightWatcher1385 You are right. However no one wants to hear how the leaders of the party who were killed had themselves killed innocent Mormons and threatened to did it again until every Mormon was dead.
I am sorry but by adding Jesus Christ to Your Church NAME in 1954 it does not make it the True Faith.., AS your Founder took a novel written in 1756 by Presbyterian Minister and created in 1839 Mormons and made it your Book. The Faith in Rome comes from Jesus and we follow Jesus with Peter our example as our Pope Francis follows him almost 2000 years later we are the Church of Rome BUILT ON THE ROCK OF PETER.

The fact that Brigham Young did nothing to those involved in the slaughter of kids too and LDS revere this man, is just sick!

Brigham Young is burning in Hell now.
