I had a similar spec. 87. Add a k27, larger intercooler, 1.2 bar spring and Andial cold start valve boost enrichment for about 400 hp. Complete transformation of the driving experience.
You bought the right car . Body and interior perfect. Would check brakes have than bled might change pads. Change clutch change engine and transmission oil change plugs and radiator fluid. Recharge AC actually might should change AC gas from illegal Freon of the 80’s. Overall control and you have one of the best cars ever made by Porsche. Congratulations and enjoy.
I worked in Porsche dealer in 1987 and drove a lot of those. Beautiful cars,a real giggle to drive. The one I’ve always wanted was the 930 with the factory slant nose option. We had a white one with Mediterranean blue interior with white piping on the seats. I lusted over that car, tried my darnedest to sell it but at $107,000 it was a slow mover. Now they’re rare as hens teeth and obscenely expensive, even with high mileage.
I was at the auction too. As a previous owner of a 3.2 Carrara, I fancied the one without a rear spoiler. It didn’t make it’s reserve (a few 911’s didn’t) & I couldn’t agree a price with them afterwards. Watching your video has cheered me up no end. Thanks!
You are definitely right when say that what really matter is the pure driving experience, the sound, the smell of this 911. It is not the top speed, the fuel efficiency or the acceleration compared to brand new cars that will prone me to choose my dream car.
You have a rare 89 G50 Turbo! I'm building and modifying a 87 and 88, your repairs will be minimal and the low mileage means a lot. Change all fluids motor/trans/flush brakes and have your mechanic go through your 930. I would also suggest changing you clutch master/slave and look closely at your suspension rubber contact points. Enjoy!!
All air cooled 911's need sorting when you first get them. Additionally they need more maintenance then their modern counterparts. Being able to work on them and turning a wrench furthers the experience. Once setup they are amazing machines and you feel like you entered a time machine when you drive them. You made a great buy!!
Just teething troubles from a low mileage classic, didn’t hear anything that you can’t easily snd relatively cheaply sort out. But it’s amazing to think you can get near identical performance now from a new VW Golf R, even Ferdinand would be shocked.
I have had two big problems with cars coming from auctions. It was supposed not to car wash checked and certified but they both have hidden problems. The sellers in each case, didn’t want to hear nothing about the problems
Upgrades are part of the vintage package pal, and crack that window if you will, sentences are starting to colide. That is a beautiful peice of history.
That is a very very nice example. Regarding the AC, don't expect much out of it ever. My dad still has his 89 930 he bought new back home on the Gulf Coast of Florida. I don't remember the AC ever working in that car. There are modern compressors and condenser kits you can buy, but being in England, I don't see the value. As for your boost issue. We had an odd failure there. I was taking the car for a track day event at Sebring when the boost stopped. It took FOREVER to diagnose, and it was ultimately a collapsed catalytic converter. Hopefully it is the wastegate, but if not, consider having them check the cats.
Sure thing. Another piece of advice, which is probably true of all CIS Injection cars - these cars do not like sit and go traffic. We learned that sitting in traffic in Orlando on I-4 heading to the 24 hours of Daytona one year. Engine got hot enough that it knocked out some of the caps for the ignition system. I managed to get it going twice, and made it off the interstate where it cut out on me and I parked the car between a porn shop and a waffle house about 3/4 mile from the track. Funny Story - but, lesson learned.
New to the channel - good video thanks. Subscribed! Part of the fun of old cars is getting to know them and bringing them back to full health. The 911 looks stunning.
It's a beautiful car, my buddy has a black one and it is gorgeous. Once it's all fixed up you will be happy and everything will be all good and forgotten, just life. LOL . I think you need to go back and buy that LE also, so you don't kick yourself everyday for not getting it.
Damm it! I feel ur pain. Every car guy or gal has definitely been in that position at one time, or several times. Its a beautiful example and I’m sure it will sort itself out.
I actually have an almost identical 1989 930 going through the Silverstone Porsche GB Auction in September. Baltic Blue with 44k miles and Concours condition. My car definitely gives you a kick up the bum when the turbo kicks in!
Nice tip about the oil cap and unstable idle. My Carrera 3.2 developed a hunting idle when warm which turned out to be a missing o-ring on the oil cap. Nice car BTW. Would love to see a follow up with turbo repairs and impressions when you get it going well.
There is just something about the 911 that makes it look mounted to a rail going down the road. It's like it grips the road so tightly. While its body style is great the movement makes it grand!
Auction may save time up front but you lose all of that sorting out the problems that were not disclosed. I bought a Jaguar XKR coupe (gen1, 4.0 L w/ MB 5 speed auto) and when I saw the car up close I was both excited and repulsed. I could have refused the car, and had I brought a proper car aficionado with me, likely would have. Alas, I brought a good friend with no appreciation for the finer material things in life. I eventually had the car sorted out, and it was memorable, but all the time spent arranging and buying parts proved more than I care to repeat.
Can't imagine Silverstone auctions are overly happy with this video either. It seems you get more oprtunity to run over /start a car/ check gauges and air con at a run of the mill auction for a 3k focus.
You can buy an old shiter and cost a fortune that's called a rongen as we all know Porsche cost a lot of dollars but it's a lot easier if you a car doctor like me but we can't all be the dogs BOLLOCKS lol enjoy iv got an SL convertible R129 280 for sale if you interested looking for 11 k if you want me to send pics cool and just had a lot of money spent on car drive perfect 9 out of ten car cost over 87 k back in the day
Just a suggestion, and if you already intend doing it, apologies for my haste, but as a serious enthusiast it would be nice to know more of the "details" such as purchase cost, repair costs and generally all the work you have done or intend doing. Whilst not financially in the same league, I have bought a few cars over the last couple of years that have been treated to pretty comprehensive overhauls and the costs do mount up, but do make interesting reading/viewing. I appreciate you may want to keep purchase price to yourself, but I believe if you know where to look, it could be found out anyway nowadays, and it would be good to know if you felt you bought below market value, on the money, or as is usually inevitable if you buy the best of something, over the odds to secure it? Either way, a series of running report's on your cars would surely be of great interest to your viewers?
Nice addition to your collection. As stated in other comments, the teething issues sound minor and as a consequence of the car being in storage. Did you have to out bid other punters and have to go far above the reserve to get the car?
I know a lot of you have been asking, so let me reassure you that the moment the car has been recommissioned, there will be an update video - hopefully with a big smile on my face
Great video - thanks for sharing it with us. Should you continue buying from auctions? Yes if you can get the car for a substantially lower price than a dealer and as Long as it doesn’t cost the kitchen sink to repair. Giving it TLC is part of the fun and take it to Dub Customs for a wrap - hehe. Btw - are either of your classic 911s eligible to be ‘reimagined’ by Singer? - that would be fabulous project to watch!
I owned a black on black 88 Turbo. The proper word for these is not a 930 turbo, as they were only called 930's before 1985. Secondly, the rear spoiler is the "tea tray" tail on the 911 Turbo. The 930 Turbos or just 930 had the whale tail. The reason they switched to your tea tray tail was to fit the larger intercooler. Cheers!
Should I have bought mine 16 years ago? Probably not. But, as you can see from my avatar, the boost does work! If you're not getting a big "PARP!" noise from the left-rear of the car @ 5500+ rpm, your wastegate probably does need attention. (Would be surprised if you're north of 180bhp!)
@@TheCarGuysTV As you are, no doubt, selling this mint example on, stock Porsche parts (0.8bar spring) is the way to go. (Those wanting 330bhp instead of 300bhp, could fit a stiffer 1.0bar-boost-wastegate spring 😊)
@@TheCarGuysTV You're quite right. I've been somewhat presumptuous & rude. I do apologise. "She's a keeper, eh?" 👍😎 But it would be sacrilege to modify this near-perfect example; I'm promising you that at full health it'll be a lot quicker. (The other day, my '79 was enjoying the company of a modern-day M3... Little bit quicker than Hot Hatches)
My starter motor always stuck when hot. I contacted Porsche and they told me I was out of my mind. $660 for a new starter motor and the problem was solved !
Always enjoy your Videos Damian. I was never especially an 80's 911 fan - love the early cars and the 991 gen current ones. I know the 930 Turbo is a benchmark with its flared stance and whale-tail but it lost the classic 911 sloped back/shape in my eyes. Still an worthy addition though. Look forward to seeing an update video once sorted and your face experiencing the lag! A friend had a 997 Turbo and I was surprised even by the lag on that (I thought the later gen cars had sorted that.)
Excellent stuff and stunning car, nothing worse than buying a car and finding problems on the way home, but all good in the end by the sounds of it, looking forward to an update when its in tip top running order.
Thanks, Adam. Yes a real sour taste in the mouth. And I got stiffed with another item on the same day from Silverstone Auctions, so they are not in my good books at the moment. I'm sure we can get this car back up to speed relatively quickly.
Gosh ! I was actually shocked, it’s so crude inside . I’d expect so much more from a Porsche . Ok it’s beautiful shape and it’s old, but comparatively it’s very poor and cheap, you look at the Jaguar XJ 12 if same age and it looks like a fiesta in comparison
Lovely car!!! But at 6:40.....its not a 'whale tail' spoiler, its the 'tea tray' version. The whale tail has no side upturned rubber lips, the tea tray does.
My 1989 car gets better the more i drive it. Nearly 37k but was not driven for two years prior to my purchase. It's not a Porsche btw but was my dream car.
Was always a massive fan of the classic 911 turbo and though I can never afford one now, my 2007 Cayman S is more then a match performance wise and so I feel that I did in a way achieve my dream 😉
@007 T-5 911's are awesome cars, any Porsche is awesome lol 😂 Hope you get a Cayman one day, you will not be disappointed 😁 it's as though it becomes your best friend when your driving it, it's on your side no matter what you do, slow, fast, throw it into corners, it just shrugs it's shoulders and says " fine, let's do it!" 🤩 I had a Merc once and loved it, driving and seeing that bonnet badge always made me feel good, would always have another Merc, they are a bit special 👍
@CraigVader your right, I always felt that the Cayman was a more compact 911 from yesteryear, but modernized and with better handling and that's why I don't feel short changed by driving a Cayman S, they really are a bit special 👍
You could have dubbed your commentary in like you did with a lot of the rest of the video. Really you should have taken it back on a trailer and had it sorted by the garage later.
Great car nevertheless....One question though, shoudn't these things be documentated-registered so that the new owner knows what he buys? It seems kind of dishonest...
Yes, car is now completely recommissioned - check out this episode. In fact I was driving it yesterday. My Porsche 930 Turbo IS BACK! And now it's one of the greatest 911s ever. th-cam.com/video/weqwdHOwDqQ/w-d-xo.html
Looking at the catalogue description it certainly didn't suggest any faults - 'This Turbo has obviously been well-maintained and presents, both mechanically and cosmetically, in excellent condition' - That would say to me too that it didn't have any mechanical faults...
Yes. Trouble is, from their point of view, all this could have broken the moment I drove it down the road. Sold as seen means no responsibility once it's out of the auction's doors. There has never been any suggestion of a contribution for the work that's needed. Just means I WILL NEVER BUY FROM SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS again. So they lose out in the long run because - big picture - a bit of help now is chicken feed compared to the future fees they would have gotten from me.
Good for you Damian. They deserve to lose you as a customer. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a major auction house to be accurate and honest. Hiding behind small print and ‘the sold as seen’ ethos but failing to mention faults is, in my opinion, unprofessional and dishonest. The car is undoubtedly beautiful and you’ll get it fixed but I completely understand your disappointment. (Do you follow @torquespeak on twitter? A knowledgable and wonderfully pedantic Ferrari specialist, he often publicly ‘corrects’ the auction houses!)
Yes and it was him that encouraged Silverstone Auctions to withdraw an F40 last September after a less than honest description. Worth a read and google. twitter.com/torquespeak/status/903681198978981890
Lovely colour. Do you regret not getting the blue LE turbo?. Probably substantially more expensive. I still have my franklin mint black turbo model with lovely whale tail. Maybe avoid auctions and buy from a dealer you trust!
Oh! Good tips I can see ont the passenger seat, bag tie rapped to the seat belt! Things being said, you will never loose money buying a low mileage 930 especially with such a great body. Everything engine wise can be fixed with not too much money in the pit
Love your channel I’ve owned 3 911’s 72 R/S copy 88 3.2 Carrera 997 Gen2 turbo Obviously the turbo was fast / well made but not involving Both the classic 911’s were good but neither was great I grew up loving them hence buying them but I believe there’s a lot of hype probably because they where unattainable when we were in our teens ? I still want a GT3 as never owned a GT product Your turbo looks stunning ⭐️
You did good there young man! I drove a 1977 Turbo back in the day, back in the 80's and going 150+ was not that bad really. You simply needed healthy balls, and a rotten brain! I recently purchased a 991.1 and would have loved to find a car as you have there, here in the USA. I just picked up a 2013 C2S. My first water cooled 911 after three air cooled 911's in the past thirty years. Cheers from California!
Glad you have you on the channel, Mario - California is such an exciting hotbed of amazing cars, it's great to have your perspective. We'll be doing more on this car soon, once it has been reconditioned and is working perfectly. I cannot wait to experience this car when its at full health and speed.
Great video all round and such a gorgeous car. It really growls too, quite unlike modern 911`s. As you say, car was barely used, and its surprising more was not working on it, as Porsche`s in general hate sitting !! Hope its got fresh oil in it from the moment you picked it up, and that you have now sorted the Turbo unit and applied some love and WD 40 liberally around the car. Ha..Ha...
My all time favourite impact bumper 911 , nice comprehensive review there Damian , get the teething troubles sorted and it's a peach and only going one way in value, very jealous . If you get chance look for a movie called "No man's Land " made in 1987 starring Charlie Sheen , he plays a professional car thief that only steals 911's. A cult petrolhead film most people have never seen or heard of.
Thanks E92 - great advice as always. It will be one of the all-time greats once I'm finished with it. I'll check out the film - cheers for the tip. I wonder where I can find that?
@@TheCarGuysTVyou can usually pickup a copy on amazon or ebay, new if your lucky , otherwise used , I think it was deleted a while ago so not easy to get hold of , here is a scene from it . th-cam.com/video/rhZs4F3qe-M/w-d-xo.html
@@TheCarGuysTV just noticed your car was owned by the singer songwriter Roger whittaker , that's very cool indeed ! , just type ' mexican whistler ' into the search bar above. I grew up listening to that record on my grandma's stereogram in the 70's.
had a 914 once, does that count lol, on the serious side, that was well presented, enjoyed the vid, but theres always a but?? i would of liked to have known what you actually paid for this car at auction, would of liked you to have fixed the turbo then taken us on another ride, with the turbo working , thats whats missing on this well presented video, thanx mate
914s are seriously cool now - coming back into favour. I’d have one in summer yellow or viper green. The fixing of the turbo is another video entirely - still to come . Thanks for your kind comments
GREAT SCORE THE BEST CLASSIC 911 TURBO,AUCTIONS ARE GREAT YOU GET SOME GREAT BARGAINS IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING AND I THINK YOU GOT YOUR SELF ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES WELL DONE ENJOY, MY DEAR FELLOW WE ARE ONLY CUSTODIANS OF CARS UNTIL THEY ARE PASSED ON TO THE NEW OWNERS
The right hand drivers have to pay a few thousand more for the wheel on wrong side when they were new, a lot of work to move the pedals and wheel on them, awesome car, love the color. Did he mention what he paid? Had to be 130k US or more with those miles and right hand drive.
Love it, much better looking car than the LE and looks in great nick. Always going to be a few teething issues with a car that has sat still for that long
Although I love the air vents on modern 911 turbo's I loved this era for not having them but still having the big wide arches. I am a sucker for a classic original turbo. Would love to have a passenger ride in one.
Easily 30 degrees! In Australia we call that Winter!
007 T-5 Was meant to be “tongue in cheek” only because where I live a day of thirty degrees is a beautiful day
@@trevormillard1339 I have been in a Porsche in Sydney on a 35 degree day. Not fun !

I was going to add that, but there is a radiator.... and a whole lot of oil
Lovely car, had a poster on my wall as a teenager and fuelled a lifetime passion for 911’s. Really looked forward to seeing some trips in this beauty

Too bad you are not in USA, we would take good care of your new 930
Should I have bought mine 16 years ago? Probably not. But, as you can see from my avatar, the boost does work!
If you're not getting a big "PARP!" noise from the left-rear of the car @ 5500+ rpm, your wastegate probably does need attention. (Would be surprised if you're north of 180bhp!)
Looking forward to getting the big PARP
@@TheCarGuysTV As you are, no doubt, selling this mint example on, stock Porsche parts (0.8bar spring) is the way to go. (Those wanting 330bhp instead of 300bhp, could fit a stiffer 1.0bar-boost-wastegate spring 😊)
Tj930 Why would I be selling it on?
@@TheCarGuysTV You're quite right. I've been somewhat presumptuous & rude. I do apologise. "She's a keeper, eh?"
👍😎
But it would be sacrilege to modify this near-perfect example; I'm promising you that at full health it'll be a lot quicker.
Thanks for your kind comments, Yardelli
Excellent stuff and stunning car, nothing worse than buying a car and finding problems on the way home, but all good in the end by the sounds of it, looking forward to an update when its in tip top running order.
Thanks, Adam. Yes a real sour taste in the mouth. And I got stiffed with another item on the same day from Silverstone Auctions, so they are not in my good books at the moment. I'm sure we can get this car back up to speed relatively quickly.
Fantastic car Damian! Love the 930 turbo. If this is the kind of cars you end up with at auctions, please continue bidding :)
Good purchase. 👍🏼. Possibly have an engineer to inspect before bidding. We all live and learn. Keep up the good work chaps 👍🏼
Good for you my friend
@@TheCarGuysTV
Thank you
Please do a follow up test once your Turbo is sorted 👍
@007 T-5
911's are awesome cars, any Porsche is awesome lol 😂
Hope you get a Cayman one day, you will not be disappointed 😁 it's as though it becomes your best friend when your driving it, it's on your side no matter what you do, slow, fast, throw it into corners, it just shrugs it's shoulders and says
" fine, let's do it!" 🤩
I had a Merc once and loved it, driving and seeing that bonnet badge always made me feel good, would always have another Merc, they are a bit special 👍
@CraigVader your right, I always felt that the Cayman was a more compact 911 from yesteryear, but modernized and with better handling and that's why I don't feel short changed by driving a Cayman S, they really are a bit special 👍
When the turbo works a love and turbo addiction will follow !
Hopefully
These auctions don't allow test drive or PPI?
Open the window
But then you fine folks couldn't hear me
You could have dubbed your commentary in like you did with a lot of the rest of the video. Really you should have taken it back on a trailer and had it sorted by the garage later.
@@TheCarGuysTV what makes you think we want to
No, you did not buy the wrong car. You hit the jack pot. Nice job.
Probably just as well the turbocharger wasn't working if you were driving it on perished rubber
Absolutely! It locks the wheels at 30mph at the moment
Please make an update video when you get this car sorted out.
Promise
Great car nevertheless....One question though, shoudn't these things be documentated-registered so that the new owner knows what he buys?
It seems kind of dishonest...
Yes they should. Turbo seems v obvious because it wasn't working from the off. Air con the same. Starter motor harder to spot.
Is it not possible to reclaim part of the money you paid?
how about a follow up review on porsche 930 turbo bought a auction
I will once everything has been fixed on it
So 5 months later.... did you get it sorted out? Did you keep it?
Yes, car is now completely recommissioned - check out this episode. In fact I was driving it yesterday.
My Porsche 930 Turbo IS BACK! And now it's one of the greatest 911s ever. th-cam.com/video/weqwdHOwDqQ/w-d-xo.html
I look forward to seeing it and the enjoying the cigar that will accompany it!!👍👍
Ferrell Montgomery It’s a good one 👍
The work that needs are nothing, just details... It is an alltime great car.
I didn’t follow TorqueSteer - but I do now. Good shout, he’s a legend!
David P And you spelt my name right, so double points for you
Yes and it was him that encouraged Silverstone Auctions to withdraw an F40 last September after a less than honest description. Worth a read and google. twitter.com/torquespeak/status/903681198978981890
Great looking Turbo. That LE though!!! Should have purchased the rarer of the two cars.
Tell me about it
Lovely colour. Do you regret not getting the blue LE turbo?. Probably substantially more expensive. I still have my franklin mint black turbo model with lovely whale tail. Maybe avoid auctions and buy from a dealer you trust!
It would have been the same price actually as no-one wanted it.
Beautiful car! thanks for sharing
👍👍
I hate a beautifull metallic green one of these. Very fast and one of the longest drives in the playground. It was a Matchbox Superkings. ;)
Oh! Good tips I can see ont the passenger seat, bag tie rapped to the seat belt! Things being said, you will never loose money buying a low mileage 930 especially with such a great body. Everything engine wise can be fixed with not too much money in the pit
Love your channel
I’ve owned 3 911’s
72 R/S copy
88 3.2 Carrera
997 Gen2 turbo
Obviously the turbo was fast / well made but not involving
Both the classic 911’s were good but neither was great
I grew up loving them hence buying them but I believe there’s a lot of hype probably because they where unattainable when we were in our teens ?
I still want a GT3 as never owned a GT product
Your turbo looks stunning ⭐️
Thank you, Amos
Ha..Ha...
Thanks, Jimmy - glad you liked it
Looks stunning!
Lovely car guys,beautiful lines.
Shame they drive so bad compared to new models
Enjoy,great channel ✔️
911 turbo. Always the classic poster car 👍
Did you get this car sorted out? Is there a video on after it was fixed?
It’s in right now
Bring back classic 911’s back on the channel 💯
GREAT SCORE THE BEST CLASSIC 911 TURBO,AUCTIONS ARE GREAT YOU GET SOME GREAT BARGAINS IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING AND I THINK YOU GOT YOUR SELF ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES WELL DONE ENJOY, MY DEAR FELLOW WE ARE ONLY CUSTODIANS OF CARS UNTIL THEY ARE PASSED ON TO THE NEW OWNERS
I'd say actuator might be sticking if it's not been driven much
A great car and a great vlog. In the long run I'm sure you won't regret this purchase.
Cheers, Je S - I hope so
Beautiful car - sure you won’t regret buying it😊
The right hand drivers have to pay a few thousand more for the wheel on wrong side when they were new, a lot of work to move the pedals and wheel on them, awesome car, love the color. Did he mention what he paid? Had to be 130k US or more with those miles and right hand drive.
Can you do an update once the turbo waste gate is sorted?
Body-kitted 316-shed Yep, 100%
Love it, much better looking car than the LE and looks in great nick. Always going to be a few teething issues with a car that has sat still for that long
Do you think so - don't you like those extra air vents on the rear wings of the LE? And its almost-but-not-quite slant nose stance?
Although I love the air vents on modern 911 turbo's I loved this era for not having them but still having the big wide arches. I am a sucker for a classic original turbo. Would love to have a passenger ride in one.
I could never complain about a 930 Turbo ownership. But Im from Mexico.
