With the exception of people with albinism, all humans produce some amount of melanin (some very little, some medium, some a lot). We have melanin-producing cells in our skin, hair, and eyes, so her skin, hair, and eyes all became much darker over time, plus she goes out in the sun so that causes her skin cells to make more pigment as well. Her husband had the same injections but his melanin cells did not produce as much extra color as hers did.

Gender is a social construct, race is not.
