If she would have gotten a dna test, it would have answered a lot of her questions. She clearly has a black father regardless of what her birth certificate says. Mom was creepin during the marriage.
I really didn't see a resemblance to either parent from the photo, especially around the nose. All they have is documentation.. written words. She should have a DNA test done to verify her true heritage. Perhaps she was given up because she was probably fathered by a man of color. She may be light skinned, but she does still look racially mixed. She has black features. My own family is racially mixed and are of different skin tones from really light to dark brown skin. She appears as a beautiful woman of mixed race.
I think that at least one of her birth parents were mixed or light-skinned and actively passing for white and that they saw she was darker, and then decided to give her away since she was noticeably black. This is what I think the REAL story is!
I think the mom had an affair with a black man and didn’t know who the father was until she was born and that’s why she was given up for adoption. That honestly makes the most sense
My point axactly, most ppl forget that a lot of women were actually black but looked white end passed. U can see that her mom's hair was a bit afro like, she was definitely passing!

I was adopted. In my 20s, I received paperwork that identified both bio parents as white. Then, in my 30s, I reunited with my bio dad the entire family on that side. Family lore of my gg-grandmother passing, along with genealogical research that suggested the same, pointed to mixed ancestry. The research, later backed up by dna testing, showed that to be the case (descended from African American slaves on at least one line.) It answered questions for us. I would guess something similar for this woman.

The only thing I feel happened, is that one of those people in the picture was with a black person, hence she was given up for adoption. That is the only thing that makes sense and what I feel in my spirit actually happened.
I think her mom knew she was going to be born half-black, and back in those days THAT in itself was a no-no, aside from the fact she would have been born illegitimate. I think her mother did the best she could and gave her up for adoption and she was adopted by a black family. But her biological father is not the man in that old picture lol! 🤷🏻♀️
She doesn’t have to take another test. What happened is her mother was with a black man and when the baby came out, the husband left simple as that to fix things the mother gave the child up for adoption and they had five kids after that .
That nose is NOT from having European ancestry. She's probably mixed and its ok to identify as such. By the way, MANY people of color are sunny pecan peach in skin hue. People of color come in all shades from the darkest skin hue to the lightest. As a women of color I know and acknowledge all ancestral mixture, not black, but mixed. I can tell you I have women in my family who look just like Verda. They are mixed just as she is. Anyone can see this.
We all share 50% DNA from both parents, 25% from grandparents and so on. The fact that both parents identified as white, doesn’t mean that she has no black ancestry at all.
She is of mixed heritage. Perhaps the man listed on the birth certificate is not the biological father or one of the parents listed was of mixed race unknowingly.
One of my girlfriends from undergraduate HBCU looks like a younger version of Verda. Her parents are very light skinned Black people. Yet her sister is about the same darker shade of brown as me.
Her mom must have Been white passing bcos if u look at her hair texture, her hair was afro like but not that much. Don't forget that back then being white passing was a way out for a better life and most white ppl today have about 15% blackness in them bcos in the past, some black ppl were passing bcos they looked white physically. Genes are extraordinary tbh and they play a huge part in physical looks. For example, back in Africa there is this two black couple who gave birth to a white baby with blue eyes and blonde hair and DNA was done to prove that the father was actually the biological father and that is proof that in this World, we might look a certain way but not knowing our genetic selves. A lot of Black ppl in the US have about 5% drop of white in them and not only US but every place where white ppl stepped on, they mixed everything even genetically. Sometimes the mother might have not cheated as most ppl say in the comments section but maybe even the father had a drop of blackness in him which played a huge role in how the baby came out looking like. We never know ppl! ❤
This just proves, as scientists have acknowledged, that race is just a social construct as opposed to ‘ethnicity’ which is more relevant. All our DNA is 99% the same and skin colour is just a small part of it. The way we use the word black & white is really more about cultural stereotypes than anything else.
If all of you were born in Puerto Rico, you will find out what it feels to be just a person, not a member of any specific ethnic group. I think most of us don’t even think about our skin color, is a very heavy burden to think about that everyday!!

I'm a brown American woman with Mexican and indigenous blood and my birth certificate (California) says "Caucasian."
