    Probably the best review I have seen from anyone, for any of the 49 inch superwide monitors available.
    I currently use 3 x 27 inch Dell Ultrasharp monitors but they just take up too much space and too many cables now I want an adjustable height desk. Borrowed a Samsung G9 for a couple of weeks and hated the curve as someone only concerned with productivity not gaming.

    My 43" Dell U4320 monitor shows its age and probably needs to be replaced soon. So I'm thinking of U4924W curved monitor. One con is sacrificing the vertical space. My current monitor is 2160 pixels high, I feel reluctant going back to 1440. Sure there is more real estate in width, but you read text vertically, so that limits the number of lines you see.
    One of the problems with my current 43" monitor is that it's hard to see the edges, because of the acute angle. So I keep the two Visual Studio windows at the center and consoles, other less used software closer to the edges. I wonder if curved monitor solves this problem. Unfortunately, there are only a couple of curved 4k large monitors manufactured and they are very expensive (I think they are all OLED), most curved monitors are ultra-wide with low vertical resolution.

    • @ApplicableProgramming
      @ApplicableProgramming  ปีที่แล้ว

      that for sure is a valid thing to consider. I was "lucky" that I used monitor with 1200 pixels heigh before, so I didn't miss on anything :) but if you are used to higher resolution then there is a adjustment period for sure

    OMG, I just saw, in your setup the biggest productivity hack for a web development. With that screen real estate you can have your code editor open, desktop size browser, tablet size browser, mobile size browser and live reload them all as you code + have space for Figma to be shown also.

    • @ApplicableProgramming
      @ApplicableProgramming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is pretty much how I use it, except that I do not have the Figma, but some other references I am coding of. But yeah, that will work just fine. It turns out we rarely used full 1080p resolution for web, so 1300px wide is good enought.

      @@MrZerosixZeroone Hehe, nah.. you cannot do the same with two 27 monitors, I've tried. You can certainly achieve the same result with just a laptop, but you cannot open 4-5 apps side by side, and that is where ultrawide gives the advantage..

    Thank you. I have a smaller wide-screen that's curved which I wasn't sure about, similar as the concerns you mentioned; finding I really like it. Only have it configured for two windows at a time (Gnome keyboard shortcuts are set up to make that easy, Win+Left/Right). @@ApplicableProgramming
      I'm not sure what I am, undefined.
      For work I am a front-end developer or designer; occasionally it is beneficial to understand programming for work (Ruby), but I am not ultimately responsible for it. Hobby-wise I dabble in programming sometimes, like Python & Machine Learning with simple databases or in game dev.
      The visual side takes up quite a bit of extra space with referencing customer mockups and user interfaces. And projects I usually have multiple instances of my code editor open for reference and Github. Then working with clients, I have communication open as well.
      There isn't room for all of these communications and that would become disorganized, so I use Arc Browser which organizes clients by folders containing saved tabs, runs on Chromium (Arc B is for MacOS only).
      On my MacBook Air with the M2 chip multiple external displays are not supported and my main display puts my Webcam at an odd angle, so I use "Sidecar" to wirelessly extend to my iPad for video calls which is on a tilty stand below my main monitor and has a webcam clipped on it.
      I like the idea to take notes of how to improve your setup. I used to draw blueprints and take measurements to consider ergonomics, but having an adjustable standing desk and monitor arms for mic, displays, has made the process of getting comfortable fairly hassle free and not so stressful on my back.
      Now for my vision diminishing, the best thing for me has been having a window to stare out of and taking occasional breaks outside and keeping my monitor brightness reasonable when I am not doing color work.
      I also am trying whiteboard desk, but I find I don't use it often and would rather keep it clean.
      Sorry if that was a lot of information, I generally overexplain, as I work for a forum web software company, and we overthink everything. It can't be helped.

As I concept I like the idea, but there is something missing for me in order to be able to use it in practice :(
      maybe I can research some additional software that helps with that. Do you imediatelly know where things are, on which desktop?

      @notta3d ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ApplicableProgramming I hear you and for the life of me I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't add the option for a text overlay to tell you the name of the desktop when switching. You can name the desktop so when you hit Win + Tab you can see the names of your desktops. Once you get use to it though you should know what the desktop is for once you switch to it. Now this is on Windows 10. Maybe Windows 11 has some improvements. I can't stress enough that virtual desktops are essential to productivity though. Once you get use to being disciplined about opening things on their respective desktops it gets even better. Just think of how useful having a fresh 49" desktop with a single keystroke would be.

      hi, I usually work with 4 windows when doing "managerial" things, and it works just fine. Then I have email, calendar, todo list, and notes opened at the same time. I do have two central windows a bit larger, like 150px larger then others. which means that peripheral windows are a bit smaller. But it is a bit squeeze sometimes, so I tend to open some windows a bit larger then others and they overlap. Works fine, as I can just slick on the one that I need to see.
      photoshop, lightroom and premiere pro would go in full screen, as they have their own windows inside anyway.
      When I am doing some specific task, I have a button that enlarges that window to a double size, and I have it single in front of me. And When I am doing something specific for some time, like coding or studying, I might rearrange the configuration, or open more or less windows. But I would not use over four windows, if you need them in full height (like 5 outlooks and things like that). Depends on the app as well, some are useful, but some are useless if resized under a certain point.

      That is exactly how I use it. That is how the keyboard and mouse are connected to the pc, as well as phones I use for development etc.

      Another thing is that if you connect another pc via Digital Port and another USB to that second pc, if you switch input on the monitor from usb3 pc to the DP pc, all peripherals will be moved to the chosen input. That means that you have your laptop on usb3 with key and mouse, and if you switch monitor display input to second pc, same mouse and keybaord will be switched to the second PC as well.

      Excellent question, and I am now editing my "3screen vs ultrawide" video that I recorded as a lot of people are wondering how they are compared. You can share the screen yes, and they cannot see anything on it no. So... What someone has suggested here in the comments is the software called "Just share window" or something like that, which is pretty much a transparent click trught window with nothing in it, and you would then share that "window frame" and move it around the ultrawide. And everyone would see anything that is behind it. So far I am doing ok with sharing one particular app that I am presenting, seems to work fine, however... it basically sucks. Luckily most of my sharing is done on the company laptop, and then I just share that entire monitor, so somehow I get by.
      But yeah, test some alternatives before you sell and see how annoying they would be (and for sure they will be).
      What is even more annoying is powerpoint, when I maximize it in full screen on laptop monitor that I am sharing, notes and every other thing covers my ENTIRE ultrawide as well.. So I can only see powerpoint. Shomehow I managed to fool it last time, but as soon as I click chrome to google for something, even the presentation on the second screen dissapears.. powerpoint is definitively not optimized for online presentations

    Nice video, thank you for the feedback! Looking to upgrade my current setup, never fully liked 2 monitors, had and loved 3 at one point and I believe this would surely be a good investment.
    1. Have you ever noticed a lack of vertical resolution? Is 1440px enough for the size of the monitor?
    2. Lg has a monitor with the same panel, without the built-in KVM, but with auto brightness. How would you see this trade-off in a home-light environment?
    3. There are a lot of new panels appearing, nano IPS with 144hz, or just smaller (40-inch) monitors with higher resolutions. What's your opinion is this direction, do you think paying more for a newer model is worth it? I would use it approx in the same manner you were displaying, 3-4 open windows, code editor, etc.

    • @ApplicableProgramming
      @ApplicableProgramming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. 1 i do not miss vertical resolution. Actually i do, but i used 1200px before, so 1440 is "good enough" for what i do.
      2. My lightning is quite stable when working, i do not think i personally would benefit from it out use it at all. My home wall is dark, so even with background lighting i have it set to 20% or something. At the office i am at 50% brightness. But again, in Norway/Bergen the light is not that dramatic, at least in my office. I guess shades could also help.
      3. Not sure, i am not monitor expert to be honest. I still do not know that i see difference between 60 and 120hz. I do casual gaming, mostly rpgs and things that are not that fast paced, so not sure what do tell you there. I guess best would be to try it somehow and see for your self. But also knowing your actual requirements.
      Why do you think ultrawide would be better for you?

      @@ApplicableProgramming Thanks for the fast reply!
      From your response/video, I feel that even if the monitor has some minor drawbacks, you still consider it a good-amazing tool for productivity while doing professional work. Do you agree?
      I read that a higher refresh rate can be helpful because it's easier on your eyes (while scrolling, etc), I don't care more about gaming than you do.
      I am currently in a need of a new setup at home.
      With 2 monitors, I physically feel the asymmetry, 1 monitor is in front of me and the other one is left or right. I didn't like to split them with the bezel in the middle of my sight (the newer models may have quite slim bezels, but I had older monitors). In a lot of cases, I like having 2 big open windows and they don't comfortably fit in a 24-27 inch monitor, so I have no solution between narrowing them a bit too much or filling both screens.
      It's not impossible to work with 2 monitors, but I think it's worth the hassle/cost to invest in a productivity tool.
      A bigger screen would allow me to split the windows in a comfortable manner, you did a good job explaining your needs in the video and I feel that we share a lot of them.
      I feel that right now the prices are a little high for early 2020 monitor tech (because of the shortage). LG has an upgraded 49" Nano IPS with 144hz that is ~2000EUR, but is mainly out of stock since summer 2022, and the 1200 EUR for this DELL may be a bit high, I saw it at 790 EUR in a sale back in 2021. I tried looking at newer 40-43 inch monitors, but they are +1700EUR.
      Still trying to find a sweet spot for a monitor that I will not change for +5 years. If you have any extra tips, feel free to share them!

      @@spiedey8 "Do you agree?" - if you want me to tell you to buy it, I will :D
      I was quite old when I figured that everything is a compromise between a lot of things. Be it a price, convenience, happy-factor, quality, point in time, availability etcetera. I am quite fortunate and blessed to be able to afford it, even a used one (they are still to send me the invoice for it, but I do not push them). But I was also over 30 when I was able to afford myself a brand new screen, so I am probably overcompensating and acting immature. I can always sell it if I change my mind.
      I recently read Atomic Habits, 4000 hours work week, as well as the "be so good they cannot ignore you". If you haven't read them consider it, books change my perspective of time vs money (yes I knew that money was time before as well, but I never calculated it in real life money vs time).
      It is basically the notion of investing in yourself, either with skills or tools, or with buying more time from others.
      This screen comes under time and tools, as well as a motivation and an ego boost for me, and is a no brainer to own it at this stage in my life and career. If nothing else, I made a joke about it in the video, when others see the screen, they react to it. People actually think you are more pro when they see that you are invested in your craft. Same is with photographers when they show up with expensive cameras vs prosumer dlsr. Everyone knows that tools are not most important, but same "everyone" reacts to the tools when they see them.
      And lastly it makes me happy to sit in front of it. It really does, and that reduces my friction of actually doing things. Now I prefer home office over going to the main office, and I never had that before. All it took was couple of hundred of bucks for a new desk and a paint, few lights and a thousand for the screen. That is about 40 hours of my programming hours in next five years, not a bad deal for me.
      P.S. since I got a kid, five years is not that long period for me, I will barely get used to the screen and will have to buy a bigger one :D

    But if one monitor goes bad rather having 3 you still have other 2 to work so that is really important to consider because without your 1500 monitor you spend and its screen burns out you are left with nothing

    • @ApplicableProgramming
      @ApplicableProgramming  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      that is true, but... false at the same time. You could make the same argument on having two small cars instead of one family, so that if one stops you can still drive in the other.
      If we are talking statistics and "what if", there are actually higher chance of one of three monitors dying - then a single one. Just by having three monitors, you triple your chances of failure.
      But I get your thoughts, I do have one crappy screen as backup (just as I have spare wheel as backup). I just think that same reasoning could be applied to any situation (better to have two small motorcycles then one large, two small laptops then one powerful, etc etc). Guarantee is the same for all monitors

      I use dell precision 5570, and it has waaay clearer display, because it is 4K on a 15'', so a lot of pixel in a small space. It cannot even compare with other bigger 4k displays. So check your laptop pixel density, and compare that with other external screen. Usually Laptops will beat everything else out there (maybe not Apple displays), but then try to find similar display to the one Neo G9, and see its pixel density. That should give you the idea about what compromise you are making (and there are always compromises to be made :) )

      Thanks. Well I do notice the difference between it and dell 5770 that has 4k oled on 15inch. Pixel density there is really nuts.
      But other then that, Dell UltraSharp has always been one of the best panels for me for text and photos. And this one is no exception. In the company office awe do have several samsung and philips screens, and I really struggle with then every time I work on them. To the point that I was complaining so much that we will order several UltraSharp screens in the office.

    • @ApplicableProgramming
      @ApplicableProgramming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shaheenkdr Well I am not a display expert. I like ultrasharp for photography where colors need to be "accurate" and natural, and this is where majority other screens fall short. Samsung for example has way too saturated colours and sometimes some tint to it, with low dynamic range. At least for my taste.
      About the TV, I cannot imagine any TV designed for fast moving graphic and watching movies from 3 meters distance to be better then monitor designed to be viewed from 0.5m and for reading text.
      For me that sounds like comparing Ferrari with Volvo, because Volvo has same or even more horse powers. So it has to go faster. Numbers are just part of the game.
      If games are important, and you notice the difference, I don't think this monitor is good for that. If it is good for anything in particular. It is just very wide, giving some options that others do not have (like a very very long bus. It is not comfortable, not fast, not pretty, but it does the job)
