To be honest, that live version does not do the song any favors. The studio version is just something else.. Gives you a much deeper look and understanding of the music and lyrics.

The song is based on Ernest Hemmingway's book, For Whom the Bell tolls which is set during the Spanish Civil War. Hemmingway covered the war for an American newspaper.

The line before that can be found in a famous John Donne sermon from 1624- "Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it toll for thee." He's talking about how we are all connected.

This is the first song I heard off this album and still, after all these years, it still gives me goosebumps 🤘🤘
Fun facts:
- It is the song with which they have rehearsed the most, for which they had planned and prepared it for their second album
-Cliff's solo on bass had it already written and practiced when he played at his school graduation in 1979.
- During the recording of James's vocals, a "FUCK" by Cliff Burton comes out almost at the end of the song, which by the way is POETIC !!.
- Actually the hits of the intro, they are not bells, if not an anvil in which he managed the Danish recording studio or as I know, clearly Lars was the one who took advantage of said instrument to make the intro of the song hitting it with a hammer, clearly they put effects on it so that it had the aura of a bell.
- James learned a lot of music theory in this track since on his bridge, he wrote it in a hurry, in an interview Kirk talks about the problem they had with the song's bridge, because Cliff had to leave early from the recording, to be with his parents in San Fransisco (clearly he finished the bass tracks of the album before leaving, besides that he gave James a lot of musical theory and in this the musical process of this beautiful album and the song in general).

was the FUCK around 5mins 3sec in the song? I pulled up the isolated tracks and it definitely sounds like there could've been a FUCK around there. Maybe it was somewhere else and I missed it.
I cant believe no one in the comments caught this but the version of the song you listened to is slightly slowed down which sounds really weird compared to the original. It makes the overall sound lower in pitch and a slower tempo and it doesnt sound right. The studio version on youtube doesnt sound like the one you listened to

The on record track is actually a sped up version of what the really played to sound tighter. This version is what the original recordings sounded like.

Metallica and this album ride the lightning changed the game at the time it came out. I was a teenager and it was just incredible to experience this change in rock in the 80s.... I am 52 now and I still bang to this.
This is for several private reasons my favorite song of all time. I'm 41 and Every time I hear Bells, I have to stop for a second. If it's on radio it's usually Hells Bells by AC/DC. But at the random times It's actually For Whom The Bell Tolls, I have to stop whatever I'm doing and enjoy it.

This was the first Metallica song I've ever heard. Next day went to the record store and bought the cassette. Played the tape so much that I had to buy it two more times. Ride the Lightning I my favorite album and song but this song is special to me as well.

It definitely is a bit slower as others have pointed out. Also fun fact. In their biography, Metallica said that the bell sound they used was made by hitting an iron bar against an anvil.

I got a lot of hate for saying that on another reaction to this song! The producer (Flemming Rasmussen) has stated it in several interviews so I certainly believe it.
I would guess it was recorded and then played back at a low speed (about 25%); I tried doing that myself with a sample from a TH-cam video and it does sound very similar to the bell in the song.

I had come across this song in my teens, during the winter of 2007 or something. The bell sound, the basslines at the intro and the heavy guitars in such a cold weather was really an epic jam for me back then. 😄😇

Me too! I was listening to the tape I borrowed from my friend who was into metal. I was dozing off (listening to it late at night on a bus trip for band) but when he said "take a look to the sky just before you die, it's the last time you will" I woke up and was like "whoa" and asked him to make a me a copy of whatever album had that line in it. He gave me Kill 'Em All instead at first, which was also great.

this song came on the radio shortly after i got news of my dads cancer, i cried silently then, and every time i hear it afterwards, it will forever be the song that makes me feel his death. they gave him 6 months he lasted three years.

Me and some high school friends played For Whom The Bell Tolls for our High School talent show back in 1988...It's an incredible memory... lot's of our Rocker and Stoner friends rushed the stage and were totally headbanging and flying around the stage...
Nobody was injured and as a High School metal band this surprised us but it too was fucking awesome!!!

For everyone commenting on the slow tempo of the recording, he clearly listened to the original studio version and used the slower one for the vid to avoid a copyright strike, that's why the song keeps playing for a bit well after he's finished listening to the song

"Heavy Metal Jaws" - LOL This was the first song of Metallica's I fell in love with. I wore out and replaced multiple cassettes and then I bought CDs. I listened to this so much and I not once thought of Jaws but yeah I can hear it now that you said that. EDIT: Not to mention I've played this on both guitar and bass many times and never thought of that.
And next you get Fade To Black. And then you'll get two songs that often get forgotten. Trapped Under Ice and Escape.

Alex HUGE SONG. 1 of most viewed songs by them I'm sure. 1984 is the year. Almost 40 years ago! Crazy. Being at A show for that song which they play every night. 1 of most played songs that they played live. Crowd sings that song more than any other during the Chorus: Time Marches On, For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Metallica is the best band of all time. By far, Hands down , I can feel the music.
Favorite albums, songs, artists... Sure you can have your top picks, but life is a rollercoaster and for me these things come and go and sometimes you just have to listen to something then on another day you just might want to listen to something completely different. At least that's been my experience... Sure your favorites are main stays near the top, but naming the absolute no question favorite song/album/artist is something that at least I cannot pin down and nail to the floor or rather I won't. As it is a feel thing.

Maybe you're more familiar with live versions which tend to be a bit faster. But I agree with you, I was thinking "damn this is slower than I remember"
