I have a rescued Cocker Spaniel who was in a puppy mill. I have had a very hard time teaching her stay. However, using this idea of first teaching length of time, then distance, Katie the cocker spaniel and I nailed it! Thank you, Victoria.
First of all I have to say that i have searched a lot of videos for different topics on dogs training and yours is farthest the best. It is shown how much you know on the topic and you explain everything so clearly. I tried this video today with my dog, He is a 4 months lambrador and soo naughty :) We did this for 30 minutes and he has already learned to stay though not so long but that is a huge progress for me. Thank you so much :)
One of the first commands I taught my mixed breed rescue dog. She would climb the fence out of the backyard and go to the local park (4 ft. high chainlink fence - dog was a mixed corgi/beagle, so not real tall, couldn't jump that high, but boy could she climb!). She had to cross the street to do that (the thought just terrified me). When I realized she had gotten out, I would go looking for her, of course. Since she was afraid of everyone but me, I didn't worry too much about her being taken, but if she saw me, she would come running. Well, I didn't want her to run back across the street, so I taught her to sit and stay, then I would walk across the street and pick her up. Eventually taught her to not climb the fence. Would have been nice to know more about positively training because I probably could have trained her faster and not have to worry about the street. My rescue Yorkie was completely opposite. She LOVED people, but would not cross the street. She would dig UNDER the fence to go meet people. Microchips were not a thing back in the 80s, so I just made sure both the dogs had collars with contact information on them. I got to know several of my neighbors because of her. :o)
these are all helpful videos but i wish they would use dogs that actually need teaching and haven't already been taught. like a dog that doesn't know how to stay, or a dog that actually does pull on the lead,
+Kep fair enough. I've only seen more results outside of the internet using this technique. my friends dog just holds their mouth open and you drop food in. Pretty funny to watch.
AntiqueUnicorn Dogs are smart. The first dog I ever owned could do everything stillwell shows in her videos, and I (a 7 year old kid.. And the dog, had little to no clue on how to train a dog.. All they need is time and love and they learn the ropes by themselves anyways. Still there are more effiecent ways to train dogs by top dog trainers. Stillwell simply is not a top dog trainer. She is a hollywood glam actress who got a gig on a tv show, copy pasted some basic methods.. And made up a few out of her head... As I did as a 7 year old.
She's so adorable when she blinks up at you. You should try this again with a younger or more hyper dog. When I get my dalmatian in a few weeks she's going to be a handful!
Can Victoria give some advice on how to properly introduce a puppy to his or her new home? And what to do to make the puppy familiar to his or her name? Thanks!
what if your dog is not as good as Sadie and keeps following you or running away from you? How do you make your dog understand what "stay" means in the first place?
I really need to learn this lmao i have a 3 month old puppy and she won't let me go yo the restroom for more than a minute before she starts barking and whining. Not to mention when I have to leave the house for grocery shopping. I'm going to try teaching this to her
The "Stay" command tells a dog to stay in one place. The "Leave it" command tells a dog to leave something alone. When a dog is given the "Leave it" command, they are still allowed to move around, they just have to leave whatever it is alone.
I have 3 male dogs that I am trying to train positively 1 is 2 years & the other 2 are only 8 months old. They are a mix of 3 breeds; Jack Russell, Chihuahua & Shitsu. The 2 year old is the father of the younger pups. He can be territorial with other dogs & visitors. A lot of barking and heel nipping of trouser legs or shoes (especially towards males). From my own observations I'm wondering if it's fear (I'm single mum of ill health sometimes making me bedridden) Should I be training them individually or together? I don't want the younger 2 to pick up on the their father's fears. They have enough of their own. I have been watching a lot of tutorial videos lately and noticed that they respond more to the gentle but firm commands yelling actually gets them 'going' or shaking. They've recently started marking more than usual too. Want to teach them right but have physical health limitations. My kids don't live with me currently (older teens) so they can't do it. 2yr old very quick
Iaia Roma You keep the dog on a long leash for starters. Then you need to increase duration first before backing up, if you need to start with 1/2 a second, then that's what you'll have to do! Then increase it to 1 second, 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, etc. When the dog has mastered stay while you're standing right there, start to add distance 1 step at a time. The dog in this video is obviously trained already, so don't add that much duration and distance for your dog at first. If the dog moves, make it a little easier for the dog. This is how you teach the dog what "stay" really means. If the dog is getting up all the time, you have moved too quickly and the dog doesn't know what "stay" means so you just need to take it back a step or even start over.
How do I teach my dog TO bark when someone comes to the door? Everyone else wants to teach them not to, but I want ppl to know there's really a big dog in here....not just with signs. I can usually make him stop 'greeting' them after I open the door, but he won't alert me, or them, beforehand. and no, there's nothing wrong with his hearing.
Am I the only one narrating for the dog? “This is absolute torture, you might as well water board me! Actually water sounds quite nice JUST GIVE ME THE DAMN TOY!”
I would say it's not the same thing, because she's not repeating it over and over like "stay, stay, stay" and standing over her - she's doing other things like walking back when using the cue.
My springer won't walk because she wants to get in the car to go to the park we can't even take two steps from the car without her crying and pulling back if no improvements soon she will be sadly given away
I really would like to see her train with the dogs that people actually come to trainers with. You know, the hyper-active adolescent that bites the leash, can't sit still, is easily bored and difficult to motivate (because they'd rather be doing their own thing!) I get really bored seeing her work with old, fat and lazy adult dogs that either already know the cues, or are just too lazy to do anything else. This isn't realistic!
On her TV show, she also takes owners to a shelter to show owners what happens when owners dont take training seriously when dogs are puppies. They get big and unruly and then owners get rid of the dogs, owner fail. This usually helps wake the owners up to the importance of serious training.
When a purely positive trainer stops slinging treats at the dog for every little thing the dog does, the dog gets confused. Because purely positive trained dogs see the ABSENCE of a snack as a punishment (or negative punishment). So they believe the good thing they just did must be bad because the snack or praise was absent. Purely positive techniques create confused and frustrated dogs. If are you going to do purely positive, you better never run out of treats to sling!
JAJAJA... You are not a trainer. Youre using a vocal Marker way out of timing. Giveing wrong infirmation to the people. Please look for a Real Dog Training. This not a true base knowlege information.
Vocal marker or not, it works. I used all and only victorias vids here on youtube to sucessfully train 2 dogs of different breeds and tempramernts. They're both bulletproof in terms of training now. And its not only me that they respond to, anyone can give the hand signal OR the vocal command and they obey it. She is a great dog trainer.
Sadie's so cute, I love when she lays down, she's like ''yeh yeh yeh I know all this mum!'' hehe
Victoria Stilwell needs her own channel!!!!
Katie Galyon
please Noooooo!
No more bull ...%#@*&

Couldn't do stay with our training from a shelter. This was AMAZING! She stayed!!!

She's not just using treats, she uses praise and toys as well. There is never an absence of positivity, which is the whole point
Thank you very much for transcript the audio, it's very helpful for me. And of course the videos are awesome.
I really love these videos! They have been so helpful!
So so cute. Sadie is beautiful. Sadie has so much training. You're awesome!
fantastic suggestion. we will pass it along! let us know if there's anything else you might like to see on the channel as well
My owner tried this out on me today, and because I'm so lazy I laid down for it, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.....
Great job Sadie!
Awww poor Sadie! I felt so bad for her at the end. That old girl has a lot more impulse control than most humans, lol :D
these are all helpful videos but i wish they would use dogs that actually need teaching and haven't already been taught. like a dog that doesn't know how to stay, or a dog that actually does pull on the lead,
+DogzforLife Doggy Day Care I completely agree. I think these videos would be so much more convincing if she wasn't training an already calm dog.
+Jess M they don't do that because then you might not see results. They want you to see the final result and the approach to get that result.
AntiqueUnicorn Final result? They can pick any average dog... And show it as a VS final result. Frankly she hasnt done much.
+Kep fair enough. I've only seen more results outside of the internet using this technique. my friends dog just holds their mouth open and you drop food in. Pretty funny to watch.

thanks, eHow pets! I've been waiting for this training video! thanks to Victoria too! I really love her.. =)
I love Victoria she is so helpful
Thanks Victoria, I just adopted a high-energy Yorkie and will try doing this with her :-)
Great vid, love it!! I really want to see it while training a puppy, and/or a hyper dog. :)

Great information. Thank you for sharing.
Can you post a video about how to get a dog to roll over?
Can Victoria give some advice on how to properly introduce a puppy to his or her new home? And what to do to make the puppy familiar to his or her name? Thanks!
Hi!
During the training session, the "stay" hand signal was used several times during the same task, is it a risk to "wear it out" as with vocal cues?
You're welcome! Let us know how your training progress goes!
Victoria, how about me teaching you to stay? You run around too much and this is your funniest episode!
what if your dog is not as good as Sadie and keeps following you or running away from you? How do you make your dog understand what "stay" means in the first place?
XD Victoria sounds like a female Bear Grylls to me. Thanks for the info!!
AMAZING !!!
Well done!
Does anybody know what she using as a treat for rewarding her dogs? Is she using regular dog food or some special type of mix?
On her show "It's me or the dog" she uses chicken, so I guess that's what she's using here.
I really need to learn this lmao i have a 3 month old puppy and she won't let me go yo the restroom for more than a minute before she starts barking and whining. Not to mention when I have to leave the house for grocery shopping. I'm going to try teaching this to her
Does you use treats every time or just bits of food?
This might be a stupid question but what is / is there a difference between the stay command and the leave it command?
The "Stay" command tells a dog to stay in one place. The "Leave it" command tells a dog to leave something alone. When a dog is given the "Leave it" command, they are still allowed to move around, they just have to leave whatever it is alone.

she does have her own channel
Which breed is this?
She doesn't care for Victoria. She 8s the MVP.
Am I the only one narrating for the dog?

Do you still have your dog?

she already does. watch its me or the dog
I taught it to my cat.
Has anyone ever told you you look like Olgakay?
The dog is so adorable but she already used a dog that knows the cue. Not really that helpful
I do not think Sadie the Lab already knew the cue. If Sadie had already known the cue, Saidie would not have broken her stay at about 2:49.
how much more do you want she explain everything with details is up to you to practice
Anami Chowdhury She didn’t already know it because she broke the stay.
stay? no need to command stay. sit means sit! its suppose to have a built in stay command when you say sit or down.
You can teach them, you just need to be more patient!

You know owners who use these collars should try them on themselves and see if they like it.
should teach her to stay less and move a little more thats a thick girl lol
You have no idea what you are talking about. Please go troll somewhere else.
you are not helping as long as you use pre trained dogs !
Ameer Mazen Sadie isn’t pre trained. She broke the stay several times.
I would love for her to actually train a dog on these shows instead of just showing an already trained dog....
