Having ridden a horse that was not only ex-Grand Prix Special but used as a schoolmaster for riders wanting to learn higher-level moves I can promise ANYONE who thinks dressage looks easy that it is incredibly tough. I ran with sweat riding a horse that knew exactly what he was doing and I'm a fit, healthy 28 year old. Dressage is as tough as it gets.
Let's start with the piaffe, where the horse trots in place. "The piaffe was originally used in battle to keep the horse focused, warm, and moving, ready to move forward into battle. Additionally, it is needed to develop the levade and from that, the airs above the ground.
Dani Yes I’m reading her book. After she had a bad head injury she cleverly decided to wear one. She is also a great role model for the young riders to wear a helmet
Not every horse knows the "tricks." They certainly aren't born knowing what the rider wants them to do. I've ridden Prix St. George level horses, as the amount of riding you have to do to get them to perform all of the movements is exhausting, and that's several levels below Grand Prix.
Now perhaps those of you who have known me since I was a small little tyke you might not understand why my obsession with the equestrian sports and the pursuit of blissful happy, contentment. Love the Mano channel 😁😍
First book on Dressage - On Horsemanship is the English title usually given to Περὶ ἱππικῆς, peri hippikēs, one of the two treatises on horsemanship by the Athenian historian and soldier Xenophon (c. 430 - 354 BC). On horsemanship deals with the selection, care and training of horses in general. Military training and the duties of the cavalry commander are dealt with in the Hipparchicus.
If you rode for 6 years and still don't understand the basic concept that equestrian is hard, then you must have either not done much, tried much, cared much, or been much good at it.
TINKER162292 Yeah same!!! I loved the lady with the blond hair with the chestnut who freestyles to the ''lion king'' I just adored her horse my pony is a stubborn little FAT GUTS that's what I call her lol, no way she could do that!!!!!!!! LOL
Both of them had amazing rides i don't really see what makes people think this is stupid. Okay so controlling a 1200 pound animal who has a mind of its own and could turn on you in a slit second is laughable or stupid okay talk to me again when you learn your facts😉
Oh, silly, I understand that cavalry was much faster when there were guns. HOWEVER, when guns were far less common, control was key, as was tactics. That's what classical dressage was built on, control. Xenophon, the one that wrote that book on dressage, even goes into detail on how to select a horse for war, how to train him dressage, and then what to use in battle (Such as helmet, armor, how to hold a spear, etc.)
So, there you have it. This, dressage, was specifically developed for cavalry combat. now, before you give another degrading reply that digs you deeper into this hole of idiocy, do some research. Trolling is only trolling if you actually can make at least a shallow point, and you clearly have failed at that. Good day!
Please come ride my 18.2 h horse... Riding him would be hysterical for me to watch. Try not to bounce and then try to REMEMBER everything you have to do... And if your horse decides it wants to gallop instead of canter try and stop him get him to do what you REALLy want him to do. AND THEN continue on like nothing happened.
And then, in the spanish riding school, dressage tests such as the ones you see in competition like these were originally to test horse and rider's ability to be in control and sync, for war.
Oi.. No need for that. As she said though, I think I am done here. It'd be cool if you did some research on this! Because, be assured, Dressage isn't the only historic equestrian practice in the olympics, XC and SJ have their interesting history too. :)
Bet you have NEVER tried any of this type of dressage, let alone rode a horse in a competition before. Maybe even never rode a horse? If its "laughable", why don't you go on and get onto a horse, and perform these moves yourself, then say its "laughable"?
So. Having the horse controlled, focused, and collected (Horses collect themselves naturally in the wild when facing danger, as it is easier to move quickly and strongly) on the battlefield is easily the difference between life and death for the men that fought in this way. I think you need to think outside the box a bit and do some research.
I'll agree with you if you mean lucky Totilas, because Rath is still naiv with LDR. It is Gal who misseducate that poor horse and yet the critics are on Rath now. Crazy hippocrates.
haha lol. you maybe can control horses only with reins when they are dead, but only maybe ;) furthermore riding is not about to be in control of the horse, because that is impossible. it is about becoming companions
And, finally, you've given no good information other than opinions. No sources, no quotes, nothing, just your opinions from your own head. That is not good information, that is opinions.
And fine, I shall read it.. Again.. I see nothing that discredits me. Only things I've already said. Talks about how it is a term for training, the movements, the arena, the equipment, and that it was founded over 2000 years ago. And no, you resorted to petty insults at me, and you were a hard ass to that one person that tried to talk to you before me. Having an open mind would be noticing my research and my attempts to educate you, not smacking my opinions. Is your head still up there?
I have done research. I love military history. I know how they fought with horses, all the way up until World War 1. I can tell you, they didn't slow the horse down, because they would get shot. They had an advantage on horseback, they had speed, and they used it.
Wait, how does this stay in the Olympics, but wrestling gets cut? Not hating - I understand how dressage tests a rider's communication with the horse and it's very difficult to master these moves - but it just seems so out of place with all the other changes the IOC are currently making to the Olympics...
How is wrestling in the Olympics? All you do is roll on the floor punching and kicking each other. If you knew anything at all about horse-riding, you'd know that it's one of the most demanding, mentally-challenging sports in the Olympics, and has every right of being in the Olympics.
Catherine Barr ***** Both sports have their grueling demands but where is the sense in bashing dressage? Both involve incredible levels of skill, coordination etc. and equestrian sports are mixed, you've gotta respect that.
***** The British Olympic Association and the horse riding NGB helped decide which sport GB had a good chance of winning and this was included. "Rich toffs" are influential it's just the way it works. Your misdirected anger or envy seems like an underlying desire to be one.
Sorry, I couldn't tell if you were being serious or something such as being ignorant or misinformed. I do definitely agree. To a certain extent, yes. Admittedly, I'm sure there are some shady under-hand dealings, as there likely are with most sports. As for the anger or envy that is just my intrepretation and assumption based on the message conveyed. I definitely agree about the choice of songs.
For that person out there who's saying, " You just sit on a horse as they prance around" NO, you do not just sit there, if you just sit on a horse, he'll just wander over to a patch of grass and start eating. And why do you laugh at riding? Why don't you try doing a dance with a 1500 pound animal that can kill you with one misstep? And, they don't " Dress like a toff" what? Do you expect them to wear a T-shirt and short's? Just like, do you expect the marines to wear a tank top and jean's? NO, you have clearly never worked with a horse so, don't make any assumption's. Why do you question it in the Olympics? It's a sport and it has every right to be in the Olympics. Why don't you try riding yourself?
well that is just complete nonsense... if you don't know anything about dressage, then please shut up. its people like you who make the dressage scene look very bad for absolutely no reason at all. you are just one of those, who is going around and yelling out some storys they have once heard of, but never understood, or even ever witnessed. so fiy: none of the horses you have just seen in this video have been ridden with rollkur and trust me they were not harmed at all, otherwise they wouldn't be there. the bits are called curb bits. they are ruled by the fei who also regulates how "effective" they must be set up. they are pretty much the same on every horse. so no, they are not "nasty bits", if you know how to use them, you can give your aids even more gentle, than with a snaffled bit for example).
Lady. Learn about horses before you bash. If it was hurting them they would be throwing their heads, flicking their back ends and performing poorly. But because they are perfectly fine with it and in no pain, they perform and behave perfectly.
WildWestHorseLover The mouth is open because the horse has a relaxed jaw and is not fighting the bit, if the horse was in any discomfort whatsoever it would not be salivating, it would be fighting that pressure by locking its jaw or visually protesting against the rider as Amber Morris points out. And don't belittle a fantastic achievement by claiming the horses just don't show signs of pain because they're used to it, dressage horses at this level have very sensitive mouths because they are trained from the start by brilliant riders who DON'T yank at their mouths. Why don't you go research rollkur properly and learn the difference between hyperflexion and collection before tossing accusations around.
I know for a fact that Valegro and Mistral Hojris were NOT trained with rollkur... Did you once see them go behind the vertical? There is no "pain". Dujardin uses classical dressage and the goal is to make the horse move and hold himself correctly with minimal stress on his body.
Having ridden a horse that was not only ex-Grand Prix Special but used as a schoolmaster for riders wanting to learn higher-level moves I can promise ANYONE who thinks dressage looks easy that it is incredibly tough. Great job, working with a whip
I just realized Charlotte is the only one who wore a helmet
Dani Yes I’m reading her book. After she had a bad head injury she cleverly decided to wear one. She is also a great role model for the young riders to wear a helmet
I read that page in her book on Friday. I was riding yesterday and a horse stood on my head, my hat saved my life x
@Yanjun Sun yeah thats what I meant
@Yanjun Sun cant believe that was 7 months ago, still affects me now
She’s always taken safety so seriously. Such a good model for young riders
Well done to Charlotte Dujardin! That was a great dressage test and Valegro was a star!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Laura and Alf's riding to the lion king !!! it was awesome

So AMAZING 🎉❤
I really like Charlotte Dujardin and I will see her at Hartpury
If you rode for 6 years and still don't understand the basic concept that equestrian is hard, then you must have either not done much, tried much, cared much, or been much good at it.
Olympic equestrians make it look "easy" b/c they are AMAZING at what they do.
It's a beautiful sport and a work of art. Finish en klar
This is not abuse its dreassage
Love watching these rides

Fantastic Charlotte xx 🇬🇧
Adeline isn’t too happy at the question “If she was better she was better!” Maybe a congratulations would have been in order
HAHA. You clearly have never ridden a horse or tried dressage. It is HARD to say the least. It takes years of training.
amazing! i might start dressage
Dont
Modern dressage is so different then classical dressage.... :( I wish there was like a competitive classical dressage now...
Thats .... every horse is behind the vertical...
Gorgeous
Before you say how laughable this is, train up your own olympic dressage horse and ride the way Charlotte did and then see just how hard it is.
I WISHD ID HAD HORSE LIKE THAT. I WOULD LOVE TO BE ON CHARLOTTES COURSES
2:23 that's what my pony club used to win pony club musical ride since 2009!
It is sooo egoistic that Anky brought her horse out of retirement

Sleepfish, you obviously don't know much about riding and especially dressage.
What was the name of the second last rider? I liked hers the best
Charlotte Dujardin
Jaimie Little Charlotte dujardin was the last rider was Adelinde Cornelissen
Equi Megan oops sorry typo I meant the Charlotte dujardin was the last rider and the 2nd last rider was Adelinde Cornelissen
Thanks :)
Always will loge charlotte and valegro

Rules please
Many people have died doing equestrian. A ridiculous amount. You do realize that equestrian riding was developed for war and for defense, right?
you compete with a team and we compete with a 1200 lb animal that can kill us
you know these horses are good when they were all made into breyers
yes - I know, I ride :)
it takes time to know the trick.... not everyone has that talent tho. :)
Thanks. Watching this stuff used to make me laugh out loud, now it just puts me in the mood for a burger. Not sure why.

Ha! Right. No. Apparently someone's not very well read, eh? ;D
You shouldn't have posted that comment, it's laughable.
Why not ask FEI & Co., etc. They are the culprits of all of horsemen's crime!
or you can pay to have a "push-button" horse.
the fact that you think this isn't a sport is laughable... seriously, why are people so ignorant these days?
Wait, how does this stay in the Olympics, but wrestling gets cut? Then tell me about your sorry excuse for a sport.
This "sport" is ridiculous... yeah how many people have died doing this compared to any other sport.
Hundreds of thousands if you Google it.
So here we are again back to my point of they never used this in actual combat.
Yeah, maybe for parading, not actual combat. lmao

Its not that hard..... As long as you have the reins, you have control.
FRITZ That is wrong in so many ways, this is not about control, with only control you won't get anywhere in this sport
reins are NOT how you control a horse
I RODE FOR 6 YEARS! I do know lmao, it not that hard to learn to ride.
They have to hard a grip on the reins those poor horses it's caller rollkur abusive flexing of the head nasty bits to..... Not beauty

Dresses like a toff, sits on a horse while it prances around?
Not necessarily,
You have to control the horse while riding.
Trust me, i ride horses
This should not be an Olympic sport, it's laughable.
