What I would like to see for the shaped decks is the width of the deck at the truck bolts. I've seen some NHS shaped decks where the width is 8.5% but at the nose or tail it tapered in a bit to about 8" wide so my Indy 149s weren't useable. Also I love the stumps decks partly because they're so widely available still. You can always grab one.
Good point. We'll see if there's a way we can address that. Same with reissues where it says 10 inches wide but the width of the back truck vs. the front is totally different and rarely do people put 10 inch wide trucks on a 10 inch reissue. Usually 9".
Just what I am looking for! Size 12 men's shoe. After 35 years I decided to get back into the sport. How would these boards work with Thunder Trucks for street? Would the setup feel good or wobbly? Thanks.
concave & wheelbase are definitely top 2 things I consider on a new board. 14.25 is usually what I end up with, but 14.6 is super comfortable to me also. For rails/ledges especially. (Also steep concave forever.)
Steep concaves can make your deck stronger as well. Sounds like a future video. ;) Same here, I keep going back and forth 8.5 and 9.0 but they have the same wheelbase so it makes it easier to switch. Thanks for sharing!
XD yep im insane... i love flat tapered shaped boards ive ridden 8.38 and 8.75 axle for almost 10 years. First 159 standards and bakers and krookeds. Now mostly bakers/grimple and 159s and venture 6.1s. I mean i also ride 8.8-9.25 shaped boards with the same trucks so i generally just got used to them. Plus i ride conical full shapes for life 54-56. So that hard edge and lean mixed with wider axles makes for a really fun park/flow setup. I mean can ride concave as well often do when i buy those 2x80$ mystery deck boxes. Id just rather be on ventures or thunders with concave. I mean i love to do slashers/slash into grinds and powerslide so longer and conical fulls are where its at...and i love to lean. I just got used to flat boards with a heap of RUN for impossiles and spin variations. The weight of the wider axle/hanger trucks and fat conical wheels help a lot for big spins/full cabs/bs360s and impossibles when i have some run/flat noses vs an aggressive nose. Yet if i have a flat nose/profile with concave my foot comes off on airs. So when ride concave i need rounded nose/squared shape, and a more aggressive kick. Skatings a hoot
Can you make moe of these Stumps boards with a different base color. That orange looks suck behind the Green Creature logo, I’m sure Maroon, Brown, Dark Grey, etc would as well.
Thanks for this enlightening insight on skateboard wheelbase dynamics. I'm currently looking at the Creature Stumps Logo 9.0 deck. Can you please give me a recommendation on what size and model of Independent truck (159?) and riser pad I would need for a 58mm or 60mm wheel? Thanks in advance for your professional advice.
I would go with Standard Independent 159's (8.75 in wide).I you want your trucks to be a little bigger you could go 169's (9.125 in wide). 1/8 riser pad for 58. 1/4 for 60mm if you ride you trucks loose. You could probably get away with 1/8 if not too loose. Hope that helps!
It's so crazy cause I'm like 5'11. You'd think I'd need a longer board. I always skated krooked, antihero and alien so when I got a stumps I was nervous. It took me a few minutes to get use to but everything came so much easier. Kickflips, Ollie's, everything. I got used to the stumps. Local shop sold me another creature board once cause they didn't have a stump and man oh man. I'm still trying to get used to it and it's been 2 days haha. Is there any other boards that are just like the stumps in a size 8? Just in case I have that issue again? Never thought I'd prefer short wheelbase
I'm 6 foot 3 love the way the 8.8 feels would of even got a 9inch if I knew how small it would feel only issue is transition feet feel alittle close but will get used to it
Right now I'm torn between those 2 sizes. The 8.8 flips easier but the 9.0 feels so nice under my big feet on slides and grinds. I have 8.5 trucks on the 8.8 and 9.0 trucks on the 9. Wheelbase is definitely one of those things that feels weird to change at first.
I have been skating the Creature Micro Completes and love em but Would Love to have a wider deck than 7.25 for some spec trucks be nice to have a 8.25 X 28.25 11.25 WB
I ride a 8.5, 14 3/8wb, mellow kicks, 6.6 tail with indy forged. I wonder how much the shorter tail/wheelbase would help, feels heavy sometimes.. might have to try one of these out 👍
Not only wheelbase matters, but also where the kicks sit (the mold itself) - especially if you are not a typical rider of average proportions. When you're 5'2 you end up with no good options, unfortunately. Either squeezing onto a kids deck or having something way too long to ollie well and control easily. Creature has so many kids molds the appear to have shorter presses but they are all completes and birch - why?? Hopefully more companies will try a little harder in the future. I am glad you found a nice shape that will satisfy the other end of the spectrum :)
I love boards with a longer wheelbase. Since I’m not a technical guy, I want to feel secure when I grind curbs and when I carve. At the end of the day, it’s about having fun.
I ride a 9"x32" Girl deck with a 13.875 WB. The call the shape "love seat" on their site. I tried the larger 9.25x32 Girl deck with the same 13.875 WB, and while it was fun, it's a little heavy. I am stoked to try these new Creature Stumps though.
The Santa Cruz Delfino Tarot VX Deck 8.25in x 31.60in is coming out in September and has a 14" wheelbase. Also, it looks like in Novemeber there's the Creature Claws Everslick 8.43in x 31.62in.
I skate 15” wheelbase.. i am 6’5 with broad shoulders and like a 35 ish inseam… ive always wondered ron. How you skate regular sized wheelbase man! I skate the antihero 9.0” 33.25 long , 15.00 wheel base.. its perfect.
When I was 17 and first got to start making my own deck shapes at nhs the first one I made was 32-33" long and had a 15"+ wheelbase - a lot like the board you're talking about. Fast fwd to mid 20's I was riding a 7.5 with around 14.5 wb. I think since I started skating a lot through the end of the 80's/early 90's and all the changes skateboards went though (from 80's vert boards with 67mm wheels to football shapes with 43mm wheels) it made it easier to get used to smaller decks.
14,25“ wb on anything above 8,5“ feel great for me personally. Big feet require me to ride bigger boards, and I haven’t felt so comfy on a board since the 9“ Eric Dressen Rose cross board with 14,25“wb. If I can get my hands on some Creature Stomps in Europe - I will! Also: MAKE MORE WINKOWSKI DECKS SO EVERYONE CAN GET SOME 😅
@ghostdancing when it reads in deck specs that WB is for example 14,25“, it means from inner bolt hole to inner bolt hole. The actual axle is further apart than that with every truck. But yeah, Indys and ACEs have some the shortest wheelbases, hence the great turning! Ventures turn the worst in my opinion, but they do serve that pop real good!
Same here with the size 13's. Santa Cruz and Creature share some of the same shapes including the 8.8 and 9.0 Stumps. For Santa Cruz they were called the Snakebite boats at first and have the same 14.25 wheelbase. Keep an eye out for Creature or Santa Cruz decks that have those dimensions but they might not always be called Stumps or Boats. For example there's a Dressen Pup Dot 9.0 and it's the same as the 9.0 stump. Looks like a screaming hand version as well.
So true. Truck types make a big difference. I remember trying to older Ventures on my friends board and it felt like it added wheelbase. Quicker turning trucks seem to shorten the wheelbase and slower turning trucks lengthen. Low trucks or really lightweight trucks add their differences as well. Technically wheelbase is the distance from your wheels but aside from choosing a truck brand it comes down to the mounting hardware holes.
If you measure where the axle sits in between the mounting hardware holes on the truck you can determine which trucks move the axle away from the inside bolt holes (making your wheelbase longer) and which one stay closer towards the inside (shorter wheelbase). Shout out to to Ben D!
@@MarcoEckhardt also they power slide like no other prob bc the WB/wider riding stance. As always IMO indys turn the best gold standard in transition, thunder metal to metal grind the best unlike any other they FLY on metal coping/rails, venture POP the best BS/FS airs with ventures make me feel like im cheating on indys..and the ventures BLAST with minimal speed in flow/park. But indys just have that genuine classic/gold standard skate/feel. ESP at high speeds. 1/2 of me feels like i skate indys just bc of the pros/legends that did and i dont want to miss out on that FEEL/RIDE to feel what they feel or ride what they ride. Yet when i do a snappy bs 180 all boned or a brute fs/bs air with ventures...i feel like more of a skater than any truck ive skated.
i mean yeah but often the park/transition will come to BITE you from variation to variation in setups...as you do get comfortable/adapt...you often forget what youre riding/how to ride it mid trick. In my case i try to land with ventures all the time like im riding indys...and eat it....yet the ventures POP like no other in transition they just blast. You think you have to pump massive pop into them like indy standards...next thing you know youre just zooming and catching air landing transfers way further than with indys. As fun as it is to ride a quiver...its when i forget to respect each setup for what it offers...and overlap a trick im trying with a specific setup...by trying said trick...as if i were riding something else....it leads to catastrophe XD. And once im injured or on the back end of the session...i wind up skating my favorite setup out of max/comfort. Some setups= more tricks, others=more speed/air.
What setup would you recommend to an old ass man(me) with weak legs that's trying to make ollies as easy as possible? Short board, 14.25 WB that's as light as possible ...maybe?
I'm tossed between wb big time. I feel like I want a wider stance so my feet can move around comfortably but I want it to flip easy. Maybe I need a thinner board long wb @NHS Skate Direct
@@NHSSkateDirect Yea he mentioned in the video it's just the hangers are looking sleeker. Either way Ron rules and I always enjoy these videos he does!
Yeah I'm not even 5'7, so I was always wondering if I could get something that would fit my stance width... The options are not very plenty over here in south korea lol BTW I don't see the stumps on the website I think..?
We should be getting them back at nhsfunctory.com around the end of July. Some of our retailers still have them and some ship internationally. Maybe check CCS and Skate Warehouse.
@@NHSSkateDirect Ah yes, I've heard about the shortage going around as well...it would defo be nice to go up a size with the same wheelbase as I've been sticking with a 7.75 forever.
I and pretty short 156cm and have short legs but i like my boards around 8.0-8.125" wide. But i feel most boards that wide are usually pretty long for me. Like all the tricks and motions are HUGE for me. I would LOVE a board 8.125" wide, around 30" long and a wheelbase around 12-12.5. Do you have any options?? Or know where i could go for help? I mean i could get good and turn pro so i can have a custom board shape but that seems like a lot of work just to find a board i like
So a 12/12.5 wb is pretty short. The shortest wheelbase decks we sell are 14" wb. We do have skate completes with smaller wheelbases but they aren't that wide. Our micros have 11" wb, minis, 13" and mid completes are 13.5. www.nhsfunfactory.com/skate/complete-skateboards Also, are you measure from the holes in the deck?
What I really want is a 8.6 with a 14.25” wheelbase, a 7” Nose, and a 6 3/4” tail that would be my ideal creature, and also in VX because I’m a heavy dude. That would be the dream
The closest deck that we have to that right now is this Santa Cruz Transcend Hands VX Deck 8.80in x 31.95in. We're out of them right now but it looks like there's more coming around the end of July. Here's one I found online: www.focusmadison.com/products/santa-cruz-transcend-stack-dot-vx-skateboard-deck-8-8?variant=39890852905119 With the pandemic and not being able to produce enough decks for the demand of skateboarding lately we aren't able to make as many special constructions like VX and everslick as we'd like. I'm actually about to ride that deck too. VX rules.
For me WB isnt as noticeable...short seems ideal for "tech" skating or etc...even then id be better off just swapping to thunders and smaller profile wheels before thinking about a WB/deck length swap. Personally deck "RUN" is a lot bigger of a factor to me than .5" garnered towards a nose and tail. Sometimes its just WB...when in reality id rather have .25" on both my nose and tail as extra RUN. For half cabs and impossibles and bs 360s. Same to that added run serving as a "platform" for popping/locking into nose/tail slides a lot easier than a board with a more aggressive/immediate curve on the nose/tail from bolts. WB aside. I guess if you ONLY skated the same wheels/trucks all the time a WB swap would be more Practical of a concept to adapt...I just need that "length" vs a shortie...for those airs/transfers...nothing worse than your front foot coming off mid fs/bs air...or for fs and bs lips in transition makes for some epic Slams esp when youre front foot comes off slightly on those airs...and you land with your front foot too close to your top truck and you get tossed or flat bottomed from a hang up....or dont even hang up but land way too nose heavy and instantly wheelbite on contact/land.
The shortest we have coming out soon is the Santa Cruz Delfino Tarot VX Deck 8.25in x 31.60in. It has a 14" wheelbase. We should have those around late September.
id stay away from ventures then....they BLAST on long WB and snap into powerslides at will. It was a "for science" steup at times i forgot i wasnt skating indies...air dropping off the top deck instantly ZOOMING and you barely touch tail in the flow section and you just go flying.
Please don't call these 'shorter wheelbases' when an 8.25" is still 14.2" though.... I mean, it's no 15" wheelbase, but pretty much no deck even has that unless you really go up in width (8.75", 9" etc.). I'd wish the 8.25" had a 14" or even 13.5" wheelbase, not even kidding. 14.25" is pretty much already a standard, which I wouldn't refer to as 'short'.
@@timburrow2996 Not really, as I am 6ft1 actually. I just like a shorter wheelbase for how it allows a less wide positioning of both feet on the board.
True, the 8.5 and 8.25 are around an average wheelbase. Def not long. 14.1 on the 8" is pretty short (IMO). It's those wider sizes: the 8.8 and 9 that rarely have WB under 14.5. Appreciate the feedback! I'll pass it along. -RW

@@NHSSkateDirect These recommendations are very helpful. Thanks a bunch!
Such a great series! Not stumpy at all!
Huge fan of the Creature Stump decks. It's all I ride now, I've had 3 in a row. I personally can tell a huge difference with the short wheelbase
Rad! Glad you like them too. Wheelbase is a one of those things where a little change makes a big difference in the overall geometry.
14.5 and smaller. 14.25 is the goldilocks zone but 14 even is pretty darn fun.
I ride a 8.5, 14 3/8wb, mellow kicks, 6.6 tail with indy forged. I wonder how much the shorter tail/wheelbase would help, feels heavy sometimes.. might have to try one of these out 👍
You have the Forged hollows?
@@pauliewalnuts5241 yes
@@isaaclapierre4097 how do you like them
@@pauliewalnuts5241 I like em a lot, the weight is nice. It changes the pop a bit and depending the setup can be good or bad.
I used to have both standard plates and forged and would switch em out depending the setup but I threw away my standard plates :(
Some 80s shapes with shorter wheelbases would be so cool!
the angle of the nose also changes when thinking of length of nose and tail!
I really wanna try the 8.8 out.
I love boards with a longer wheelbase. Since I’m not a technical guy, I want to feel secure when I grind curbs and when I carve.
At the end of the day, it’s about having fun.
Are there any 8.5 or 8.25 deck with a 14wb or less for 5'-0" tall adult riders?
@@NHSSkateDirect awesome, encourage sc to make decks around that width and length with a 15 wheelbase and youll have a customer in me, thats for sure!
You measure it from center of the hole to other center of hole right???
I just ordered a 14wb Salba tiger hand for transitions.. Did I mess up? Thoughts please.
Yo I got the Winkowski creature deck and I was wondering what's the wheelbase on this model?
14,25“ wb on anything above 8,5“ feel great for me personally. Big feet require me to ride bigger boards, and I haven’t felt so comfy on a board since the 9“ Eric Dressen Rose cross board with 14,25“wb. If I can get my hands on some Creature Stomps in Europe - I will!
Also:
MAKE MORE WINKOWSKI DECKS SO EVERYONE CAN GET SOME 😅
@ghostdancing when it reads in deck specs that WB is for example 14,25“, it means from inner bolt hole to inner bolt hole.
Can you put OJ 60s on this 9in creature deck and still feel the benefit of shorter wheel base?
I definitely have preference, But I’ll ride anything. That’s what makes you a good driver, right? You can deal with different setups.
There's definitely some learning involved in trying new things.
i mean yeah but often the park/transition will come to BITE you from variation to variation in setups...as you do get comfortable/adapt...you often forget what youre riding/how to ride it mid trick. Some setups= more tricks, others=more speed/air.
awesome content brah
Thx!
Imma short asian guy who wants to ride big boards so 9.1inch deck wit 13.875 wheel base and 9.75 deck with 14.125 are quite good for me🥳
Good to know. Thanks for sharing those dimensions. I'll pass them along.
I ride an 8.5 with a 14 3/8 wheelbase. Length 32 or above
Sick. Thanks for sharing!
What setup would you recommend to an old ass man(me) with weak legs that's trying to make ollies as easy as possible? Short board, 14.25 WB that's as light as possible ...maybe?
Is the creature stubs and the santa cruz boat the same shape? Or does one have a different taper then the other?
i like 15, tried a 9 stump and it's nice too , imo 15 gives me more leverage and I'm 6 ft
The 149 indipendet truck are ideal for these boars ?
Yea for a 8.5 deck
I'm tossed between wb big time. I feel like I want a wider stance so my feet can move around comfortably but I want it to flip easy. Maybe I need a thinner board long wb @NHS Skate Direct
What kind of a board do I need to skate like Ron??!!
Would 149 indys work well with the 8.51 stump?
Yes. Perfect fit.
Those Indys Whalen is riding are looking a lot like the old Indy stage 3’s 👀
They're the new(ish) Indy mids.
@@NHSSkateDirect Yea he mentioned in the video it's just the hangers are looking sleeker. Either way Ron rules and I always enjoy these videos he does!
Thank you
Yeah I'm not even 5'7, so I was always wondering if I could get something that would fit my stance width...

Never really considered wheel base till I Bought the stumps deck
I remember getting a deck when I was a kid and Couldn't figure out why it ollied different. Wheelbase+tail length make such a difference.
I love the stumps
Same!
Our micros have 11" wb, minis, 13" and mid completes are 13.5. www.nhsfunfactory.com/skate/complete-skateboards
Also, are you measure from the holes in the deck?
8.25 deck on 31.625 lenght and 14.1 wheelbase please.
Here's one I found online: www.focusmadison.com/products/santa-cruz-transcend-stack-dot-vx-skateboard-deck-8-8?variant=39890852905119
With the pandemic and not being able to produce enough decks for the demand of skateboarding lately we aren't able to make as many special constructions like VX and everslick as we'd like.
I'm actually about to ride that deck too. VX rules.
I have creature 8 deck that has a 13inch wheelbase and 30,5 length.
It’s the best board ever cos I’m 5’4

8.25 with 14” WB is what we need
Seems like a popular request.
Santa Cruz Delfino Tarot VX Deck 8.25in x 31.60in
It has a 14" wheelbase.
We should have those around late September.
Creature 4 life
Should make more 13in wheel base 8.5
14.375 to 14.5 is my sweet spot
Speaking of wheelbase. I haven't been able to find an 8.25 under or 14 inches in wheelbase
The shortest we have coming out soon is the Santa Cruz Delfino Tarot VX Deck 8.25in x 31.60in.
It has a 14" wheelbase.
We should have those around late September.
@@NHSSkateDirect Thanks guys :)
I'm a old new skater , and dropping in with a 14.5 wb is scary
id stay away from ventures then....they BLAST on long WB and snap into powerslides at will. It was a "for science" steup at times i forgot i wasnt skating indies...air dropping off the top deck instantly ZOOMING and you barely touch tail in the flow section and you just go flying.
Do twin tails

More important than width is wheelbase
I think so too. Or at least as important.
wheelbase is more important! i can skate any deck with but i cant skate longer than 14" and still keep all my tricks!

We got some smaller cruisers as well. Right now the smallest are 8.4in x 29.4in. nhsfunfactory.com/collections/skate-cruisers-longboards
@@NHSSkateDirect thanks, im liking the look of it too
I also prefer the chode boards
Please don't call these 'shorter wheelbases' when an 8.25" is still 14.2" though.... I mean, it's no 15" wheelbase, but pretty much no deck even has that unless you really go up in width (8.75", 9" etc.). I'd wish the 8.25" had a 14" or even 13.5" wheelbase, not even kidding. 14.25" is pretty much already a standard, which I wouldn't refer to as 'short'.
U must be the "Stump" then if you need a 13.5 wheelbase for your 8.25 LOL
@@timburrow2996 Not really, as I am 6ft1 actually. I just like a shorter wheelbase for how it allows a less wide positioning of both feet on the board.
True, the 8.5 and 8.25 are around an average wheelbase. Def not long. 14.1 on the 8" is pretty short (IMO). It's those wider sizes: the 8.8 and 9 that rarely have WB under 14.5.
Appreciate the feedback! I'll pass it along. -RW
