The sad mentality behind "HD Remakes" and such is the idea that quality comes exclusively from how modern the technology behind it is. It's the driving principle behind the pop-culture mindset. Things aren't good because they're good; they're good because they're new.

“Nerrel, age 57” got me pretty good.
I dunno what it is. It’s just clever. You introduce shit and make a underplayed joke out of it only like a minute later as casually as if it was a reference to a topical meme.
It’s funny but it’s also like, entertaining to make that connection, because it’s simultaneously a joke about the previous bit. Gives you more to laugh at.

my biggest issue with that game is the complete lack of options to mark the map, which is a huge deal considering how many islands you can't access until you get the right item. with how huge the map is, there's no way you can be expected to remember all the islands you've visited but couldn't do anything with yet, it makes 100% completion, something that i really like to do in zelda games especially, very obnoxious and unenjoyable without using a guide (which ruins the experience for me), holding off on exploration until you have all items (shouldn't need to explain why that's bad), or just writing down notes on the islands outside the game, which is the best solution i can think of but still shouldn't be required in the first place
beyond that, my other issue is the lack of dungeons, as well as the dungeons themselves. not counting the forsaken fortress because it's just an extended stealth section, there are only 5 real dungeons in the game. out of those, i can only say i genuinely enjoyed 2 of them, the tower of the gods and the wind temple. the earth temple was generally uninteresting, dragon roost was fun solely because of the location and visuals, and i really don't like the forbidden woods.

Sword of Mana is a perfectly fine name, they should've kept it for all future releases, some people probably won't understand why there's a game called "Final Fantasy" in a "Mana" compilation if they're not big fans of the serie (because let's be fair, most people only know Secret of Mana and don't really care for the other games, especially since they weren't big hits in the West or weren't even released).

The Secret of Mana remake music honestly reminds me of the NES MegaMan remakes for PlayStation. Loud guitar, metal-inspired, occasionally techno beats, it couldn’t decide what it wanted to be. Unlike the sublimely catchy NES music, Capcom opted for “CD” audio, which meant anything goes except chiptune. A parallel would be how most 32/64-bit era games wanted to be ugly 3D polygonal games that haven’t ages well, simply because it was new.

What you kids don't understand - was this was the FIRST TIME any of us kids saw a co-op JRPG. It was SUCH an amazing game, not JUST because of the story, the wonderful music and gameplay - but the MEMORIES!! I remember playing it with my brother and beating the crap out of it. WE did it.
It's a MASTERPEICE of it's time and deserves whatever recognition it gets. Play it /w a friend.

You did a fantastic job!! I grew with Secret of Mana, I have a special nostalgic bond with the game. I tried to play SoM2 with English patch on emulator but it kept crashing. I'm excited to play it legally and now finally with English official translation. I don't have a switch yet, but that didn't stopped me to preorder the physical release. Hopefully I can buy a switch later this year to play these 3 fantastic games. Thanks for this video!!

  • @MrGiftedGamer
    @MrGiftedGamer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Perfectly timed video man, I just bought a Switch and was most excited to play these. Got the physical release for $33, but after owning a Switch for a few days I'd almost rather it digitally. But $40 for no background options is a bit annoying.
Thanks for such a descriptive video about this collection and the series. I still really want to play these games. So not entirely sure what to do now lol, since an emulator is a bit annoying to set up especially for co-op for me. Maybe I'll get it on real hardware lol 😅

I never realized how much Secret of Mana DNA Crosscode had until rewatching this video.
You should give it a shot sometime. Its extremely long and the dungeons are long & tough. It may overstay its welcome, but it has an amazing amount of charm. The gameplay is also pretty good. Definitely an indie that deserved the attention it got.

"Just one fan did a better job than an entire team"
That seems to be the case with a lot of video games. Likely because fans care about the right things and they're passionate about what they're doing
These kinds of people should seriously be considered for hiring; it'd be nice for them to be compensated for their work rather than have it taken down or even get strikes
The people who are working on Silent Hill Enhanced are clearly fans who love the game; they want to perserve the good things about the original and hopefully make it better for new players

Seiken Densetsu 3 was one of my favorite childhood games, played on an emulator. Never got to experience the story though, because I played it before fan translations came out and never came back to it. I've been waiting to play it for a while, but there's so many other games coming out around the same time that I have no free time left...

You seem to have quite the expertise when it comes to comparing the original release of a game, to a rerelease, and also to a remake. I'd be interested to see you tackle other games, like Metroid:Zero Mission, the Link's Awakening remake, and other like it. Regardless, keep up the great analyses, I enjoy them every time you upload them.
