With storm Agnes about to hit the Lake District, I took my trusted Hilleberg Soulo up into the fells.
Studying my location I should of been sheltered from the worst of the wind, this wasn't the case.
Why not sit down, buckle up and come along for the ride !!!!

"Stupidly dangerous" - I do not remember reading about that concept when learning about risk management in the wild😂 However, you made the right call in bailing out when you were up at the lake. Seeing the wind gusts on the water tells me it was rough and that pitching would have been quite an "experience". Sometimes wisdom and experience is to know when to bail out - the mountains will be there tomorrow for us! On a different note - this kind of weather is the reason why I always have a wind bag/emergency shelter with me. If the worst happens I put myself into the bag, zip up, take on as many clothes as possible, get into the sleeping bag and weather out the storm! Anyway, new trips await you and the Soulo soon Alan! the wind wasnt to bad on the way up, thought bid get out the wind when imwas up there but it was even worse, theres no way I would of got the tent pitched, had in the back of my mind I might have to bail and it was defo the right decision

Wild! Correct decision in bailing, getting a tent up in those conditions would have been really challenging. A good video showing how bad things can get.
Yeah I think so, o honestly think I could have got it pitch but it would have been a stupid decision. I always say if your asking the question if you should bail then the answer is normally yes 😂

Yep I always check the weather as well, unsure why as the beggar is normally never right lol. Assuming you parked at Mungrisdale and your weather was a tad different to the weather I got last time I was there, although, the weather did not look too bad as you walked through the valley towards Scales Tarn. That soon changed when you actually got to Scales Tarn mind and you made the right call on going back to the van albeit a walk back I did not envy you in those conditions. Cheers Alan
Hiya mate I parked at the back of the white horse inn at scales, if you drive down the back of the carpark to the end of the lane there’s enough parking for 4/5 cars and then it’s a straight path upto the col between souther fell and scales fell
Definitely the right decision to come back down, I thought I’d be sheltered there but the wind was getting funnelled straight into the tarn so was actually worse lol
Anyway gives me an excuse to go back again 😂
Ha that was nuts, shame you couldn't get any shelter from the wind. Miss my soulo, don't feel safe like I used to lol. Enjoyed this crazy little adventure but it did make sense to bale, that was proper rough fair play. Look forward to your next camp. Hopefully you will get the tent up in the next one ohh Yeahh
Yo Dai, yeah defo the right choice to bail but still slightly gutted, did you sell your Soulo ? How much did you get for it ?? Definitely should have kept it mate even if it’s sat in the loft lol it’s always there then
@@54DegreesNorth yeah I sold it on ebay for 750 mate. I needed money to help fund my camper conversion cause it was draining my money. My decathlon tent I have now should take some punishment. But next year I will buy a new tent. Not sure what yet though
Yep, you were right to get out of there Alan, that would destroy any tent, I pitched in a very similar tarn which I thought had cover, the wind just whipped around and wiped out my helm compact, badly bending the main pole, luckily I still had plenty of light and got off, you definitely made the right call, atb Mick 👍

OMG good call Alan, don't fight mother nature instead respect her and that place will be there for the next time you go. Any advice anyone one on the Hyena 2 tent for my first tent to go wild camping, just a bit bothered about the weight of 3kg
Hiya mate, yeah I think it was the right call to, as for the tent I’ve not seen it before, but the only way you get the weight down is by going up in price so it’s a bit of a trade off really
