I think that was a leftover from Jeff Lindsay's original Darkly Dreaming Dexter book which the first season was partly based on. The later seasons did their own thing.

@@seanyonthemic i respectfully disagree. The final book isn't what i wanted it to be, but the actual ending was beautifully written. That last chapter in particular is fantastic and the final sentence haunts me to this day. Whereas the final chapter of the show is just terrible writing.

Dexter never lost his cool in first season even after so much mocking by doakes. He was emotionless and faking everything but you can see his character became more vulnerable in later seasons.
Just re-watched the first four seasons and I think what I love most is the dark comedy, which is something that seemed to be sorely missing from the latter seasons. It's pretty impressive how this show is able to switch gears from hilarious to dramatic to terrifying in only a few seconds.

One of the main differences from the books to show is that Dexter actually trains Astor and Cody to also be killers. They both display the tendencies that Dexter did that set him on his path. Cody is more the killer and Astor is his cover. Also in the books Laguerta dies in the first book, unlike the show where she dies in one of the final seasons.

The fourth season should be a blast because of the story alone. The whole "urban legend or not" about the big bad of the season. Dexter, Monk and Psych still get my love to this day. Just great shows!
The first time i experienced Dexter, I couldn't keep up with the story line in Season 1 until things connected later on in the show. I wish season 1 was spread across 18 or so episodes to soak in the "past" of Dexter
There are some actors that after playing a role, you just don’t see the actor anymore, every time you see them, you see the character. Like for me there is no Michael C Hall. There’s only Dexter! Another one for me is Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man. Or Bryan Cranston as Walter White.
My favorite and in my opinion the best season. I got hooked pretty immediately after watching the first two to four episodes. The introduction of Dexter and all the other characters, the flashbacks, the plot, the Ice Truck Killer, the showcasing of the setting Miami done beautifully etc. This season will always be my favorite. I'm excited for the reboot.
After the first episode I was hooked too. One of my favorite aspects of the show is dexter’s Inter dialogue.With the simplicity of season one his Internal commentary was really a major part of the show. I also enjoyed the vulnerability and innocence of Deb and Rita in the first season. 1 and 2 are by far my favorite seasons.
They shouldn’t have killed Brian so soon. They should’ve let him escape in season 1. He was the only character bar Debra that could seriously affect Dexter’s psyche.

See I do agree that theres a big step off after the first 4, BUUUT I dont think season 5 is all that bad at all and actually a strong season in many ways it just had the horrible task of following up season 4 which was always gonna be hard to do, season 6 I thought was a weak season... 7 was a step in the right direction again (although still flawed) and then season 8 was awful.

Loved this review and that you talked about how the people he kills every week helps him with whatever he is dealing with in his personal life. I feel this theme is bigger in the series as each big killer shows him a different path he could have gone down. The ice trucker killer is who he would have been without Harry's code.

Also, dexter is probably is in top 5 - if not in top 3 :) I did not watch it for a long time. Jennifer Carpenter’s performance in the penultimate season was some of the best acting I’ve seen - ever.

My husband suggested this after hearing about it from work. We started the first season and the moment we saw the body in the pool drained dry...we were in. We were in DEEP. We binged the next four seasons in maybe 3 to 4 weeks and were ready to go when Season 5 started on time. I will still watch this show at least once a year. Its just so damn good and no matter how many times I watch it, I never get bored. Season 1 my second favorite season. Yes second. We could probably guess what season is going to be first.

Deb was honestly the first character I ever truly related to. The mouth of a sailor mixed with serious men issues. Glad I waited to watch this until there were a couple more videos up.
With the announcement of dexter returning I decided to check out the show. Finished season 1 today and loved it. Gonna binge the rest over the next few weeks. I kinda did see the reveal of the ice truck killer coming but it was still surprising.
I’m looking forward to Season 4 review. In my opinion it’s the greatest season but it can also rival season 2. Another one though is season 8. I wanna see you tear the heart out of that season.
I loved Dexter!! Such a good show! I was hooked after the Pilot. Season 4 is amazing, and I think the best season. "Hello, Dexter Morgan" is a great episode. I hated the series finale though. Hated it w/a passion. Can't wait to hear what you thought of it.
On a rewatch of the season the one thing I will say about it is how the fuck could deb not notice the giant freezer in her boyfriend's apartment. Probably plenty of explanations for it (maybe) but that fact that they didnt even mention it was super weird on a rewatch.
This might be controversial but season 1 of Dexter is the best season. I love it. I always rewatch it once or so a year cuz I like it that much(the whole show too).
@templarroystonofvasey I think it's the best because it's really encapsulating of the narrative that he's a monster. He enjoys making bad people suffer then in the later seasons they try to give him a conscious and suddenly give him emotions. Idk it just didn't work for me plus they totally changed the style/vibe of how they filmed him and his dark passenger during the kills.

My only complaint with Season 1 was that I wish there was one entire episode that focused mainly on Dexter and Brian talking to each other. There are 2 very short scenes together. When he rescues Deb, and when he kills Brian.
Having watched the first 4 seasons many times, season 1 is the best. All the flashbacks, Harry's code, discovery and learning about why Dexter is the way he is was awesome. Then you step back and think "f-me, why the hell am I empathising and rooting for a serial killer". Seems to me as each season progresses, drama is given more and more priority along with ever increasing "convenient cheese" so Dexter continues to "get away with it", through sheer stupidity of others and blind luck, rather than the cold, calculating and matriculate planning that allowed Dexter to do what he does undetected. I'm sure most will place a balance of drama, "convenient cheese" and calculated killer (or lack there of) by giving Season 4 the biggest thumbs up, just I can't forgive the cheese because I just don't rate the drama as much as others do.
The opening for the review was great. Made me remember watching the first episode.😂 The first 5 seasons were great, but the 6th season was pretty hard to get through, and I stopped watching somewhere early in season 7. Season 6 didn't really connect well to the previous seasons and the main conflict wasn't memorable like Dexter's brother in the first season or the trinity killer in 4.

So I just watched Season 1 for the first time. Love it overall, But I can't be the only one that predicted "Rudy" as being the killer? Maybe not from first scene, but the more I saw of him the more I thought he was just off and thought, yeah there's probably gonna be a twist that hes the killer. Then him being Dexter's brother, with such a connection they had wasn't that surprising either.
Dexter is awesome. If you have the time it’s very easy to get into, I think I binge watch all the seasons with a couple weeks. I did that with The Strain too but I think the strain really depends on your taste. The writing on Dexter is top notch.
Initially, I checked season one of Dexter out of our local library and stopped watching after a few episodes: I just couldn't "get into" the bright sunny Miami atmosphere, that didn't quite come across as...serial killer-y. Quite some time later, I decided to give it a second chance...and am very glad I did. Own it all on DVD, love the character development over the show's run.
Did I miss something or did you not even really talk about DOAKES!? He was such a hilarious, intense, entertaining, badass character that future seasons really missed.
I don't commit the series like I just to. Watch them for a bit then stop and get back to them at a later time but this was one of a few I had to watch when each new episode came out. Will have to revisit it soon now I know it's on Netflix

For the most part. I feel like the whole series is really good. There's far more going for it than there are negatives. And the greatness of the first 4 or 5 seasons carries the show forward.
One neat picking criticism of your review, is the fact that you said: “His father gave him this code to go after Killers, Pedophiles, Rapist.” That is actually inaccurate, the code of Harry was very specific about the people it included at start, but as the time went on, Dexter himself evolved the Code, to include other people in it. He himself even said it so a lot of time, like at the end of season 2 he said “the code is mine now, and mine alone” and he understood that his relationships are more than just disguises. Or when he killed Nathan Marten in Season 3, the pedophile who took pictures from Astor, he didn’t fit the code but when he killed him he said “Maybe there’s a world where my code could include people like you, and in that world I get to decide who’s gets to live”. I apologize, but as a Dexter super fan I just had to criticize that...

IMO they should have kept Dexter emotionally empty. Making his character more human and emotional in later seasons watered him down.
I so agreed with this. He became so ordinarily boring in the later seasons. It was fun to see him try to look normal. That was the best part.

With the announcement of dexter returning I decided to check out the show. Finished season 1 today and loved it. Gonna binge the rest over the next few weeks. I kinda did see the reveal of the ice truck killer coming but it was still surprising.
Liked and subbed just for the intro. This is my favorite season with favorite villain.

I’m looking forward to Season 4 review. In my opinion it’s the greatest season but it can also rival season 2. Another one though is season 8. I wanna see you tear the heart out of that season.
I loved Dexter!! Such a good show! I was hooked after the Pilot. Season 4 is amazing, and I think the best season. "Hello, Dexter Morgan" is a great episode. I hated the series finale though. Hated it w/a passion. Can't wait to hear what you thought of it.
On a rewatch of the season the one thing I will say about it is how the fuck could deb not notice the giant freezer in her boyfriend's apartment. Probably plenty of explanations for it (maybe) but that fact that they didnt even mention it was super weird on a rewatch.

This might be controversial but season 1 of Dexter is the best season. I love it. I always rewatch it once or so a year cuz I like it that much(the whole show too).

@templarroystonofvasey I think it's the best because it's really encapsulating of the narrative that he's a monster. He enjoys making bad people suffer then in the later seasons they try to give him a conscious and suddenly give him emotions. Idk it just didn't work for me plus they totally changed the style/vibe of how they filmed him and his dark passenger during the kills.
@@AnimeBae370Gotta say I really enjoyed the concept of the Dark passenger as well. It's clearer in the Dexter books this is a demonic entity. I do remember later seasons more and more logic seemed to get thrown out the window. I didn't really pick-up on Dexter developing more emotionally. I'll look out for it during the next re-watch. Thnx.

Daimon Atkins it got an “emergence” again when it was streamed popularly on Netflix earlier this year :).
I was hooked by the end of the 1st episode too when it was on Showtime watched it every week me & my roomate never missed an episode.

Seasons 1,2 and 4 are the best, but season 5 is very under appreciated.
My only complaint with Season 1 was that I wish there was one entire episode that focused mainly on Dexter and Brian talking to each other. There are 2 very short scenes together. When he rescues Deb, and when he kills Brian.
What a rollercoaster of a series quality wise. However, still a great show when it’s at its best.
Having watched the first 4 seasons many times, season 1 is the best. All the flashbacks, Harry's code, discovery and learning about why Dexter is the way he is was awesome. Then you step back and think "f-me, why the hell am I empathising and rooting for a serial killer".
Seems to me as each season progresses, drama is given more and more priority along with ever increasing "convenient cheese" so Dexter continues to "get away with it", through sheer stupidity of others and blind luck, rather than the cold, calculating and matriculate planning that allowed Dexter to do what he does undetected.
I'm sure most will place a balance of drama, "convenient cheese" and calculated killer (or lack there of) by giving Season 4 the biggest thumbs up, just I can't forgive the cheese because I just don't rate the drama as much as others do.
There are some shows that hold a special place in my heart and Dexter will always be one of them!!!

The first 5 seasons were great, but the 6th
season was pretty hard to get through, and I stopped watching somewhere early in season 7. Season 6 didn't really connect well to the previous seasons and the main conflict wasn't memorable like Dexter's brother in the first season or the trinity killer in 4.

But I can't be the only one that predicted "Rudy" as being the killer?
Maybe not from first scene, but the more I saw of him the more I thought he was just off and thought, yeah there's probably gonna be a twist that hes the killer.
Then him being Dexter's brother, with such a connection they had wasn't that surprising either.
My dad has the entire series on DVD. I've tried to watch the show but can't fully commit to it.

Dexter is awesome. If you have the time it’s very easy to get into, I think I binge watch all the seasons with a couple weeks. I did that with The Strain too but I think the strain really depends on your taste. The writing on Dexter is top notch.
Initially, I checked season one of Dexter out of our local library and stopped watching after a few episodes: I just couldn't "get into" the bright sunny Miami atmosphere, that didn't quite come across as...serial killer-y. Quite some time later, I decided to give it a second chance...and am very glad I did. Own it all on DVD, love the character development over the show's run.
Did I miss something or did you not even really talk about DOAKES!? He was such a hilarious, intense, entertaining, badass character that future seasons really missed.
A large portion of my S2 review will be on Doakes. Didnt want to repeat myself and be redundant.

I don't commit the series like I just to. Watch them for a bit then stop and get back to them at a later time but this was one of a few I had to watch when each new episode came out. Will have to revisit it soon now I know it's on Netflix

For the most part. I feel like the whole series is really good. There's far more going for it than there are negatives. And the greatness of the first 4 or 5 seasons carries the show forward.

First season was good but it got worse the later it came along.
One neat picking criticism of your review, is the fact that you said: “His father gave him this code to go after Killers, Pedophiles, Rapist.” That is actually inaccurate, the code of Harry was very specific about the people it included at start, but as the time went on, Dexter himself evolved the Code, to include other people in it. He himself even said it so a lot of time, like at the end of season 2 he said “the code is mine now, and mine alone” and he understood that his relationships are more than just disguises. Or when he killed Nathan Marten in Season 3, the pedophile who took pictures from Astor, he didn’t fit the code but when he killed him he said “Maybe there’s a world where my code could include people like you, and in that world I get to decide who’s gets to live”.
I apologize, but as a Dexter super fan I just had to criticize that...
