Better call Saul. S4 finale, winner. It’s my favourite season finale ever. There are better series finales but I don’t like counting those on the same list
John Lithgow brought this show to a new level. He's always been a standout actor and exceeds expectations in everything he's been in but he plays one hell of a bone chilling bad guy. I absolutely adore him
One of my favorite seasons of television ever. The Thanksgiving scene alone was one of the most tense, uncomfortable sequences I have ever witnessed. And that ending...I stared dumbfounded at the screen for almost a full minute when the credits rolled.
Something I've always noticed with this season is every kill done by Dexter seems to have a consequence. I don't know if it was meant that way or not. But Something bad always happens after every kill and I've always thought it was some kind of message. Might just be me though lol. Great review.
9:37 I always found Quinn's reasons for suspecting Dexter stupid. "He doesn't want anything to keep quiet about me taking money from a crime scene so there's something strange about him." At least with Doakes he could tell Dexter was off having seen killers like him in both the Special Forces and as a cop, found out Dexter knew that Brian had been the one to try to kill Batista and kept it from Miami Metro, Dexter getting excited at murder scenes and too into describing them, he looked into Dexter's past and found out about Harry's suicide and Matthews covering it up and so on.
After seeing John Lithgow in movies such as “Blow Out”, Ricochet, Cliffhanger and Raising Cain, I definitely knew that he was going to be the next perfect adversary to Dexter, since his brother Brian. John Lithgow was always great at playing very sinister villains.
16:30 you didn’t mention the fact how ridiculous it was that Arthur managed to steal a visitors badge and then proceeded to look in the evidence room for a minute without ANYBODY saying anything but that could be a nitpick I don’t think so though because it’s a pretty important plot point
Hungry Man is one of my favorite episodes of TV, definitely my favorite of the whole show. Just a creepy descent into the totally disturbed and messed up Mitchell family. The ending payoff where everything goes to shit was just perfect acting from Hall and Lithgow.
16:59 Yeah I get Arthur lured him to the arcade by making Dexter think he was there to kidnap and bury another kid after Dexter saved the previous boy interrupting Arthur's cycle but Dexter not keeping an eye to see if anyone's following him made no sense.
Yeah.... that’s one of the things I thought was lazy writing. Dexter is so meticulous and methodical.....BUT all of a sudden he’s none of these. Doesn’t make sense that in earlier seasons he’d do his “homework”, bide his time, plan every move out and have multiple exits ready in case to bail, etc. Also, the Dex has trouble with romantic relationships but all of a sudden becomes a total simp in the last season. I mean come on, man!
@@darkdemonqueen Didn't help that Arthur drove a big van that'd be easy to spot. And as for Hannah in the last 2 seasons she only existed because Scott Buck, the producer of Seasons 5-8 had a boner for her actress.
I just finished rewatching this season (after watching live back in the day) and my biggest “WTF Dexter” moment has to be the part in the finale where he finally gets Trinity, after taking that guy’s side-view mirror off… and instead of just driving Arthur to the kill-room using Arthur’s van… he deals with the cops. Idiotic, and Harry lets him know it. As a consequence, spoiler spoiler spoiler. That said, the complete lapse of reason did help to illuminate and complement other bad decisions by Dexter, e.g. “that scene” in the New Blood finale. Dexter’s been a fuck-up since at least S3. S1 is the only one where he pulled it all off. I don’t want to call it “idiot plot” when Dexter messes up, it’s not like what he’s doing is easy.
I love the bathroom scene in the Road Kill episode where Trinity explains his origin story in the bathroom with Dexter. Super creepy phenomenal acting by John Lithgow.
5:04 At first you think he's a guy obsessively compelled to re enact the death of his family then it later turns out that him wanting to kill himself wasn't guilt for his murders but self pity about being responsible for the deaths of his mother and sister and killing his abusive father. With the family man, deacon and home builder all being acts so no one will suspect him of being a serial killer.
Problem with shows like Dexter is there is always that one antagonist that comes along before the end of the show that none of the others will come close to measuring up to. Cracked me up how throughout Season 8 we keep hearing Dexter monologue about Saxxon like he’s the most dangerous killer he ever faced 😂😂😂
Trinity would beat Saxon to death with a hammer without breaking a sweat. Daniel Vogel, Oliver Saxon whatever you want to call him was just a mama's boy who killed his brother to get attention from his mother, sawed people's brains to do the same as an adult then killed her when she chose Dexter over him.
This season was a really intense season from the jump since the killer was established. All around solid performances from most of the cast as well and the writing was also on point. The only other show that had as great as a season 4 if not better was breaking bad. But yes, this is my favorite season.
I truly enjoyed this easy and it is probably my favorite of the series. I feel like 1, 2, 4, and 5 are the most solid and the ones I don't typically get tired of and can binge all the time. The end was unfortunately spoiled for me, but seeing my husband's face when we watched it was pretty fun, lol. We were lucky that we got into Dexter after season 5 so we were binging the summer before Season 6 started. We didn't have to wait, but I can imagine how agonizing that was. Also, gotta love that you are encouraging work truancy, haha. I do think my husband and I played hookie to finish this season if I'm not mistaken. Or I did. One of us for sure called out because we finished this at 3am. I remember that.
This is easily dexter best season and one of the best seasons of tv. The way it explored how dexter addiction to killing will be his down fall. Trinity being the dark mirror of dexter. The ending with Rita dying was a tragic way to end the season.
Awesome review! This was by far the best season for me . The ending when I first saw it ( 2020 lockdown ) left my mouth wide open and I was so happy I did not have to wait to see how that played out , because if I did …. I would be like you were , anxious 😬!!! Also happy to finally see this review I was waiting for a notification for it lol
I’m SO glad I was not spoiled by the ending. My buddy had finished it a little bit before me and let me watch it blind, and I was absolutely and completely shocked. It’s one of the best finales in all of TV.
While this is the best season of dexter, I have to say much like you I can't believe that Dexter allowed himself to be followed and not have it for a purpose of some kind. And the deb issues well for me they get worse over time but in season 4 least of my issues. And that ending is cheif's kiss!
Definitely one of the greatest tv seasons in tv history season 4 of “Dexter” John Lithgow as Trinity -Arthur Miller was a master stroke having him as the villain, he was superb in movies like “Blow out” “Raising in Cain” & “Cliffhanger” as the bad guy but in “Dexter” he was the devil in disguise. My all fav scene in the series “Hello Dexter Morgan” in the police station, John Lithgow was made to look 8 ft tall & a beast, DAMN great scene & just when things were back to normal in Dexter’s life towards the end of the season, then the final scene WTF 😳😱🤬
Totally the best season, just rewatched… they should’ve ended it here, even tho season 5 was good, I liked season 5 but omg when I saw the finale when it aired, I was shocked and gutted!!
I'm gonna say it...I think season 4 is kind of over-rated. I like season 5 better. For one think, I think Trinity's daughter is a plot contrivance that does not work. - Where does she come from? Was Trinity a family man once before? Why does he hate her so much? She is an aspect of Trinity's personality that is never explained and just comes out of no where. - Why does she kill Lundy? There are 1,000s of women with daddy issues that don't try to get attention by killing someone. It makes no sense.
Arthur mentions to Dexter that before he met and married Sally he was with a woman called Lorraine Hill who he had Christine with but the relationship fell apart. I think he hated her because her existence threatened the "perfect family man" cover he had to hide him being a serial killer. And she killed Lundy because she was afraid he was getting too close to realising Arthur was Trinity.
@@Xehanort10 I have watched the series twice and somehow I missed that bit of information both times. Thanks. Yeah...I never understood where Christine came from and why. That makes more sense.

After the first season, (which was similar to the fist book)the show stopped following the books and went in its own completely different direction. I recommend reading all 8 Dexter books.
The X-Files term was actually called “Monster of the Week” episodes, and the X-Files being a supernatural show, the term works. But since Dexter deals exclusively with human monsters, probably “Freak of the Week” is the better phrasing for this show.

When I saw Rita in that bathtub, it made me sick to my stomach. That nasty old man got in the bath with her 😢
Dexter: New Blood is coming out in November and I’m excited to see it
Pretty sure Trinity is the only killer thatbhas his own original theme music always make this comparison if dexter is batman Trinity is his Joker
"Now It's Over"
I did enjoy that jokey tired intro they did for episode one, though I'm glad it was just a one off.
