  • I don't know what I'm doing. That fact starts to become apparent in this episode. Up until space science I could see the path forward but from here I can see only weeds. From here it's baby steps and cockups.

    Ah! the beauty of the first accidental walk out of the platform, the: Oh! No! come back! where are you going!!!!
    Great content as always. Thanks for the hard work with those timelapses.
    Tips spoiler free (no mention to anything you don't have unlocked) ^^:
    - In case you missed it, with your first rocket you got a message that it found a cache with items in the map (coordinates in the informatron, last section "Exploration journey"), it contains a railgun with ammo which will trivialize clean territory of biters. It contains requester chests too. You got a few new weapons in orbit too which are a bit overpower until behemoth biters.
    - If I'm correct, the steam turbines have a max effective temperature of 415 degrees, so they give you the same energy with 5k degrees steam or 500 degrees steam. You can use the electric boilers with 500 degree steam and produce it faster.
    - You can move to Nauvis orbit and surface in satellite view from the icon at the bottom left of the screen while in satellite view. You can add pins to fast movent to certain positions too. To enter and exit satellite view you can pulse "N". You don't need radars to see in satellite view. In satellite view you can plant ghosts and modify recipes in buildings or combinators configuration etc... so if you have robots you don't need to go to orbit to manage it.
    - You don't need to turn the barrels back to Nauvis, you can break them back into steel plates with the recicler, without material loss, and use them for scafolding, belts or whatever is needed.
    - You can not send everything with delivery cannons, only base materials, and you need to consume delivery capsules for that. It is cheaper than cargo rockets at the beginning, but you will need a lot of intermediate and finished products in orbit which need to be sent by cargo rocket, so you will have to balance it.
    - If you want to see a great idea about how to set an easy and flexible automated space bus based on cargo rockets, you can take a look at this 8 min video from Laurence plays where he explains how to build it, it is the best idea I found about how to send all needed materials to orbit at the beginning and mid game in space.

    - I will love to have that monitoring mod too, but the closest thing I found is an ingame graph with lights. Again, Laurence plays has a video about one way to do it:

      Just to add on here about the power issues because the mechanic is buried in the tooltips:
      The turbines produce a max 10MW at or above 415C (which is the max temp of heat exchangers). Anything over is lost energy. Condenser turbines on the other hand can be overheated and gain efficiency as they approach 1000C, but lock if they exceed it.
      This modpack also buffs solar significantly.
      Not writing off cannons is good advice too. 50 stacks of water barrels in a cannon is a different material cost than 50 stacks in a rocket.

    And I know you went over that someone in the comments would be like "oh you just need this mod" - but Circuit HUD V2 sounds exactly like what you're describing for tracking signals with a panel in real time. You can do a lot with tracking fluid amounts, power usage (active reactors? active boilers? accumulator charge?), logistics demand vs supply, all sorts of bits like that, and filter it out into sectioned parts of the panel, and hide the panel when you're not trying to monitor or diagnose issues. In the bobs/angels example, alerts for acids/fluids/gasses being too high or too low, alien orb amounts, stone byproducts.. Or a count of MOX, 234, 235 fuel cells in storage.
    It will also help out when you start sending signals from orbit to surface and planet-to-planet. Having the request amounts negative/red vs the supply amounts positive/green as just a quick glance for what is missing and where. Maybe even just as a quality of life bit where you dont have to mouseover a signal from mapview and look at the entire signal at once, but can instead have a combinator giving you the important detail while filtering out all the nitty gritty that went into that -- turn on landfill production to produce salt for more batteries, rather than just seeing the logistic supply of the three separate items and tying it to a speaker when salt or batteries are too low.

    I love the arc the CME makes on the power monitor. It’s a nice bell.

    One thing, you have to use rockets. The (I think they are called delivery cannons) can only transport basic resources like barrels of liquids or uranium 235/238 or iron plates, not science/other stuff.

    • @theotherbigfoot
      @theotherbigfoot  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Now that you mention it, I do remember reading that in the informotron. Good to know that delivery cannons would have been a pointless endeavor. Might come in useful for empty barrels though.

      Someone else mentioned that I should be scrapping the barrels and using the steel on the platform but I'm old school factorio, nothing can be deleted!! If there's a mechanism for re-using the barrels then that's what I'm gonna do.

    • @ashar9545
      @ashar9545 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@theotherbigfoot instead of turning empty barrels into science and space platforms, there's no reason you can't pack them flat to save space shipping them home to be turned right back into barrels. (incidentally, this would also be an example where sending the 5 stacks of steel back via cannon would be more resource efficient than a whole rocket. Cannon automation is in some ways a tougher logistic challenge than rocket automation because cannons don't inherently know when their target is empty.)
      And fear not! there are several puzzles in this modpack where you have to juggle reusable materials in giant loops. Rocket sections and pods are just the start.

    Also Note: I know you don't particularly like Modules.. You may want to reconsider that with this mod for certain things. Trying not to spoil what is to come but just know you'll want to have them at some point most likely because of obvious reasons when you get there.

    • @theotherbigfoot
      @theotherbigfoot  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In vanilla, yes, I don't like them. In big mod sets it's a completely different thing. I made them in every angel and bob factory and I used them all the time. They will get attention.

    For rocket part transport, I found it best that when I go to a new planet, I bring enough stuff to get me back. If I already have rocket transport setup on a different planet, then I just have a rocket setup to deliver rocket parts and rocket fuel to wherever I tell it to. If you treat rockets as trains you have to program yourself, then you are halfway to setting up rockets. The other half is actually programming the stuff.

    • @theotherbigfoot
      @theotherbigfoot  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      There's a part of me that really wants to design a little factory that produces rocket parts and rocket fuel and nothing else. Like, a perfect little square I can drop on any planet I visit.
      I haven't fully decided yet. I may go the logistics route.

    • @UnfortunateWatcher
      @UnfortunateWatcher 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@theotherbigfoot The main issue with that plan is that unless you always go with core mining, there are some planets that are missing resources that you need to build cargo parts. It’s why I suggested the rocket that delivers parts and fuel only. You can hop down to a surface, slap down a landing platform just for taking cargo parts, and never have to worry about it.

      @@theotherbigfoot Also, you are welcome to if you want, to hop into my K2SE run that I still have going on. I haven’t touched it in months, but it still has a working setup for delivery cannons and rockets. It might help you make a decision on what you want to do with your base.

      @@UnfortunateWatcher Thank you for the offer but the mistakes are something I want to make. I'm not going to purposefully do something stupid but if it happens naturally I think that's a good thing. It's important to me that what I put out represents a true journey.
      There's a part of me that thinks I should be ignoring these comments because you guys keep giving me good tips and that kinda pollutes that 'true journey', but, frankly, that isn't going to happen.
      That's kinda why I want to do the little rocket factory thing. It's probably what I would have done if I wasn't on youtube.
