    After so many years, this is still THE best rookie tutorial for iRacing (or for any racing game for that matter)!
    I keep recommending it to all rookies, in particular those who fail to understand the safety rating system.

    I've just started iRacing and I'm not even an oval fan but figured it'd be a good idea to get some experience with it under my belt. I got out of rookie in road and oval in a handful of days just by keeping myself calm and aware, the car pointed forwards and my eyes open. With the rookies it seems easy to get a decent result _just by not crashing_ no matter how slow you are.

    Thanks for these videos, they helped a lot. I got out of rookies in just over 24 hours and 11 races, I'm still no pro or amazing but following your advice of avoiding trouble really worked out well for me.
    The tip of watching replays of incidents is probably the best idea (it'sin one of the parts, to everyone watching this for the first time).

    Scott, if your current job isn't creating training videos (for any business, not just iracing) it should be! My wife and I are both high-level staff in very large companies and so have had to endure countless hours of trainings over the years (and conduct our own trainings as well). Your training style and even the tone and inflections in your voice may be the very best I've ever heard. You are truly outstanding at this and would love to see iracing.com recruit you to do a series of videos for them (paid work of course). Outstanding work, sir!

    I wished every iRacer were FORCED (yes, watch or leave) to watch this video. Here is a little story: a couple of races ago I started first and lead 14 laps (of 19 total) and had to give up one position due to driving mistake by me. So I was chasing the new leader but he got faster, pulled away 3 tenths per lap. After three laps (17 of 19) we came close to the first laper. The laper recognized us and choosed to take a wide approach at the next hairpin to make room for everyone behind him. But the new leader was under pressure due to my closing distance. So, at least that's what I'm thinking, he braked later, couldn't stay on his racing line inside, was carried out wide and hit the laper. Boy, he was raging. Told the rookie just to "fucking" stick to his "fucking" normal racing line and that HE KNOWS how to overtake. The saddest part is, the rookie believed him that he had done something wrong, not the leader. Truth is, he could never done anything right for the leader. Would he stood in racing line he would be flamed for not getting off the racing line. But if the leader had react otherwise instead, he probably would have won! If a car is infront of me in any turn, I don't breake later than usually, hell, I even brake a little bit earlier! I applied my brake very early (one laper and one racing car infront of me should be enough evidence for better slowing down) and could avoid the conflict very easy. I won and the previous leader finish only 5th. Still raging at the rookie. You could blame the rookie, but mistakes are done and then you could blame him just for his presence. That would be wrong. He is there, you cannot do anythin against it. You just can manage the situation. By applying those tips mentioned in this video.

    • @AJZulu
      @AJZulu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's just a no no. AOR.
      Save the money and buy yourself a decent Wheel and pedals combo.

    • @jonneh8317
      @jonneh8317 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ewane As a fellow controller user atm, I do agree with André. Wheels and pedal naturally give you more accurate control over your car.
      That said, oval should not be impossible for you on controller. I am currently in the 1.5k iRating range (not too high, I know) in Class D on controller for oval, a wee bit of practice enables you to nail this.
      Unless, of course; thumb starts shaking like crazy in high pressure situations.

    • @vimfuego2000
      @vimfuego2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ewane Go to the garage and look for the 'steering offset' and 'steering ratio' settings. Reduce the offset setting to zero, and take it for a drive. Adjust that setting until you car goes in a straight line without too much adjustment. If your car is difficult to steer without loss of control, or it seems to react to small adjustments too quickly, make your ratio lower(?) or alternatively, higher if you're having trouble catching slides. ( I can't remember if it's up or down for more or less, but if you hover your mouse over the setting, the tool-tip will tell you all you need to know.)

  • @brothertim1322

    Excellent video for people new to iracing. I was racing in rookies and kept getting tagged by other drivers when I was racing cleanly the entire race. I'd get mad but I never really noticed that I was putting myself into those situations until I watched this series. We can't expect rookies to race door-to-door like professionals, because they aren't. Was racing USA International last night and I took your advice and throttled down when the two cars in front of me started rubbing doors/tires because they looked reckless, and sure enough, they wiped each other out within two laps, but since I had already slowed I was able to easily slip by with no contact, started from the pits and finished 5th. In rookies it seems like it's always better to let faster/aggressive cars past. They will either wreck out, overheat their tires (in which cases you'll probably gain the position back later), or they are simply faster than you and you would've lost the spot anyways, either way you're keeping yourself out of danger.
    tl,dr: great video with tips that work in practice, not just theoretically.

    Good video Scott. I was able to get from rookie to A, both road and oval, but it took me a long time. Now I´m B, both road and oval, because I keep still making the same mistakes you explained. I know I need some practice to be a faster and safer driver, but it´s always good to be reminded about the issues that are killing our safety rate. First we have to be safe. Once we have control, with practice, the speed comes.

    I got quite lucky and managed to get out of rookie oval within 8 races. If you have raw speed you should be fine. I totally agree with you about accident avoidance, but the problem people had (like myself) was that in Rookie, no cautions means checking up results in throwing away your chance at winning the race. It wasn't until I had a B License that I realized winning is big, but a car in one piece can set you up for a win. People just don't check up in rookie because there's no cautions.

    Ok, I'm going to stop you at 2:05 for a minute...what he is saying is true. If you never take responsibility and blame others how will you ever learn from it? I ride motorcycles and one of the things noobs or morons do is blame the idiots car drivers for close calls and mistakes. Yes, they are stupid but at the same time if you don't take responsibility and learn what your actions were leading up to that point you won't be able to avoid a similar incident next time. Just be smart.

    I gave up on this game. I played it for about 3 months. Just as I'd start to get my rating up high enough to move on to other classes I'd get caught up in some idiots crash, or taken out, and watch it plummet. I decided I didn't feel like paying that much money to never get farther in a game that bases that much of your driver rating on other peoples mistakes.

    I wish this stuff was up when I was a rookie.

    Let's evaluate the scenario that usually happens:
    A car spins out and is facing a wall. There is some traffic, so the driver that spun has to wait until they pass before they can back up and get back to the race. Then another car comes in too fast and the driver sees him, but does not slow down. Once it's too late, the second car crashes into the first car very hard, which was surprisingly easy to avoid.
    And they call the first driver the idiot? Either the rookies need to grow up and learn to drive or they can quit iRacing forever.

    I have been on iracing for less than 7 days and I've won 3 night/hourly races and made my way easily into the D class but I have no money there fore I'm stuck racing in street stock. How I did this? I did this by practicing lines so I can be passed without hitting the wall off of turn 2/4 getting passed. I also drop back whenever I see 2+ cars battling for a position but I still maintain a .5- to a full second difference. If I haven't had done that then I would put pressure on the guy in front of me and likely force him to make eager moves.
