I would think it is a given that when you are leaving on a long passage that you clean the bottom before you leave. However It is evident that most people skip that and suffer the lost speed on the passage.
Oh yeah, just got this in my recommended ones, even though already watched it. Looks like channel's getting a bump. Catchy cover image on this video helps, methinks. WTG mate!
Just checked the AIS app. Maggie is a nice spot for a break. Sorry to see the adverse impact that La Niña has had on your progress. It is also slowing people from heading north but mostly because we are wimpy - rain and the consistent 20-25 knots SE. I wish you fair winds.
Mate, when you got your first note bought a big smile to me dial. You are truly blessed mate, looking forward to watching all these solo videos and seeing how many love notes you find. Enjoy your trip mate and stay safe. Put your bloody harness on please ;-} 👍🏻🙏🏼😎
Love your style Vernon! Particularly the mouldy looking T worn inside out ... would love to be in on that trip! And the love notes are so cute. She's a keeper!
Yes indeed. I have a shorter pole I use for the jib, this big spinnaker pole is too big for me to use alone. I should just get rid of it but for some reason I always think that one the off chance I'd lose my rig then this would make a passable jury rig mast
ciao Vernon, great honest job as ever...solo sailing now...still remember yr first episodes without Maria... "keeping myself busy avoiding thinking too much"...yes, yes lucky guy, keep on sailing Fair Winds! Cheers to Life 🍻
fantastic stuff mate..thx for sharing this.. I love it.... I know how hard it is to film and sail..cheers and keep em coming ..its super great to watch !
I have done a sailingcourse on the Dutch "Waddenzee" and "Ijsselmeer" for 6 days (overnight at harbours) on a Centurion 41 without furling headsail and whithout reeflines guided to the cockpit. Man that was tough sailing, with a depth of average 3meters the waves are short and choppy everywhere, with bfr6 and gusts to 7, but we did it (me and 2 other students and the skipper). Its weird but it was the hardest thing ive ever did, learning to plot your route, knowing where the $%^# you are :) and hailing locks and harbours on the radio, while doing sailing exercises, but i love it now more then ever.
06:00 Agree on the speed wheel removal being irrationally scary, it is actually not bad, the small amount of water coming in, but it seems scary while doing it, the 'scary amount' of water certainly doesnt come through on video . I guess every sailor always wants water to stay on the outside of the boat, not coming in through a hole 😆 Actually doing this operation while underway is the best way because the speed of water flowing under the hull keeps more water from flowing straight up into the boat, so while it's a bit contrary to common sense, to say "lets do this fix while actively moving fast underway", it works out best.
Nice sunset video ! Thats a lot of miles, sounds like an interesting trip. I think I saw the boat accelerate as the sails came out, maybe it knows its headed towards a refit :-). I think some flowers to Marie are in order (poll your patreons ?).
Just a tip, if Mari does an online course She can get visa for duration of study...my swedish friend is here in Oz, 18mth diploma, three nights a week, four hour classes, all via zoom. Can also work full-time. Give us a yell if You want details .
Just lovely thoughtful notes, they are there, to keep you going, you are both lucky. All you have to do is just read about Johnny Depp and his ex-court case. Pure hell. Be safe. Looking forward to the Sydney meeting and lunch when you get here. SV Skoiern IV
you probably have a reason that im unaware of, but cost-wise woulnt it be cheaper to refit in, say, langkawi, than in australia? if im not mistaken the distances are comparable from your start point.
A big goal of mine is to sail around New Zealand which is quite far from Langkawi. Sometimes things seem cheaper on the onset but end up being not so. In Asia about the only thing cheaper in the yachting sector is the labour and in my experience the labour is not really skilled or even useful.
@@SailingLearningByDoing completely agree on the labour. im refitting a 30 footer in Macau (near Hong Kong) and wouldnt pay anyone to touch the boat as they are utterly hopeless. BUT, and it is a big one, Macau is tax free as is Langkawi, meaning is not a bad place to get materials (no going around shipping unfortunately). Given your sailing plans it makes more sense to go to Australia though
TBH, I have missed a few vids and when you said you were going solo I did think... well you know, but it's none of my business but it appears its just temporary my wife and I have had three one year separations because of our jobs but that hasn't changed us just made us appreciate things a little more. I just finished life of PI that somebody gave me. Have you read that? Might not be great for a solo passage lol. Also as far as easy reading goes I just finished about 16 books by Elmore Leonard its hard to put his book down once you start reading one if you like those types of books. Safe travels buddy .
Thanks mate. Marie and I have got on amazingly well after a full year together on our small boat. She's in France, having good family time and even enjoyed a few snowy days but now she cant wait to get back to me and boat life. Its taking a while to sort out a 12 month visa for Australia though so she's having to be patient.
Yeah haven't really met any other channels infall the time in Indonesia. Actually met the Family off Catalpa a few weeks ago though. Might be meeting up with Slim & Soph soon too.
Vernon I want to buy a sailboat up to $60000 in Indonesia ...do you know a place to shop for ..in internet not much , except in Langkawi Malesia..but it is not convenient !? pl help !
Hi. There are not many boats for sale in Indonesia but your best bet woud be to contact the marina's. Try Marina del Ray, Medana Bay Marina. You could also put a message on Sail SE Asia Facebook group as they know all the boats for sale. Good luck
A case could be made for that being the correct way to wear a T-shirt. Why have the bulky, uncomfortable, stitching and excess against the skin, especially when there's nobody around to see it? (apart from we 26,800)
Vern I know your a experienced sailor and your experience should tell you to at least have a life jacket on if not tethered to the boat when making changes to your sails on deck . I'm sure when Marie watched this she would be very upset with you . I miss her already as I'm sure you do too .
Lanolin grease on the speed wheel helps prevent growth for a little while.
Oh that's a tip I shall try out. Thanks
I would think it is a given that when you are leaving on a long passage that you clean the bottom before you leave. However It is evident that most people skip that and suffer the lost speed on the passage.
Logic huh...
Look after her mate. You have a real gem there. Fair winds.
🙏

Good to hear it. Been a bit of a general bump since returning to Oz
Wow Vern! What a cool episode. Marie is a very sweet lady. Thanks for taking me along, buddy!
Glad you enjoyed it Les
We have done that speed sensor removal in our Top Hat. Looks bad but is easy
yeah more the thought of it is scary
What a wonderful life indeed!
Oh yes it is. its about choices.
@@SailingLearningByDoing an inspiration for all of us. 👍👍👍👍👍
Hi , Safe travel to you both.
Marie is a true gem, Take care Buddy.
Thanks, you too!

I'd love some 20-25kt winds from behind right now!
Nice sailing mate I'm here now in port Douglas xendia yacht
Ah, still up there? I'm down at Magnetic Island
You two are a cute couple! Happy for you guys! Safe travels to both of you on your adventures! Prayers!
Thank you so much!
Have a safe trip
thanks
Good cleaning of the depth meter speed meter, explained it, executed, safety check, finish the job, nice video.
Thanks 👍
Look forward to to footage on this trip to OZ , fair winds and calm seas
🙏 There'll be about 5-6 videos coming
That was actually a really good sailing video. Just what I needed Thanks. Best regards from Jarle
Glad you enjoyed it!

Yum. Fish flavoured toothpaste.
Hey Vernon...great you are sailing again. The more sailing tips and notes about equipment the better ....hope you manage the sleep ok.....
Good to know, hopefully you'll find some useful info in the coming few videos
You've got a damn good thing going! Love all your videos, thanks for sharing with us! ❤⛵
You are welcome Cody, glad you are enjoying the videos
Great video and safe travel back to Australia! Cheers from Western Australia.
Thanks 👍
Haha love your video. Those trade winds are going to get you!
yep for sure they are
Nice video Vernon, thanks for sharing. Give a wave as you pass Hervey Bay.
You got it
Must be bitter sweet to leave beautiful Indonesia. Keep up your great videos mate!
It really is! We've had an amazing 4 years there and its really sinking in now
that whisker/spinaker pole has seen better days

yeah, for me personally is not effing up the thread, that keeps my heart racing ahahahah
Yeah its not a lot of water really, maybe 1-2 litres all up. BUT, if things went bad then it could be way more.

Schiehallion deserves some TLC thats for sure. She's served us very well for 4 years now.
Hi Vernon, safe travels mate, would be great to meet you when you come to Brisbane or Gold Coast. Cheers Dave
That would be cool!
Good vidio sorry your alone on a long trip, how did Maria get untied lol have a safe passage
Thanks Brad. Marie doesn't really enjoy long passages so we figured this was a good time for her to have some time with family.
Love stays :-) Great solo too and soon together.
Always!

nah, part #5

Haha, we finally did ours!! , still reading dodgy but
ooops haha the speed log that is
Nakama is probably just too fast now, need to upgrade to a race wheel

Was wondering if you would cross paths with other TH-camrs in area, Black Swan in this video, and maybe Nanji is headed to Darwin
Yeah haven't really met any other channels infall the time in Indonesia. Actually met the Family off Catalpa a few weeks ago though. Might be meeting up with Slim & Soph soon too.
Nanji is on mooring in W Sumatra, nowhere near where Schiehallion was (i.e. in oz already, I believe).
Missing her already, she’s a lovely lady
Its been over a month now and I'm missing her heaps

Nice one, bro. Sailing with Flip Flops. Oh, I guess you guys call them thongs, don’t you?

I like em insideout, plus you can get a couple of days more wear before they need washing.
May want to consider INVESTING in a CLEAN T-shirt?
Well, maybe not.
Nah

I sure do miss her. I use my own judgement as to when I deem the conditions suitable to get around the deck un-tethered.
