    Random add: I was offered a bucket bong at ‘the tip’ by a couple of locals about 25 years ago. And made the mistake of accepting it. Absolutely destroyed me. Left me with a frozen 2 liter coke bottle of ice and 2 legs that couldn’t function for over 6 hours in 40 degree heat. About half way through the ‘episode’ I ended up dragging myself the ending side of the tip to see a phenomenon called ‘the converging tide’ Everything left that wasn’t ‘unconverged’ at that time then completely unraveled. Not a conventional experience at the top of Oz but nonetheless memorable.

    Hey Vernon, really enjoying this series, now I know there’s probably a lot going on when a squall hits, I’d love to see some footage of how Schiehallion deals with big seas? All the best Fella. (New Paint looks, Wow!)

    • @SailingLearningByDoing
      @SailingLearningByDoing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi James. You dont tend to get big seas from a squall as its passed over to quick for the waves to really get up. Next time I'll face really big seas will be on the crossing over to New Zealand

    Many years ago I rode a motorbike up to the tip of Cape York, not that many fuel stops on the roads/tracks either. Although certainly more than when sailing. Some tough sailing there this time of year. At least you are coming into some winter weather for the refit.

    We tacked from Gove to Cooktown with 20-25kts everyday. It was relentless and tiring. Enjoy the calms and use them to get as far south as possible. Confession-sailing against the trade winds was one of the dumbest things I’ve done.

    One for the utube AI. Love the how you say so matter-of-factly "I shouldn't have said that about the wind, we are still so close to Indonesia" So true anyone who has lived in Asia for any length of time. Never walk into a jungle and say "hope I don't see any tigers or get bitten by a Cobra" People love the raw sailing footage if we wanted to see fancy edited stuff special effects there's always netflix nat geo etc.

  • @shanedenniscom

    Mate you probably know this by now - there is a one knot current flowing north from about Innisfail to the Cape most of the year.
    Most people up here don't seem to be aware of this. They just motor south into the wind. The current increases around most points.
    I think a viable alternative is to reach into the Coral Sea and then tack south as the wind turns Easterly. But haven't tried that myself yet. The current weakens as you move east off the coast.
    If you open up Windy or some other app which shows currents you can see them. I think I'm just more aware of it because I have an electric motor with limited range and are more sensitive to current.
    Smiley from Cairns

      @shanedenniscom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PS if you haven't made it past Cairns yet can share some reef anchorages/moorings around here that will look pretty good in a video.

    • @SailingLearningByDoing
      @SailingLearningByDoing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
