      Yep, lol. He actually made a video on this very condition, and explains why humans will not generally suffer from this, even if they go to great lengths to "poison" themselves with distilled water. You apparently only have a realistic chance of dying from distilled water poisoning if you already suffer from syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone, which disables the body´s natural defenses against such, namely, forcing urination to compensate for the imbalance.

    As a paramedic, I want to point out that 100% oxygen for a short amount of time like during an ambulance ride to the hospital after a stroke, or heart attack is actually therapeutic, it's when you have someone hooked up to high flow oxygen for hours to days that oxygen toxicity comes into play.

      Makes sense. If our distant descendants were to try to colonize a planet that had an atmosphere made of MOSTLY Oxygen (and nowhere near as much nitrogen), the colonists of such a world would need to terraform the planet to have more nitrogen, or else risk what we may as well call "aging faster than mayflies." (If I'm not mistaken, free radicals might contribute to aging, so that's why I compared oxygen overdose to rapid aging)

    The first most painful was refeeding syndrome. *shudder* It's literally where your body gets so used to starvation that you can't tolerate food well anymore. I didn't eat anything for 85 hours, and suddenly, almost 2,000 calories. Boom. So much pain I was crying on the floor.

    It's pretty funny, because a few months ago- in winter more specifically, where my windows were closed due to frigid temperatures and the in-door air felt stale and not-so-refreshing. I had a weird thought of just acquiring one or more tanks of O² and just let loose with that all winter. Wondering what the *effects* of that would be, I looked it up and learned of Oxygen Toxicity, resulting in me scrapping that idea pretty quickly and merely crack-open a window if it wasn't too cold. :P
    Damn you, _"good stuff",_ why can't we just have MORE of you, without ending up dying quicker?! lol

    thank you so much for mentioning polycythemia. I was diagnosed with polycythemia rubra vera about 3 years ago. It feels like no one expect the doctor and myself knows what it is. also, it really hard to explain why I so exhausted sometimes at work. the biggest thing I get is, " too many red blood cells? isn't that what Lance Armstrong was doing?" I feel exhausted most of the time. because of the over production of rbc's my marrow can't properly keep up with the production of hemoglobin. it feels like I'm living at 10k ft above sea level constantly.

      @Psychocatalyst 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yeah, but if you have to take O-chem there's no easy way out. You have to spend hours memorizing everything, at least until you start seeing all the patterns. Oxidation typically means more bonds to oxygen, and reduction typically means more bonds to hydrogen. But different oxidizing agents oxidize different things to differing degrees. Some of them cause oxidative cleavage (Replacing a C-C bond with two C-O bonds), like potassium permanganate, chromate salts are somewhat less strong, but still fully oxidize things to -COOH groups. Things like PCC even less so. There's no way around memorizing that. If that sounds like giberish to you then welcome to O-chem!!!!

    My great aunt had leukemia and suffered from leukocytosis (high white blood cell count) as a result. Incidentally, when she was diagnosed they gave her perhaps a year or two to live as she was rather old, I think around 60 at the time and it was about 30 years ago so treatments weren't as effective as they are today. She showed them though. She wound up living another 28 years before she died and she was in relatively good health for most of it. You know, for somebody who has leukemia. My family always attributed it to the fact that she had a farm which she worked on up until about a year before her death when she finally had to sell it and move. It just goes to show you though, you shouldn't give up hope even if you're given a crappy prognosis.

    • @theleafthinker3383
      @theleafthinker3383 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It depends, there are some things that I would need to assume in order to get an answer. Like is it in Celsius, Kelvin, or Fahrenheit. If it's Kelvin it would be zero Kelvin. If it's Celsius it would be 303 Celsius (from Celsius convert to Kelvin times by two and back to Celsius). If it's Fahrenheit it would be 460 (same process but Fahrenheit not Celsius). If it is not one of those then I have no idea how to solve the riddle.

    • @connorwoodard3400
      @connorwoodard3400 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem with this statement is the "twice as cold" part. It wouldn't matter what temperature you said it would still makes no sense. For instance, if I say it is 100 degrees, tomorrow it will be twice as cold it still makes no sense and has no answer that everyone would agree with.
