fun fact, the Holy Roman Empire affair is how Austria got its flag. During the crusades, Duke Leopold von Babenberg apparently had the "Insolence" to raise his own banner, the banner of the house of Babenberg, next to the banners of England and France. Richard the Lionheart was so upset about that, that he personally tore that banner down, so when he travelled through the HRE, Leopold had him captured and delivered to the Holy Roman Emperor (Henry VI, father of Frederick II "stupor mundi") and as a reward, the Emperor allowed Leopold to from now on carry his banner as the banner of the entire Duchy of Austria.
Richard the lion heart is literally the peak of medieval controversy. There were 3 students at history in my school who used to make whole presentations at lunch to diss the opinions of a teacher who said John was better than Richard the lionheart
Fun Fact: King John of England is often regarded as the worst king of England, but he was handed a falling empire due to Richard’s exploits, John was blamed for Richard’s wrongs
Richard flagellated himself when he got stuck in Sicilly for he blamed his own sins for getting the Crusaders stuck because of a storm, one of the sins listed is buggery. So it's highly likely Richard was at least bisexual.
Whereas in France, at that time, we have Philippe Auguste, who took a lot of land back from the english, because you guys were too busy fighting each other So cheers lads And it might have triggered the 100 years war but LETS NOT TALK ABOUT THAT SHALL WE ?
I like to think in this timeline historians look back at this time and Richard is just a foot note the tale most revolving around Pierre this random count who maybe historians will say was close friends to King Henry II perhaps the king viewed Pierre as more of a son and part of his family than any of his traitorous kin So apon King Henry’s death bed he declared to Count Pierre England is his and to exterminate all who are part of the royal family to avenge him and secure Pierre place on the throne Thus is the tale of some lunatic count who became the King of England and who certainly went on to get London back from the HRE making them pay a massive debt to England and the Latin empire remained a external ally to England and Pierre dynasty lasts to the modern day
I think the accounts of Richard are skewed both bad and good, I believe that the accounts of his sins have been skewed heavily because he taxed the clergy, as after that generation of clergy men died out they began to record him more favorably.
Laith, you should just make a series where you start as a custom landless adventurer with the immortal trait and then just go ham with the rest of it, like going from the earliest start date to the latest and that sort of stuff
I've got a challenge for you in EU4 that I did recently. Conquer India as an English Catholic/Anglican Mughals. This is how I did it: Start as England. Beat France. Conquer Castile - Take some islands and Cadiz. Conquer Andalusia, take Gibraltar (just for the mission) Conquer Aragon, take Malta & Sicily. Conquer Naples, take Salento . Take out the rest of Britain (just for the missions). Conquer Venice for the Crete province. Conquer Mamluks to take Syria. Conquer Qara Qoyunulu (take all the Kurdish provinces) Conquer Fars (cos Timurids had collapsed & Fars was big). Conquer Afghanistan to get towards Delhi. Conquer Mewar cos they owned Delhi. Change culture to Kurdish. Change religion to Muslim. Form Mughals. Change religion back to Catholic. Change culture back to English. Then conquer the rest of India. (I did console commands change religion, just cos I've never really done it with rebels and dont know how to do it well, but I'm sure you could do it right?)
I would say that calling someone a “bad king” while looking at it through a modern lens is a bit disingenuous. What we need to ask is: was he that much worse compared to other contemporary rulers? Otherwise it was quite an informative video and most importantly it was entertaining.
@JayIngemar There is many others like: William II of Sicily, Fredrick II holy roman emperor, Pedro II/ James I of Aragon, Alfonso VIII/ Ferdinand III of castile All of those monarchs are contemporary or very close to the regin of John and all of them were Good kings and the remaining monarchs were average like Afonso II of Portugal and the Scandinavian kings but the very awful kings like John or Richard are very rare and the people I mentioned ruled most of Europe and I might add to the list philippe II successors who are louis VIII and Louis IX who are still amazing rulers
Yes! I was among the ones asking for this, the only disappointment is that Richard died a bit too soon for my taste but I am now at peace, thank you :)
Laith, you should play as Barbarossas son Heinrich VI, the Giga Chad himself, who gave 0 fucks and imprisoned this guy. If you look into that Richard did in Sicily, the land that belonged to Heinrich wife, it actually makes sense why he had him Captured by Leopold of Austria. Richard Pressed Tancred of Sicily (a usurper) to pay him a large amount of money, money that did not belong to Tancred, but to Konstance de Hauteville, the Wife of Heinrich, the amount of money that Heinrich asked for, in order to release richard, adds up almost perfectly with the one that Richard got from Tancred, he just took back, what belonged to him anyway.
I don't know if I was the actual viewer who inspired this, but I said it in the comments of a previous video, so I'm claiming credit. Operation Declaw is a go
Hi everybody, the word of the day is extirpation. How do you feel about Richard's and John's portrayal in Robin Hood (2010) movie? More or less accurate?
You do realize the stuff you mentioned are not based in facts and only on rumors and less written by his enemies (who were later denounced at his trial). Yes I am a fan of Richard the Lionheart. The Byzantine Guy he attacked was a traitor so Richard's attack was justified. Furthermore, the tales of his cruelty were lies. He did not say he would get rid of England to get funds. I will say Sladin was a man of great cruelty, curse him!
Laith you are wrong about Richard. He is was one of England's best kings and a hero to all of christendom. You say he wasn't a good King but what makes a good king in the 1100s. He defended his inheritance all his life and completely outmatched Phillipe II, one of France's greatest kings. He went on crusade defending christendom one of his duties as a christian king. What makes a good king in those days isn't the peace loving, kind man who cares for his people but the warrior king who wins glory for himself and his people and Richard is the epitome of that when it comes to England. The chivalrous king.
- Bankrupts England Twice - Known For Being Incredibly Cruel (even for the time) - “Defends Christendom” by pissing off everyone else on crusade so they leave early + literally demonstrates every deadly sin - Conspired with the French to give them land to help overthrow his father Nah bro he sucked
Yeah well, Henry II. was not good in managing the sharing of power with his sons. @Laith , what is your source with the extreme cruelty in comparison with other kings?
@@lucaseckert1690he’s just spouting nonsense. He was the only Christian king who actually made a difference in the 4th crusade and he never actually lost a battle to Saladin. The Austrians were mad because when Richard took Acre they raised their banner and were trying to take credit for the victory while hardly contributing so Richard had their banner cut down from the walls and replaced it with his own (rightfully so). Phillip Augustus couldn’t defeat Richard so he left the holy land early to back stab Richard and invade his lands which is what prompted Richard to make a deal with Saladin. There are also sources that state that the English economy was in full recovery at the time of Richard’s death so you could say his only mistake was dying early.
