Romania didn't claim Banat. This is what Ion Antonescu said when Germany offered Banat to Romania: "I’d rather cut my own veins than occupy an inch of Serbia."
Antonescu's letter to Iuliu Maniu’s stressed that Romania had claim to Serbian Banat due to the Alba Iulia Declaration of December 1 1918 in which all the Romanians of the Habsburg Monarchy declared their union with the Romanian kingdom and the treaty of August 1916.
I didn’t actually know this! Why were these towns taken specifically. The loss of three towns feels like a very light punishment considering the actions Hungary took in the Conflict. Does anyone know why the peace was so lenient, and what significance these three cities held in Hungary?
@@Gander047you could easily just Google this yourself, but in short: Czechoslovakia was given the territory to create the so-called Bratislava Bridgehead as a defensive measure against Hungary. They were also the only one that didn't join Hitler's "crusade against the judeo-bolshevism" out of pure nationalism, fascism or Nazi sympathies, but because they were brutally invaded by the Soviet Union during the Winter War just a year earlier, which resulted in the loss of 11% of Finnish territory, along which 10% of the Finnish population had to flee their homes. (It's important to know that this land that the Soviets annexed from Finland wasn't some "contested" territory that had both pro-Soviet and pro-Finnish people living on it and that nationalists from both Finland and Russia had claimed and fought over in the past, but a 100% undisputed part of Finland whose every citizen felt themselves as 100% a Finnish citizen. When the Soviets took this land, literally EVERY SINGLE ONE of the 400 000 people living in there fled to Western Finland, and the Soviets received the land completely EMPTY.). The Finns obviously wanted to get back this land that the Soviets had annexed from them, but also the Soviets kept constantly threatening them with a second invasion and a full annexation even after the Winter War had officially ended. On top of that, Finland was also facing a severe shortage of food after the Soviets occupied 30% of their most productive farmland, and that could have resulted in a catastrophic famine in the country. So they desperately needed someone as an ally to sell them weapons and cheap grain. And because allying with the Western Allies wasn't possible anymore after the German occupation of Denmark and Norway, the only remaining option was the Nazi Germany, who then obviously demanded Finland to help them in Operation Barbarossa as a price to pay for their aid and protection (and of course a lot of Finns also wanted to counterattack the Soviets anyway to get the occupied land back, so they were not that hesitant to fulfill this German demand). But it's important to understand that Finland was not IDEOLOGICALLY an ally or supporter of the Axis, only militarily. There was very little support to fascism in Finland, and they didn't fight FOR Nazism or the Axis, they only fought WITH them and used the Axis military aid to help their own country in a very difficult situation. They were ideologically pretty much on their own side, even though they militarily joided the Axis because they were stuck between rock and a hard place, being threatened by the Soviet Union and a famine and having a very important piece of their land just recently taken away from them. Finland was the only Axis country that protected its Jews from Hitler, and treated them as completely equal citizens like the Allies did, and many Finnish Jewish heroes actually fought alongside the regular Finns for the country's independence agains the Soviet invaders. When Himmler visited Finland and offered German help to "solve Finland's Jewish peoblem", Finnish prime minister Jukka Ragnell famously responded to him: "Finland has no Jewish problem".

2:19 weren't there more Hungarians in Carpathian-Ruthenia? I thought they dominated the larger cities, but not the countryside. Would love to learn more, thanks!
Yes, there was a hungarian strip in the southern, flat areas, while the mountainous north was Ruthenian inhabited. The 1st Vienna Award already ceded basically all ethnic Hungarian land in Carpathian Ruthenia, the subsequent conquest in 39 was only justified in a loose sense that Ruthenians were historically more loyal to Hungary than other nationalities.
No according to the ethnic censuses of the time the Hungarians were a very minor factor along the border there claim was that they had always ruled it not ethnicity. When czechoslovakia was conquered in late 1938 carpatho ukraine declared independence and held it for three months before hungary conquered them in 1939.
Much is being made of Bulgaria being the only Axis member to gain land after WW2, but this broad brush overlooks crucial details. The territory in question was acquired from Romania before either became Axis states. And Romania lacked North Transylvania upon joining the Axis. Romania is the only Axis member with more land at the end of WW2 than when it joined the Axis. I think this is more impressive, tbh.
Finally, I can know if I'm clicking on the historical options in the popups for the HOI 4 events. I wish they had some sort of indicator on them for the historical choice like when doing the Fate of Yugoslavia event.
I think that for that Brasil would have to not become independent. That would call for an equal footing and not a meteopolis colony situation and this leads to a shift in focus on the Rio court.

Hey nice video very interesting, Bulgarian history is fascinating to me. By the way for you’re April fool vidéo I think Entente vs Axis and Allies vs Central power would be fun I think entente axis in 1914 and allies central powers in 1939 would be fun to watch
Bulgaria had future goals across the Black Sea if operation Barbarossa was a success, coastal Georgia and even future parts of north turkey after the war. They figured Italy and Germany would want to partition turkey after the war. Not sure if either major power would have allowed that though

From here I don't have much more but I tried to keep it realistic but I had to bend it a little. While it would have been interesting to see something outlined about the Slovak State's goals in wars against Poland and Hungary, it probably wouldn't beg much more analysis than 'nigh-on unachievable to have far grander goals' and its obvious nonexistence by the end of the war invalidates the ability or need to evaluate 'how it did' (esp. regarding the foreword at the start in how it doesn't justify entrance into the war)
Romanians were so motivated to join the war thinking that they are heroes helping the countries get their territories back and stop the spreading of Judeo-Bolshevism. They stopped Hungary when it was communist and try to stop communism in USSR
Those were never their land. Those were their land for 20 years. Romania was not much older either. Romanias size grew with 130% after wwi with all the cowardly stolen lands.
@timeanagy8495 not stealing cowardly. Romania got southern Dobruja in the Balkan wars, Bessarabia voted to unite with Romania in 1918 and in 1919 they won the Hungaro-Romanian war that was started by Hungary
@stroestefan7003 no, that was started by romania and it was not a real war, hungary dissolved its army. In a war vlachs could not pass the carpathians. When they passed, they made just a short progress without resistance in 1916.

No!
ITALY MENTIONED!??!?!! PERFECT ITALY CONFIRMED??!?!
Minor part of Slovakia from Yugoslavia? Truly peak.
2:19 weren't there more Hungarians in Carpathian-Ruthenia? I thought they dominated the larger cities, but not the countryside. Would love to learn more, thanks!
I'm pretty sure there were only Hungarians right next to the Hungarian border
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarians_in_Ukraine?wprov=sfla1
@@lunalingo4461 Thank you for letting me me know. I assumed that the Hungarians were in most of the region, not just the bordering strip

Romania is so pro trans they named a territory after them, it's so nice of them!
How did you post this 2 days before the video came out
@@mesosoup9343He has time travel
Yes how did you do this😮😮 amazing and mysterious
@@mesosoup9343 I am special
So true
Much is being made of Bulgaria being the only Axis member to gain land after WW2, but this broad brush overlooks crucial details. The territory in question was acquired from Romania before either became Axis states. And Romania lacked North Transylvania upon joining the Axis. Romania is the only Axis member with more land at the end of WW2 than when it joined the Axis. I think this is more impressive, tbh.
WW2 started in 1939. Check the borders of Romania in 1939 and then ,in 1945....lost a lot of land.
Finally, I can know if I'm clicking on the historical options in the popups for the HOI 4 events. I wish they had some sort of indicator on them for the historical choice like when doing the Fate of Yugoslavia event.

Suggestion: What if everything went perfectly For Portugal after the Napoleónic wars?
I think that for that Brasil would have to not become independent. That would call for an equal footing and not a meteopolis colony situation and this leads to a shift in focus on the Rio court.
What if the spanish colonies actually returned to the empire after the napoleonic wars as some parts claimed to fight for?

Except for War of the Stray Dog
Exploring the territorial goals of the minor Entente powers in a similar style might make an interesting video.
3:38 small remark but they didn't just "annex" it, there was a war with Carpathian Ukraine.
Yeah not worth mentioning
That can hardly be called a war
@@kuro1132
War- a state of armed conflict between different countries or different groups within a country.
-Oxford dictionary
It lasted for nearly month, much more than Anglo-Zanzibari war for example
It's called "Carpathian Ruthenia". Not sure where the other name was made up.

Unique video topic, and well spoken!
Nice to release this on Finnish independence day
This a really well done video!
this video idea is great
Wow, a possible history video thats actually real history, so rare, we’ve gotten like 6
Axis in an alternate timeline: "We did it, We won! We're gonna have so much more territory!"
Germany, turning it's armies around: "Wir? Wer sind wir? Sprechen Sie Französisch?"
I love the effort to put multiple languages in this video, like mine, Spanish, but I love Mr. PH's voice more
Great video, as always!
just minor mistake aroun 4:50 if I hear corrext - I hear minor part of Slovakia, not Slovenia.
4:40 you called slovenia slovakia

They always do 😤😭
Classic
Moreover there was no Slovenia in that time as that part of Yugoslavia was annexed mainly by the Germans and Italians. That partition awarded Hungary the small plain of Lendva/Lendava.
That was actually really good!
Hey nice video very interesting, Bulgarian history is fascinating to me.
By the way for you’re April fool vidéo I think Entente vs Axis and Allies vs Central power would be fun I think entente axis in 1914 and allies central powers in 1939 would be fun to watch
You missed the 1938 Polish-Slovak border changes in Spis and Orava
Hey yg, why did Germany annex the Thessaloniki/Central Macedonia part of Greece? Just curious.
Bulgaria had future goals across the Black Sea if operation Barbarossa was a success, coastal Georgia and even future parts of north turkey after the war. They figured Italy and Germany would want to partition turkey after the war. Not sure if either major power would have allowed that though
You should talk about the territorial goals of the Quisling regime, they had some pretty funky irredentist claims.
Please bring back the calm waltz background music, it’s much better for these scenarios
Interesting. I never knew about german desires on Thessaloniki
Suggestion:
What if the good relations of the USA and Russian empire turned into a full on alliance after the sale of Alaska?
It ain’t happening bro
Tsar Boris III has been the greatest diplomat in Bulgarian history
5:10 there's an error there. Romania did NOT want Banat. The Germans offered it Romania as partial compensation for Transylvania and Romania outright refused to take it saying it has no claim on it.
this video is 19 minutes and 42 seconds long, epic
You should do what if everything went perfect for Britain like during the 20th country to 2000 century next
Yes! Finally another intresting video of PH (don't think bad, PH is "Possible History")

Good video.
Oh c’est super enfin le langage en français moi qui adore vos vidéo sa m’aide enfin à les comprendre en totalité
7:11 the region is actually called Bessarabia, not Moldova. Yes, this does mean that the current Rep. Moldova has 0 territory in the historic region of Moldova lol
Could you please do a video on what If Germany was allowed to annex austria in 1919?
Could you please do a video about what if Portugal and Spain joined WW2, and explore different cenarios, depending on which side they join?
ight i know this was probably suggested before but i have a video suggestion:
What if the new world colonized the old world instead of the other way around?
not sure how this would realistically play out but maybe you could do something with one of the american empires or perhaps have the natives invade the old world in retaliation for previous colonization attempts?
yay another PH video is out!

5:40 - didn't Czechoslovakia get a few villages south of Bratislava?
Correct, he either forgot about this or didnt know
yes, those being Rusovce, Čunovo and Jarovce

Well Romania and Bulgaria were also kinda forced into the war without much option to resist. They were a victim too, just a different kind of victim.

Bulgaria + Greece vs Ottomans [Part of First Balkan War] (Bulgaria + Greece wins)
Ottomans + Greece vs Bulgaria [Part of Second Balkan War] (Ottomans + Greece wins)
Ottomans + Bulgaria vs Greece [Balkan theater of WW1] (Greece wins)
Kinda funny that Greece was on the winning side of all three conflicts
(Obviously there were more nations on each side [Well, more nations against the Ottomans in the first Balkan War, more nations against Bulgaria in the second, and then obviously the third one was WW1 so there were a lot on both sides] but it's funny to look at it as just these three countries)
Yeah, that is the difference between winning all the battles (Bulgaria) and choosing the right allies (Greece).
what if timur reunited the mongol empire

If you take suggestions for videos here’s mine.
What if the uk threatened a nuclear response against Argentina in the falklands war
I think it would make an interesting video no matter how realistic it is
Small gripe re Finland: the map doesn’t show the Norway/Russian border - instead makes it look like Finland has access to the Barents Sea (which the Finns never did)
No, it's accurate. There was access to Barents.
What if the Prussia never took Alsace-Lorraine from France after the Franco-Prussian war?
Basically, what if Bismarck decided to treat the French the same way as the Austrians, and reconcile with them?

Video 17 of asking the best history youtuber to do "what if everything went perfect for britan" 🙏 i got a form of a script her to help narrow it. have things like britan already making efforts to keep the dominons more integrated from their creation (Canada in the early 1800s, Australia in the late 1800s being more lenient with the black south african population) upon American independence only giving up the southern and mid lands keeping the north outside 13 colonies being much kinder to the Indian population and somewhat caring for their well being (delays Indian indepence) and most importantly forming a federal union with the dominons (aside from India that's impossible) being smarter in ww1 (doing the high lord admirals strategy) and doing being a bit better in ww2 Churchill can't become pm under any circumstances as he will bankrupt britan and sell the empire off to America. For the cold war not much has changed apart from a federalised state between britan and the settler states, I'd predict india still getting independence in mabye 1956 (later but not late) eygpt following soon after now let's skip to 1963 (random year idk when it would happen) eygpt nationalised the suez this upset france and britan who along with Israel millatary intervene tge federation takes the suez canal and france is there as emotional support or whatever they do, amercia and the Soviets both order them to back down yap yap yap until we have the federation not back down and france joins both refusing to leave until they get what they want, the federation promises Portugal they'd help if they have rebellions in the colonies in return Portugal gives their support, here there's a full blown western crisis as nato is about to disintegrate as here britan is much stronger (not on amercias level but still very powerful, the Soviets also quiet down for the best chance of nato breaking apart) not like in our timeline where they were collapsing. Here we have 2 routes one where amerca backs down another where they refuse and nato splits, it's more realistic for amercia to either back down or compromise but since it's perfect for britan they outright back down, britan re occupys the suez france become britans closest ally and vice versa. Nothing here changes execpt from britan mabye keeping more colonies (nothing major) like Somalia the Jamaica and other islands Leone ect, after the cold war the federation becomes the very deserving 2nd super power when china rises I belive the 2 would be nearly identical in power the federation has more potential tho, here amercia would have to consult the federation not being able to act on its own with much of Europe preferring the federation (to be clear amercia Is still easily stronger they just can't do whatever they like) countries like Nigeria, India and others will have the monarch as their head of state while afrcian states Nigeria and eygpt ect (eygpt may very well undergo a revolution following the suez humiliation) during there independence britan (aside from eygpt) will give small loans to help them (mainly to keep good ties with it's former colonies) during the Nigerian civil war britan may actually deploy men to the Nigerian government's side and help crush the uprising leaving Nigeria (in the short term) reliant on britan mabye Myanmar gets independence but during their civil war they get bailed out by the federation and pretty much become a defacto puppet reliant on the federation. From here I don't have much more but I tried to keep it realistic but I had to bend it a little. Before I forget the main reason amercia would back down is because britan held all the uranium amercia used if that was leveraged America would have little choice. So at the end we have a larger (expanded in the west coats) Canadian territory same Australia a more wealthy south african territory the suez canal and good relationships with it's old colonies (plus a defacto puppet over Myanmar) and a large British federation Oh and they keep Hong kong (I'm actually from Hong Kong if you wanted to know half Ethiopian born with by an Ethiopian mother and a dad from Hong Kong) if you couldn't tell I've thought about this alt history a lot
Considering how British history went, we live in this timeline. Only thing that would really change would be:
More countries being like Canada or Australia (Such as India), as in having a crown;
Ireland staying under Britain

Finland’s Northern border by the northern coast was the post Winter War border instead of the post ww1 border
4:47 minor mistake, that is Slovenia, not Slovakia (I doubt other people noticed (nor you), so might swell put it out there)
While it would have been interesting to see something outlined about the Slovak State's goals in wars against Poland and Hungary, it probably wouldn't beg much more analysis than 'nigh-on unachievable to have far grander goals' and its obvious nonexistence by the end of the war invalidates the ability or need to evaluate 'how it did' (esp. regarding the foreword at the start in how it doesn't justify entrance into the war)
