      I didn’t actually know this!
      Why were these towns taken specifically. The loss of three towns feels like a very light punishment considering the actions Hungary took in the Conflict.
      Does anyone know why the peace was so lenient, and what significance these three cities held in Hungary?

    • @Florian87
      @Florian87 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

      @@Gander047you could easily just Google this yourself, but in short: Czechoslovakia was given the territory to create the so-called Bratislava Bridgehead as a defensive measure against Hungary. The only significance of the towns were their location.
      As for why Hungary wasn’t punished, part of it is because of lessons learned by the western allies following the Treaty of Versailles, and part is because Hungary fought Germany alongside the Allies near the end of the war. Similar benevolence was given to other former axis allies in a similar situation during the Paris Peace Treaties of 1947.

    Finland's true goal was essentially this:
    1. Restore pre winter war borders (Official state policy)
    2. Annex East Karelia to unify with the Karelian people (Might as well since we're already at war)
    Anything beyond this was just the fantasy of nationalists.

      Finns were the only "good guys" on the Axis side. Change my mind.
      They were the only axis nation that wasn't fascist, but a Western democratic state like USA, UK and France. They were also the only one that didn't join Hitler's "crusade against the judeo-bolshevism" out of pure nationalism, fascism or Nazi sympathies, but because they were brutally invaded by the Soviet Union during the Winter War just a year earlier, which resulted in the loss of 11% of Finnish territory, along which 10% of the Finnish population had to flee their homes. (It's important to know that this land that the Soviets annexed from Finland wasn't some "contested" territory that had both pro-Soviet and pro-Finnish people living on it and that nationalists from both Finland and Russia had claimed and fought over in the past, but a 100% undisputed part of Finland whose every citizen felt themselves as 100% a Finnish citizen. When the Soviets took this land, literally EVERY SINGLE ONE of the 400 000 people living in there fled to Western Finland, and the Soviets received the land completely EMPTY.). The Finns obviously wanted to get back this land that the Soviets had annexed from them, but also the Soviets kept constantly threatening them with a second invasion and a full annexation even after the Winter War had officially ended. On top of that, Finland was also facing a severe shortage of food after the Soviets occupied 30% of their most productive farmland, and that could have resulted in a catastrophic famine in the country.
      So they desperately needed someone as an ally to sell them weapons and cheap grain. And because allying with the Western Allies wasn't possible anymore after the German occupation of Denmark and Norway, the only remaining option was the Nazi Germany, who then obviously demanded Finland to help them in Operation Barbarossa as a price to pay for their aid and protection (and of course a lot of Finns also wanted to counterattack the Soviets anyway to get the occupied land back, so they were not that hesitant to fulfill this German demand). But it's important to understand that Finland was not IDEOLOGICALLY an ally or supporter of the Axis, only militarily. There was very little support to fascism in Finland, and they didn't fight FOR Nazism or the Axis, they only fought WITH them and used the Axis military aid to help their own country in a very difficult situation. They were ideologically pretty much on their own side, even though they militarily joided the Axis because they were stuck between rock and a hard place, being threatened by the Soviet Union and a famine and having a very important piece of their land just recently taken away from them.
      Also while it's true that the Finns committed some shameful acts and war crimes (like almost evert country in history that has participated in wars), they were nowhear near to be even compearable to the systematic mass-murder of millions or hundreds of thousands of innocent people that the other Axis powers (the Nazis obviously, but also other smaller Axis countries like Romania, Hungary and Italy) committed. The Finnish war crimes were almost as "mild" in number and brutality as the crimes committed by the Western Allies (Britain, USA, etc). Finland was the only Axis country that protected its Jews from Hitler, and treated them as completely equal citizens like the Allies did, and many Finnish Jewish heroes actually fought alongside the regular Finns for the country's independence agains the Soviet invaders. When Himmler visited Finland and offered German help to "solve Finland's Jewish peoblem", Finnish prime minister Jukka Ragnell famously responded to him: "Finland has no Jewish problem".

The territory in question was acquired from Romania before either became Axis states. And Romania lacked North Transylvania upon joining the Axis. Kinda funny that Greece was on the winning side of all three conflicts
    (Obviously there were more nations on each side [Well, more nations against the Ottomans in the first Balkan War, more nations against Bulgaria in the second, and then obviously the third one was WW1 so there were a lot on both sides] but it's funny to look at it as just these three countries)

    Video 17 of asking the best history youtuber to do "what if everything went perfect for britan" 🙏 i got a form of a script her to help narrow it. have things like britan already making efforts to keep the dominons more integrated from their creation (Canada in the early 1800s, Australia in the late 1800s being more lenient with the black south african population) upon American independence only giving up the southern and mid lands keeping the north outside 13 colonies being much kinder to the Indian population and somewhat caring for their well being (delays Indian indepence) and most importantly forming a federal union with the dominons (aside from India that's impossible) being smarter in ww1 (doing the high lord admirals strategy) and doing being a bit better in ww2 Churchill can't become pm under any circumstances as he will bankrupt britan and sell the empire off to America. For the cold war not much has changed apart from a federalised state between britan and the settler states, I'd predict india still getting independence in mabye 1956 (later but not late) eygpt following soon after now let's skip to 1963 (random year idk when it would happen) eygpt nationalised the suez this upset france and britan who along with Israel millatary intervene tge federation takes the suez canal and france is there as emotional support or whatever they do, amercia and the Soviets both order them to back down yap yap yap until we have the federation not back down and france joins both refusing to leave until they get what they want, the federation promises Portugal they'd help if they have rebellions in the colonies in return Portugal gives their support, here there's a full blown western crisis as nato is about to disintegrate as here britan is much stronger (not on amercias level but still very powerful, the Soviets also quiet down for the best chance of nato breaking apart) not like in our timeline where they were collapsing. Here we have 2 routes one where amerca backs down another where they refuse and nato splits, it's more realistic for amercia to either back down or compromise but since it's perfect for britan they outright back down, britan re occupys the suez france become britans closest ally and vice versa. Nothing here changes execpt from britan mabye keeping more colonies (nothing major) like Somalia the Jamaica and other islands Leone ect, after the cold war the federation becomes the very deserving 2nd super power when china rises I belive the 2 would be nearly identical in power the federation has more potential tho, here amercia would have to consult the federation not being able to act on its own with much of Europe preferring the federation (to be clear amercia Is still easily stronger they just can't do whatever they like) countries like Nigeria, India and others will have the monarch as their head of state while afrcian states Nigeria and eygpt ect (eygpt may very well undergo a revolution following the suez humiliation) during there independence britan (aside from eygpt) will give small loans to help them (mainly to keep good ties with it's former colonies) during the Nigerian civil war britan may actually deploy men to the Nigerian government's side and help crush the uprising leaving Nigeria (in the short term) reliant on britan mabye Myanmar gets independence but during their civil war they get bailed out by the federation and pretty much become a defacto puppet reliant on the federation. From here I don't have much more but I tried to keep it realistic but I had to bend it a little. Before I forget the main reason amercia would back down is because britan held all the uranium amercia used if that was leveraged America would have little choice. So at the end we have a larger (expanded in the west coats) Canadian territory same Australia a more wealthy south african territory the suez canal and good relationships with it's old colonies (plus a defacto puppet over Myanmar) and a large British federation Oh and they keep Hong kong (I'm actually from Hong Kong if you wanted to know half Ethiopian born with by an Ethiopian mother and a dad from Hong Kong) if you couldn't tell I've thought about this alt history a lot

    While it would have been interesting to see something outlined about the Slovak State's goals in wars against Poland and Hungary, it probably wouldn't beg much more analysis than 'nigh-on unachievable to have far grander goals' and its obvious nonexistence by the end of the war invalidates the ability or need to evaluate 'how it did' (esp. regarding the foreword at the start in how it doesn't justify entrance into the war)
