Thank you everyone for checking out the playtest build of our game Bladesong! After spending quite some time in "tech demo" stage making sure that people can go totally ape in Creative Mode (and boy have they done that, making about every sword in the book as well as axes, spears, sniper rifles, an ashtray and a frog), this is the first time we're showing a preview of Campaign Mode. It's early, we're testing the very core and there certainly are blind spots in QoL and tutorialization, but if you're willing to go through that, you can still join the playtest until Monday, Dec 16, 10 am PT/6 pm GMT. Cheers! ⚔ David and the Bladesong team
Mate, this is going to be *the* swordsmithing game! Having so much fun with it rn, even just doing the basic order. And the skill system, all the possible sword(and hopefully not just sword) types to make, all the shop sim aspects to deal with! And there seem to be a solid text RPG as well. Can't wait for the full release!
Let me recommend you contact Alec Steele, Skallagrim and Shadiversity. Alec is a blacksmith and the other 2 deal in historical and functional melee weaponry. Between them, they could probably give you some recommendations and ideas that might let you tighten up and expand what you're doing here.
Same, I never actually heard of anyone else using it other than when I was taught in college around 2005-07. 3ds and Maya were the big ones at the time.
It looks like someone played the smithing part of Bannerlord and thought there needed to be an entire in depth game made out of it which is pretty cool
37:13 that was a very prolific pommel style during the height of the European Viking era, approximately 1000-1100 AD, if I'm not mistaken. Warriors with a bit of dosh really liked to show off their haul by decorating and embellishing their weapons, when possible--sometimes ceremonially, sometimes on the weapons they took on raids. As a side note, they also believed that forging a blade with the bones of a bear would impart the spirit of the bear, making the blade stronger. What they were doing on a molecular scale was adding carbon to their steel, giving it a more hardenable metallurgic profile. Ancient humans may not have had the scientific method as we know it, but they were incredibly observant and adaptable.
That's a really cool anecdote about the addition of bear bones to iron and how they noticed blades made with bear bones were actually stronger. And big shout out to the big knuckle head who was the first one to try that, you absolutely know he just thought it'd be cool😂😂😂😂. "See this knife Ivor? I made it with flicking bear bones my brother." *Ivor soy facing* "That is a sick thing you have done brother" -Ivor probably
BAHAHA then the first time they realize it's actually stronger by cutting a normal knife in two "Ivor and knuckle head intensely soy facing at each other in pure amazement* "BEAR KNIFE BROTHER!!!" "BEAR KNIFE!!!" -Ivor and Knuckle Head probably 😂
Medieval and ancient people were no dumber than folks today, they just didn't have the same access to technologies and ideas we have now. In so many fields, and across so many locations and cultures, they could optimise the hell out of things, even if they didn't exactly know *why* that optimised things.
I'd love to see this system tweaked and added to RPGs with blacksmithing. It would be fun to make swords to meet desired effects, ie. various monster weaknesses, defeat armor, etc.
This returned me to my youth and the countless hours spent designing swords on paper. Looking forward to checking out this game, thanks for showing this to us Splattercat!
Seems really unique, yeah, in a nice way. I guess this would be 100% up my alley if you had factions and choices, like, you can't make all the swords they need, which ones do you choose? Who do you side with, who do you leave without blades to defend themselves? How that impacts one the last bastions of humanity? Can you make personal connections? I know these are extra systems, but they would make you really think about the person you're making your sword for, and thus make you shape it up to the occasion, which only makes it all cooler and more creative.
The first ability applied on a blade is Draw Out. In creative mode, you do it yourself and can change it any time, but in the campaign, you can't change it. Maybe it's a skill that you can acquire.
Getting half way through this video, I feel like the game needs to include the actual forging mechanics as gameplay and not just a design stage to be of any interest to me.
Yeah this is a cool weapon designing system but I'm not sure this has enough meat on the bones to really be a satisfying overall gameplay experience. Adjust the sliders until the weapon is good, sell for money, read lore, repeat. It seems to lack an actual GOAL for the player to achieve? Maybe that comes later in the story or something. But I'd like to see a more in depth game where you use your profits as a blacksmith to upgrade your home and then the town and become a leader of the community or something like that. Something that makes it feel as though you're working towards something and not just amassing gold for the sake of gold.
I’m with you here, I was really missing seeing some kind of actual forging here. At least the option of seeing it on the anvil was nice, put it into the right setting at least. But also this other comment about being a goal very much. This feels like a really well made part of something else
Making :Forged in Fire" into a game actually sounds like an awesome idea! Just sprinkle in a bit of magic crafting so that we can craft swords from our favorite magical universe then I think we're golden! Also, it would be kinda cool if there was a way for you as a renowned bladesmith to see where your blades go and what history they develop (like a simple masterpiece that becomes a legend in a thousand years).
12:12 - Yup, I made a sword that would probably work better as a frying pan or a fly-swatter, and the dude was happy with it - got the bonuses too. Edit: and you don't even need a guard or grip - the dude will take with only a pommel.
If you hit the button next to symmetry, it pulls up a cross sectuon view, allowing you to fine tune sharpness and thickness. Its much more important use however, is that it shows you the blades weight, and the changes in weight before you apply your forging. Helps a ton later on with more advanced tools and finicky deaigns.
I wish this had more varieties of weapons. Spears, axes, halberds, or even other varieties of swords outside the straight cruciform longswords, like falchion, kriegsmesser, sideswords, kilij, szabla, shashka, talwar, pulwar, dao, jian, parang, katana, tsurugi etc
I have not played the playtest but from what testers say you can already curve the swords so some of your wish is already in the game. For spears and axes and so on they said they would first focus on swords but maybe add other weapons later.
Of all the games that aren't for me, this one is probably the most not for me. I have never been so bored by the concept of the game. I really hope it turns out amazing for the niche it fills though.
@@TheVigilante2000 it goes on the lines of Powerwash Simulator and the layered puzzles. People that enjoy focus on a particular task and grinding on low advancement will do good
I want to go to the car dealership and say, Sir I am 82% satisfied with this car you have presented to me. Is there a chance you could bring in the look a bit more by widening the glove compartment, adding more cup holders, and also widening the wheels?
The blacksmithing here is more detailed, looks like I can relaxingly build cool Witcher swords. I really enjoyed another, simpler blacksmithing game, While the Iron is Hot, good story, wonderful soundtrack.
Best comment section ever - half "wow so cool!" and half "ew gross who would ever want to play that?" To the second group, try imagining other people exist sometime, it's a neat exercise. (I am in camp "not for me, but I'm happy for its audience, doesn't look like they get a lot of options in this niche.)
37:22 I'm going to just choose to believe that jump cut was inserted at that point in the video because the prior rant about Renn-faire swords wound up going on for WAAAYYYY longer than originally intended.
Looks like a great narrative RPG and a great blacksmithing simulator, but they do have to find a way to make the two actually connect with each other imho.
I keep thinking, "I love Splat but his swords are lame." I don't know if it is possible, but I think it would be insanely cool to make some swords in this game that can be tested in a combat game. Then the most elite players would have weapons from the most elite swords craftmen.
Right up my alley dude, thanks for covering this. It's good to take a break from all the shooting and punching games once in a while. Though I think it could definitely benefit from having the narrative aspects more integrated with the crafting. Like the people at the den commission you for swords and how you perform actually has an effect on the story etc
Sad it`s only about forging not showing the weapon in action. I hope someone, someday will make a game as good as the Armor Games donkey blacksmith doing all sorts of weapons for heroes slaying monsters. I believe "Jacksmith" was the title and it was amazing.
Forging in Bannerlord is a pleasant process with the cool level gradation, hundreds of parts and real stats that you can see in the combat, but have a weird balance sometimes
17:00 Seems like bladesmithing is your day job. After hours you hang out at the tavern and look for side work, or work as an agent of this "Masked King" or whatever the "story" is. Makes sense that your day job is separate from your side gig.
So, in Bannerlord I just give myself 2 free stat points instead of losing time engaging with all that blacksmithing system. Here, the whole game is blacksmithing. The best thing I can say about this is that I admire people who put in the time and other resources to make their dreams a reality. I'd rather be blacksmithing for real.
Just a question; does anyone know if Splatt stopped streaming? It's cool if he has things to do and I wish him the best on his life's journey! Just wondering.
Feel like you need to also have a forging minigame of some kind or the ability to even test or try your swords. This seemed like it would be for me but it honestly really isn’t
One thing annoyed me around 10:26 : it seems peculiar to widen a blade after the fact, I mean after you already hammered down a fine shape or near final shape. You would need to bash it down to be thinner and wider, which can be good or bad, but certainly not very obvious in my layman opinion. Seems odd anyhow.
Tutorial does not explain this, but the balance seems to be counted only after all the elements are in place. Also - the tooltip tells that balance depends on the ratio of weights of the hilt and the blade. Not really a good job explaining this in the tutorial :P
10:51 - That's why I quit playing it, lol. Once you get to the action point part, fidgetting around screws you over then you have to wait a day, but you only have like 3 days to build a sword, so that will need fixed. Also I agree with the tutorialization - the game just drops you in the deep end and expects you to pull yourself out, which isn't bad per se since you can learn on your own, but it really needs that option. Especially for the Creation mode when it just throws everything at you - someone might buy the game and not want to play the story; they just want to make cool swords.
What a shame this is more a piece of of a sword customization software than a blacksmithing game, I mean you don't even get to hammer it, what's the point?
"Gaining weight is harder than losing weight. It's the opposite of real life". Bullshit, Splattercat. All you have to do to lose weight is eat less. Eat less calories than you burn. If you want to gain weight, you not only have stuff yourself, but there's a monetary commitment (buying the extra food) and a time commitment (preparing the food, sitting down to eat the food). That being said, I'd rather be skinny than fat. I love your videos.
So it's like click and drag AutoCAD for swords.. where is the game? This is a sword design simulator which might be kinda interesting to some folks but I see no gameplay loop whatsoever. No anvil or forging minigame at all you just click on the sword and then click to sell it.... Boring
It's more or less a creative thing, if you like sitting for an hour getting creative with the sword design or 3d modeling it'll probably eat a lot of your time but if not the two halves of the game don't blend enough to hold a general audience. It's a niche title for people that like to open a cardboard box of legos and just kinda go with it even though there's no reason to do it. You pass the workorders with a stick looking sword just as well as with one that spent 3 hours making look badass. It's unique and for a very very specific audience and nobody else outside that wheelhouse. I used to 3d model so I found it interesting but until the rest of the rpg mechanics and world stuff are integrated into the building it'd be something I fire up for an hour once a week to get the creative juices flowing while I listen to a podcast.
