  • In this video I talk about the connection between acetaminophen and autism and ADHD. I share a popular study that was publish in 2018, which you can fine at doi.org/10.1093/aje/kwy086. I will explain the findings and what it does and does not mean in terms of whether Tylenol causes autism(does acetaminophen cause autism) or not. However, I do want to mention that studies like this are shedding light on the need of better future studies but this can also be hurtful to the autistic community. Autism is not a disease and many are not looking to be "cured", therefore looking for "causes of autism or ADHD" might be hurtful because what the neurodivergent community needs and wants is true inclusion and acceptance.

Whenever this study is brought up, people miss out on two completely fundamental facts relating to it.
#1: the study did not take into account nor screen the parents who reported Tylenol usage for ASD or ADHD.
#2: people who have ASD or ADHD have higher rates of chronic and more severe pain, higher rates of inflammation, and higher rates of fevers.
We know that people who have ASD and ADHD are far more likely to have children with those same conditions. We know that people who suffer from chronic pain, inflammation, and fevers are more likely to have prolonged usage of pain relievers, fever, reducers, and anti-inflammatories. We know that pregnant people can safely take very few drugs that relieve pain, reduce fevers and reduce inflammation. We know that Tylenol (acetaminophen) is considered the safest pain reliever, fever, reducer, and anti-inflammatory for pregnant people.
When you look at this data with the complete context, it seems kind of like a "Well, nah duh" that there would be a correlation between the pregnant people with a prolonged usage of acetaminophen and people who've had children with ASD and ADHD. This is probably because those two groups are the same people, parents who have ADHD and ASD themselves.
Obviously, more thorough studies that actually take into account the family history of the participants in regards to ASD and ADHD should be done to verify that this is a correlational relationship and not a causational one. But when you look at the bigger picture, it seems obvious that there would be this correlation here.
Running high fevers during pregnancy can cause devastating effects to both a parent and their baby. Please do not let this study scare you away from using acetaminophen to reduce your fevers during pregnancy. We have proven that there is causation between rampant fevers and so many different complications and defects, but we only have some very generalized and flawed data showing a solely correlational relationship between acetaminophen use and ADHD and autism.
You put yourself and your baby at a much greater risk of harm by strictly abstaining from acetaminophen than you do by taking it as recommended and as needed.

Thank you for your input. I do agree with your point and I stated many of them in this video. It is important for pregnant women to be aware of the whole picture and always think about their safety as well as their unborn child’s. 👍🏽

What is considered excessive use? I have probably taken about 8 acetaminophen’s but spread out through 25 weeks. Not sure if my question makes sense.

I think something like daily for several weeks was considered “excessive use” but don’t quote me on that.

Did the report talk about dosage? My doctor has me on 2 baby aspirin everyday to prevent preeclampsia…

The article only says “excessive” use I believe. A different study found that if used 8 day or less there was no adverse outcome correlated.
      Hope this helps.

You used the pills very little so it should not have an impact on your child.

I understand were you’re coming from and I hear you. However, I think so autistic people might feel bad because they don’t feel like autism is something to fear. But autism has a wide spectrum and not everybody feels that way.
I think it is important to keep in mind that everyone is entitled to their opinion.
