    May I suggest rebuilding thus rig in sc40 pvc? Cellular core ABS turns brittle under UV, also the joints like to pop loose with vibration. Not to mention that ABS is toxic, and even though this is a shower and not drinking water, you may want to think about it.

      He should also use real schedule 40 pvc that's rated for pressure and not the non rated stuff in a big box store.

      I understand showers, I really do. But if you’re going cross country in the desert, it’s only prudent to make every water reservoir safe for potable water. You can still shower with it but using pressure rated schedule 40 pvc pipe will keep the water drinkable.

      Also you don’t want to put ABS under pressure.

    It may be a little more expensive but I suggest solid core pvc pipe with pressure fittings and 711 pvc glue. ABS cans may say rated for 180psi but left unpainted and in the sun it becomes very brittle. Exposed ABS longevity is very short. Also recommend brass female adapters due to cracking threads on the plastic female ends. Just ideas

    Thank you! I live in Malaysia but don't have a hot water heater plumbed to my shower. Most days it's ok but during monsoon season the stainless steel holding tank makes chilly showers. However, it's sunny most mornings, even during monsoon season, so I think this pipe set up facing the morning sun would make a nice warm shower around noon time. Yaay!.

  • @chrisnoyes9397
    @chrisnoyes9397 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I did this for a truck and ran into the online suggestion panel saying that ABS pipe can leach BPA's into your water if exposed to direct sunlight. It's not meant for direct sunlight exposure. It was recommended to paint CPVC or PVC.

    Love the idea with the U bend. One issue that I ran into was, when the water begins to run out, outlet would spurt. I had to add a wedge towards the front of the tank so the water wouldn't level out below the outlet.

  • @outdoortrials

    Plumber here. I like the idea however some for thought in the future. ABS plastics are mainly designed for sewage waste disposal. PVC would be a far saver plastic to use. The glue used for PVC plastic piping is not going to contaminate your water if you use any of it for drinking (or cooking). Also You can paint the PVC if you would rather it be black. ABS plastic after being exposed to heat (such as sunlight) can leak chemicals from the plastics into the water. This is the reason behind using it for waste rather than for potable water. Also some areas are doing away with ABS due to it failing in long term use more so than PVC.
    With this said. I really like your build and the execution of making it. Looks really good.

      Hello! I am building one of these for my tacoma and was wondering if you could help point me in the right direction as I would like to build this as correctly as possible. I am using a 6" by 5' schedule 40 PVS pipe with no turns. It will just have 2 end caps. I was going to use a different pvc cement that he used and use a primer. Any recommendations would be helpful. I was planning on using the same hose barrel, valve stem and bulkheads but use WaterWeld (JB Weld) on the inside of each fitting that needs a hole drilled instead of just using the pvc cement to seal it. I also am leaning towards not using any of the rubber washers since it may create uneven surfaces if tightened too tight (still thinking on this). I think the JB weld will be strong enough to hold the pressure regardless but I figure more flat and even the surface the better. Any other changes you could provide would be very helpful. If you don't think some of my changes are good, please let me know. Any other plumbers or anyone who knows what they are doing are more than welcome to help out as well

      @outdoortrials 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cmatties1 honestly the rubber gaskets as long you clean the burs off should be good. As for the sloshing. What are you mounting it in or on? You will habe around 50 pounds of water (rough estimate)

    • @outdoortrials
      @outdoortrials 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @cmatties1
      @cmatties1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@outdoortrials I am going to mount it on my bed rack right next to my roof top tent. There is room for it there. I am thinking of using a conduit carrier kit mount. I can just bolt that to my bed rack. I did see a video where someone added a couple floor drain covers on the inside to stop the water in 2 places. Do you know if a 6" SDR 35 drain gate will fit the inside of a 6" Schedule 40? Are you referring to 3m adhesive tape? or are you thinking of something different?

    Nice job, certainly one of the better on TH-cam.
    Worth mentioning that 4” pipe gives you 200mL (0.05 US gal) per inch of pipe.
    I estimate you to have 8ft of pipe on your roof so your looking at 20 litres(5 gal). Not really enough for a real shower.
    I managed to squeeze 20ft of 4” pipe on my roof and it is only really enough to have 2 or 3 quick showers and maybe to rinse the dishes for a few days.

    Hi mate, greetings from the UK. This is a brilliant idea, I'm well impressed and will be making one of these for my mini bus conversion.
    On a side note, can you consider making a video with a basic 'mock-up' of one of these to see how much pressure it will take before it splits or blows one of the end caps off, it would be interesting to see where the weak point is and lets face it, everybody loves a TH-cam video where something gets blown up!!
    All the best mate.

    nice work. the only thing i'd change is the spout and schraeder valve. i'd put the spout on the bottom and SV on top. reason being is the spout at the top will render the water below it useless as one the air inside is exposed to the spout internal opening the pressure will just leave the spout without the water. whatever that point is all the water left is water you can't ever get to before the air spout exposure

  • @ianmburke

    A feature to consider but I don't know if necessary, would be some form of baffles in the tube. If the tank was half full it would be about 30lbs able to slosh from front to back and side to side (imagine the body roll if off camber) and it is so high over the center of gravity... just my thoughts- otherwise amazing work and super awesome idea 💡

    • @wormfighter1
      @wormfighter1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Ya at 1/2 full it will create a water hammer that could easily blow out the ends of the pvc. Imagine a 30 pound ball slamming forward under a hard breaking situation.

    • @wyattb995
      @wyattb995 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good point, wonder how much flow and slosh reduction there is with just adding a few extra bends and turns in the run.
      Or if slapping a butterfly valve in the center of each long run would do the job well enough.

    great build, I like the idea of shooting the pipes down the middle. Mine goes around the outside. You may want to consider a way to vent the pipe as you fill it or you wont be able to fill it all the way. On my build, I use my spare tire to pressurize the shower. Only needs a quick burst to get pressurized water without messing with a compressor.

    You built a P trap. You cannot fully drain the tank if it’s not perfectly level. You need to use “T”’s at the front so both legs are joined at both ends. Then parking slightly nose down will let it fully drain.

      I was thinking you could add a low point where the water will sit even at the lowest level, the. plumb a tube from your spigot into that low point, and when the pressure increases the only way for it to escape is to push every last drop of water before it will begin to spurt. Another improvement already mentioned are interior baffles to combat sloshing

    Now the thing I see that I would do different than what everyone is doing is I would make a smaller diameter tube and make it square and depending on the size of your rv/truck/etc you can add rows for what ever volume you need. This distributes the weight evenly and it also is more surface area for the water to heat up. You could also make it hinged so it could be angled toward the sun. I have seen a similar design from a friend and it would get super hot like too hot but that was in Texas. If I knew I would be dealing with that I might make a cold water mix. You could also just make a separate pvc pipe pump that has a valve for filling but also a valve that connects to the water so you could pressurize it first then release it. Then you could judge the size you need for the length of shower you want. I also have a 12v outlet in the back of my Element and I have a airpump for my tires that I could set to 30 psi and just push a button when its starts to fade.

    Looks okay until the water level is down. Trying to get it to leach through to the end might be hard to do. Having that long of a run there’s going to be a lot of standing water you can’t get and you have to be perfectly level.

Could you tell me where I can purchase or order the exact connectors you used to connect your adjustable pressure valve to your ABS ? When I made something similar, I made the water outlet also function as the inlet. In your design, this would mean that you could have two inlets and outlets. The shut off valve is convenient for when full. You simply fill, close the valve, and detach the hose.
