  • The error message, "Movie recording has been stopped automatically," explained with the Canon EOS 60D DSLR Camera.
From page 171, Cards which can record movies: When shooting movies, use a large-capacity SD card with SD Speed Class 6 "Class 6" or higher rating. If you use a slow-writing card when shooting movies, the movie might not be recorded properly. And if you playback a movie on a card having a slow reading speed, the movie might not playback properly.
    Following information is from en.wikipedia.or...
The Canon EOS 60D is a digital single-lens reflex camera from Canon. It is part of the Canon EOS line of cameras and succeeds the EOS 50D. It was publicly announced on August 26, 2010.
    Compared to 50D:
Resolution increase to 18.1 megapixels (50D has 15.1)
Maximum Sensitivity increased to ISO 6400 (12800 as optional setting) (50D has max 3200 ISO)
Video recording, with same controls as the 550D
Manual control of audio recording (Same as newer firmware on 5D MkII)
Articulating screen with a slightly higher resolution in 3:2 ratio (50D has 4:3)
Lower maximum burst frame rate of 5.3 fps (50D maximum is 6.3 fps)
SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot (50D uses CompactFlash)
Smaller and lighter polycarbonate resin with glass fibre on aluminium chassis (50D has Magnesium alloy body)
    Wireless Speedlite control
Lack of AF micro-adjustment feature (included in 50D)
Redesign of controls -- multi-controller has been relocated to center of quick control dial; top buttons of 60D control only one setting.
    Locking mode dial
Electronic level that can be viewed in the viewfinder, rear LCD monitor, and top LCD panel
LP-E6 battery, as used in the 5D MkII and 7D
Lack of PC socket for Flash Synchronization
External shutter release port changed from 'Canon N3' socket to 3/32"(2.5mm) TRS pin.

Hey guys, I had the same problem as you all but I figured why it may be doing that. Check your settings on the ISO, auto lighting options, recording size, movie exposure. If you lower ISO and other settings and set your options up as needed. Then it will record longer. Changed most things to manual as well, I disabled by auto lighting optimizer as well. I don't know if this helps any of you, but it is working for me for now. Just tested it and I stopped it at 12 minutes, didn't even think it could record for that long with high quality. I hope this helps!

Try making another folder in your memory card within the camera menu ,that way it'll be sorta faster, also warming up the camera for a minute is recommend so that you won't get the error everyday

  • @Supacomputer

It worked for my 60D camera with the card shown (transcend); might be due to different names of cards a person is using or other reasons suggested in the comments (e.g. formatting).

Ideally, try an SDXC card (min. 20 mb/s speed) and not SDHC but if you do it should be class 6 and NOT class 10. A class 10 SDHC is for capacity and class 10 SDXC is for quality and capacity.
Consider this: for a 640x480 video you need a card that can do 2.75mb/s at least and the limit of class 4 card is 4 mb/s so it doesn't record 1920x1080 full HD.
Go to kingston's website and check out their 'sd cards' details and go to wiki and check their 'comparison of memory cards'.
    Hope it helps.

I have managed to figure this out. I am using a 16GB Class 10 Full HD card from FujiFilm. It happens when trying to record at 25fps. You need to drop this down to 24fps. To do this press Menu > Movie rec. size > 1920x1080 24 . This worked for me, I hope it works for the rest of you. I think it happens because of the fps.
    I hope this helps :)

@PUPPETyellow the answer has got to be on google somewhere, on some forum. I was looking, some were blaming the card, but I am not sure...sorry. I was kinda lucky this example worked for me.

@PUPPETyellow What brand of SD card are you using? I am using a Patriot class 10 32gb. It works. I even asked the employees at FRYS to make sure that it works before I bought it. Hope this helps. And ask the employees at the place you buy your cards too. They should know.

LOW LEVEL FORMAT the card! I still get the issue from time to time when the sensor is overwhelmed, due to a shift from Low light to Bright light.
Aside from that, just learn how to not overwhelm your cameras sensor. Drawback of a DSLR Video Cam....sucks I know, but the picture is so good!

If you've a class 6 or above card and this still happens to you, its not actually the card problem, its a battery issue. I found cleaning my battery contact plates fixed it, as i've a 30mbps sandisk class 10. The card write speed only comes into play if the battery is supplying enough power to the card itself and if it stops after a few seconds its probably that. Switch out batteries too, and buy new ones.

i have the same problem , Canon and TEDs shop said that there is no issues till I went to Consumer Affairs . Then they said its a card issue and have to use Class 10 .Now I can see people with Class 10 having the issue .The Camera even stops within few seconds of shooting video that too with few seconds of powering on .

I was looking around in the instructions manual a while ago (whut omg) and I rememeber reading from the section about movie recording, "Due to restrictions of the file system, video recording stops automaticly if the video size is 4gb." Now if your running on 1920x1080p. Also if internal temperatures inside the camera rises that bar will light up, Again if you turn down the quality you should be fine thumbs up if this helped at all.

@storm180 This seems to have worked for me. I've had my 60D for several months and have been using the same memory card without issues. That is, until Christmas morning. I was trying to capture my kids as they came into the room with the tree and it kept stopping. Tonight, I sat down to try to resolve the issue. So, after it stopped automatically, I did nothing but switch the camera to off, then back on. Pressed the camera icon and began recording. It's working perfectly again!

    Hi,
I have a class 6 Sandisk recommended and given by the TEDs sydney shop. Even formatting doesnt help . Now they are recommending to use class 10 . but according to this forum even Class 10 has issue , so is that a camera issue or camera production batch issue?

  • @OutwardElementStudio
    @OutwardElementStudio 12 ปีที่แล้ว

Thats a separate problem with all cameras that shoot to SD cards. The maximum file size allowed is a 4gig file which equates to about 10-15 minutes of continuous video time. Therefore, when the camera is recording once it hits that limit, it has to stop. No matter what card you get you will have the 14min record problem

  • @Hwang_Over
    @Hwang_Over 12 ปีที่แล้ว

I also have a class 10 and this happens on my t2i. Now one thing I do and it solves the problem is doing a "low level format" that is found in the menu. This will clear up the space on the memory card, but what is annoying is that if you take some pictures and then want to take some videos it will freeze up again.

I Purchased a SanDisk Extreme Pro. The reason your camera is doing this is due to the Read/Write speed of the card. Purchase a good card. Mines now 95MB/s and haven't had problem since.

Its because you are trying to record in 1280p or 1080p try recording in the lowest format (640/30) and it will work. If you want to record in 1280 or 1080 you need 95MB and you wont have any problems. Nothing is wrong with your card it just cant Read/write that fast.

I have the class 10 32gb SanDisk Ultra card. I formatted the SD card as instructed in the Canon t3i owners manual and the very first video I ever recorded with this camera only lasted about 5 seconds before it stopped recording automatically. And it still does it frequently. So it's not the SD card it's more like the camera has a serious bug that Canon NEEDS TO FIX!!!

This video is wrong. As has been said by so many people already, I have a class 10 card, SanDisk Ultra 64 GB, and the camera will start to show that error message with no rhyme or reason every once in a while. Once it's doing it, it will only record for a second or two, then the error. But then it will go weeks without a problem recording long videos, with the same card and equipment. Makes no sense...

I have not found a real solution yet. Any other ideas?

ITs not only the class of the card .the card has to be about 45 mb WRIGHT SPEED and higher. Anything under that is too slow for the quality of the camera. That bar on the right is a buffering sign. so find a card with a good class and a good MB WRIGHTSPEED i hoped this helped good luck to all!

I see that you are recording a black screen. On my 5D mkIII if I leave it on auto iso and shoot a very dark scene this will happen on all my cards. When the gauge starts to ramp up if I pan to a well-lit shot the problem goes away. My slowest card which has a write speed of 7.5MB/s (Black Magic Disc Speed Test) has no problem on a well-lit (low ISO) scene.

Great information for the newbies. However, you can still get the same message on a 32gb/64gb class 10 if you have failed to format the camera properly. Just DELETING the pictures and video from an SD/SDHC card is not enough.
Also, if MAGIC LANTERN is installed, then you will have to use the LOW LEVEL format that will allow you to keep it installed on the card.

PROBLEM SOLVED. Anyone doing video should use a class 10 card. BUT people can still have this problem too with a class 10. EVEN AFTER formatting the card a deleting all the data from the card. This problem can still happen.
The real problem is a mystery, and I believe I have figured it out. It has to do with the brand that you used for the very first time with your camera. I read in the feed from another video that a guy used a Lexar card when he first got his camera. When he uses a Sandisk he gets this message. Well when I use a Sandisk I don't get this problem because it was the first card I used. When I use a $100 Hoodman Steel HDSC class 10 card I get this message.
Try using the original brand of SD card that you used first. I believe Canon cameras love the first card. If this is not the answer than there isn't anything else to solve the problem. Using a different card doesn't work, and formatting doesn't fix it either.

I am trying to find out by calling support on Tuesday if it is due to size of the card or if I need to flash my Camera it is disturbing that we all spend so much on the camera's and it sucks.

Speaking of SD/SDHC cards, never use the PNY brand. For some reason CANON cameras may or may not recognise the card and your computer definitley won't UNLESS you have an external card reader. SANDISK and KINGSTON are the way to go.

Hey guys, for those who have a decent SD card and still get the same problem it depends if you want to record really long videos: most DSLR's cannot record over 30 minutes straight even with a class 999 SD card because of legal reasons...
Companies hinder the record times on cameras to pay less taxes to the product, because if they record over 30 minutes they no longer count as "photo camera" and count as "video camera" which implies more taxes, sadly this is a better strategy for companies (they lose less money than paying more taxes and including like the 1% consumers that want to record long times).
If you guys have cannon you can try out magic lantern software and trigger auto-record ON as a path solution.
