Thanks for your videos. I know this vid is old and you've moved on the bigger and better things, but us new guys appreciate the succinct delivery and down to earth suggestions you have.
I'm going for a more vlog / run and gun style video / videos for my channel. what would be the best setting for this type of video taking? (no film making, but more everyday type shooting)
I'll have to watch this a few times to get all that in. The more familiar you become with the T2i the more over my head you go. Really great video's, thanks for the time and effort, I'm learning a lot.
Dave, thanks for all the help, I have watched many of your videos (which I consider benchmark quality) & have learned a lot. I am doing indoor talking head videos like yours in a total dark room). I use multiple soft boxes with high wattage bulbs & a black backdrop - and have experimented with various 3 point light placements & different quantity of lights. I am shooing with a Nikon D610 & a Nikkor 24 to 120 lens. I can get everything tuned in but my skin tone. I get brown areas at my receding hair line area & green tones in my neck & forearms. I can't seem to get real good focus on my face, everything else is in focus with respectable color tone. I fine tuning focus specifically my face (in manual focus). I have tried make up & it looks like I am wearing make up. I shoot 24 FPS, 50 aperture, 200 ISO and 6.3 F, as this is what my light meter recommends. I also use a custom white balance based on a shot image of a color card in the same lighting. Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong or how I can improve this condition? Thanks in advance - Steve
Hello Dave! Great videos. I appreciate you paying it forward with awesome info. I have a question. What is a good entry level camera that still produces good quality video? I want to get started but of course money is an issue.
This is definitely going to be helpful for me. I will have to go back and look at the settings that my Canon Rebel T5 is currently on. The problem I am facing is that 1. the images look clear on the LCD but when I upload them they are blurry and 2. the lighting isn't as bright as I want it. I have lighting equipment that has day lights but they really don't brighten that much. I know I have to change the ISO but I have no idea where to even begin with that. When I use Manual Focus I can get a more clear image but its really hard to do this without asking someone to sit in for me to focus on. I do beauty videos where I am the one on camera so I've run into several issues with trying to get the focus correct when filming by myself.
Great vid, all your vid's are very helpful. I have followed your steps in this video (for canon 60D). I have a question though, where do I find my AGC on the menu? thanks.
@gfoster31 do a search on my site for slow motion and you will find some stuff, but I am working on a really comprehensive one on slow motion that should help you - no idea when I will finish it.
Interesting question, actually Moire is different from Banding, Color Banding (pattern noise) may generally occur while using high ISO. I have observed that shooting indoors at night in artificial light leads you to use high ISO, the flickering (due to incorrect shutter speed) may unknowingly result in color banding. I would like to test if the shutter speed affects Moire, thanks for bringing that point.
Watched this so many times I think I know it by heart! lol Great videos Dave, they have helped me a ton, I even bought your course for my T5i and it was a HUGE help. One issue I have is filming in manual that every time I do that, after I get home and look at my video it's not in focus. When I'm filming and look at the video via the lcd on my T5i it looks great, then I get home and it doesn't look so good. My vision isn't that good (thanks to diabetes) so I usually film in full auto but often in my videos you can see the lens focusing in and out during the video, not too pleased with that. Can I focus using the auto focus and then switch over to manual and it hold the focus? I'm a one man show and film all videos not moving from a tripod. Thank you!
***** hi, i too have diabetes but do not have a problema with my sight. it is hard to see thru the 3 inch lcd. i bought a viewfinder and it helped a lot. it´s like having a camcorder. i had the t3i and bought me a canon 70D. the autofocus in video mode is great. look up autofocus for 70D in TH-cam and you will see what i mean. I hardly use the viewfinder anymore because the 70D does the focusing.
Thanks for the video tips you have been sharing. I will be getting the 60D and will be using it to shoot mostly talking heads at chest height and waist height. What lens would you recommend for these positions without having to move the camera in close for the close ups and further back for the slightly distant (*waist) shot. What lens are you using in this video, and how far is the camera away from where you are standing?
hi Dave this is good tip for begineer like me but what type of focus in your lens while making videos are you in manual or auto focus? many thanks! and keep making video!
I agree on pretty much everything Dave said, except the sharpness setting. I like to keep my sharpness setting at 3 or 4. I do this because it´s as close to the sharpness I see on my movie DVDs( blockbuster movies). I have a 42 inch LCD TV and this is the closest I have gotten to look cinematic. The other reason I do this is because I do not have to use unsharp mask in premiere...which slows down rendering. By doing this in cámara, all I have to do is worry about color correction and grading. Mind you, this is my opinión and it Works well for me on my televisión....this is not BlueRay, just your standard DVD. The picture comes out crisp and clean...without artefacting. Give it a try and see what you think!
Dave, great video! I want to walk through homes I have for sale and shoot video. The lighting varies and focus also. What do you recommend for setting on my Canon T3i? Thanks.
kingston and its a class 4 . thanks for your help i will buy a class 10 looking forward to making some videos ...i love your tutorial's would be lost with out people like you so many thanks
Thanks for your video. Your video always healpful specially me. Please sugest me compare Canon Eos 5D mark 2 vs EOS 6D vs GH4 vs Sony A7S which 1 is best for HDSLR video? And canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM, EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM or EF 70-200mm f/4L USM which lance is best for DSLR video?
My plan is to keep the shutter speed at 1/50th and keep the ISO at 400 and operate the exposure by using a combination of the aperture and a graduated ND filter. Left hand on the filter and right thumb operating the aperture. Waiting on the ND filter now - what do you reckon ?
Hello, Great video! I have my camera to shoot video in manual. I can control the shutter speed and aperture but the ISO is set at AUTO. What do I need to do in order to be able to control my ISO? It's so frustrating not being able to control the ISO as I do in manual picture mode. Camera: Canon Rebel T5 Thank you!

Nice video.. I had Canon 60D but i still cannot get the HD output like what u have in your video.. How did you convert your video why its too sharp and clear? Thanks
Hey Dave, what kind of shutter would you take filming a thunder storm? I’d thought such a short event like a lightning requires a much high shutter setting to get it all on film.
Which program have you used to make this video? and render settings if you have for sonyvegas pro to make it look high quality at 360p so viewers don't need to view in 1080p
hello sir, recently I shot my project on 5d mark 2 but while in fcp output I got color waves on character shirt.. so how does it happen.? n hiw should u remove it.?
what kind of sd card you are using on your canon rebel t2i/550d when filming? bec i got a pny 32gb class 10 on my t2i and the video i took is bad, any advise? well ill just wait for your reply
To get the slow motion effect you have to shoot in 60fps and slow it down in your editing software. As far as I know, only the 5D MKIII offers the effect in-camera.
Hey Dave I've recently been shooting music videos with someone and collabing footage. One of us uses a t3i the other a 7d. What would be the best import and export settings for using footage from both cameras, lately I've been seeings interlaced lines and a deduction in quality of the final export.
Hey, how does shutter speed actually effect video on DSLRs ? When I shoot at 30fps, and put the shutter speed at 1/60, what difference does it make if I use another shutter speed ?
The only thing I really need to avoid is the noise in my 550D videos. I bought a 50mm f/1.8 lens, I set the aperture to 1.8, the ISO to 100, and many other tricks I found on the net. But there still is noise in my shootings. What do you suggest to do for low light videos? I film in 50fps but my shutter speed doesn't go under 1/60 and I read I shall set it to 1/50 for low light shooting, but I can't. What shall I do?
hey dave, love your videos, im having problems with my t3i, always get noisy videos eaven with lowest iso at 100 and 160 (ML) i have follow all your recomendations for everything else but cant get rid of that noise :( any advice???
Hey, I am new to film making and I am not sure which dslr to get. I'm thinking of the 600d but if there are better dslr than could you please tell me. Thanks!
Hello mr Darren I have a Canon T3 EOS Rebel DSLR camera and I am trying to figure out what is the best setting for shooting video with so I can do most of my color correction in post production! I am trying to get that film cinematic look in my music video. can you help me please?
Hi Dave can the Saramonic SR AX107 be used to overcome the AGC problem in my Canon D550 Ti2 like the Juicelink box? from watching TH-cam it looks as I have to switch the AGC on the Saramonic, and use the other channel for audio in. thanks for you assistance Macc
Hello from Paris. What you do is really fantastic, you are really an expert. Ah, Americans are really the best in class in imaging. As I am french, I have a stupid question : I have a 7D with EF-S 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 and I really can not get the effect like as with a EF 50 mm 1.8 ( 50 mm is between 18 and 15, isn tit N? ) the one that you are using. Is it normal ? Or, am I really stupid ? Smile.
i can only video for 3 or 4 seconds before it says movie recording has been stopped automatically i have use all the settings that you suggest i am using a SDHC 8gb i am new to this please help thank you very much for your posts they ate great
Here is an important Shutter speed tip, if you are shooting in artificial lighting, make sure the shutter speed is in the multiples of the voltage frequency of your country, for e.g, if you are in US, then set the shutter speed to 1/60; 1/120... since US uses 60Hz, this will avoid "flickering" of light source in your video (to test this point you camera at a TV playing any channel and record and see the results with different shutter speeds). This tip will also avoid banding. For Europe, set th
Everything looks so good and clear and in focus on lcd while I film but on laptop its kinda blurry overexposed and noisy.. is this something with settings or something with laptop.how much should be fstop for indoor filming? And whats merering timer?.it wud mean a lot if u helped.
Tanuellaa hi, everything always looks good in the small lcd...it tricks us. I bought a viewfinder ( like a camcorder has) which magnifys the screen 3 times...here you can see that everything is visible. It helps focus your shots. Before i had this, I shot great shots and when i saw in the computer, almost everything was ruined because it was blurry.
I own a 550D (T2i) and I wanted to ask if I can change shutter speed, or iso settings while filming without the magic lantern update? I have the firm ware version 1.0.9. Thank You
Great review. Bought myself a Canon 70d. Mainly using it for video. I am using a Canon EF 50mm - f/1.4 USM Lens, set my camera to a shutter speed of 1/125 as I was filming at 60fps, aperture at 1.4, ISO to 100, and camera settings to M (manual). The problem was that in sunlight at these settings everything is blown out so the only way to control the exposure is to increase the aperture so you lose that shallow depth of field or change the shutter speed to something much higher as the exposure compensation is non adjustable in the M mode. Any advise? Do I just increase the shutter speed? How would using a higher shutter speed, say 1/4000 affect my video as I have been advised to only use 1/50 when filming at 25fps and 1/125 when filming in 60fps. Am I missing something?
Tom Whitchurch I have since discovered that a variable ND filter will do the trick so I ordered one and tried it the other day. Does exactly what I wanted it to do even in bright sunlight. Brilliant and only a few £. Thanks for your reply.
Tom Whitchurch I used to just set the shutter speed to compensate for the brightness and couldn't figure out why in post production everything looked unnatural, kind of jumpy. I believe its referred to as the staccato effect. Then I read about the importance of using the correct shutter speed. My film looks more natural now. Well worth getting one for those bright sunny days when you need that shallow depth of field especially if, like me, you use an f stop of say 1.4.

A very important notice for Kiss x4 / 550D / Rebel T2i Users ( coz i own one xD ) -----------------MUST READ------- If you notice the focal range is far less than that of when you take a still image, it is because of your exposure compensation. After doing a bit of research, I noticed that. As Dave said, set the exposure to manual, then set the exposure comp. (compensation) via holding the button ( with the AV and the + and the - ) like a shift button, and spinning the wheel. Hope I helped (:

You push the menu button and scroll to the second yellow wrench at the top of the menu. Once on that page you go down to the setting "Video System" and change it to NTSC mode from PAL mode.
Hope that helped you, or maybe you have already figured it out in one month... :)
Nice video.. I had Canon 60D but i still cannot get the HD output like what u have in your video.. How did you convert your video why its too sharp and clear? Thanks
@mosquitoebites I have it listed on my site on my gear page. you are the 2nd person that told me they had an issue with a class 10 card.
Hello, I've a Canon t5i, and I'm trying to achieve a video with black backgroundlike the one you have here, can you share your settings?
you need a green light system
@DannyElExponenteVeVo it is just a cheap black bed sheet and then I crushed the blanks in post.
Hey, Dave. Have you ever tried out the Neat Video noise reducer? I'd love to hear your opinion on it.
Hi Dave, what's the best codec/format to render videos for TH-cam. Your videos are crisp at 360px, mine are soft even in HD. Thanks.

Whats the best shutter speed/camera settings for a basketball game indoors?
if you are trying to autofocus in low light is a small Aputure like F2 or a large Aputure like F16 better. Ive read that between F2 and F2.8 is best.
To get the slow motion effect you have to shoot in 60fps and slow it down in your editing software. As far as I know, only the 5D MKIII offers the effect in-camera.
what do you think about shooting in cinestyle and a marvelcinestyle???
Brilliant! Thanks you!
Dave I am torn between the t2i and the t3i! What will the audio settings feature on the t3i help me achieve par magic lantern?
i have a question. what should i set my bitrate to on magic lantern to get better video quality without the camera over buffering. Thanks
great tutorial
@angelblueyes159 That was my guess that you were using a slower card.

Could you tell me what is your light set up for this video? Thanks a lot.

Tanuellaa hi, everything always looks good in the small lcd...it tricks us. I bought a viewfinder ( like a camcorder has) which magnifys the screen 3 times...here you can see that everything is visible. It helps focus your shots. Before i had this, I shot great shots and when i saw in the computer, almost everything was ruined because it was blurry.
usachef100 can a viewfinder be attached to canon t3i ??
usachef100 btw thanks a lot for helping out :)
you´re welcome sweety!
Tanuellaa yes, most viewfinders fit cámaras with 3 inch lcds. I use the QV-1 Kamerar. You can look it up on TH-cam and see some reviews.
great audio on this video!
Manual ISO (160, 320, etc)
Shutter speed 1/50
Nuetral Picture Profile with Contrast and sharpness all the way down
Done
Am I missing something?
get something called an nd filter (neutral density filter) will stop light entering the camera, hope this helped:)
Tom Whitchurch I have since discovered that a variable ND filter will do the trick so I ordered one and tried it the other day. Does exactly what I wanted it to do even in bright sunlight. Brilliant and only a few £. Thanks for your reply.
Your welcome, i still need to pick one up myself. only got my first dslr today:)
Well worth getting one for those bright sunny days when you need that shallow depth of field especially if, like me, you use an f stop of say 1.4.
ive been trying upping the shutter speed and have had the same problem
how long can you film with camera like that becaus i heart the DSLR get over heated?
Hello from Paris. What you do is really fantastic, you are really an expert. Ah, Americans are really the best in class in imaging. As I am french, I have a stupid question : I have a 7D with EF-S 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 and I really can not get the effect like as with a EF 50 mm 1.8 ( 50 mm is between 18 and 15, isn tit N? ) the one that you are using. Is it normal ? Or, am I really stupid ? Smile. Have a nice day. Vincent
A very important notice for Kiss x4 / 550D / Rebel T2i Users ( coz i own one xD )
-----------------MUST READ-------
If you notice the focal range is far less than that of when you take a still image,
it is because of your exposure compensation. After doing a bit of research, I noticed that. As Dave said, set the exposure to manual, then set the exposure comp. (compensation) via holding the button ( with the AV and the + and the - ) like a shift button, and spinning the wheel.
Hope I helped (:
@exitnc Black bed sheet and then I crush the blacks slightly.
Could you please make a similar video for Nikon? Thanks in advance :)
What format do you use when uploading to TH-cam? - And which editing software do you use?
