IMO, on a photography focal length continuity perspective, instead of upgrading the ultra wide to 48mp they should put that sensor on the telephoto. They can cover 13mm to 24mm focal length with croping 12mp ultrawide. 24mm to 5x zoom with croping 48mp main cam and the 5x telephoto can reach longer if it was croping 48mp instead of 12mp. I guess I will need to wait till next year to replace my 13pro and that is only if they put 3x48mp on all the cam. Just like most of android phone flagship nowadays
The reason they don't use a 48MP on telephoto is because the telephoto sensor is much, much smaller. Same for the ultrawide sensor - the "ultrawide" lens is much more complicated than the "normal wide" lens and the sensor is therefore usually smaller. The primary sensor is always by far the biggest and therefore you can get away with cropping into that one. That's also why the "main" camera is usually by far the best one in low light. As a lifelong Android user, I hate to have to admit it, but iPhone video quality has always been superior to any Android phone. I wish Android can be more competitive in video, but I guess there might be some very deep software limitations inside the Android system.
Samsung appeared to be serious about it on S23 Ultra, but somehow, we didn't see any serious improvements on the S24 series. They should totally do something about this on the next one, they need at least Log Video which Apple has had for 2 years already.

For me, the biggest negative is that they haven’t updated the video stabilisation. I would have hoped it would read out the full 48mp and then crop to 4K to give you GoPro like IS in 4K. But it seems they still read out a 4K image and then crop that (if you enable max stabilisation). It seems like the hardware should be capable if they have upgraded the readout of the main camera.

Trying to figure out what’s the difference between the pro and pro-Max? I went with the 15 Pro Max because of the camera and the larger storage, the screen size was secondary.
I would not can the Main ("Wide") Camera in the Pro "all new". It's the same lens and sensor - the fact that it can transfer data faster does not make it "all new".
Having done a side by side video comparison between an iPhone 11 and 15 Pro, I can tell you there is a significant difference. Ignoring whatever the specs say, you can visually see a big quality improvement, especially in the colours. I would guess there'd be a similar difference between the 12 and 16.
About the screens being "not that bright". Dude! According to actual tests, they're still the second brightest screens on the market when it comes to real world tests! Only a smidge dimmer than the Pixel 9 Pro.
iPhone presents extremely capable cameras for another year. Nothing to scoff at, particularly in the video realm. It’s quite a flex for Apple to record its entire, high-budget keynote on their own devices year after year. And I find iPhone performs better than my OM-1 in certain situations thanks to the advanced computational photography. That said, I’ll admit it sometimes goes too far and I usually prefer results I get from my dedicated mirrorless.

Any tips how to make sure the camera does what I want?
How about mentioning there's no generative AI like Google has, because they do all the processing on device, not by sending your data to the cloud. For some people that's important and they'd take that trade fro extra features. Don't just say it's not doing all that Google does...

Btw for example the OM system OM-1 camera have quad bayer sensors too but dont advertise 80mp but the realistic 20mp that te sensor actually resolves. They use the subpixel design for improved autofocus.
@@Superbus753 Funny you should mention this. Tony Northrup did a video the other day illustrating your exact point. TBH I did know this was a thing, but had kind of forgotten as it's been a while since it was "new".
@@mdhazeldine ohh haven‘t seen it. My point is its basically a 12mp sensor with some extra for marking (technically they can argue that they aren’t telling a lie)
Your chapter time tags are messed up, 2:34 Battery Life should be on a new line in the description box
As far as the size, people forget the iPhone 11 Pro Max was 6.5 inches. The iPhone 12 went to 6.7 and it was like nobody noticed. At that time, they didn’t shrink the bezels so the phone simply got larger. Now all of a sudden we got this uproar in phone size when most of that was the shrinkage of the bezel🤦🏽♂️.
This is almost a Sony Xperia but Apple
Exactly. Xperia has a two-stage shutter button forever. It can do 4K120 on all three lenses. It also has professional audio recording functions with the Music Pro app.
Yes, all the good stuff from Sony (finally) without the shitty software.
android is a dumpster fire. not worthy to bring out in the field
Exactly
@@gamebuster800u buggin, Sony has the the best pro apps in the game. If Apple so dope why people are using Black magic apps to record most of their shots. The cinema, video and music pro apps on the Sony put that ROTTEN APPLE software to shame. But I will say borrowing technology from companies only make us (the consumers) have better options and pushes the industry further for us!!! So win win.
I was hoping the Pro Max would have 4 cameras, 2 telephotos; a 3x and 5x. I don’t know if that will even happen.
What about the sharpening? Have they removed the stupid sharpening?
Sounds like its the same Sony IMX803 camera found in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro. Lame.
jordan get well soon!
I've been waiting for this all day!
Here are some of the gimmicky features Apple has recently introduced, giving them fancy names and touting them as major upgrades:
- Dynamic Island
- Action Button
- Camera Button
The iPhone 16 series doesn’t feel like a real upgrade. If Apple can’t bring truly innovative features, they should at least focus on making the glass unbreakable and the body scratch-resistant.
I have a feeling the case makers and selfie stick makers are gonna have a hard time designing around that camera button.
I imagine there will be a lot of cases with a simple cut out instead.
Not going to be using the button when it's on a stick..
I think the new camera button needs an API so gimbal and selfie stick manufacturers can replicate the functionality in their own hardware.
case makers, that includes Apple.
The reality is whether it's an actual camera or a smartphone the majority of people just leave it on auto and let the camera do its thing.
Companies should consider releasing new phones every two to three years instead of annually. While software updates can enhance existing devices, hardware advancements, as claimed by Apple, could justify more frequent releases. However, it is important to prioritize genuine eco-friendly practices rather than using them solely as marketing tactics to drive sales. Consumerism often promotes the idea that self-worth is tied to possessions, which can be misleading and harmful to individuals.
what's your bag? I love it!
It’s an S year.
How much faster is the new usbc transfer speed.
I believe it’s the same as the 15Pro (10Gbps). The 16 regular still has 2.0 :/
@@yuanzofficial2.0 😳 isn't that like from the year 2000.
@@MrWiseinheart magic transfer speed like with the Lightning connector. those 42MByte/s transfer speeds are basically useless for photographers who want to check and especially transfer photos from SD card to the phone. with USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) you would at least use the full potential of UHS-II cards (420 MB/s >> UHS-II)
@@MrWiseinheart yeah…you’ll have to opt for the Pro to get the faster speeds. 2.0 is only really good for transferring JPGs from a UHS-i card, and I’m talking one of those $10 ones from Walmart
Very interesting. i have been watching most TH-camrs reviewing the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro with only about 15 minutes or less reviews 😅. Not much to talk about.
Video quality on the new pixel 9 pro is pretty good finally. Probably won’t be better than iPhone 16 pro, but Google finally making good video camera
@@Jesusvanegas94 if you guys want Log video on Samsung it should be said it's already available via a third party option, even ProRes is available now on Android. There is a video comparison showing ProRes log on the S24U against the iPhone 15 Pro's ProRes Log
Software but also hardware. The A series is just faster than anything Android is using
@petouser Don't know about MotionCam Pro?
For me, the biggest negative is that they haven’t updated the video stabilisation. I would have hoped it would read out the full 48mp and then crop to 4K to give you GoPro like IS in 4K. But it seems they still read out a 4K image and then crop that (if you enable max stabilisation). It seems like the hardware should be capable if they have upgraded the readout of the main camera.
Finally upgrading to iPhone 16. Very happy I don't have to size up to the Pro Max for the 5X zoom. Whoever made that decision needs a raise. Thank you for this prompt peek at the new lineup!
I'm so curious if Apple is fully taking advantage of the faster sensor readout in the 16 Pro. That could really help, especially with video
Any update to the Timelapse setting? I’m really
Hoping for 4K hdr finally being an option
The limited use of generative AI puts Apple far, far ahead of Google. It shows that they’re putting thought into the user experience. Which is something that Google hasn’t done since search was initially released.
It's all preference
yeah, it's not like they're super late to the ai game: it's a feature 🙄
Love the 16 pro max comparison to the 14 pro max 😂😂😂
Guys, get real, reviewing is reviewing not just repeting marketing messages with a different twist, take some pictures and do what a real proper analysis of the quality of the image which is at the end what a review should be all about.
The button is a bit like that weird touch sensitive one on the Eos R.
My $100 Alcatel Flash 2 phone from 2015 had a physical shutter button with half-press function. I wish more phones implemented it especially that even midrange phones are touting themselves as photography-centric.
I just feel...Idk. Personally not really excited about it. I mean I've had an apple ecosystem for years, but for the "revolutionary" minor upgrades year after year....I just don't see the point in any of the hype anymore. Maybe I'm absolutely wrong but I just wasn't sold on the keynote.
The keynote itself didn’t seem to have the same energy as say last year. That being said the camera hardware looks to be improved in important ways.
NEVER BUY A PHONE BASED ON THE PROMISE OF FUTURE FEATURES
What about slow mo frame rates? Do we get 1080p 480 fps with the new sensor?
Or does the 1080p240fps has better quality than before?
Yep, definitely sad to see the 3x camera removed. Glad I got the 15 Pro.
I have the 15 Pro Max but will still be pre-ordering the 16 Pro Max tomorrow
:)))))
So no H264 or H265 422 10 bit Log codec within the Apple camera app?😢
Delivery was very hurried, I found. But, it was interesting.
A simple feature that I would LOVE is the ability to LOCK SETTINGS so I don't accidentally switch between Photo, Video, Pano, or whatever mode. Argh.
bottom line is the phone to forget & move to better Huawei XT or Xaiomi U14 or vivo X100U
only feature i want in a phone is removable battery and that's the one they won't give me so ...
Does the 16 pro max have a larger sensor size compared to the 15?
We will have to see but it is likely the same.
@@niccollsvideoseems like it's the same based on the binned pixel size being the same, but it has faster readout times, twice as fast, which could massively influence how useful their image stacking denoiser is when fast motion subjects are in the frame, currently they look demonic.
This is such a great video, but the complaint about screen brightness was an odd one - 2000 nits is fantastic. BUT, it’s nonsense number anyway: that figure is only the peak HDR figure. What’s a much more accurate spec is the SDR figure, and how well it can sustain that figure
What was Jordan recording with?
GH7
Great Video!!
Haven’t followed the keynote. This scene with the two dudes and explosion behind them looks like it was made with AI.
2:55 I thought they said charging speed was up to 45W now.
So can we now change the camera profile after a shot? Because that’s always been an annoying thing about that. You could never back a photo out to standard colors and this was totally separated from normal filters.
Does it have manual white balance?
what do you mean by "the 3X optical lens" is now gone?! This presentation is a complete mess...! I work at Apple on the camera team and I can't understand what you are talking about.
Lot of BS...detail is not 48mpix...watch Tony's review!
I saw a test of the cameras and apparently the dynamic range is worse than even the 14? Or was that a preproduction thing?
to me the photographic styles on the Pro series impressed me the most.
It is also available on non pro
The 16 Pro Max appears to have the same IMX803 camera sensor as the 14 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max.
Question: When is a massive battery upgrade not a battery upgrade? Answer: When Tim Cook talks about a massive battery upgrade but doesn't provide any metrics to measure it against. In fact this was probably the first time in history where he didn't trot out his tired and overused superlative..."This is Apple's biggest (insert whatever feature you like) ever!" Conclusion: nothing to see here!
I don't understand why Apple has such slow charging. Is there a reason?
Trying to figure out what’s the difference between the pro and pro-Max? I went with the 15 Pro Max because of the camera and the larger storage, the screen size was secondary.
I would not can the Main ("Wide") Camera in the Pro "all new". It's the same lens and sensor - the fact that it can transfer data faster does not make it "all new".
Still waiting for more translation features!!
Hmm. Probably not worth it from my 12 pro max. But still interesting to see.
Same. Disappointing really. No 48 sensor on the telephoto and the same front camera.
Having done a side by side video comparison between an iPhone 11 and 15 Pro, I can tell you there is a significant difference. Ignoring whatever the specs say, you can visually see a big quality improvement, especially in the colours. I would guess there'd be a similar difference between the 12 and 16.
I have the same phone. I’m not sure if I want the pro or pro max
Wish you would cover RAW video recording on android , Motioncam pro shoots CinemaDNG.
Isn’t wired charging upped to 45 watts?
Imaging combining apples chip with a proper camera and a lens.....
What? So they basically doubled the magsafe speed but the wired charging is still 20w (or 27w for Pro Max)? That's a shame...
I’m sure it will come with the same optical quality zoom marketing B$ as the 15 Pro did.
should be a good upgrade from my 12 pro max.
Actually not much difference prolly but its new and shiny lol
What I (user of a 13pro) miss most is manual distance setting (like in my old MS Lumia 950, which gets a couple of things right Apple does not, at least until 13pro): focussing on objects that are clearly at inf distance is unfortunately relatively often missed. Any tips how to make sure the camera does what I want?
Why can’t black magic app access the audio features from the new mics?
How about mentioning there's no generative AI like Google has, because they do all the processing on device, not by sending your data to the cloud. For some people that's important and they'd take that trade fro extra features. Don't just say it's not doing all that Google does...
Apple is no longer innovating like it used to, little by little it is falling behind in the technological world, and I say little by little. Other brands have caught up with it and even surpassed it (globally). A quick example is the latest Pixel 9 Pro XL which already comes with all the artificial intelligence of GEMINI (and owned by Google itself) and 16 GB of RAM, and another is the S24 Ultra, etc. This latest iPhone 16 Pro is a disappointment, I really expected more from Apple. Oh, but to charge high prices for little or no innovation, they are the world leaders.
Weren't there Rumors about better lenscoating to reduce lensflares? Any Information about that?
Thanks for the review. Are you traveling with the Wotancraft 10L bag?
Why was 48mp necessary? Because Apple wants to make more money in iCloud storage packages you can conveniently buy. Megapixels are not relevant to quality unless you use ff cameras or extentive zooms.
Nice shirt 👕
You can't show "full frame equivalents" 24mm, 13mm etc while also showing their "native" F-numbers. Obviously the wide lens is not a 13mm F/2.2. You guys should know that
f stop is a ratio between aperture diameter and focal length. it is independent of sensor size. There's no other sensible way to show it.
@@the_wiki9408 Yes I know what the F stop is. There absolutely is a sensible way to show it: The same as it is done for any other camera, except phones.
You don't see an APS-C camera with 35mm F/1.8 lens advertised as having a 52mm F/1.8 lens, do you?
I really don’t like the 5x camera
I even prefered the 2x on my 11pro to the 3x camera on the 15pro. Hope they move away from only 5x option on their next generation
I have a 2x on a 4 year with 90 Hz panel. At that time 400 dollar MSRP phone. No sub pixel nonsense. 🧐
Yawn...
I have a camera. Lots of them, actually. That's a phone, and I use my 13 to make calls on, and take the occasional picture when I need to quickly shoot something that I'm not going to keep. When I want a photograph, I reach for a camera.
Yes, I am an anachronistic old bastard.
..Joe
Good to see Jordan 2.0 up and running.
Sure, there are hardware changes in this phone, but a majority of this stuff is iOS.
just wait until the phones are available then do a video.
Can you take 4k120p in 5x zoom lens? not a digital zoom
