As Mexican, I feel honoured HH took into consideration our culture for one of their episodes and even more for making a funny and respectful song for the Aztecs. #ProudlyMexican.
the three actors performing this song weren't born that long after. Mathew Baynton: 1980 Laurence Rickard: 1975 Jim Howick: 1979 song release: 1977 Laurence was even born before
Can't understand why some people taking offence and talking about white Europeans getting facts wrong in thus song. HH team are not inaccurate here. Admittedly this song is only about Aztec sacrifices, but HH team have done heaps more stuff about the Aztecs including coming of age ceremonies, diet, medicine etc. This jokey approach is taken whenever they portray history, whether it's European history, Chinese, Egyptian etc Its a great, fun way to teach kids.
I'm 15 and i live in the US. I walked into my history class and picked up the notes and saw Aztecs on the top. AUTOMATICALLY i started singing this in my head. then picked up the vocab sheet and saw Pachacuti on it and started singing THAT song. :)
I'm glad the Mexicans on this list find this song as funny as those of us who speak English. You would think after watching this that the reason the Aztec empire was lost to history is that they ran out of people to sacrifice to their gods.
In fact, the song is accurate, we Mexican people celebrate in November 2nd the "day of the Dead". If your travel to Mexico that day, don't be surprise if you see skull decorations everywhere
lenguage certanly exist was the english of their space and time but not the race a tzotzult is not an aztec an lokonobeither and nahau is thename of the lenguage not the race
Not necessarily. That is because they have not found a lot of remains, but to be honest (albeit grim), there are various circumstances in which nothing would remain of the bodies after 400 years. I find it ironic that people talk about 'respecting' a culture in which horrific killing, flaying and dismembering of masses of human beings was commonplace, but go mad about the slave trade. So its OK to cut out someone beating heart, as long as its part of your religion, but woe betide any 'Westerner' who doesn't appreciate some beautiful artwork made of human skulls. Talk about twisted morality.
It´s just great the way Aztec sacrifices were introduced to Brit kiddies. The way we are taught this topic in Mexican schools is so detailed and tactless, and we end up passing judgement over them instead of understanding them. Actually, the idea of killing enemies is not new, Aztecs disguised these murders as sacrifices, nowadays murders are called fighting for democracy and against terrorism. The Spanish version of this song is even better. Great show, great actors.
Honestly, the main thing I learned from Horrible Histories as a kid was that *every* culture has apparently done human sacrifices at some point. The Celts, the Romans, the Aztecs, the Inca… humans just like killing each other, apparently.
It makes me feel queasy, thinking about what it must be like to be marched up a ramp to a priest holding a dagger, feeling yourself lying down on a sacrificial table, and watching the dagger come down... It must have been awful
Apparently some of them were okay with it. They believed that if you got sacrificed it meant that you would get the *best* experience in the afterlife. Obviously it still wasn't great for those who weren't members of the Aztec religion.
@@Cheeseanonioncrispsyeah there are accounts of them being celebrated by their people and asked to talk with the gods about their problems but there also accounts of people less willing who had to be held down so some people bought into it and some didn’t
I love that Larry wasn't meant to act in this show at all! I imagine if you had shown this to him before filming on the first series started he wouldn't have believed it! Nevertheless, we all love Larry :-)
I´m mexican. Aztecs also tear off the whole skin without ripping it apart, like a suit. A priest used to wear it in a very important ceremony called "Xipe Totec". It could have been great to hear about it in the song, more history research besides the well known sacrifices.
xipe totec (our flayed lord) was the name of the god not the ritual. also when the skin started to rot they would throw it on the ground to feed the growing flowers.
For some reason, this song really helps when I'm having a terrible day. I made it the ringtone for when my parents call. ETA: Now that I think about it, I hope the content of the song has nothing to do with that last part because otherwise it sounds really bad.

MsCynthiaX I know this is humor, I do have a sense of humor... the don't mess with my ancestors bit was to emphasize the facts in the song. Día de los Muertos (day of the dead in English) actually came from the Aztecs and I'm glad Horrible Histories did this song. I only wish they did a bit more on the history of Mexico like the conquest, Cinco de Mayo, and the revolution.
@@richarderikssonhjelm8838 Six years on, returning to this video and actually get what you're saying. You're very, very correct for the time tbh. The Aztecs were grim but the conquistadors were no better, practically far worse in the end. @lSSlDrRandom Because Laurence has written more than 200 of the show's sketches and several of the songs. Mat also contributes to the writing and the music.
