    Fish wasn't considered 'meat; because fish apparently 'didn't bleed'..... it was believed that meat comes from meat.... meaning if you ate to much red meat you'd want to have more sex, and sex makes babies which is 'meat'.... and unsactioned sex which was sex on any day that was marked as 'not allowed' which was half the year... was a huge no no... basically the whole thing is a dumb idea that you could curb desires by making people eat less red meat..... medieval times had strange ideas

    I loved the Georgian Come Dine With Me with George III hosting first and holding up a tree branch while asking if anyone wanted a steak from his beef tree. Meanwhile his heir, the future George IV, then says through gritted teeth "If all the fathers in the world he had to be mine". Then when Beau Brummell hosts George III was parking his imaginary kangaroo. When the future George IV hosts he puts on a sumptious 20 course meal with service francaise which means that the food is just put on the table for diners to help themselves.

    • @Liandra24
      @Liandra24 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisrudolf9839 I learned that this tradition of not eating meat on Fridays started in the old days so as to not confuse the meat used by pagans for their rituals, or at least something along those lines. In understanding, pagans in the old days would take meat from anyplace they could get it, and offer it to their gods, essentially from what I understood the animal of where the meat came from would then be considered already offered to their gods. And the laws of the Jewish people forbade them from eating the meat of an animal sacrificed in the name of another god. Something along those lines this tradition ended up with catholics not eating meat on Fridays.

    @MsThemuh Fish being not considered meat was purely down to a loophole in catholic dogma. It was forbiddin to eat any 'Beast of the land' on fridays, but since fish were creatures of the water, that was okay. Incidently, the same logic made it okay to eat beavers on fridays

  • @whatsanenigma

  • @BraindeadPotato
    @BraindeadPotato 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well, medieval people did lots of strange things in order to be able to eat meat when you're actually not allowed to. These Catholic rules are also the reason people invented pasta squares with meat in them - they just wanted to hide the dead animal's flesh from God by wrapping them in pastry ;)

    • @chrisrudolf9839
      @chrisrudolf9839 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No reason to get aggravated at all. People in medieval times were not as stupid as to believe that fish weren't fully living creatures or that their bodies weren't made out of essentially the same stuff as mammals. Those religious rules weren't about not eating animals and not about dieting, either, but about restraining yourself from enjoying rich meals on that day. Fish was mostly considered poor people's food in medieval times, thus it wasn't included under the "no meat" rule. Same reason as why usually anyone living by the sea or by a river was allowed to fish while only noblemen were allowed to hunt most kinds of game.
