Yup! According to Pirate symbology of the time, fearlessness in the face of death was represented by a cup raised in a toast. A heart pierced with a sword or knife symbolized a merciless death. A spear or dart showed a violent death. A heart leaking drops of blood showed a drawn out and torturous death. An empty fist or cutlass in hand meant a swift death.
Apparently, Blackbeard was trying to cram in all the death-related iconography onto one flag.

I recall his death going slightly differently. According to what I read back in high school, when his ship was cornered, he ordered his men to abandon him and stayed to fight on his own, killing half of his attackers by himself before being dragged down.

Aomthing else I learnt about Edward Teach is that in his last battle he gout about 6 musket shots and 5 cutlass wounds before actually falling to the deck dead. He was also quit tall being about 6'6. When Blackbeard's body was decapitated his headless body was then thrown overboard and, according to legend, it swam around the ship 3 times!

His captors? Teach was never captured. He was stabbed from behind by some British sailor while dueling his captain. It was actually quite brilliant. The captain of a British Navy sloop had his men hide below deck and wait for Blackbeard to board. They did and the British surprised them. Just as Blackbeard was about to kill the Naval captain, some unknown sailor stabbed him from behind.

I imagine he carried 12 pistols because they were wildly inaccurate and unlike modern pistols only carried one muzzle loaded shot that needed a primed pan. When you are attacking a ship the last thing you want to do is reload your pistol when others are trying to kill you. Having 12 guns ready is most useful.
